Women in the South played an important role in the survival of the Confederacy during the Civil War. As the military conflicts ensued, the women were forced into a variety of positions that maintained the structure of Southern Life and also lead to changing opinions on the war.

When news of the war first spread throughout the South, women were encouraged, and supported men to join the Confederacy and fight for their Independence. As men began to leave, women not only had to perform the tasks that they were accustomed to, such as caring for children, but they were also forced to perform the daily chores of the men. Women began farming the plantations, working outside the home, and serving as clerks in government locations. This role reversal, though very difficult, gave the women the opportunity to prove their hard work and dedication to the cause, and became the backbone of the Confederacy.

To many it seems the most significant contribution from women to the Civil War was providing healthcare to the wounded soldiers. Due to lack of facilities, many women created hospitals in their own homes. One woman in peticular was Sally Thompkins, who rented a twenty-two bedroom house in Richmond, VA and transformed it into an infirmary for soldiers. She was later commissioned as captain, the only female officer during the war. As the war progressed the South suffered blows in a variety of ways, and the once voracious attitudes of women changed to desperation.

During these trying times women in the south had to re-evaluated their opinions on slavery. Many women disliked slavery because of the extra-marital affairs, others because it was immoral and demeaning. Some women also felt as if they were slaves in their own homes. The change in roles gave women the confidence to voice their opinions to their husbands. However, their feelings on slavery did not affect their patriotism. Out of their patriotism sprung many organizations supporting Southern Ladies. One such organization group, United Daughters of the Confederacy, was established to commemorate the courage and virtue of the South, even though short-lived.

Although the war was one of the most horrible experiences for the woman of the south, it gave them the means to develope their strengths and the conviction to provide a great deal of help for new found independence. Clearly, without the women of the south, the Confederacy would have surrended long before it did.

Social Criticism in Literature

Many authors receive their inspiration for writing their

literature from outside sources. The idea for a story could come from

Custom writing service can write essays on Social Criticism in Literature

family, personal experiences, history, or even their own creativity.

For authors that choose to write a book based on historical events,

the inspiration might come from their particular viewpoint on the

event that they want to dramatize. George Orwell and Charles Dickens

wrote Animal Farm and A Tale of Two Cities, respectively, to express

their disillusionment with society and human nature. Animal Farm,

written in 144, is a book that tells the animal fable of a farm in

which the farm animals revolt against their human masters. It is an

example of social criticism in literature in which Orwell satirized

the events in Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution. He

anthropomorphises the animals, and alludes each one to a counterpart

in Russian history. A Tale of Two Cities also typifies this kind of

literature. Besides the central theme of love, is another prevalent

theme, that of a revolution gone bad. He shows us that, unfortunately,

human nature causes us to be vengeful and, for some of us, overly

ambitious. Both these books are similar in that both describe how,

even with the best of intentions, our ambitions get the best of

us. Both authors also demonstrate that violence and the Machiavellian

attitude of the ends justifying the means are deplorable.

George Orwell wrote Animal Farm, . . . to discredit the Soviet

system by showing its inhumanity and its back-sliding from ideals [he]

valued . . .(Gardner, 106) Orwell noted that there exists in

England almost no literature of disillusionment with the Soviet

Union. Instead, that country is viewed either with ignorant

disapproval or with uncritical admiration.(Gardner, 6) The

basic synopsis is this Old Major, an old boar in Manor Farm, tells

the other animals of his dream of animalism . . . Only get

rid of Man, and the produce of our labour would be our own. Almost

overnight we would become rich and free. (Orwell, 10) The other

animals take this utopian idea to heart, and one day actually do

revolt and drive the humans out. Two pigs emerge as leaders Napoleon

and Snowball. They constantly argued, but one day, due to a difference

over plans to build a windmill, Napoleon exiled Snowball. Almost

immediately, Napoleon established a totalitarian government. Soon, the

pigs began to get special favours, until finally, they were

indistinguishable from humans to the other animals. Immediately the

reader can begin to draw parallels between the books characters and

the government in 117-44 Russia. For example, Old Major, who invented

the idea of animalism, is seen as representing Karl Marx, the

creator of communism. Snowball represents Trotsky, a Russian leader

after the revolution. He was driven out by Napoleon, who represents

Stalin, the most powerful figure in the country. Napoleon then

proceeded to remove the freedoms of the animals, and established a

dictatorship, under the public veil of animalism. Pigs represent the

ruling class because of their stereotype dirty animals with

insatiable appetites. Boxer, the overworked, incredibly strong, dumb

horse represents the common worker in Russia. The two surrounding

farms represent two of the countries on the global stage with Russia

at the time, Germany and England.

Orwell begins his book by criticizing the capitalists and ruling

elite, who are represented in Animal Farm by Mr. Jones, the farmer. He

is shown as a negligent drunk, who constantly starved his animals.

His character is already established as self-indulgent and uncaring.

(King, 8) Orwell shows us how, if only animals became aware of their

strength, we should have no power over them, and that men exploit

animals in much the same way as the rich exploit the proletariat.

(Gardner, 7) What was established in Russia after the Bolshevik

Revolution was not true communism (animalism), which Orwell approved

of, where the people owned all the factories and land. Rather, state

communism was established, where a central government owned them.

Orwell thought that such a political system, state communism, was

open to exploitation by its leaders. Napoleon, after gaining complete

control, did anything he wished - reserved the best for the pigs, and

treated the animals cruelly. The animals could not do anything, unless

they again realized their strength in numbers against their own kind.

Unfortunately, they were too stupid to realize this and accepted the

status quo. It began when the milk and apples were appropriated to

the pigs, and continued to when the pigs could drink and sleep on

beds, until finally the pigs were the human masters to the rest of

the animals. Orwell criticized Germany, representing it as Pinchfield

Farm, which betrayed Animal Farm by paying for lumber with counterfeit

money. In real life, this represents the Soviet-Germany non-aggression

pact during World War II which Germany eventually broke. Eventually,

towards the end of the story, the term, absolute power corrupts

absolutely, is proven, as the pigs, who retained all the privileges

for themselves, have evolved into a different caste from the other

animals. Orwells implication is that real communism cannot exist in

the countries which claim to be communist. The ruling class -

politicians - own everything and ironically are therefore in total

control.

A Tale of Two Cities is a love story which chronicles the lives of

Charles Darnay, a Frenchman who renounced his link with the

aristocracy, and Sydney Carton, a wastrel who lived in England. Both

these characters fall in love with Lucie Manette, the daughter of Dr.

