Future and growth of E-Commerce

E-commerce has been evolving at an unbelievable pace. Only about a decade ago we have heard the term of ‘e-commerce’ and now it had become so attach to every business enterprise and even individuals at home are catching fast with this idea. E-commerce is a wide scope and it offers many divisions such as e-banking, electronic data interchange (EDI) and online shopping. It is the business-to business (BB) that we’re mainly focused on. All available fact shows that e-business is developing rapidly with turnover reported to have doubled between 18 and 1.

Most companies view e-commerce or more specifically, BB as a tool to reach customers whether domestically or regionally. It involves selling, marketing or advertising products or services electronically. It’s seen as an opportunity to earn profit. As for customers or individuals, we seen more of convenience offered and also a more cost-efficient means of shopping. Overall, every parties acknowledge the need to keep in pace with this technology advancement and understand that it offers unprecedented opportunities.

Let us first look at the revolution of e-commerce as depicted from the graph below

We certainly noticed the amazing revolution of e-commerce and the amount of monies associated with this technology. There are increasing number of companies and individuals becoming involved in this new trend. With the opportunities and information it offers, the trend is certainly to continue to zoom upwards. It is undeniable that e-commerce has become very important and established in our society; in a global scale. The growth of E-Commerce in a global scale can be seen in the chart below. An annual growth of % globally is definitely implies the significance of E-Commerce in our daily activities.

The growth of E-commerce is very closely linked to the Internet and information society. This can be seen when Microsoft kicked off the e-commerce extravaganza when it releases Windows 000 in February 000. This is followed shortly by Intel with its release of 64-bit Itanium chip.

The future of e-commerce depends on the attitude of the people involved in this process and the pace in which technologies and related areas developed. E-commerce observers and futurists have come up with possible visions of e-commerce development. The visions are discussed are

1) The Netopia concept

This concept is arises from the idea of Utopia and the network. Advocates of this concept propose that global network problem will be resolved through the Net’s embrace. E-commerce will be the true mass medium, offering the best in client services. In 00, Apple Computer will release the first ‘wearable’ computer and in 005, Sony will come out with a technology that integrates a telephone, television set and a computer in one revolutionary device, this technology will be called ‘Sony ONE’. Furthermore, according to new research and technology reviewers, the Japanese companies will offer virtual reality systems for home use, approximately for the same price that we pay for a home cinema system today by the year 017.

) The manipulated mob

There will be several manipulators e-commerce and being big names globally. For instance, Microsoft Holdings will be the largest holding companies in the world, manipulating the e-commerce and offering integrated e-commerce services. This offers a new kind of prospective and views on the direction of e-commerce. After the defeat of Netscape, Bill Gates will turn to the digital world of concentrator portals.

In recent years, we saw the mushrooming of dot.com companies. The web has become crowded with competitors trying to market and advertise their products. Many people are eager to become part of the e-commerce ring and hope to cash in from it .Despite the rapid development of e-commerce, there are hindrances to its growth and there are discussions on the e-commerce’s shortcomings. Several obstacles for E-commerce growth are assessed in general and highlighted below

1. Slowdown in economies and fall in equity prices.

- There are downgraded expectations of the e-commerce because of the slowdown in economies and fall in equity prices. Many dot.com companies fail to survive this slowdown. Students graduated from Information technology schools claim that it is a harsh job market outside especially for those with IT or e-commerce qualifications. Front end sector of e-commerce such as internet retailing, web-design and marketing got attention when online mania heats up. It is undeniable that the yields from those times are lucrative. However, economy began to sputter and with the Iraq war, consumer spending has cut down and so is online business.

. Customer confidence is lacking

- Internet fraud grows and privacy problems occur. Using a credit card on the Internet is perceived to be insecure because of the fear of information leakage.

- Customer fears that the product or services bought are not alike those that they wanted. Product might differ from their expectation.

. Customer behavior.

- Most customers still prefers hand on information. For example they prefer to be in direct contact with the transaction. For instance, in purchasing a mobile phone, the customer may feel more comfortable and satisfied to try the phone at the point of purchase and knowing in detail the procedure and salesperson involved.

4. Failure stories discourage new business ventures.

- The news that increasing number of online business fails deters potential business ventures. The failure is mostly due to the high cost of business online especially the band channel and license cost.

