Lazy Beach Days

I have lived near the beach all of my life. I was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, and one of my earliest memories is of digging my fingers into the warm, wet sand. I’ve heard stories of when my mother used to sit me at the water’s edge, and I’d laugh and play as the surf washed up around my chubby legs.

In our elementary school days, my friends and I would spend our summers at the beach, taking turns burying each other in the sand up to our chins. We collected many different types of seashells--pointed, spiral ones that we used to call a unicorn’s horn, conch shells, sand dollar pieces, and not to forget the big beautiful ones that made great necklaces. But mostly, we played in the water, jumping over the high waves, or sitting in the surf as the waves knocked us all around, and screaming at the rush of salt water up our nose.

Then, I was in high school, and the beach was where the gorgeous, sun-bleached surfers rode the waves and walked the shores all day. Now I never entered the water, I looked horrible with wet hair! Instead, my friends and I laid on huge, oversized beach towels, smelling of suntan oils, and baking in the sun. We made a point to turn over about every fifteen minutes so that we wouldn’t burn, well that, and to peep out at the guys.

Now that I’m in college, and working I have little time to visit the beach during the day.

Even so, I enjoy going to the beach at night almost as much as I do during the day. I love walking along the surf under a cast of pale moonlight, listening to the waves pounding the shore, and feeling the sharp seashells against my tender feet. The sound of gentle breezes rustling the sea grass, and the calling of the gulls together make a soothing song.

Though I have always loved the beach, I don’t think it has always loved me back. I can recall quite vividly the horrible, gritty crunch of the mouthful of sand I took when I was little. I just had to find out what the stuff tasted like! I can still taste the burning salt water I gulped a time or two, or three when I was knocked down by a wave. I also haven’t forgotten how hard it is to rid my curly hair of sand, or the irritation of it in the bottom of my swimsuit, or the painful, stinging cuts on my knees and feet from tumbling in the surf. Oh yeah, I can’t possibly forget about the huge beach bag I used to carry when I was in high school--bulging with two or three towels, a portable radio, magazines, bottles of suntan lotion, sunglasses, and a makeup case. By late afternoon the sand was scorching hot, my face and shoulders were blistered raw, my head pounded to the beat of my heart--and that beach bag seemed to weigh twice as much on my way back to the car.

Activities - Case Study 1

1. Write down all the possible ways that a computer could be used to assist the running of the hotel. Give as much detail as possible.

A computer could be used for

Word processing The word processor could be used to write letters, e.g. to write to customers to confirm their booking at the hotel or to order goods from suppliers. Notices and menus could also be produced using the word processor.

Buy cheap computer systems term paper

Desktop Publishing A desktop publishing package can be used to prepare a brochure for the hotel. Advertisements can also be designed for insertion into magazines and newspapers.

Database Details of the customers that visit the hotel can be kept on a database. This would enable the hotel to mail past customers with details of special hotel deals. It would also provide valuable information to the manager to help target the advertising more effectively. A database program can also be used to hold details of the hotels stock.

Spreadsheets Spreadsheets can be used to calculate the hotels accounts. It can also be used as a financial model to help the manager to run the hotel efficiently.

Accounts Package This can be used to keep all the day-to-day accounts on the computer. This would include the income (money received from customers staying at the hotel) and expenditure (money spent on goods and services). The accounts package would then be able to provide all the detail to help the hotels accountant prepare the accounts at the end of each year and provide figures for the tax office and VAT (Value Added Tax) department.

Hotel Package A software package written for hotels which enables booking to be made, accounts kept and reports and bills to be printed.

. Describe in detail all the input and output devices that might be used with the computer(s) for the hotel (include illustrations).

Keyboard This is the most common method of entering data into a computer. The layout of the keyboard is common across many countries and called a QWERTY keyboard. This is because these are the first few keys on the top row of the keyboard. As well as letter and number keys there are also function keys, which can be programmed by the software in use. These keys are marked F1 to F1. Sometimes it is necessary to hold down more than one key at a time. One example is that you can hold the shift key down to get a capital letter. Other keys that need to be held down while others are pressed are Alt and Ctrl (Control).

A keyboard could be used in the hotel to type in details of customers and their accounts.

Concept Keyboards

A concept keyboard might also be used in a hotel in the restaurant for paying customers.

The keyboard consists of a flat surface covered with rows of switches under a membrane. Individual switches of groups of switches can be programmed by the software in use to cause a particular input. The tills at a McDonalds checkout use this type of keyboard. A thin card is placed over the switches with pictures or text on it to represent an item from the menu. When the item is pressed on the keyboard the item is displayed and the price of the item is added to the bill.

Scanner

If the hotel uses the computer to design its advertisements and brochures using a desktop publishing package it may use a scanner. Scanners enable pictures and text to be input to the computer. There are two types of scanner. The less expensive is the hand-held and is rolled across the picture being scanned. The other is a flat bed scanner which will scan an A4 piece of paper or larger which is laid flat on the screen in the same way a photocopier works. Both hand-held and flatbed scanners can either be colour or black and white. Once the object has been scanned into the computer it can be manipulated by the scanning software before being pasted into the document and printed.

As well as inputting pictures or photographs into the computer using a scanner it is also possible to use a camera where instead of film it captures the picture onto a floppy disc. Alternatively, the image from a video camera can be input to the computer using a video board.

Screen

The screen or monitor is the most common output device. It is also known as a VDU (visual display unit) and can be either mono or colour. Mono monitors display white, orange or green characters on a black screen. Mono monitors are far less common now as the price of colour monitors has dropped. Colour monitors allow areas of the screen to be highlighted making data retrieval easier, and therefore increasing productivity.

Most monitors used with computers have 1 to 14 inch screens. The size is always measured diagonally, from corner to corner. However, much larger screens can be used for desktop publishing and CAD (computer aided design).

The quality or clarity of the display is determined by the resolution. The display is made up of tiny dots called pixels.

Printers

The printer is the second most common computer output device after the hotel will certainly have at least one. There are a range of printer types; dot-matrix, daisy wheel, ink-jet, thermal, bubble-jet, chain, drum and laser. The most likely printers to be used in a hotel are the dot-matrix and/or laser printer.

Dot-matrix

The print head of a dot-matrix printer has a set of pins, which strike through the ink ribbon as the head moves across the paper. These printers have been popular for a number of years. They are very flexible as they can print graphics, different types of characters (fonts), large or small text, emboldened and underlined. Because characters are printed as a series of small dots the print quality can be poor. They can also be quite noisy.

Dot-matrix printers are reliable and relatively cheap to buy and run. This makes them popular in applications where the print quality does not have to be perfect. This type of printer could be used in the hotel for producing peoples bills or for internal hotel use but might not be suitable for letters.

Laser printers

These printers give excellent print quality and, as the price of laser printers has dropped slightly, they are becoming more widely used. They work in a similar way to a photocopier. Laser light draws the image onto a drum as a series of tiny dots - 00 dots to the inch (dpi) or 600 dpi on newer machines. Toner (dry powered ink) is applied to the drum which is then transferred to the paper where it is fuse through heat and pressure.

Standard, low cost laser printers used in offices can produce about ten pages per minute. Where much faster printing is required, laser printers costing roughly £100 000 may print at speeds of 00 pages per minute. Laser printers are almost silent in operation and are classified as non-impact printers. Colour laser printers can be purchased but are very expensive.

What Makes a Great Teacher for Students with LD

Introducing the Hybrid Teacher

Jerome J. Schultz, Ph.D.

Director and Clinical Neuropsychologist

Help with essay on What makes a good language teacher?