Alexandre Manette, unjustly imprisoned in France for 17 years. Though

Lucie marries Darnay, Carton still loves her and in the end, gives his

life to save Darnay for her. Dickens, who was fascinated with French

history, especially the French Revolution, begins by criticizing the

aristocrats treatment of the poor people of France. In the seventh

chapter of book two, the Monsieur the Marquis had accidentally driven

his carriage over a young child, killing him. Instead of worrying

about the childs welfare, the Monsieurs reaction was to worry about

his horses One or the other of you is for ever in the way. How

do I know what injury you have done to my horses.(Dickens, 111) He

deemed their lives inferior and insignificant, as illustrated when he

threw a gold coin to the childs devastated father as compensation.

The Monsieur the Marquis revealed his true sentiments to his nephew

Repression is the only lasting philosophy. . . fear and slavery, my

friend, will keep the dogs obedient to the whip. . .(Dickens, 1)

Dickens makes it abundantly obvious that the aristocrats are to meet

doom, with symbolic references to fate and death. For instance, as the

Monsieur the Marquis rides through the country, a glowing red

sunset appeared over him, signifying his bloody death. In the words of

the author, . . . the sun and the Marquis going down together. .

.(Dickens, 114) Madame Defarges knitting is also a symbol of

impending doom, as she records the names of all those who are to die

when the revolution takes place.

Dickens also expresses his disillusionment with some of the

outcomes of the French Revolution. He believed that the people did

not just liberate themselves, but also took vengeance towards the

aristocracy. This is confirmed in the conversation between the

revolutionaries Well, well, but one must stop somewhere. After all,

the question is still where? At extermination, said

madame.(Dickens, 41) Madame Defarge embodies this attitude, as she

wants to have Charles Darnay killed, not because he has done something

wrong, but because he is related to the Evr‚monde family, which killed

her relative. Though Dickens seems almost to regard violence as the

one way to bring about social change,(Lucas,88) he then began to

denounce the actions taken by some of the revolutionaries. The

citizens let their righteous cause turn into vengefulness. Even

servants and maids to the aristocrats were beheaded, although they had

not really done anything wrong.

Animal Farm and A Tale of Two Cities were written to express their

authors disenchantment with the state of evolution of human nature.

They seem to be saying, that even when we begin with honourable

intentions, there will be some of us who will let their base instincts

take control. Orwell, in Animal Farm portrays this nature by parodying

events in real history. Given the right conditions, those events could

happen anywhere - a leader becoming overly ambitious, to the point of

harming his people for morepower. In A Tale of Two Cities, Dickens

examines the inner soul, and shares with us how people are driven to

the valley of human emotions, where desperation and anger reign, and

what could happen afterwards if we let these emotions build up inside.

Every human being is capable of becoming a ruthless, opportunistic

being like Napoleon or Madame Defarge, if placed in the right place,

at the right time.

Inequality is a natural consequence of the free market functioning effectively though the government both directly and indirectly influences the extent of inequality through its policies it puts together such as through macroeconomic policies, low income earner benefit policies and microeconomic reforms.

Fiscal and income policies generally have the most direct impact on inequality through changing the levels of welfare benefits, tax, government charges and wages and salaries. The recent push to achieve fiscal balance has meant the reduction of these expenditures on welfare and government benefits and services such as labour market programs, which adversely affects lower income earners.

Despite the government using monetary policy to slow the rate of economic growth, it can distort the distribution of income and wealth. This is done by the rising of interest rates resulting in a transfer of wealth from low to high-income earners due to the fact that most low-income earners are borrowers and faced massive interest rates.

This has also resulted in high levels of unemployment , which is a significant factor in creating a widening gap between high and low income earners. Unemployed people must rely on government benefits, which are significantly below the average incomes earned by people in employment. This also leaves the problem of long term unemployment which has created a core of people who may permanently rely on government benefits for their income and who become entrenched in poverty further increasing inequality.

Custom Essays on How do government policies influence the level of inequality in the distribution of income and wealth?

The government has created policies in an attempt to equal distribution of income through Welfare policies as well as a progressive taxation system, which increases the proportion of income paid in tax as the level of income rises. Also the Goods and Services Tax, is regressive, and basic necessities such as some health, education and childcare services and basic food are exempt, in order to assist low income earners. Rebates are also given to lower income earners with the government reducing the cost of government and private sector services reduced for low income earners such as through Medicare, pharmaceutical benefits, reduced transport fares and subsidised housing

The government’s direct and indirect policies influence strongly the inequality within Australia, as well as their encouragement to globalise the economy and integrate the global business cycle with the domestic. This though makes Australia susceptible to downturns in other economies, which would have serious implications for economic growth, employment and distribution. Despite long-run benefits of globalisation the short-term consequences involve structural change, which have the most negative impacts on low-income earners.

War is a terrible thing, regardless of the cause people die. In every war there are young

soldiers who fight without knowing why and are merely concerned with their survival. In Stephen

Crane’s novel The Red Badge of Courage, the main character is a young soldier named Henry

Fleming who is full of mixed feelings. Although the novel spans nomore than a few weeks, Henry

Custom writing service can write essays on A Literary Analysis of henry Flemming from the Red Badge of Courage

undergoes a considerable amount of psychological development from his cliched views of war, to

his selfish acts throughout battle, and his final passage into maturity.

In the beginning of the novel, Henry has a very simple and romantic view that war is the

crucible that all heroes must go through. As he moves from one station to the next, Henry thought

he “must be a hero” since he is “basking in the smiles of...girls and was patted and complimented

by the old men...”(6). In order to feel secure with himself as a man, Henry occupies his thoughts

with the praise of women and being the envy of men. As a soldier he feels that he is distinguished

from other men and is now a real man in the eyes of his peers. Henry assumes the battle will be

that of the heroic Greeklike struggles that he has read about, and he will return from battle “with

his shield or on it”(4). Like the adolescent that he is Henry is not aware of what he has gotten

himself into, and is willing to sacrifice his life for glory. He misinterprets the war as an

opportunity of earning himself a reputation instead of fighting bravely for a cause. His simple

romantic views of war seem to edge him closer to thinking only of himself, than to bringing him

closer to becoming a true hero. Henry’s mother cares little of whether he comes back as a hero

her main concern is whether or not he is responsible and honest during battle. Henry thinks he is a

grown man but he still conveys childhood needs as he seeks his mother’s approval. Like a

disobedient child , Henry lacks the maturity to accept his mother’s advice and allows it to

discourage him. Henry allows himself to be influenced by the glory of war even before stepping

on to the battlefield, he has become a fake hero without even being aware of it.