The future prospects of E-Commerce may be held back because of these hindrances. Nevertheless, E-Commerce will still continue to be the key driver of growth and efficiency for business. This future prospect is supported by certain initiatives taken to underpin and strengthen E-Commerce as the backbone of all the various media. Such examples of initiatives taken are indicated below

1. Increasing high speed connection.

- High speed cable modems and DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) service, has been as instrumental as the PC in delivering to homes and businesses the larger hunks of data that Internet web-sites offer. Before long, streaming content will likely become a standard part of your Web experience, this will definitely attract more users or Internet surfers to online. In a survey by Forrester Research, 0% of Website owners say they offer broadband content; and a high percentage of 74% plan to do so within two years.

. Introduction of XML

- XML is a Web page coding language, similar in a sense to HTML, but much more robust and functional in supporting client-server transactions. XML has been seen by many as especially applicable for e-commerce, because it can allow online merchants to set up dynamic and flexible online stores without the need for complex database programming. Major players in the market such as Netscape and Microsoft have agreed on standard-based implementation of XML to support most upcoming versions of Internet Browser.

. Peer-to peer file sharing

- The cost of implementing high speed modem and DSL may be costly and unjustified financially for certain firms especially new and small firms. Napster has introduced a new technology called the peer-to peer file sharing for those low band-with sites. The basic idea behind Napster was to harness the power of the sea of connected computers on the Web, each with its pond of disk space. This means the sharing of a single file or servers by few client computers (or nodes).

4. Location-based marketing

- Currently E-Commerce is synonymous with PC and browser-based interaction. However, in the near future Web-enabled mobile phones and other handheld devices will become a common, if not dominant mode of accessing e-commerce applications. Commerce applications will by then evolve to track the location of mobile consumers using GPRS service. The location information will then be used to guide the consumers to nearby stores. If the consumer requests a service, say a taxi, drivers in the vicinity can be alerted.

5. New and sophisticated software to better support the dynamic E-Commerce application and environment.

There are still scopes for the progress of E-Commerce in the future. In fact, with all the new technologies being introduced to enhance business transaction, the future of E-Commerce is definitely promising.

Before we touch on the reasons and problems on financial reporting by Australian Companies, I shall give a brief introduction of International Accounting Standards and its impact on Australian Companies.

Introduction

Under the strategy announced by the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) at its meeting on 8 June 00 and publicly announced on July 00 (refer FRC Bulletin 00/4, July 00, www.frc.gov.au), the Australian Accounting Board is obligated to work towards the full implementation of International Accounting Standards in Australia in respect of financial years commencing on or after 1 January 005.

The objective for creation of a set of international accounting standards is premised very much on the assumed resultant enhancement to the efficiency of the capital markets and the consequent reduced cost of capital that would result from the existence of a set of globally acceptable accounting standards that resulted in high quality, comparable and transparent financial reporting. This is evidenced by the fact that the driving force behind the European Union’s decision to require EU listed companies to prepare their consolidated accounts in accordance with IASB standards from 1 January 005 is desire of the EU to create a single capital market.

The fundamental to the success of the FRC 005 strategy therefore is the ability of the IASB to have a set of high quality accounting standards in place sufficiently early so that companies in Australia are well placed to ensure their appropriate adoption on a timely basis.

Reasons for Australian Companies to adopt IAS

Reductions in the cost of capital through the resolution of uncertainty;

Relating to the interpretation and implementation of national standards;

Administrative benefits arising from the ease of filing in multiple jurisdictions and the resultant simplicity in the development of common accounting systems in place of adjusting, reconciling and explaining different bases applied in different countries;

Enhanced comparability and transparency of financial reporting requirements and credibility of the reported information;

Facilitation of cross-border investment and fund raising and the removal of an impediment to a more efficient allocation of resources;

Lower investment risk because it reduces an element of risk associated with understanding foreign financial reporting for investors and lenders.

Listed EU Companies will comply with IAS, this is the main driving force for Australian companies to move towards IAS.

Australian Investors gain as IAS are superior quality and give rise to high quality financial reports.

High cost of reconciling accounts between international regimes for Australian companies before the introduction of IAS.

Australia’s small capital market means we need to conform to attract international capital.