The Learning Lab @ Lesley University

I was asked by LDOnline to write an article about what makes a good teacher of kids with learning disabilities. I hope that by putting this task in an historical context, it will reflect the realities that educators face and the environments in which they work, and that it pays respect to this very difficult and very important task. The list of traits you will find near the end of this article should not be construed as a “report card” for teachers, nor is it an effort to describe the ideal teacher. It is offered as a way to acknowledge both the challenges and the opportunities that exist for teachers working in tough times.

Having started out my professional career as a middle school special education teacher, by the grace of wonderful mentors, hard work, a great family and good fortune, I have evolved into a neuropsychologist serving as a director of a university based clinic for children and adolescents with learning disabilities and related learning difficulties. Kids come to us because they have trouble learning. Many of them have other things going on that make learning difficult, but most of them have what most people regard as a learning disabilitya neurologically based condition that makes it hard to do many of the tasks required by students in school. For these kids, the unrelenting frustration involved in taking in, processing and producing information is like pushing a large stone up a steep hill. There may be occasional plateaus or small ledges on which the stone can rest (summer vacations?), but most of these kids experience school as a difficult, frustrating and emotionally unsettling place. Too few know the joys that come from repeated successes; too many are beaten down very early by sense that they are supposed to be able to do what the other kids do, and do it as easily, but for some reason, they just can’t.

In the pre-inclusionary times of the mid-seventies and early eighties, college graduates who chose to be special educators ended up working in learning centers, resource rooms or self-contained programs. They had the time to work with a relatively small number of kids and provide them with intensive, direct instruction that was supposed to make a difference. In some cases that model worked; kids learned and moved through school and became successful, happy and productive adults. Although there were methods that were designed to help students overcome or work around their learning disabilities, too often these approaches were not used well enough or long enough to have the desired impact. Also, there was very little done to evaluate the effectiveness of specialized approaches for individual kids, and much of special education was characterized by good intensions and warm-hearted guesswork. We thought that these were the “glory days” of special education by who knows? The pendulum continues to swing…

Over the past two decades, primarily as a consequence of the inclusion movement, we have witnessed a reduction in specialized programs, and a corresponding large-scale return of students with learning (and other) disabilities to “regular” classes. Since a majority of seasoned faculty working in “regular” classrooms were trained as “regular” and not “special” educators, many--despite their excellent track records-- find themselves ill-prepared or inadequately supported to meet the special needs of students who require specialized instruction.

The re-integration of children with so-called special needs into regular classrooms, coupled with the increasing emphasis on standards-based education and “high-stakes” testing, has placed new and difficult demands on students and teachers. It has brought to light the reality that in far too may cases, especially for students of color and whose first language is not English, special education has simply meant making school easier by cutting down the work load and turning down the difficulty level. This (mal?)practice left us with in a large population of students who were not prepared to return to the demands of an integrated regular classroom, especially one in which the train moves at the same speed, on the same track for everyone, where the station-stops are few and far between, and where you’d better hurry to get back aboard before the engine pulls out. The consequence of this situation is that many kids are not being adequately served; both those with learning disabilities and those with other impediments to learning.

So…I am worried. As a psychologist, I am worried about kids and I am worried about their families. And as a teacher educator, I worry about teachers. A lot.

Yet I am optimistic, for I have been to the classroom (hundreds of them, in fact) and there is light. For example, one of the major contributions of inclusion, when well conceived and well supported, has been the transformation that takes place when talented and motivated regular and special educators work together on a team. In my role as a consultant and as a teacher educator in a university that embraces an inclusive philosophy and the practices that support it, I have witnessed the emergence of what I call the Hybrid Teachera new kind of professional who creatively builds bridges between curriculum and kidsall kinds of kids with (to use Mel Levine’s words) “all kinds of minds.” Let me use this opportunity to list some of the characteristics of this teacher, so that you will recognize one when you see her or him. In my view, a professional with many of the traits listed below is the closest thing I can find to a “great teacher” for kids with learning disabilities.

In his book Chaos Making a New Science, James Gleick examines the birth and foundations of chaos theory and fractal geometry. As expressed by Gleick, chaos theory is defined by a close examination of randomness and a method of identifying patterns in phenomena that behave in a manner that is by definition random. For example, one wonders whether there must be some sort of a regular pattern in things such as economics or the weather, both of which move and change within certain limits. In his book, Gleick considers how Benoit Mandelbrot examined the nature of this movement and in so doing, offers, through Mandelbrot’s findings, a unique way of looking at the idea of patterns.

According to Gleick, what Mandelbrot discovered was that a series of events, like prices of cotton for example, are indeed random and hold no apparent pattern when considered relative to each other on a single scale; that is to say, if one looks at today’s price compared to yesterday’s price and that of the day before and so forth, no pattern can be identified. However, if one were to chart the prices from day to day and the separately chart yearly prices, the curves formed by the two charts would match, such that the curve of the yearly or monthly prices would, in closer detail, consist of smaller versions of the same curve. Thus, Mandelbrot found, in certain cases, a pattern or symmetry is to be found not between parallel events or points of information, but between large and small scales. What came out of these findings was a method of understanding irregular shapes and phenomena by examining their very irregularity, based on the idea that the degree of irregularity remains constant across scale. A sense of this is perhaps most easily understood as evident something like a rough piece of land, which has a certain roughness. When looked at from a great distance, the land appears just as rough as from very close up. That is to say, if one were to take a photograph of this piece of land (disregarding the limits of photography due to resolution and such), the degree of roughness would appear the same in the original photo as it would if the image were greatly magnified. Thus, it is not that the phenomenon in question is not random, but that the degree of this randomness is not random. This idea of a constant degree of irregularity is essentially based on the tendency of the large scale to imitate the small scale and vice versa. This tendency and the infinite character of its occurrence within itself are referred to as fractal.

If we extend this idea that a phenomenon maintains a certain level of complexity no matter how much it is magnified, then we must conclude that this principle allows for an infinite amount of detail and thus implies that the phenomenon continues infinitely. For example, a coastline can appear to constitute a particular length. However, the more detail with which we measure this coastline, the longer it becomes; measured with a yardstick, an estimate of the length overlooks certain twists and turns, nooks and crannies, that can be measured with a ruler, such that measurement with a ruler will yield a greater estimate of the length, and even greater when measured by the inch, the centimeter, the millimeter, and so forth ad infinitum. Therefore, using this principle of the fractal, the length of a coastline is infinite. In Gleick’s words, “in the mind’s eye, a fractal is a way of seeing infinity.” However, while we can say whatever we like about this coastline, it cannot be denied that the piece of land outlined by it is of a finite area; regardless of its coastline, Britain clearly does not extend infinitely into the rest of Europe or into the Atlantic Ocean. The mind-boggling but undoubtedly accurate consequence of this analysis is that it is possible for a finite amount of space to be circumscribed within an infinitely long line.

It thus seems that all we are left with after examining this system of fractal analysis is an unsettling bouquet of paradoxes. Patterns of randomness. Infinite lines surrounding finite spaces. What can we possibly make of these absurd combinations of words? From such descriptions, it would seem that any coherent understanding must be hopelessly complex. Although this conclusion is admittedly tempting, we must perhaps consider instead that it is not the above described tendencies of the universe that are complex, but rather our language for understanding them. Gleick recognizes that Mandelbrot’s observations run somewhat contrary to the common language of scientific understanding “How did nature manage to evolve such complicated architecture? Mandelbrot’s point is that the complications exist only in the context of traditional Euclidean geometry.” In considering the reasons why the system of blood vessels, which is certainly fractal, has not been widely analyzed as such by members of the field, Gleick remarks that “the language of anatomy tends to obscure the unity across scale.” The language of science is not intuitively conducive to a fractal understanding.