Instead of fighting bravely like he intended, Henry selfishly becomes interested in his own

well-being. During the second battle, he runs for his life like a “proverbial chicken”(40). Henry

becomes somewhat of a hypocrite as well as a joke as he puts his desire for self preservation

before the well-being of his fellow soldiers. Henry wanted to become a hero and when he is finally

tested he runs away from his chance. Henry feels as if “nature had given him a sign” as he threw

a pine cone at the squirrel and saw him flee from danger (45). Henry gives himself an excuse for

his selfish behavior and keeps trying to convince himself that is was nature’s law to run from

danger and preserve oneself. He justifies his impulse to retreat with the excuse that if is for the

good of the army and that the world requires his survival. Henry subconsciously feels guilty for

his actions so the only way to accept what he has done is to cover up the fact that he is not a hero

at all. Henry abandons the tattered soldier before the truth of his wound can be discovered. He is

only concerned with being labeled as a deserter, so he avoided the tattered soldier when he should

have aided him in caring for his wounds. Henry becomes full of guilt as he realizes his selfishness

and the consequences as he tries to run away from his problems once more. Henry’s lack of

experience reveals the harsh reality that he has a lot to go through to become the hero that he

yearns to be.

Henry soon realizes that to become a man he must rely on courage instead of his previous

boyish beliefs of what war was. After his encounter with the squirrel, Henry discovers the corpse

of a soldier. With this one encounter henry realizes that he is only one of a whole battlefield of

soldiers and he begins to question the qualities of courage and honor. Staring death in the eye he

realizes that nature goes on regardless of whether men live and die with courage or without.

Henry soon returns to battle and inspires the regiment by picking up the flag and leading the

charge. He feels that he has betrayed his comrades so in an attempt to make up for his desertion

he charges into battle fearlessly and without concern for his own well-being. Henry’s peaceful

disposition becomes apparent as he becomes quieter and more reserved, he now feels secure and

has a sense of courage. As henry marches after his victory he felt “He had been to touch the great

death, and found that, after all, it was but the great death. He was a man” (10). Henry reflects

on his actions quietly, he is ashamed of his selfishness yet realizes that he will learn from his

experiences. He once assumed that death would stop the drama of war, but has grown to realize

that death was a necessary part of nature and regardless of courage or honor all human life meets

the same end. It is at his final march that Henry realizes that he has began his way onto the road

towards manhood.

Henry is now on the path towards manhood as he went from false views of the glory of

war, to becoming only concerned with his own well-being, and to his final steps toward maturity.

Henry Fleming, despite his cowardly acts, did eventually see the true reason to fight. After his

experience, he can now understand what his mother was trying to tell him, that it isn’t necessary

to be a hero in order to be a man, you only have to do what is right. Henry has yet to mature fully

but because of his experiences in the war, he is a few steps closer.

Sylvia Plath’s, Mirror

This poem is about a mirror with an unemotional character that is human like. The mirror shows its character as it announces in the first line of the poem, “I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions” (1). The mirror shows that whatever it sees it reflects without prejuidious. In the second line the mirror states, “I am not cruel, only truthful”. (4) The personality of the mirror is unbiased and the reflections are clear and truthful even when the truth is unwanted. The mirror is not affected or its judgment is never clouded, it simply reflects only what is sees and whomever looks into this mirror is faced with harsh are pleasant realities.

During the second portion of the poem the mirror changes identity and it is now a lake with a women looking into it at her reflection. It states, “Now I am a lake” (10) A mirror and lake are the same in many ways but they are also different in many ways. A mirror is stable and is usually placed on a wall and the reflections are exactly what you see. In a lake you can also see reflections but they are not always exact. Sometimes the reflections are elongated and waverly and can be penetrated by touching the water.

The woman who is looking into the lake is searching for her true identity. Because the woman does not like what she sees she turns to candlelight or moonlight. She turns to these things because she doesn’t want to face the truth. Candlelight and moonlight hide scares and blemishes, this woman wants to hide her imperfections. The ending of the poem shows the real reason why she goes to the lake and every once in a while she allows the moon and candlelight to lie to her. The woman in the mirror is afraid of growing old or her appearance changing but her growing old cannot be stopped as the poem states it, “Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish” (18).

narrative

It’s July 1. I’m 1 years old. We are watching television in the living room. I hear a bird chirping outside the window of the living room. I pull the curtain wide open to see where the chirp was coming from. I saw a baby bird limping on the sidewalk, it must have fell out of the tree, I thought to myself. My instincts told me to go outside and bring the bird inside before a cat gets to it and eats it up. I turn to my brother, who is just sitting in the dining room next to me, and yelled out to him, “There’s a bird outside limping, lets bring it in the house until it gets better and then we’ll let it go.”

My brother and I dash to the door to get the bird. As we both got to the porch and ran down three painted red steps, the bird began to hop towards a bush on the side of the house. Every time we got closer to the bird the louder the bird began to chirp. As the bird reached the bush it was a lot harder to grab it because of all the thorns sticking out of bush. When I finally got hold of the bird and began reaching for it. A loud bang sound had gone of within the neighborhood. It sounded much like a firework that had gone off. I startled from the sound and dropped the bird out of my hand. My brother looked frightened, said to me that the sound of that bang, sounded like gunfire. I told him that it was just some firework down the street since it is almost Fourth of July. So we went back to trying to grab the bird and thought nothing of it. Bang, bang, bang! I startled again and this time I looked up to see what the noise really is. It turned out to be a sound of a gunfire that was coming from the bottom of the street from a brown, dirty, graffiti apartment. I see a man in black jeans and a gray T-shirt running up the hill with a gun in his hand. He is pointing the gun up towards the hill at a woman who is running in and out of the street screaming for help. I took a double look and I see the woman running towards my brother and I. The gun is going off directly at the woman. Dazed, shocked, and astonished I froze. I stood standing there by bush not moving or even thinking to run for safety. I am looking at them and I realize I needed to run into the house. It was the sound of the man’s voice, which made me move. He had a deep tone of voice and he is yelling with anger. “Come back here you bitch! (Bang, bang.) When I get you, you are going to die (bang.).” The woman screaming for help. My brother and I run towards the house and even before I reached the red porch to get inside the house I tripped over my slippers and almost fell. I didn’t look back I kept running, trying to get into the house. Soon as I got to the door I grabbed the door and almost shut my brother outside. My brother screamed, “Wait for me, don’t shut that door on me, you dumbass! Are you trying to leave me out here to get shot at?”