Reasons for Australian Users adopting IAS

From the standpoint of the users of financial statements (e.g. investors, banks or owner) one can see the following advantages. Investors, banks or owners are interested in obtaining information, which enables them to make buy/sell/hold investment decisions. We argue, that similar financial statements would make it possible for users of financial statements to make useful comparisons between countries and companies. This can be explained with the circumstances that similar transactions are accounted for and reported in the same manner everywhere in the world. With other words, similar Accounting Standards lead to a better comparability between companies. It would enable investors, banks or financial analysts to make better decisions. Therefore, greater comparability results in better understanding, lower risks and more efficient selections of investments. Choi et al. argue that “financial statement users have difficulty interpreting information produced under non-domestic Accounting Systems. They claim that harmonization will make it more likely that users will interpret the information correctly, and thus make better decisions based on that information” (Choi et al., 00).

For the society at large it can be said that harmonized Accounting Standards are important, because they lead to a well-developed and good functioning capital market. That is important in our view, because companies and others can raise money for investments there. This again is a pre-condition for a good economy and development. (Epstein and Mirza, 001)

The main advantage for Australian companies to use financial data would be the better comparability of financial data. In contrary Pellens asks, whether harmonized Accounting Standards are actually necessary for participants of the capital market. He argues that for understanding such rules, detailed knowledge of those is necessary. Maybe Pellens is right that not all analysts will understand the rules of IAS. Therefore, we think it is important for the IASB to further work for an understanding of their standards. He argues further that national comparisons with competitors and branch information are in first line necessary, for analysts to make comparisons. He is of the opinion that only in second line international comparisons with foreign companies are made, which would mean that international Accounting Standards are not needed. (Pellens, 001) We consider his last argument only to be true for small enterprises. International comparisons are in our view of high importance for the evaluation of the performance of global acting companies.

Another statement, made by Goeltz, is that global capital markets would even have developed without international Accounting Standards. (Goeltz in Choi et al., 00) We agree with Goeltz on that aspect. On the other hand it is obvious that the need for reconciliation or a full preparation of financial statements according to foreign Accounting Standards are barriers to the free competition of capital.

Problems cause in adopting IAS for financial reporting by Australian Companies.

(A) The adoption of some IASC standards on issues where there is no equivalent Australian standard.

The program involves the introduction of standards where there are no equivalent Australian standards, for example, borrowing costs, accounting for superannuation liabilities, provisions and contingencies and intangible assets.

However, concerns have been expressed by the Business Community (Group 100) and others about some outcomes of the program for example, the failure in ED 84 Acquisition of Assets to propose harmonisation in respect of pooling of interests. The Group of 100 has indicated to the Board that the process of harmonisation will involve a balancing of some benefits (such as harmonisation with some requirements that are not presently permitted in Australia, for example, pooling of interests) and some costs (such as removal of some current practices).

(B) A challenging program of revision and harmonisation with new developments

An important feature of the program is the renovation and refurbishment of the fabric of Australian standards. Many standards, which were developed several years ago, are in need of care, maintenance and updating, for example, profit and loss statements, inventories, segment reporting, and extractive industries. This has not occurred because of a lack of resources and new projects being given a higher priority.

The updating of old standards and the filling of gaps in the suite of standards will benefit the preparers and in particular, the users of financial reports.

The harmonisation program and the cooperation between standard-setters, for example, the G4+1, is also resulting in a convergence in the approach to issues, which are being dealt with at approximately the same time. Projects on provisions and contingencies, impairment of assets, performance reporting and the recognition and measurement of financial instruments have been initiated during this period.

It is anticipated that an enhanced financial reporting framework resulting from the program will provide more relevant and reliable information for decision making which will result in improvements in the efficiency of capital markets and in corporate governance and accountability.

(C) Effect on domestic standards

Part of the price of globalizations is that the international standard-setter may not give Australian needs and circumstances the same emphasis, as would a national standard-setter. As such, in the absence of a strong national standard-setter with a clear brief on the quality of financial reporting and active participation in the development of international standards, there may be some erosion of quality in relation to domestic standards. However, the compensations for this are the benefits to the economy and international competitiveness of a move to international harmonisation, which is considered to be unavoidable in a period of globalization of commerce, technological and financial innovation.

We consider the following points as problems faced by the Australian companies

• Close relationship of IASB to philosophies of the Anglo-American Model

• Convergence means only to harmonize IAS and U.S.-GAAP

• Developing countries are neglected.