Help with essay on Infinty and Being: Chaos and the Fractal Universe

On this point, it is necessary to acknowledge that scientific understanding does indeed have a specific language, which is just as much shaped by subjective experience and culture as any national tongue. This point is illuminated in Brian Rotman’s book Signifying Nothing The Semiotics of Zero. Rotman describes the process by which the use of zero and of the number system that we commonly use today came into being. He illustrates how a common system of expressing and communicating numerical quantities had to be consciously developed. Upon considering numbers and quantification this way, one is forced to look at science and mathematics in a decidedly different light than the one we are used to. In light of Rotman’s description of this evolution of the way numbers are expressed, it comes to mind that numerical discourse can be considered as a language, and when considered as such, we end up with a much different view of all its implications. Just as a verbal language affects (perhaps even creates?) the way we conceive the thoughts we express through it, so numerical language must influence the thoughts we are capable of.

For the most part, we like to think of numbers and mathematics as uniquely objective and universal, as a raw truth that self-selects based on what works and what does not, what makes sense and what does not. We consider that in this manner, it self-generates. This view, however, becomes more ambiguous when we consider that we choose the way it expresses itself. Its language then, like the language of any thought, is not necessarily contained within it, but rather is assigned (perhaps somewhat arbitrarily?). If we then consider that the language of mathematics is not objective (simply by virtue of being a language) and also that the language in which ideas are expressed often defines the structure and substance of those ideas, we must consider that mathematics is perhaps just as subjective as any other field of thought, and we end up with a very different picture of scientific and mathematical discourse.

The truth is that this fractal picture of the universe simply does not fit into the language by which we understand our lives. If we can consider space as fractal, then surely we must also consider a fractal interpretation of time. If we can take a finite amount of time and understand it as an endless structure of smaller and smaller patterns within themselves, then we must conclude that this finite amount of time is at once infinite. Given this, what do we make of the space of a lifetime? Surely we cannot consider it as infinite. Five minutes, an hour, a day, or a year goes by, and that space of time is over; there are tangible things that we did or didn’t do within it. If infinity is defined as the time in which all things that can happen do happen, surely infinity has not passed within a single second. But perhaps this is exactly what Mandelbrot meant; a second is indeed infinite because everything that will ever happen has happened within it and within the moments within the second, and will continue to happen in the same fractal pattern for hours and years and centuries ad infinitum. Indeed this would imply that thought also is fractal, that all human experience occurs in some chaotic pattern. Perhaps the tides of history and human thought behave in an ever-repeating self similar process. We can then extend the example of the curve of cotton prices to suggest that the same curve, the same essential model of thought and experience, is formed in a single second, any second, of a single individual’s life as is achieved by the whole of humanity after thousands of years. A fractal consideration of existence would ultimately lead to a very dismal outlook; indeed it would appear to render our conception of the self, the individual life, and all of this elusive idea of historical progress meaningless.

If we are doomed to forever repeat ourselves in an endlessly self-similar process, if the curve of any individual life is already ordained by its place in a larger but identical curve and by its composition of smaller identical curves, then why bother? Fractals rob us of identity. Inherent in this dismal way of thinking is an assumption that infinity renders us meaningless. Identity is able to exist only because it is finite. This idea of infinity simply does not fit into the structure of our minds. And yet we are ever inclined to consider it. What then, can this concept of infinity possibly mean to us? It is somewhat of a paradox and a lost effort for us to conceive of an existence that continues infinitely, because we cannot readily identify this characteristic in any tangible aspect of our lives or identities. Why then do we think about infinity? Did we invent it? Why would we invent a concept that we cannot possibly understand? Examined in the light above rendered, it comes to mind that perhaps we invented this idea simply because we cannot understand it; this seems to be the only feasible reason, as it would appear that this idea of infinity is definitively contrary to the way we understand ourselves and the world around us. Indeed perhaps this is the primary nature scientific inquiry. It reveals an inherent desire to reach beyond ourselves and our own distinctly human understanding and to achieve some sort of objectivity, separate from the subjective human experience. It is perhaps this effort that foremost characterizes scientific discourse. But this of course presents an inherent dilemma; while we are constantly fascinated with the question of what exists beyond our own experience and independent of it, we have nothing but the subjective tools of human understanding with which to engage in this effort. This is the central paradox that sustains rational inquiry. It is most eloquently articulated by Immanuel Kant in the preface to his Critique of Pure Reason

The human reason has this peculiar fate that in one species of its knowledge it is burdened by questions which, as prescribed by the very nature of reason itself, it is not able to ignore, but which, as transcending all its powers, it is also not able to answer.

Three Fathers and How They Influenced Their Children

The definition of influence is the power to affect people or events, also to control or move by power, physical or moral; to affect by gentle action. Parents teach you how to walk and say your first words. They teach you right from wrong and acknowledged the good. They also teach you lessons about the bad. Writers have made reference to this parent/child relationship for years. Three fathers that have influenced their children would be Okonkwo from Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, Lord Capulet from Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, and Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. All of these fathers have influenced their children in numerous ways.

Okonkwo influenced his son in many ways. Okonkwo influenced his son Nwoye at numerous occasions. One occasion where Okonkwo influenced Nwoye would be when Okonkwo kills Ikemefuna. Ikemefuna is a hostage from a neighboring village. Okonkwo likes him, but he has to sacrifice him because his father killed a clansman and to prevent war his father gave him away to the Igbos (Okonkwo’s Tribe).

Responsible disobedience must be practiced in a manner that most closely reflects our humanistic conscience, thus a balance between can be found between blind obedience and anarchy.

“Humanistic conscience” is the internal voice that speaks what we truly believe, based on our values and morals. Contrastingly our “authoritarian conscience” is the internal voice which tells us what action or thought would please our superior. One can conclude that by obeying their “AC” they are still being true to themselves, wanting to help a superior is a responsibility even if it is an action you would not do regularly, in actuality the person is not being true to themself, only when one follows their “H.C.” are they listening to their humanity, the essence of who they are. Perhaps it is that because obedience is a deeply ingrained behavior tendency that over-rides our most basic ethical standards that we can so easily succumb to forces that stray us away from our “H.C.”.

By implementing “RDO” in our daily lives a staunchness, standing for what we believe in rather than blindly following the group, will be required. Courage is the cornerstone of steadfastness when one is guided into an action they do not believe in. In Asch’s line comparison experiment it was stated that individuals make a mistake in less than one percent of the trials, conversely, when placed in a group where they became a minority the individual’s error frequency increased 6.8 times. Without the ability for individuals to maintain their opinions there is little hope that “RDO” can effectively be utilized in our society. Again we must embrace disobedience adequately so that our principles are not diminished through group thinking.

Placing two subjects with “like minds” together ”. This proved effective as over half of the tested subjects maintained their independence as long as they had a like-minded dissident at their side. Although effective this needs to be a last resort as it only encourages group thinking. Being apart of a group yields those who are “resistant to change, equipped with sacred assumptions about which there can be no discussion”(Lessing 5) and therefore no more a dissident than those the individual originally broke from. To maintain a true identity

A group mind will inevitably lead to blind obedience, the following of orders or actions without questioning the fundamentals behind groups or ideas. Lessing states that, “what is dangerous is... not understanding the social laws that govern groups”. There is nothing wrong with being apart of a group, I believe that it encourages belonging, an important part of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The only disadvantage of existing as apart of a group is how easily one can become part of the group mind. It is nearly impossible to sustain a dissident opinion on any topic when there are ten other “dissident opinions” desperately vying to be heard.