As we got into the house I screamed at the top of my lungs for my grandmother. I told her not to go outside or even look out the window because there is a man with the gun shooting at some woman. My grandmother being stubborn that she is peeps out the window anyways, after I had told her not to look out the window. So scared, I ran all over the house shutting every window and locking it. I even put the television on mute. Hours later several police cars was outside. They blocked the whole street and they went around asking the neighbors if they had heard or seen anything. The doorbell rings, I peep through the keyhole an I see and officer at the door. I ignore to open the door. Peeping out the living room window, I could here a conversation from the officers saying that they will stay on the block until a lot of evidence is gathered. I see one officer across the street bending down with his flashlight picking up something and placing it into a plastic bag. I assume it would be the bullet shells. The hard part was finding all of the bullet shells because across the street is my friends house. It’s a big white house white house with a big lawn. The grass was dead and there were so many dead weeds that grew as tall as your kneecaps. It was impossible to search for bullet shells there.

Order College Papers on narrative

A few days later my neighbor from across the street comes over to my house to play. We both sat on the front porch. He showed me what he had found on his front yard and it turned out to be a bullet shell. My friend had no idea how it gotten there. I spoke very softly to him telling him about the bullet shell an how it got there. I took the bullet shell away from him and tossed it into the street. As I am telling him the story, I glanced my eyes to a brown, dirty, graffiti apartment down the hill from my house. The only apartment on the block. As I told my friend the story I continue to look and glare at the apartment just in case I see him come out. So I can prepare myself to get inside the house.

Many weeks passed, I’m in the living room watching television and on every commercial break I would look out the window. As I was looking out the window I see the same man that shot at the woman driving a brown, dinted up Cadillac. He was driving the car so fast down the hill and before I could blink, the car rammed into the brown, dirty, graffiti apartment. The man jumps out of his car to escape and the women in the apartment runs out screaming and chasing the man. Minutes later, two cop cars come flying to the apartment in each direction, but by the time they got there those people had already left the sight. I swing the curtain to shut and I slightly peep out the window. This time around I didn’t tell my grandmother about what I had seen.

Everyday after that crash into the apartment, police cars patrol the block every hour. I was too scared to even want to live here anymore because every other day something bad happens.

Finally, one late night I hear sirens in front of the house and a bright beam. I looked out the window and I see so many cops outside. I’m frightened. Then I hear police voices on the side of the house near my bedroom. I run to my room to see if I had locked my window. I could hear sounds of the footsteps thumping towards the backyard of the house. I run to check the back door to see if it was locked. Through the back window I see the same man and in the sky a helicopter shining bright light at him. I see him trying to hop over the fence and he trips on a broken concrete in backyard. From a distance, I hear two officers running on the side of the house. Before the man could even get up the two officers pins the man down to the ground and began reading him his rights. That same night I couldn’t sleep, all I could think of was what had happened throughout the past few weeks. The only thing I could remember was a flashback of what had just happened. I was amazed that he was finally caught.

Through strict analysis, the basis for future decision making can be established.

1.. Methods of Research

Methods of research have included first hand observations of the current operating processes at Woolworth’s Victoria Point. In addition, an interview with the Store Services Manager, Petina Fuller, has been undertaken. A variety of current manuals and marketing statistics have been used to ascertain an understanding of the businesses organisation. Various reference materials including textbooks and dictionaries have also been consulted to gain further understandings of key business concepts.

.0. Introduction

This report has been compiled to provide an overview of the firm’s current operating processes. In association with this, the areas focused upon include the businesses background, organisation, hierarchy, operating manuals and changes which have previously occurred in the business. Also, key factors affected by the businesses environmentally sustainable work practises are evaluated. Therefore, profitability can be improved in both the short and/or long term.

.0. BUSINESS BACKGROUND

.1. COMPANY HISTORY

Woolworths Limited was founded by Mr Percy Christmas in 14. His idea was to launch a retail operation based on low prices, featuring open display counters (as oppose to the traditional across the counter service). In 158, the Company purchased its first food outlets. The 160s then saw a period of rapid expansion into food with the first supermarket opening in 160 at Warrawong in NSW. Since that year, Woolworths has opened supermarkets across every state in Australia.

.. LOCATION OF INDUSTRY

Today, Woolworths Limited consists of over 1000 stores which are divided into several divisions (See Appendix B). Within the Bayside region, Woolworths provides a monopoly of stores in nearly every suburb. The store being analysed in this report is located at Victoria Point on Bunker Road. Established on September 001 and running for 18 months, the business is still in its early stages of development. The Company is also one of the leading competitors against three major adversaries within retail, including Coles, Bilo and Action.

.. TYPE OF INDUSTRY

As one of the largest retail operation company within Australia, it is dedicated to providing customers with quality, range, value and everyday low prices. Woolworths is built on passion for retail, attention to detail, hard work, ensuring the safety of customers and staff as well as having fun at the same time. The key area focused upon within the company, is to continuously refresh and improve both the business operations and staff attitudes and motives.

.4. EMPLOYEES

Supermarkets are the largest operating divisions in Woolworths. Today, over 100 000 people are employed across 700 stores operating within Australia.

Woolworths at Victoria Point, currently hold 177 employees throughout the eight departments available. These departments consist of Perishables, Deli, Meat, Bakery, Produce, Frontend, Non Trade and Longlife which is divided into Grocery and Variety. The most demanding department would be the Frontend. There are also a number of multi-skilled staff who having been previously trained, work between the departments listed. Of these employees, 5 are permanent and require up to 8 hours of work, 1 are part-time with a maximum of 6 hours and a minimum of 1 hours and the final are casual, rostered on a day to day basis with a maximum of 8 hours permitted per week. The companies plan to increase the number of employees working is ongoing, depending mainly on staff turnover and business trend. Woolworths is also one of the largest apprenticeship employers in Australia, making available vast opportunities within the retail sector.