The international harmonization process of Accounting Standards started somewhere in the 160s’ and recent developments show that it is still going on. For us it seems interesting to reflect on this process and to ask about the characteristics (driving forces, actors, stages) of it.

(D) Differences in International Accounting Standards

Australia’s harmonisation of financial reporting requirements with the wider global community would confront a number of impediments because of inconsistencies between IASs, US GAAP and EU Directives. IASC-consistent reporting is unlikely to enhance Australia’s link to the world community. This could lead to potential negative consequences in both financial and product markets. Nevertheless, Hegarty (17) argued that purely national regimes are not conducive to the internationalization of markets, since differences in approach give rise to barriers to trade and investment. But it is problematic whether the choice of IASC standards is a step forward.

Moves to link Australian accounting standards to those of the IASC may be built on shaky ground, in that there is little evidence to suggest that this necessarily will improve international product and financial relations for companies reporting under Australian requirements. Given the magnitude of the potential downsides relating to the integrity and the comparability of financial reports and reporting in general, Australian professional bodies and the law need to consider their options carefully.

(E) Legal system

The Accounting world can be divided into “those countries which have a ‘legalistic’

orientation toward accounting and those with a ‘nonlegalistic’ orientation” (Nobes et al.,

178). The non-legalistic approach can be found in countries, which use common law. In common law countries, like Australia, Accounting does not depend upon law. Accountants (professional organizations) arrange accounting rules. Hence, it is the private sector, which determines Accounting and not the law (Choi et al., 00). The task of the legal system is to give an answer to a specific case rather than to formulate general rules for the future (Choi et al., 00).

The legalistic approach can be found in countries, which use the so-called code (or codified) law. In contrary to the common law, the codified law system needs to develop rules in detail for the Accounting and financial reporting (Nobes, 14). This means “Accounting rules are incorporated into national law and tend to be highly prescriptive and procedural” (Choi et al., 004). In these countries the role of law is to describe behaviour, which is considered to be acceptable in the society (Choi et al., 00).

(F) Provider of finance

The three main sources for external capital are shareholders, banks and government (Hill,

1). It varies from country to country, which of these three provides most of the financial capital to companies. In countries like Germany and Italy banks provide companies with capital. In countries like Australia, shareholders provide companies with capital. The government is the provider of capital in countries like France and Sweden. (Hill, 1) This diversity of capital providers means that Accounting Practices differ in order to satisfy needs of capital providers. In the case of shareholder ownership, (e.g. in the Australia), information disclosure will be more important than in countries, where capital is raised from banks or governments. This is explained by the fact that in the latter countries information will be transmitted more directly. (Radebaugh and Gray, 17)

It is impossible for Australian companies to inform each shareholder with its specific information needs, because they are a big and unorganized group. Therefore financial statements in the US and UK are “oriented toward providing individual investors with the information they need to make decisions about purchasing or selling corporate stocks and bonds” (Hill, 15). The Accounting Practices in countries with banks as main capital providers have an interest to protect bank’s investment. This led to more conservative methods, which are characterized by overvaluation of liabilities and underestimation of assets (Hill, 1). In countries where capital is provided by the government, Accounting Practices are oriented towards needs of governmental planners (Hill, 1).

(G) High Initial Costs

Difference in IAS and Australian Accounting Standard may result in extra cost involved that a change in the method of accounting practice. Initial cost will include re-training the accounting profession and the users of financial reports. Ongoing costs will stem largely form the need to identify, and even update for each reporting period, the tax base of assets and liabilities. Australian companies may face costs in installing systems that record the information in a way that enables the calculations to be readily performed.

Current Concerns By Australian Companies

A number of Australian companies and participants in the process have recently expressed concerns about the approach to harmonisation and the timing of the process. Overall, Australian companies support the principle of harmonisation but are concerned about

§ The approach on particular issues, for example, accounting for intangible assets;

§ The effect of adopting a new accounting requirement in respect of transactions and arrangements which were structured and undertaken under previous arrangements;

§ The perceived damage to competitive advantage resulting from the adoption of standards which are more restrictive than those applying to competitors;

§ The intensity of the international harmonisation program and the resultant lack of time to adequately review the proposed changes, their implications for current practice and to prepare submissions on exposure drafts etc; and

§ The process by which IASC standards are to achieve acceptance in international capital markets.

§ Australia’s accounting conceptual framework is more detailed than IAS

§ Adoption will dilute some of Australia’s current accounting standards.