Anarchy, a state of total disorder due to a lack of control can erupt anywhere without some form of controlling factor. Dominance preventing anarchy can be imposed from government, religion, or society, all of which are incredibly influential in our daily lives. “RD” towards any of these institutions can contribute towards anarchy, however, for this paper I will limit my discussion to “RD” as it relates to society’s control over an individual.

If individuals became completely disobedient towards their society’s governing, abandoning all values established by society, anarchy would break out. Rioting would occur through down towns, department stores would be looted, vicious murders would be committed in playgrounds behind schools, there would no unwritten social laws that are followed everyday. It could be argued that actions of these extremes would not occur if the population disregarded society’s laws because individuals would only be striking out against society, not actual laws set by our governments.

A historian once wrote “The British ruled the colonies for one hundred and fifty years and lost them in twelve.” The British rule in the New World really did begin when the empire began to establish major settlements in the colonies in the 160s and 0s, indeed, nearly one hundred and fifty years before the colonies’ declaration of independence in 1776. Following the century and a half of British rule, there were a number of events in the twelve years between the declaration and the end of the Revolutionary War, that led to the demise of British rule in the colonies of North America.

If I am going to discuss the events that took place during the Revolution, I must first explain the events that led to the Revolution, and the colonial revolt against the mother country. After the end of the Seven Years’ War in America, British control of the colonies began to become more and more controlling. With the efforts of Britain to have more direct control over the colonies, the colonies began to seem more and more uncontrollable. In King George’s attempts to hush colonial resistence, excessive acts and laws were passed by Britain in the colonies, from the Proclamation line of 176 to the Writs of Assistance to the Sugar and Stamp Acts to the Townshend Duties. All of the events from 176 on seemed to upset and force the colonists to rebel. The colonists finally ended the British rule and declared their reasons for independence in 1776, although the war had already really begun in Massachusetts.

In the early battles of the war, the hope for independence seemed to diminish with the patriots’ repeated losses. Though the country he was fighting for was not yet a country, George Washington understood that to defeat Britain, he did not really have to defeat Britain, but only prolong the war until the British taxpayers were fed up with paying for the seemingly useless cause. Despite the repeated British victories early, Washington was able to keep his army fighting. Then, in October of 1777, British troops planned to attempt a three-pronged attack on Albany, New York. The attack failed miserably and the patriots claimed a turning point victory at the battle of Saratoga. With battles still being fought in the west, General Henry Clinton and his British troops, took Charles Town. He then returned to New York and left the rest of the south to Lord Charles Cornwallis, who went on to destroy the rebel troops at Camden. Cornwallis was then defeated at Cowpens and Kings Mountain, and led what was left of his troops into Virginia. Cornwallis was then crushed at Yorktown, which is thought to be the last major battle of the American Revolution. With Cornwallis’s defeat, the British taxpayers were finally pushed too far and lost their will to continue fighting.

While the battles of the west and other parts of the country were still occurring, the American diplomats began peace talks in Paris in June of 178. By 178 the Treaty of Paris is signed and the Revolutionary War is over, and by 1788 the colonies adopt their new Constitution and are finally recognized as and individual country of their own.

When I first started research for in vitro fertilization, I wanted to know who the protagonist and antagonist were toward this medical procedure. While doing my research I found that stem cell research was always mentioned in regards to in vitro. So I decided to change my paper and find out who is for and against stem cell research. By the end of this I hope to make sure that stem cell research is used to treat diseases and gets federal funding.

Stem cell research began with Doctor James Thomson, a biologist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He suggests that stem cells offer great promises for treating diseases. He hopes that the use of embryo cells will help repair damaged tissues. Another doctor from Stanford University, Doctor Irving Weissman is another champion fighting to expound to legislators and lawmen alike that it would be wrong to restrict stem cell research.

During the 000 elections the debate over stem cell research began to heat up between the political parties. The National Institute of Health (NIH) rules in January 1, “that federal funding could be used to sponsor research using certain stem cells.”

Help with essay on invitro

Even though there had been a ban on federal funding since 16. The NIH went on to explore the ethical and scientific issues surrounding stem cell research with the aim of producing guidelines for researchers. In August, The National Bioethics Advisory Commission issued a report on stem cell arguing that the potential benefits of the research is justified federal funding for derivation as well as use of stem cell from embryos and fetal tissue. After the NIH put out the guidelines of stem cell research, there were enthusiastic responses from both friends and foes.

Pro-life organizations mailed huge quantities of letters and postcards opposing the guidelines, particularly the use of cells derived from embryos. Due to the focus on embryonic stem cell awareness was raised to Congress. A group of Senators, led by Sen. Brownback signed a letter urging the NIH to withdraw the guidelines. Other senators such as Sen. Trent Lott argued that the guidelines violated the embryo research ban by allowing researchers to destroy human embryos. To counter these claim the American Association for the Advancement of science states “ that in the natural reproductive process, human eggs are often fertilized but fail to implant in the uterus. Thus a fertilized egg, may have the potential for human life cannot not be considered equivalent to a human being until it has at least been implanted in to a women’s uterus.” After that being said over sixty-one senators’ urge President Bush to okay stem cell funding.

Sen. John Kerry initiated a letter signed by forty-eight Democrats and eleven Republicans. The same eleven Republicans signed a separate letter initiated by Sen. Arlen Specter to endorse federal funding for research in the past. This group of representatives felt it was important to make it clear that more than just a handful of senators felt strongly about the issue of stem cell. Specter believed “that there were about a dozen additional members of his party most of whom are anti-abortion who would endorse taxpayer funding for the studies because of the embryonic cells potential for fighting disease.” Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle is a strong supporter of federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research feels that if President Bush moves forward to ban federal funding that

the senate would vote to fund life-saving research.

On August 001, President Bush did support limited federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. It was a controversial decision that he had weighed for months. In the beginning President Bush was totally against stem cell research.

During this time he was implored by Pope John Paul II to reject such funding. President Bush allowed funding for only those stem cells that already had been extracted from destroyed embryos. This would come from women who undergo in vitro fertilization and leave the remaining embryos to either be destroyed or used for scientific research. The church believes that “stem cell research in itself is not wrong, but creating and/or destroying human life in order to mime stem cells.” The National Health Council had mixed feelings over President Bush’s announcement. “While glad that President Bush recognized the importance of stem cell research it was disappointed that this research would never realize its full potential.” Some of the major problems with stem cell research is whether or not that the cells would be used improperly. One of the big fears is the possibility of cloning. On July 10, 001, the House of Representatives voted 65-16 in favor of a bill to ban all forms of human cloning, including the cloning of human embryos for the purposes of stem cell research. The bill, H.R. 505-Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 001, Sponsored by Rep. Dave Weldon made “cloning a human a federal crime.” Another problem faced by stem research is the potential for parents to make a designer baby. This is were they can pick the color of the eyes, sex and remove any defective traits before the embryo is even attached to the women’s uterus.

One of the major things needed to complete this study on stem cell is to ensure that I have written permission form the donors of the embryonic eggs not used during in vitro fertilization. The potential for great use of stem cell is not only limited to cure spinal cord injuries, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes and stroke. A few scientists believe that the emphasis should be placed on adult stem-cell research, which could pose fewer ethical questions.