4.0. BUSINESS ORGANISATION

Woolworths is a public incorporated organisation officially listed under Woolworths Limited. As a business with limited liability, “Any five or more people may apply for incorporation as a public company and then invite the public to invest in shares,”(Kirkwood, 1 68). An evident feature of the public company is that management and control are left in the hands of an elected board of directors, while the ownership lies with the shareholders. Currently, Woolworths provides more than 80 000 shareholders with the greatest possible return on their investment. Therefore, if the company should fail, shareholders are only liable to the extent of their share holdings incurred.

5.0. BUSINESS STRUCTURE

“Most medium to large organisations operate within three main levels of management top, middle and supervisory,”(Beck, 00 14). This is seen evident in the flat or rather more functional structure displayed through the Woolworths’ organisation. (See Appendix C). The hierarchy of the company begins with the Store Manager at the highest level, followed by the Duty Manager, Store Trading Manager and Store Services Manager. Branches further followed lead to the supervisory level of the store. These levels are usually structured in such ways to suit the companies operations based on a broad and varying range of reasons.

6.0. MANUALS

6.1. OVERVIEW

Handbooks and manuals are distributed to employees as guides to company policies and procedures. They are designed to help and train staff to understand the basics of the business. Manuals are also used as a reference guide to company procedures. Stored in the appropriate office or area, they are readily accessible to staff who need to use them.

6.. TYPES

Throughout Woolworths, hundreds of manuals are in use for numerous reasons. Located in all departments and office rooms around the store, they provide a basis upon which reference can be made if uncertainty upon a subject should arise. Manuals are categorised into three main areas. The first area includes the Training manuals, one of the largest and mostly frequently used. The second area incorporates the Store Managers Manual. The Store Managers Manual which consists of only one handbook, is a compacted version of every other manual available at the store. It is the seen most ideal for reference by all because of this reason. The third category consists of all else excluding the Training and Store Managers manual. Examples of these include The Rehabilitation manual, Public Liability manual and Supermarkets National (& State) Policies manual.

7.0. AREAS OF CHANGE

7.1. NEW TECHNOLOGY

Technology is critical to the efficiency of Woolworths’ businesses. As store numbers and customer base expand, systems must be enhanced to provide higher levels of performance and reliability. Currently operating systems enabling stores to run efficiently include the In Store System (ISS), Stock Status System, Deals and Promotions eg four cents off per liter at Woolworths Petrol over a thirty dollar purchase, Corporate Application Support System (ASS), Store Data Communications (SDC), Merchandise Planning and Control (MPC), Distribution Systems and Store Order Management (SOM).

Upgrades are introduced frequently within Woolworths’ areas of technology. An example would include the Fresh Food Stocktake System as well as the most recent upgrade, The Automatic Teare Weight. These upgrades affect the businesses operations as new positions are being created to accommodate training. Also, it creates a more effective and efficient way of business operations and organisation.

7.. CHANGING ROLE OF EMPLOYEES

The introduction of new technology not so much changes the roles of employees, but rather creates valuable positions for training purposes. In Addition to retraining in new areas, changes will also occur in the way record-keeping is performed and the protection of data is stored. For example, when the new Fresh Food Stocktake System was implemented in the business, a new position was temporarily created for training. This resulted in minor changes to the way record keeping was also performed.

7.. METHODS OF RECORD KEEPING

7..1. DATA PROTECTION

Information is a valuable asset to any organisation. Organisations store and process ever-increasing amounts of vital information on computer systems. Although the majority of data protection is computer based, manual paperwork still has its functions. This computerized information, together with the hardware, software and personnel needed to manage it, represents an immense investment, which demands the best possible safeguards and protection. The protection of data is therefore, extremely beneficial and compulsory in areas regarding record-keeping, security devices, passwords, money, important records and the privacy of information.

7... METHODS OF PROTECTION

Changes within Woolworths Victoria Point ensure continued improvements to the company. These improvements are made possible due to the increasing amount of reports concerning personnel records, sales information and customer and staff information. As the company abides by the current Privacy Legislation, changes in the business operations have and need to continue occuring. An example would include of the way Woolworths handled refunds and Ezy Banking due to the Privacy Act enforced. Such changes resulted in customer information being confidential to both the prying public and business itself.

8.0. ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE WORK PRACTISES

8.1. TYPES

Belonging to an environmentally conscious world with good public relations, two types of environmentally sustainable work practises are implemented throughout the business. These include rubbish or wastage removal and recycling. The State Branch Services organises each store’s wastage/rubbish removal of garbage and fat and bone. Appropriate steps are then followed to ensure that persons/companies collecting waste for disposal, do so in an environmentally safe and responsible manner.

“Woolworths believes that recycling is one of the alternatives that best achieve waste minimization,”(www.woolworths.com.au). The business also aims to encourage and assist recycling collection interventions for all waste created as a result of the facilities and service provided to customers. These include products such as waste paper, cardboard, computer paper, chicken fat from rotisseries, plastic “shrink” wrap and polystyrene produce boxes. Therefore, the impact of such implementations can only be seen as advantageous.

.0. CONCLUSION

This report was compiled to provide an overview of the companies business environment and current operating processes. Providing this, a focus on the area of the businesses background, organisation, hierarchy, operating manuals and changes which have occurred in the business was investigated. Also, key factors affected by the businesses Environmentally Sustainable Work Practises and effects were recognised. This provided a basis upon which current operations were strictly anaylsed so changes could be implemented, if need be, to improve profitability both in the short and/or long term.

10.0. RECOMMENDATIONS

Due to the current operating processes at Woolworths in Victoria Point, the following considerations have been put forward, for consideration to improve profitability.

 To continuously refresh and improve both the business operations and staff attitudes as well as motives.

 To remain the leading competitor within the market place for profitability purposes

 To continue the introduction of new technology within the business for more effective and efficient organisation.

 To maintain and implement further promotions such as the four cents off a litre at Woolworths Plus Petrol when a purchase is made over thirty dollars, at the store as a marketing strategy for a higher rate of attraction.

Jimmy Carter was born and grew up in the tiny, southwest Georgia town of Plains. Jimmy Carter’s roots in Georgia were strong and deep. His family had originated in Virginia with the arrival in 167 of Thomas Carter. Like other colonists, the Carter family spread out, some settling in eastern North Carolina, and others going farther south. Two hundred years ago, Jimmy Carter’s ancestor Kindred Carter arrived in Georgia. There he stayed, having found what he had been looking for-good, rich soil and lush forests that could be easily cleared, planted, and tilled. When Kindred Carter died in 1800, he left his family three hundred acres suitable for growing cotton and wheat and for raising horses, cattle, mules, and pigs.