§ Australia’s superior accounting standards represent a competitive advantage in a corporate world full of uncertainty at present.

§ Australia represents just 1% of the global equity capital market.

§ Adoption will result in the loss of Australia’s competitive advantage and a higher cost of capital for Australian companies.

Conclusion

Harmonisation and convergence of accounting standards are no longer just buzzwords and nice to have, they are very fast approaching reality. Although Australian standard-setters have been harmonizing the countrys accounting standards with IAS for a number of years, the move to full compliance with IAS still came as a great surprise to both the accounting fraternity and the corporate world, not only because of the short time frame for full compliance but also because of the wide ambit of its application.

While harmonisation has brought about many similarities between Australian standards and IAS, some substantial differences and gaps between the two sets of standards do exist. It is particularly the existence of these gaps in the Australian suite of standards that will have far-reaching impacts on the future financial reporting of Australian companies. They also present a great challenge for Australian companies in getting themselves ready for the new reporting regime.

Recommendations

To allow Australian companies easily adopt the International Accounting Standard,

I would like to make the below recommendations

First, IAS should consider the distinctive features on Australian market especially where the market economy is evolving. So that Australian companies can easily adopt IAS.

Second, IAS should allow alternative treatment in special case. For example, IAS should provide for another measurement basis, such as historical cost, when fair value is unable to be determined reliably.

Third, based on the current presentation of IAS, I suggest that IASB expand explanatory notes, implementation guidance and background information of each standard It will reduce the difficulties faced by standard setters and Australian companies while adopting IAS.

Fourth, I recommend that IASB publish IAS training materials to facilitate the education of the accounting profession and to improve their understanding and implementation of the standards.

Influenced by the theories of the pioneer of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, the images found in surrealist works are as confusing and startling as those of dreams. Surrealist works can have a realistic, though irrational style, precisely describing dreamlike fantasies, as in the works of Ren Magritte, Salvador Dalí, Yves Tanguy, and Alfred Pellan. Something all Surrealists have in common is a spontaneous technique, modeled upon the psychotherapeutic procedure of free association as a means to eliminate conscious control in order to express the workings of the unconscious mind.

Salvador Dali was a primary member of that surrealist movement and one of the most publicized to date. Despite all that was written by and about him, Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali remained a mystery as a man and as an artist. A blend of reality and fantasy characterized both his personal life and his artwork. Many of Dalís paintings were influenced and inspired by the landscapes of his youth. Dalí continued to paint details of the landscape of Catalonia (his birthplace) into his works, as evidenced by such works as The Persistence of Memory, completed in 11. The meanings of Dali’s paintings have been the subject of much debate between surrealist scholars over the years. Three Separate Melting Watch images even out the foreground of the work. The melting watches shown in the persistence of memory are one symbol that is commonly associated with Salvador Dalís Surrealism. They are literally meant to show the irrelevance of time however upon seeking someone else’s opinion one might yield a different answer Take as an example this excerpt from a review in the Sydney Morning Herald /10/1 by Age art critic Robert Nelson It must be the year of the surrealist Phoenix...I hope it does not sow a generation of unconscious painters, who also attempt to claim meaning in a work which they blatantly decree they have no control over… meaning in such work no, chaos yes. This is quite obviously show in such work as the persistence of memory by Dali where meaning and interpretation are vapid from his work excusing the occasional hollow juxtapositions.” Obviously not a critic with a fondness for the genre or Dali himself however ironic it may be there are some comical accuracies in his words as Dali is most definable as a surrealist phoenix (though not in the sense meant by this critic) Rather In the Dalínian universe, we have come to understand that life is continually disintegrating and then forming anew which has come to be one of the defining features of Dali’s work, the work is defiantly chaotic and rightly so I challenge to a find a surrealist work which dose not denote such an element. . There also have been a number of works by Dali where meaning had been so obvious it is visible to even the uneducated. In this classic image, (Don Quixote an infinite landscape) we see the knight Don Quixote, perched on his valiant steed, doing battle with the giant Caraculiambro. He seeks to vanquish the giant and order him to kneel in submission to his beloved Lady Dulcinea. Note the special design in the lower right corner wherein his name and his wife Galas are intertwined under a crown as a tribute to Don Quixote and his love for the Lady Dulcinea, this piece seeks to express meaning and more obviously a story a piece obviously overlooked by such critics as Mr nelson.. Dali himself described the theoretical basis of his paintings as paranoiac-critical the creation of visionary reality from elements of “visions, dreams, memories and psychological or pathological distortions through the use of familiar objects such as watches, insects and telephones and the primary images of blood and decay.” (Wheeler 1) Dalis images in the persistence of memory gradually transform into a visual nightmare such as the melting watches or metamorphic self-portrait included in the piece. In the 141 Dali image “invisible face” one envisions the ruined countenance of a skeletal face; the large drawn mouth serving as a gateway to the plains and vast terrain of the future that lies ahead. The growing cypress tree represents the life of man. Within the worn down facade of the past are other hidden invisible faces, perhaps holding the memories of what the grand facade once was. It is reminiscent of an age gone by, Dalí’s symbolic colors representing a range of emotions however it is true that what is seen by one person may not be visible to another as surrealism invokes a highly individual interpretation. Each work by dali makes use of his different techniques and styles which as a result lead to a variety of different meanings in each.