Jesse

The book Jesse, by Gary Soto, is about two young brothers; Abel and Jesse who were determined to make a living as Mexican-Americans in the unfair world. Jesse experiences many new and strange feelings, as he becomes independent. Slowly, he comes to know what the world is about, and learns what it is to be envious and insecure.

The hardships Jesse endured not only made him smarter, but they made him more insecure. For example, when Jesse invited his mother to the art show, she asked which painting was his, “[Jesse] lied and told her that [his] was the giraffe poking his head through the hedge.” (18) Jesse was ashamed of what he had become. He couldn’t face up to his mother and show her his real feelings and true self. In addition, while Jesse was on his date with Minerva he thought, “…I was smelling more like a boy then a date. I peered down at my blood stained jeans and covered it with my right hand.” () Jesse was very insecure of himself and his appearance. He cared what other people thought and was not confident about the way things were going. Jesse spent a lot of time worrying about what people thought of him, rather than trying to understand that people truly did accept him.

There were times when Jesse was very envious of his brother. For example, when he realized that Glenda and Abel liked each other, “[He] thought about Abel and Glenda- ways to keep [his] brother away from her…” (). He was very jealous of the relationship between his brother and Glenda. Abel was the only person Jesse had left, and he didn’t want to lose him. Furthermore, when Leslie, Glenda, Abel, and Maureen wanted to go out on a double date Jesse thought, “The four of them wanted to go somewhere and abel wanted me to stay…they wanted me to say yes. They want to go out as couples, I was odd man out.” (10) Jesse was a very sensitive person and to have his brother do this to him, hurt him a lot. Not only was he jealous, but Jesse also felt excluded from the group because they wanted to do something without him. In his life, Jesse spent a lot of time wishing he could be like other people or have what others had, instead of accepting who he was.

Jesse was a very sensitive teenager whose troubles only made him stronger. He faced many injustices throughout his life, but was determined to make a living. In the end, all of Jesse’s hard work and faithful ways paid off; He learned from the past, and looked forward to the future.

“The Third Man” is a film about loyalty that takes place in war-torn Vienna. In the opening scene Holly Martins, an American writer, is getting off a train. He has come to Vienna because an old friend of twenty years, Harry Lime, says he has found him a job and has offered to help him out. However, when Holly arrives at Harry’s apartment, the porter informs him that Harry is dead. Holly, astonished by this information, sets out to attend Harry’s funeral. After the service, Holly is offered a ride from Major Calloway, an officer who had been investigating Harry. He tells Holly that Harry had been involved in a scandal but Holly doesn’t believe it. After hearing this Holly becomes very suspicious about the circumstances of his friend’s death and decides to investigate for himself.

The rest of the story unfolds as a classic murder mystery. As Holly investigates he discovers new facts that don’t jive with the eyewitness accounts. New information not only sheds new light on the accident that took his friend’s life, it also sheds new light on the morality of Holly’s friend. Holly was an honest law-biding gentleman and believed Harry was as good-natured as well. The facts seem to reveal a different side of Harry, a side Holly was never aware of. Harry was involved in a racquet that was responsible for diluting penicillin and reselling it for profit. This racquet caused many children to become deathly ill because they were receiving inadequate medication. When Holly is presented with this fact he begins to question his loyalty to his friend.

Holly’s investigating leads to a dramatic scene, where we first see that Harry is actually still alive. Later Harry and Holly meet and talk about the illegal and immoral acts Harry is responsible for. During this conversation Harry offers Holly a part in the scandal, after Holly refuses, Harry insinuates a threat. He follows up this threat by saying he could never actually hurt Holly, and he knows Holly would never hurt him. After they part Holly struggles with his loyalty. Should he leave Vienna and let the police deal with Harry or should he help the police catch his unlawful friend. In the end Holly decides to help the police catch Harry, which leads them on a foot chase through the sewers beneath Vienna. In one of the final scenes, Holly finds himself face to face with Harry and with his gun fixated on Harry. Holly must make a decision; should he let Harry escape or should he shoot his friend who is responsible for so many deaths. Off camera, in the distant tunnel, we hear a gun shot. This time Harry is dead and the movie ends where it began, at Harry’s funeral.

There are many beautiful scenes throughout the movie. There are scenes that take advantage of light and frame composition. Some that use long shots and obscured viewpoints. One example is the growing monstrous shadow of a balloon salesman as he approaches the corner of the street. This scene seems to create anticipation. Are we to believe this is Harry coming around the corner? What reasons do we have to believe Harry will be a monster when he shows himself? Another great scene is the very last shot of the film. A long shot showing the road lined with trees fading into the distance. The leaves have fallen off all the trees and covered the road. Even though it’s a black and white film you can see the fall colors and feel the crisp autumn air. Holly leans against a jeep as Anna walks past him and out of the frame. A beautiful scene but what is its significance? Even after some research I found that others acknowledged its beauty but could offer no explanation for it. It seems to me that all these wonderful scenes were done simply because they could be done. The scenes are amazing and probably cutting edge for its time, but offer no real insight to the story. Perhaps they could be compared to the meaningless special effects that saturate movies today. Something else to consider is the acting ability of the time.

Cheap Custom Essays on the third man

The characters were stiff and uninspiring, I felt no connection with them. It was as though they had been instructed to say a line, take four steps across the room, turn a quarter turn, and say their next line. I felt as though I was watching marinates being controlled by an invisible puppet master, that is, until Harry (Orson Wells) showed up to meet Holly at the Ferris Wheel. Suddenly the screen came to life. Harry moved about the set on his own free will. He said whatever came to mind, he said what ever he felt, he was not bound by a script or controlled by an off screen director. He moved and spoke naturally and for a few minutes I saw a real person I could connect with. Then he left screen and with him the life he gave the film. He was a truly talented actor in his time.

I believe the evolution of actors is much like the evolution of athletes. Athletes are constantly breaking records. For example, every few years someone sets a new record for the high jump, 100-meter dash, or most home runs in a season. In 17 Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs in one season, in 18 Sammy Sosa hit 66, and in 001 Barry Bonds hit 70. Babe was great ball player in his time but athletes continue to break his record. Like athletes, actors are continually surpassing their predecessors as well. The story was appealing and the plot interesting but the characters were simply not inviting. If “The Third Man” had been filmed in modern day I probably would have found it exceptional. It doesn’t need Hollywood stars; it would be best with no preconceptions about the characters. Like many old movies it simply needs actors who can act.

The Lion King displays the full array of all of the seven sacraments including

Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Marriage.

The presentation of Simba displays the sacrament of Baptism. Many biblical allusions are made, such as the heavens opening up and having birds flying over which can be paralleled to the Baptism of Christ. Also Rafiki breaking the gourd over Simba’s head and sprinkling it with sand and water is much like the traditional Christian Baptisms, which we perform today. Also you could even consider Zazu the godfather because he was at the presentation, is a close personal friend of the family, and constantly is protecting and watching over Simba.

The sacrament of Confirmation is found when Mufasa explains to Simba on the rock the dominion of the lions and how life goes full circle. He does this to Simba at an early age much like the Confirmation is done to children at a young age. This speech by Mufasa prepares Simba for his role in the animal kingdom like Confirmation prepares kids for their role in God’s Kingdom.

Cheap Custom Essays on The Sacraments in the Lion King

The Eucharist is symbolized many ways. Scar offering the zebra leg to the hyenas is much like the Eucharist in the sense that the hyenas eat the leg and in return accept Scar as their leader. Christians drink the blood and eat the body of Christ to show their acceptance of Him. Also Simba eating the bugs shows his acceptance of Timon and Pumba. When we take the Eucharist, we are being welcomed in to God’s Kingdom not unlike Simba being welcomed into Timon and Pumba’s home.