Farming was the work of the Carter family for generations. As the Carter sons grew to manhood, they branched into other Georgia counties where they bought more land and raised families of their own. Although the civil war temporarily interrupted their prosperity, in time they rebuilt their holdings. The Carters, after all, were known to be very hard workers.

Life for Lillian and Earl Carter, Jimmy Carter’s parents, was worlds apart from the way most families live today. Like most southerners then, they had no electricity and no plumbing. On frigid winter nights, Jimmy would fall asleep snuggled against warm bricks that had been heated on the stove, wrapped, and carried to his bed.

“We weren’t rich, but we weren’t poor,” Jimmy’s mother Lillian said, “We lived very, very well in terms of having what we wanted.” (Smith, P14)

In 1, the year his second sister, Ruth, was born, Jimmy became a pint-sized, five-year-old entrepreneur. Every morning he would get up at dawn. Jimmy Carter would be barefoot and shirtless, and would pull his little wagon out to the peanut fields, tug at the peanuts till they were on the ground, shake the dirt off their veins, then pile them into his wagon. Back home, he would then pull the nuts from the vines, wash them, and soak them overnight.

The next morning he would build a fire in the backyard and boil his peanuts in a black pot over the fire. When that was done, he would carefully measure out half a pound of peanuts to put in each of twenty bags. After breakfast he would gather up the bags and set out on foot for Plains. At Plains, Jimmy Carter would sell each bag for five cents. He would usually earn a dollar a day.

Years later, after high school, Jimmy wanted to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. He was unable to get an appointment and had to wait until one year later. Meaning, he would have to go to another college first. To Jimmy the delay seemed interminable. By then the United States had entered into World War II and he longed to be among the elite corps of future naval officers training at Annapolis to fight in it.

When Jimmy Carter finally made it to Annapolis he spent his first year completely miserable and homesick. Others called him “Plebe”. Plebes were considered to be the lowest form of human life, they were subjected to a nonstop barrage of hazing, humiliation, and insults from upperclassman. Because of his southwest Georgia accent, he was constantly teased about being a hillbilly or a hick from the sticks or a hayseed. Despite everything, he was determind to make it through.

As years went on he continued his education and married a lady named Rosalynn. He met Rosalynn through his sister. Rosalynn was there years younger than Jimmy, and he would oftentimes see her at his house with his sister. Jimmy Carter always dismissed her as “an insignificant little girl.” It wasn’t until he came home for a visit and saw her, and realized how things changed.

Right after the wedding Jimmy was assigned to the United States Navy. The year 146 was a difficult time to begin a career as a young officer in the United States Navy. World War II had just ended and the country was enjoying peace at last. The postwar navy was in poor shape, having less than half its wartime manpower. Additionally, more than two thousand ships had been and another seven thousand declared surplus.

As years went on, he continued his survice in the Navy, and also he and Rosalyn had three boys. When he returned home from his survice in the Navy, he put forth all the money he and Rosalyn saved towards buying farm equiptment. Jimmy Carter looked forward to farming with his family, and enjoying life with them and perhaps going back to the Navy on occasions. Jimmy Carter had no idea what was in store for him.

In the first year, there was a huge drought in Plains and business was not good at all. The income made for Jimmy Carter was below $00.00 that year. They were forced to move into a government housing project for which they qualified because of their low income. Rosalyn kept to herself, she was very unhappy, and wanted more for the family.

Within a year tons of peanuts came pouring into Jimmy’s warehouse to be weighed, evaluated, and stored or shipped out of town and turned into a variety of peanut products. With more income, the family rented a big house outside of Plains.

Like his father, Jimmy Carter also contributed his time to a long list of civic organizations. He became director of the county chamber of commerce, a member of the library board, the hospital authority, and the county school board. As project chairman of the Lions Club, he helped organize everyone in Plains to get together to improve the town. First the streets were paved, then people painted their houses, finally enough money was raised at bake sales and town picnics to build a community swimming pool.

It was not long at all before Jimmy’s civic responsibilites had expanded beyond Plains and Sumter County. Each new job made him a little better known as a valued volunteer leader. He helped organize a seven-county planning commission; he became president of the Georgia Crop Association; he was selected state chairman for the March of Dimes. He also rose to the very top position in the Lions Club, becoming chairman of the state’s district governors.

At this time segregation and racism began to be a big issue in America. Whites did not want to have to go to the same schools with blacks, and they didn’t feel that they should be equal. On the other hand, Jimmy disagreed and was the only white man in Plaines that did not join the White Citizens Council. On the morning of his thirty-eight birthday, Jimmy Carter arose from his sleep and told his wife that he had decided to run for the Georgia State Senate.

Jimmy Carters entry into the world of politics was a eye-opener. With only two weeks before the primary, Jiimmy, Rosalyn, Jimmys sister Ruth, and several close friends mounted what the candidate later affectionately called “an amateurish, whirlwind campaign.” (Smith, 46) While Rosalyn tended the wharehouse, Jimmy took the road, visiting every village in every county, shaking thousands of hands, working much harder than his opponent. Rosalynn and others spent their spare time phoning and writing to hundreds of names on the voting lists.

Leaving nothing to chance, Jimmy Carter spent primary day going from one county polling place to the next to greet voters. When he got to Quitman County, he could hardly believe what he saw. Instead of the usual polling booths, all the voters were marketing their ballots in public while the county boss, Joe Hurst, looked on. Jimmy strongly protested, but no one paid any attention to him. Clearly this was the way Joe Hurst had always run elections in this county and he wanted to continue to run them this way.

That night, after the vote had come in from every county except Quitman, Jimmy was leading. Then the Quitman vote came in. Although only 0 people had been recorded as having voted, 40 votes were tabulated-enough to carry Jimmy’s opponent to victory. Jimmy instantly challanged the results.

In the six weeks remaining before the general election there were court hearings, appeals, and counterappeals. At first no one could find the Quitman county ballot box. Finally it was discovered under the bed of Joe Hurst’s daughter. But when it was opened in court and neither the voting list nor any of the ballots were in it, a neutral judge declared Jimmy the winner of the primary. But then the local Democratic Executive Committee, controled by Joe Hurst, stepped in and overturned the judge’s decision.