Whenever Simba has done something that he regrets he goes through the sacrament of Reconciliation. His crying always signifies his sin, his guilt, and his remorse. When Simba went to the elephant graveyard, he was scolded by his father but then forgiven when Mufasa talked with him. A confession is much like this; the sinner talks with a priest or a “father” and confesses what they have done and are then granted forgiveness by the priest. The song Hakuna Matata was Simba’s reconciliation for the death of his father because it freed Simba of his guilt.

Timon and Pumba taking care of Simba after he had fainted in the desert is the example we receive of Anointing of the Sick. Also Rafiki helping Simba find peace in his heart shows Rafiki taking care of the spiritually sick.

The distinct Holy Order that we see is Rafiki, who obviously symbolizes a priest. Rafiki was the one who presented Simba. Rafiki was the one Simba came to for repentance. Also Rafiki always uses precise movements and almost always uses his thumb to do rituals, almost as if were his consecrated finger. Just as a priest’s base of operations is the church, Rafiki’s base of operations is the tree of life where he performs many of his rituals. Timon and Pumba could be considered friars because they lead humble lives, live on bugs which are not exactly as extravagant, and are isolated from much of the jungle as a monk would be secluded from the outside world.

The Marriage sacrament is shown when Simba is “betrothed” to Nala. Therefore arranged marriages are part of the animal society in the movie. Simba does eventually marry Nala and they have a daughter who is then later presented as many husband and wives do.

The Success of A Nation

September 11th 001 was a painful day for all Americans in the world. When the two twin towers, the landmark of New York City, collapsed, American people were crushed. I still clearly remember my reaction of horror and disbelief. When the first time I watched the tragic news on television on that day, I still thought the terrorist attacks were just one of Hollywood¡¯s action movies, which was perfectly shot in New York. However, when the news repeated straightly for the whole day, my tears started shedding down from my eyes. I¡¯ve never seen so many people die. This wasn¡¯t Hollywood. They were real planes, real buildings and real people. Like many other American generations, I had never experienced a war, and this idea would never occur to me. I used to think we live in a peaceful world. However, on September 11th 001, I and all Americans were snapped back from our fanciful world to the unstable world which was filled with angers and fears. What went wrong? Who are we that these outsiders wanted to harm us?

These are the questions David Halberstam attempts to answer in his essay ¡°Who We Are,¡± in which he discusses the changes of American people in two major attacks of American history 114¡¯s Pearl Harbor and 001¡¯s terrorist attacks. Back at those days of Pearl Harbor, people were united and clearly aware of the tragic consequence. Under a patient and thoughtful leadership of the 5th President of the U.S., Kennedy, American people readily involved themselves in the crisis and won the World War II. However, today, when September 11 happened, American people were rather panic. It took them quite a while to realize the consequence of this tragedy. Under the leadership of George Bush, American people decided to strike back quickly rather than analyze the crisis patiently. In Halberstam¡¯s point of view, he believes ¡°Challenged in the right way and properly led, in a free society, they will almost invariably do the right thing¡± (1). Certainly, a right challenge is able to gather people together emotionally; then a thoughtful leadership is a consequence and a necessary element to make people stand as one consciously. However, rather than a free nation, I think the cohesion of a nation and people¡¯s sense of responsibility are the key to ¡°doing the right thing¡±.

A huge crisis is the primary motive to gather people from all walks of life. In people¡¯s daily lives, they are always busy making their own livings. They barely have anything in common. However, when a life threatening challenge happens, people tend to come together to help and share their emotions with one another. That¡¯s because one of the common rights of human beings---the right of living, is intimidated. For example, like the terrorist attacks in the U.S., the deadly disease, SARS, in China was a huge life threatening crisis to all Chinese people. The disease threatened Chinese people¡¯s health and violated their rights of living. Emotionally, people came out from different places in the society to share their anxiety and to help and encourage each other because they are all suffering the same crisis and fighting the same enemies. As long as people¡¯s personal health and life security are threatened, they will come out as one and speak in one voice to defend their lives.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on The Success of A Nation

However, we need a guideline to make sure that every person is conscious of the crisis, so a good leadership plays a very important role here. By ¡°good leadership¡± I mean a responsible leadership that always put people¡¯s interests in the first place, and constantly have people¡¯s safety and well being at heart. During the time of the pestilence, Chinese government did wonderful jobs. First of all, the leader of China, chairman Hu gave speech to encourage people to face the difficulties and call on people to work together with one heart and one mind. Soon Chinese government made a whole set of efficient decisions, like setting up SARS prevention funds, establishing organizations and commands to prevent and control SARS, making laws to administer SARS and rapidly instituting a public and correct reporting system of the pestilence. Last but not least, the leaders from different cities rushed down to visit SARS patients and salute people who worked day and night at the front line of the SARS war. Here, government plays a leading role. They can heal people¡¯s wound, steady their nerves and make them be conscious of the challenge.

Admittedly, a challenge can get people¡¯s attentions, and thoughtful leadership can guide people to make right decisions, but the key point is the people themselves. Government is just a small group of talented people. They can persuade people to make good decisions, but they can not make decisions for them. In a challenge, people are actually playing a decisive part. First of all, people need to trust and be confident of their government, like students to instructors. A positive interaction between government and its people is very important. This is what we call ¡°the cohesion of a nation¡±. It is a long time process. It also takes a lot of effort to work on. In a way, Chinese government has done a very good job in this department. The best example of that is the SARS war. People put their hundred percent trust in their leaders. They fought together with one heart and one mind. This made government¡¯s work much easier and efficient.

Moreover, the good qualities inside of people are very important as well. They have to abandon their selfishness and to understand the relationship between themselves and the whole society---protecting others before protecting themselves. For instance, during the war with SARS, many Chinese medical workers risked their lives to help all those SARS patients; some of them even sacrificed their lives in the battle. In the meantime, people also need to have strong sense of responsibility. At this point, people are able to think thoroughly and take responsible actions. In the SARS battle, some Chinese people lacked senses of responsibility. Though they knew they carried SARS diseases, they still went out to play. There were even some SARS patients who escaped from the hospital and went to take shower in a public bathhouse. From here, we can see that just a challenge and wonderful leadership are not enough to make people do the right thing. Most importantly are the cohesion of a nation and the qualities of people themselves.

People are the same all over the world. It doesn¡¯t matter where they live and what kinds of societies they grow in. As long as a country¡¯s governments, who always put people¡¯s interests as a first priority, have their responsible people as their audience, I believe the nation can conquer every crisis in the world.

.1 Chemical Elements and Water

̢ۢ The three commonest chemical elements of life are carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. They are part of all the main organic compounds in living organisms.

̢ۢ Other elements are also needed by living organisms including nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, iron and sodium.

̢ۢ

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on 2.1 Chemical Elements and Water

Element Role in plants or animals

Nitrogen Part of the amine groups of amino acids and therefore proteins.

Calcium Needed to male the mineral tat strengthens bones and teeth.

Phosphorus Part of the phosphate groups in ATP and DNA molecules.

Iron Needed to make hemoglobin and thus to carry oxygen in blood

Sodium Used in neurons (nerve cells) for the transmission of nerve impulses.

̢ۢ An atom is a single particle of a chemical element. It has uncharged particles. An ion is an atom that either gains or loses electrons. It has charged particles are either positive or negative. E.g. if a sodium atom (Na) loses an electron, it becomes a sodium ion (Na+).

̢ۢ

The Properties of Water

Name of the property Outline of the property Significance of the property to living organisms

Transparency Light can pass through water. Light can reach structures inside living organisms such as chloroplast in plant cells and the retina in the human eye. It can also reach organism that use freshwater or seawater as their habitat.

Cohesion Water molecule stick to each other because of the hydrogen bonds that form between them. Light can pass through water.

Solvent properties Many different substances dissolve in water because of its polarity. Inorganic particles such as sodium ions and organic substances such as glucose can dissolve. Solvent properties of water allow many substances to be carried dissolved in water in the blood of animal and the sap of plants.

Heat capacity

Boiling points and freezing points Water has a large heat capacity. This means that large amounts of energy are needed to raise its temperature. The energy is needed to break some of tits bonds. This heat energy is given out again when the water is cooled.

The boiling point of water (100 C) is relatively high, because, to change it from liquid to a gas, all of the hydrogen bonds between the water molecules have to be broken.

Water also freezes at a relatively high temperature, but because it becomes less dense as it cools to freezing point, ice forms at the surface first.

The temperature of water tends to remain quite stable. This is useful for organisms such as fish that use water as a habitat. Blood, which is mainly composed of water, can carry hear from warmer parts of the body to cooler parts.

In natural habitats on Earth, water rarely boils. Living organisms could not survive if the water inside them boiled.

The ice that forms on the surface of lakes or seas insulates the water underneath, so living organisms can survive there.

Cooling effect of evaporation Water can evaporate at temperatures below boiling point. Hydrogen bonds have to be broken to do this. The heat energy needed to break the bonds is taken from the liquid water, cooling it down. Evaporation of water from plant leaves (transpiration) and from the human skin (sweat) has useful cooling effects.

• Coolant – thermal properties

• Transport medium – cohesion, solvent properties and thermal properties.

• Habitat – cohesion and thermal properties.

Why a Graduate Degree?

Due to the technological upheaval of the last two decades it has become more and more obvious that the competition is becoming quite stiff in terms of career advancement and career security leading thereby to a series of questions as to what really is the solution for it, is it on the job training, experience or education. Here getting a degree is related to getting knowledge at least in the sense that one can perform whatever activity you are indulging in, in a better way. Knowledge of course doesn’t necessarily guarantee wisdom but may open a path to become wiser then before. Acquiring knowledge can be done in many ways like reading books, hearing, seeing, researching, studying, etc. There are at least two schools of thoughts and it is quite obvious what they are, one is to be completely ignorant like in the quote “Ignorance is Bliss” and like Oscar Wilde in one of his famous dramatic works The Importance of being Earnest has Lady Bracknell say “I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound” (1.1). And again there is a contrasting thought so aptly expressed by Emerson in his essays about education in which he says “ Humanly speaking, the school, the college, society, make the difference between men. All the fairy tales of Aladdin or the invisible Gyges or the talisman that opens kings palaces or the enchanted halls underground or in the sea are any fictions to indicate the one miracle of intellectual enlargement. When a man stupid becomes a man inspired, when one and the same man passes out of the torpid into the perceiving state, leaves the din of trifles, the stupor of the senses, to enter into the quasi-omniscience of high thought--up and down, around, all limits disappear. No horizon shuts down. He sees things in their causes, all facts in their connection”.

This being said and the question of whether to or whether not to has to reside entirely with the individual because even though he may want to, he may not have the resources, the time commitment or have other problems and even if he has all these things he may be of the school of thought that education can be garnered in another way not necessarily advocating ignorance but rather a different theory that experience, self-education may be the best methods of getting knowledge or he may believe that structured education is not so important to succeed in life. Each individual has their own reasoning behind their pursuit of a graduate degree. Professional and career goals, self-improvement, status in society, and of course monetary reasons, are just a few motivating factors. Of course it is important to understand whether education can be achieved through a structured way or an unstructured way, here referred as on the job training, experience, etc and obtaining a graduate degree or any degree from a reputed university as a structured way of learning and acquiring knowledge.

Even though I am a believer of experience and have been on job for nearly 1 years and learnt a lot, still think that learning, even self-directed learning rarely occurs in the true sense, even though have acquired a bit of knowledge and education through self-education and on the job training but have come to believe what Jarvis, Holford and Griffin say in The Theory and Practice of Learning “in splendid isolation from the world in which the learner lives; it is intimately related to that world and affected by it” (11). What one wants to learn, what is offered, and the ways in which one learns are determined to a large extent by the nature of the society at any particular time. As Merriam and Caffarella comment “It can also be argued that the nature of society at any particular point in time determines the relative emphasis placed on adult learning. In preindustrial societies, the rate of change was such that what a person needed to know to function as an adult could be learned in childhood. In societies hurrying to catch up, however, and in our own society with its accelerated rate of change, the urgency of dealing with social realities lies with adults. Society no longer has the luxury of waiting for its youth” (5).

Cheap Custom Essays on Why a Graduate Degree

After completing my Bachelor’s degree in 18 I was of the opinion that further education is futile and wanted to get a job immediately and break away from the financial dependence. At that time it seemed the right thing to do and in retrospective may have been, considering the conditions at that time even did not bend under peer pressure to continue further. Then during the course of my jobs I became aware that some individual’s with higher education always got promoted sometimes even though their intellect and achievements seemed far lesser then me, of course this was my view and it may have been generated out of frustration at not being given the correct credit for my dedication, commitment and achievements. Also during that time came across many individuals who had higher education and honestly started admiring their depth of knowledge and grasp as they were at an advantage of already knowing some techniques to do things faster. They taught me a lot but then they couldn’t teach me all. This all had a subtle change in me and I started believing that maybe I should also get a graduate degree but never really got to doing it, kept on postponing it giving various excuses to myself like not having time, couldn’t do justice to it, had some important projects lined up at work, had to travel and so on. Looking back now I think that all these were what I thought, mere excuses and felt that like having wasted lot of opportunities.

To summarize the reasons for the question ‘Why a graduate degree’, it can be said that it was affected by various factors like the changing dynamics of the industry today, the economy, and the reducing job insurance, climbing up the corporate ladder, fortifying my achievements with education, like President Lyndon Johnson had once said “at the desk where I sit, I have learned one great truth. The answer for all our national problems the answer for the problems of the world comes to a single word. That word is ‘education.“ Well I cannot say that I have such a magnanimous view about myself but surely in due course I had learned the truth for myself that ‘education’ is the answer to at least my problems if not of the world and this time decided that I should take the dive as I had total support from my family and even from my company as they approved the tuition reimbursement wholeheartedly. These were just enough signs for me to go after the pursuit of excellence and pursue that latent dream of mine and find some answers for myself and so here I am.

The sunlight cast its warm glow across the calm water of the Pacific Ocean, close to the Hawaiian islands. I sighed with content as the water washed over me and I trailed my fingers over the surface of the water.

My task for the day was to try out some of the best scuba diving equipment in the world, and ultimately to discover the ancient shipwreck The Oceanica. I turned around in the water disrupting the stillness around me. I took the heavy kit from my supervisor and a set of complicated fitting instructions. I pulled on the unwieldy air tank and braced myself for the leaden goggles. As I fitted the snorkel to my mouth I could taste the artificial, bitter taste of purified oxygen. Although I was excited, waves of nerves flew over me. It was time to dive through the underwater depths.