The election mess in southwest Georgia by then had attracted statewide attention. One of Atlanta’s most prominent lawyers, Charles Kirbo, persuaded Georgia’s secretary of state to issue a last minute order that Jimmy’s name be substituted for his opponents on the election ballots. Eventually Jimmy had won the seat for state senator by 851 votes.

As soon as Jimmy left for the legislative session in Atlanta in early 16, Rosalynn got a message from Joe Hurst that said that the last time he had been crossed, the person’s liquor store had been burned down. Legislative sessions lasted about two and a half months each year in Atlanta. All the time Jimmy was away that first year, Rosalyn lived in terror. Rosalyn was afraid that their wharehouses and home would be burnt down. Afraid to leave the boys in the house alone, she would have them meet her at the warehouse after school. When they all got home, she would check under every bed just to make sure that no one was hiding. When it was time for bed she left the porch and hall lights on and had baracaded the doors with chairs. Fortunately, nothing ever happened.

He served a few years, and when it came time to be re-elected he lost, by a lot. Jimmy Carter became depressed and ended up in debt and lost twenty pounds within a short time. After research he realized that Georgians voted for the other two candidates just to knock each of them out.

In late 16, after it had become clear that Carl Sanders was his strongest competitor, Jimmy commissioned a poll to determine his standings. The poll indicated that both Sanders and Carter were seen as liberals. It also indicated; however, that voters knew Sanders better and were familiar with his political views. This was seen as an asset for Jimmy because, by emphasizing his moderate conservatism in relation to that of Sanders, he could play to the majority voters’ bent towards conservatism.

Jimmy formally announced his second candidacy for governor on April , 170. His platform was a model of political blandness, including promises to “serve all Georgians, not just a powerful few,” “to make appointments on the basis of qualifications for the job and never for political expediency” and “to strengthen local government and return the control of all aspects of government to the people.” (Smith, 55)

Jimmy’s new image had its rewards. Georgia’s most conservative political leaders began falling in behind him, figuring that he was more to their liking than the liberal Carl Sanders. The primary ended in a runoff between Sanders and Carter. Jimmy won the roundoff and then went on to beat his Republican opponent, Hal Suit, in the general election. On November , 170 Jimmy Carter became the governor-elect of Georgia.

When Jimmy Carter became the sixty-seventh governor of Georgia in January 17, he gave an inagural speech that was only nine minutes long. His speech surprised just about everyone. As he spoke, the faces of the die-hard segregationists who had supported his candidacy turned from puzzelment to outright dismay. “I realize that the test of a man is not how well he campaigned,” Jimmy began, “At the end of a long campaign, I believe I know our people as well as anyone. Based on this knowledge of Georgians-north and south, rural and urban, liberal and conservative-I say to you quite frankly that the time for racial discrimination is over.” (Smith, 57)

The day after he was inaugurated, his speech was front page news in the New York Times. A few weeks later his face beamed from the cover of Time magazine. Suddenly he had become one of the South’s hopeful new voices, a symbol for an entire region that was changing.

Jimmy was a hardworking, effective, and innovative governor. The primary and immense task that he set for himself was reorganizing the state government, something that had not been done since the 10’s. He assembled a team of a hundred people from Georgia’s largest businessses to study the maze of state agencies, bureaus, and commissions and to recommend ways to make the government work more efficiently and economically.

By 17, only two years after becoming governor, it was clear that the place Jimmy wanted to go to next was the White House. At first it was thought that the best time for Jimmy to announce his 176 presidential candidacy would be in mid-175. But in August 174 President Nixon resigned presidency under-pressure and Jerry Ford became president. The day after Nixon’s resignation, Jimmy telephoned Morris Dees, a millionaire who had been a remarkable success raising funds for George McGovern’s 17 presidential campaign. When Jimmy asked Dees to raise funds for him, Dees agreed.

Finally on December 1, 174 Jimmy stood before more than ,000 well-wishers, including Apollo 11 astronaut Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin. Live television carried Carter’s words to his fellow Georgians

“As of this time here, in the stae that I love, surrounded by friends of mine from all over the nation-in face even from the moon-I want to announce that I am a candidate for the Presidency of the United States.” (Schram,6)

For all his memos, for all his planning, for all his maneuvering, Jimmy Carter still had two basic problems when he set out in 175 on his presidential campaign. Not many people knew who he was. Not many people even cared. Philadelphia, Carter scheduled a press conference in s downtown hotel and nobody showed up excpet the candidate and his press secretary, Jody Powell.

In each state, Carter and his aides set about to try and establish some sort of orgnanization, building as often as possible on contacts Carter had made in the past-including some from his work as the party’s 174 campaign chairman. Carter stuck to a schedule that eventually took him to forty-six states and the District of Columbia in 175. But that is not to say things steadily improved for the Georgian as he set about the business of getting nationally known.

“By Midsummer,” Carter’s press secretary and traveling aide Jody Powell recalls, “in every state we’d go into, some of Jimmy’s supporters would pull me aside and say ‘When are you going to get him on “Meet the Press” or “Face the Nation”?’ (Schram, 6)

In 175 Carter was doing more than just worrying about local press coverage. One glaring weakness in the presidential candidacy of the ex-Georgia governor was that he had no experience in foreign affairs-certainly nothing that could be compared favorably with the many men of Washington who had their eye on the White House. That was one reason why he seized on an opportunity in May to go to Japan as a member of a trilateral commission composed of North American, European, and Japanese representatives of government and the academic communities.

While in Japan, Carter met with the prime minister Tanaka, the future prime minister (Miki), and the past prime minister (Sato). And with his eye on future relationships, he also contacted various American reporters based in Tokyo at the time and arranged to meet with them for drinks and conversation. Some of the reporters wondered at the time what the sense was of spending time talking with a former governor of Georgia. While Jimmy Carter was spending 175 trying to get national recognition, six of his rivals were trying to eliminate each other.

GENERAL ADAPTATION SYNDROME

Introduction

Stress. A word that is used very often today is very misjudged and overlooked. Stress starts with perception. We learn our stress responses throughout our lives and they can be fixed. As we all may know, stress occurs when demands are placed on an organism to adjust or adapt. It is most damaging in situations involving pressure, a lack of control, unpredictability of the stressor, and intense or repeated emotional shocks. Stress also has lasting effects on our health. Intense or prolonged exposure to stress leads to physiological and psychological damage. These stages are associated with General Adaptation Syndrome, also known as G.A.S.