Twisting in the water after a nod goodbye, I rolled over and dove straight down through the crystalline water. The surface closed over my legs and almost like a fish swimming away frantically from a predator I disappeared beneath the water without a trace; enveloped by the cold liquid and growing darkness. My arms moved in a steady, rhythmatic motion slicing away metre after metre of the little light left above me. As I gained distance from the surface, the natural light grew steadily darker and eventually I was left with the yellow glow from my headlamp.

Gazing before me I saw that I had reached the bottom of the ocean. The sea bed was grainy and rough, a TV loosing its reception. A sudden movement next to my leg made me jump. Looking round, rainbow shoals of fish were twining their way through the rocky undergrowth. Glancing towards the left I made out a large rock cluster. I swam over and reached out to pull myself into the cave.

One of the most controversial issues in today’s society is smoking. Millions do it and more than that don’t. Why would you want to smoke, with multiple hazards and risks to your own body, and even risks it poses to others around you? Is it really worth all the trouble that it causes in the long run?

Smoking is a habit that roughly twenty-five percent of Americans are addicted to (MayoClinic). It has become an aspect of life for those who do smoke, yet a supposed burden on those who do not practice this every day ritual. It has become the bases for the smoker’s social life. It can now days almost be considered a meal to most who indulge in the fiery smoke. Tell them it will kill them and they will laugh at you. Try to take that little tube that brings sanity into their lives from them and they will fight you. Why would you want to take their one true love from them?

Smokers spend at least five minutes for every cigarette on break each day. Some have high stress jobs that require you to be in a small cubical for eight plus hours in a day. Some are your construction workers, cops, and military personnel who risk their lives every day to give you “non-smokers” this luxurious life that you so enjoy. The thing is that they don’t just smoke for the hell of it; they smoke because it gives them a little break from reality. From personal experience, there is no better feeling than to sit down for that five minutes and puff on a “death stick” after having been on your feet all day building fence, retaining walls, or even just waiting tables. It gives you a sense of relief and the tobacco helps to relax you and get your blood flowing. You can really feel it work when you are worried, stressed, or just flat out tired.

There is also a whole other club of smokers. These are the ones who smoke for the joy, and passion of tobacco. I am talking about those who enjoy puffing on a pipe or savoring a cigar. They feel that sometimes that’s all it take to fuel a good conversation among friends is a pipe full of amaretto tobacco. To them it adds to the relaxing mood of sitting in their recliner solemnly listening to whatever type of music they prefer. They do not give you lung caner from second hand smoke as they share a cigar with their partners in crime at the local, weekly Smokers Club meeting. These people do not harm you when they are sitting in their own little private corner of the caf smoking with their coffee buddies. Do you have to sit right next to them? They are not forcing you to inhale their wonder drug. Yet we look down on them and talk about what the smoke has done to them. Non-smokers do not recognize that it is their choice to smoke and kill themselves and the non-smoker should respect their choice.

Write my Essay on The smokers right to smoke for me

Both of these classes of smokers just want to enjoy their hobbies in the same way a little boy does when he builds a level 1 model. Anti smokers do every thing they can to put as big a hole in smokers’ lives as they can. They are so caught up in thinking that smokers are an inconvenience to them that they don’t realize that they may be an inconvenience to the smokers.

Then people tell smokers “those are going to kill you someday.” Do you honestly think that if smokers were worried about dying from smoke related diseases that they would ever have started? By now everyone knows the risks, but people still do it. That tells me that they don’t care about the risks. Besides why should non-smokers have the right to tell smokers they should quit for the sake of their health? Should it not be left up to the smoker, how he tends to his health? Look at cops. They go out every day and risk shortening their lives to keep you safe. “Oh, but it would be inconvenient to get rid of cops, they help me.” The thing is that in both cases the people are doing something that they enjoy; the fact that they may not live as long does not matter to them.

One the other hand there is the other seventy-five percent of Americans who don’t smoke. They choose not to smoke for several reasons. Some choose not to because they have an existing health problem that prevents them from it; some don’t because they don’t want to cause any health problem that they would not otherwise get. There are a few arguments against smoking. The main one would be second hand smoking. The other one would be the smoker’s personal health.

Only about two percent of the lung cancer deaths in America are thought to result from second hand smoking (Second-hand Smoke). Second hand smoke can cause the same illnesses and diseases that first hand can. It could be just as addicting if you are around it enough. The main group affected by second hand smoking is children of smokers. Little people forced to indulge in the habit that could kill them. As a smoker, I feel it is indeed wrong to expose our children to this drug, especially the youngest ones. In children it can affect the development of their lungs. They are more vulnerable to lung infections, and it can drastically increase the complications in children with asthma (What You Can Do About Secondhand Smoke as Parents, Decision-Makers, and Building Occupants). The law says you can’t smoke until the age of eighteen, yet we are allowing these children as young as one or two years “smoke” every day. That doesn’t seem to be were the non-smokers are attacking, in the home that is. They are attacking the places were “adults” go. Places were the adult chooses to go, knowing there is smoking.

This does not constitute all the restricting laws, the ridicule smokers face, or even the banning of smoking. I do feel though, that smokers should take it on themselves to be a little more responsible and should respect the wishes of the nonsmoker, especially children. No, smokers should not give up their right to smoke in public places such as restaurants, parks, some offices (not formal or high traffic ones), or even stores. Yet, they should be courteous and not smoke in places like churches, schools, hospitals, and doctor offices. I would even go as far to say that maybe it should be banned from these places. The thing is you should not punish the responsible for what the un-responsible do.

They do everything in their power to tighten the laws against smoking. It has been banned from multiple public places restaurants, stores, and even some parks or outdoor breezeways. Most people have to go outside in designated smoking areas to smoke. No matter if it is raining, snowing, hailing, or clear people will journey outside to smoke and take a break because smoking has been banned from the workplace. Smokers in Dallas who want to have a cigarette with their meal have to venture out of the city because its been banned from the eating establishments. Even if the smoking section is completely isolated from the rest of the restaurant, it is still not good enough for the non-smoker.

The other argument has to do with the smoker’s health. Smoking claims about 40,700 thousand lives a year. It is the cause for eighty-seven percent of the lung cancer cases (Tobacco Control). Is it not stupid to do an act that you know will eventually kill you? Smoke is definitely bad for your long-term health, and will shorten your life. Smokers would refer to smoking as suicide. Not to mention what it does to your hygiene. I have observed thousands of smokers and have seen their appearances compared to others. The tar makes your teeth yellow or even brown. Your breath is usually worse. You tend to have that certain stench about you. The way you look can become quit horrible.

This was not the non-smokers choice. They did not chose they way smokers look. It was the smoker’s choice. The smoker chose to smoke, knowing that it most likely would kill them. They knew when they took their first drag that it would turn their hygiene to “shits.” This did not stop them, though. How you present yourself, and the decisions you make that could alter your life are yours and no one else’s. The choice to be a cowboy could ultimately kill you, but that choice is yours. It is your god given right to make the choice. God gave man the power of choice. Only god can take it away. Yet, non-smokers still constantly press the issue that smoking will kill you, almost to the point that the pressing can make you “insane.”

Personally I am a smoker. Personally I am against most anti-smoking campaigns. The way I see it is that most second hand smoke is not that serious in public places. You most likely are not going to get lung cancer because some guy is smoking in a restaurant; they have fans to keep the smoke away from the non-smoker. When it comes to non-smokers fighting against smoking because it kills the smoker, I say back off. It was my decision to start, knowing the risks, not the non-smokers. I also know that now I am addicted and it will take a lot to quit. The thing is that I knew this before I ever started. I feel that I am happier smoking. I am definitely not a stressed and hope to live this way for as long as I live, even if I die at 65.