PERCEPTION

Stress starts with perception. What you perceive as stressful may not be stressful for the person next to you. For example, you’re at the local supermarket buying something for dinner. You’re walking up to the express line with three items and the limit is ten. Another guy is also walking up and gets to the line first. You notice that he has more than ten items. This makes you mad. You’re hands start to shake, your heart starts to beat fast, and your muscles tense up. This is an example of stress that is learned and accepted in the American lifestyle that can be fixed.

STRESS IS HARMFUL

Stress is harmful when it is repeated and uncontrollable. Stress translates into disease when the body’s defenses against stress are depleted and drained. The body’s defense against stress is a pattern known as the general adaptation syndrome or G.A.S.

GENERAL ADAPTATION SYNDROME

The general adaptation syndrome consists of three stages the alarm reaction, the stage of resistance, and the stage of exhaustion.

The Alarm Reaction. In this stage the body mobilizes its resources to cope with added stress. The stress starts with the perception, in this case, the guy in the supermarket. The perception leads to the hypothalamus gland signaling the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland signals the adrenal glands to produce more adrenaline and noradrenalin. As these hormones are dumped into the bloodstream, some bodily processes are speeded up. For example, the heart rate speeds up, the blood pressure goes up, our pupils dilate, our muscles tense up, and our breathing becomes more efficient. Our blood is sent away from the digestive tract to the heart, lungs, and large muscles and because it is, our digestion stops. When the digestion stops, the food that we have consumed stops being digested and starts to putrefy in the stomach. As a result, the body starts to produce acid in order to get that food through the system. When the stress is repeated and uncontrolled, during this stage, the body starts to show symptoms. These include headache, fever, sore, “achy” muscles, upset stomach, diarrhea, shortness of breathe, and lack of energy. These symptoms all resemble those of the common cold or flu.

The Resistance Stage. During this stage, the bodily adjustments to stress stabilize. As the body’s defenses come into balance, symptoms of the alarm reaction disappear. Since the symptoms of the alarm reaction disappear, people tend to think things are normal. They are not normal due to the compromise of the immune system during the alarm stage, white blood cells are lost. This means that the person may have a better chance of coping with the original stressor, but the body’s resistance to other stresses is lowered. During this stage is when they first signs of psychosomatic disorders begin to appear.

The Stage of Exhaustion. Continued and uncontrolled stress leads to the exhaustion of the body’s resources. The stress hormones are drained and depleted. It leads to psychosomatic disease, a serious loss of health, or complete collapse.

PSYCHOSOMATIC DISORERS

Psychosomatic disorders are illnesses in which psychological factors contribute to bodily damage or to damaging changes in bodily functioning. The most common problems are gastrointestinal and respiratory like dyspepsia and asthma. Typical problems include eczema, hives, migraine headaches, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, colitis, and heart disease.

STRESS MANAGEMENT

Stress management is the use of behavioral strategies to reduce stress and improve coping skills. A way to reduce stress is to exercise. Exercise should that is vigorous yet enjoyable enough to be done repeatedly. Personally, when I’m in the fight-or-flight response mode, I like to take a run around the block. Since my house is on a hill, it is quite a workout. Another stress reliever is meditation. Meditation is not just sitting in the corner, with your legs crossed and eyes shut. It can be anything you enjoy doing. I like to take short drives in my car around town. I really enjoy topping off my drive with a stop at a park or lake. It relieves my tension to be on the grass, breathing the fresh air that is usually abundant underneath the trees.

Writing Article Response

Beyond Words The Relational Dimensions of Learning to Read and Write

By Judith Lysaker

The article that I have chosen to discuss is called, “Beyond Words The Relational Dimensions of Learning to Read and Write” by Judith Lysaker. The article was wonderful and brought insight to my thinking about children’s learning of language arts. The article is about a young boy who is not reading or writing in class. He goes along with what the other students do, but cannot read a single word from the classic book, Clifford, the Big Red Dog. An adult comes into the class two times a week for eight weeks to tutor the boy on reading and writing. When the eight weeks are up, the boy has learned to read and has “published” his first piece of writing. He is always ecstatic when his tutor comes in and prepares a certain spot for them to work at. When she is tutoring him she notices that he remains physically close to her. When he doesn’t know a word he taps her on the leg. When he reads, he keeps his arm touching hers. The adult tutor concludes that learning to read and write may not be a cognitive and linguistic process for some kids, but rather a personal and social task learned through relationships.

As I mentioned above, this article brought insight to the way that I looked at learning to read and write. For me, it seemed like such a fun and easy process. I believe that my elementary school in Jordan District had a phenomenal reading program that enabled me to develop my writing skills. Reading can be a horrible experience for so many children because they do not have the skills that are necessary for them to improve. If teachers can recognize that each child learns in a different manner, then more could be done to help the kids that are struggling. Just as there are visual, audio, and kinesthetic learners, there are also kids that learn through their emotions. The boy in this article needed the physical closeness to encourage him to learn to read and write. More teachers should bring in tutors to help students instead of labeling them “learning disabled” or sending them to resource. When I was in elementary school I had peers that went to resource that were slow readers and needed help in their writing, but now I wonder if they just needed some different instructional methods that the teacher could have implemented into the regular classroom instead of sending them to the resource room.

After reading this article I want to be careful in my future classroom and try every possible method of teaching reading and writing to my students before I try to label them. I would like to spend time each week reading with each student individually. If I do not have time for this or my class is too large, then I will ask for parent volunteers to come in. I also want to have a spot in my class that is designated for reading and writing only. It will be a cozy environment that will make the children feel accepted and want to read and write. In this spot they can free-read or write in their personal journals. It will be a private place for them to go to each day for fifteen or twenty minutes to unwind and relax.

For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven, taken from the King James Version of the chapter five verse 0 of Matthew.

So what do we say then, how righteous were the Pharisees. Lets look at some of the other things Jesus said about them. Then Jesus said to them (meaning the disciples, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Saducees, Matthew 166. He later clarified that is was the doctrine of the Pharisees, he was referring to. Why would the King of the Jews be displeased with the very men that were carrying on the customs and traditions of the jews?

It is necessary for us to look at the purpose of the Pharisees, who were they?

A member of a strict Jewish sect, holding the Mosiac Law and their own traditions as binding. In Mark chapter the Pharisees qusestioned Jesus keeping company commoners and sinners, walking through a field of corn and eating the ears, his disciples not fasting. If you were to look at all of these. They are making judgements of righteousness through what the eyes see. Instead of the motives of the heart.