Paper #---Analytical Paper (Portfolio Draft)

Women Portrayed In Music Videos

The television entertainment industry has grown dramatically in the past decade especially the music video industry. In the past, there have been music videos for select songs, but now there are complete channels dedicated solely to showing music videos. With many young female entertainers currently at the top of the charts, many of the music video producers have taken the opportunity to depict women in a negative and inferior light. Their bodies have been depicted on the screen as the ideal build even though most are quite skinny compared to the “average” female their age. This has led to a whole host of gender prejudices, confusions regarding sexuality, dissatisfaction with the body, and eating disorders especially among teenage girls.

Current music videos depict women as objects by focusing on some individual parts of the body instead of the whole. In Christina Aguilera’s new video, for example, the cameras often show a few frames of solely her stomach. By “taking apart” the girls’ bodies, viewers get the impression that the entertainers are like robots with replaceable parts. This encourages viewers to see the females as objects rather than people. I have listened to guys across the hall watch music videos and say what body parts they want to take from different women and reassemble to make the perfect woman.

Their conversation while watching MTV one night went like this “Well if you take Christina’s stomach, Britney’s boobs, and Maria’s @$$ -- no wait, she’s getting heavier Christina’s @$$, man now there’s hot for you.” The girls in the room (who were all between the ages of eighteen and twenty) just laughed and shook their heads. They did not agree, but they also did not stand up and make a big deal of it. They just shook it off as “guys will be guys.” Later in the semester, I was in the same room with basically the same group of people watching MTV. The guys made comments as usual about the female entertainers. Then 8 Degrees came on. Interestingly enough, the girls quietly watched as they had when the females were performing while the guys encouraged them to drool over the entertainers in a mocking fashion. “Becca, look at those abs! [girly voice] Nick is, like, so hot. You want him don’t you? Admit it. You need some loving. You haven’t had a guy in a while.” They were obviously joking around, but the undertone that girls need men for physical/sexual attention was still very prevalent. The girls (myself included) just continued to laugh it off, though, rather than deal with the ridicule of being “all defensive” or just plain “obnoxious” about it. The male music videos depict girls hanging off them to get even one piece of attention or just to serve the males.

Although women feel that music videos degrade their gender, they watch them anyway because they like the songs or just want to watch music videos. Males, however, often blatantly refuse to watch “boy bands” such as the Backstreet Boys and 8 Degrees and call them “sissies” “pretty boys” and “pansies”. When they do see the male entertainers, the males often have degrading comments about the bands such as “They have no talent. What a bunch of fags.” Because many males strongly prefer to see females on the screen, and most females will watch either gender, the television stations show many more women’s music videos than men’s to keep their ratings at a maximum. Men will watch music videos solely to admire the girls’ bodies while women watch to see the dancing and hear the music. Men take offense to being shown as sex symbols while women tolerate it, and many do not even think twice about it. Some of this might be the result of videos and society making them feel like they have no right to protest. Instead they starve themselves to make their bodies look like the “sexy” girls on television.

In a recent Seventeen Magazine article there was an article describing the workout regiment followed by Christina Aguilera, Britney Speares for abs and thighs, and Maria Carey for full body toning. It also had diet tips such as eating vegetables, fruits, salads with no dressing, and no fat snacks. These foods are fine as long as they are supplements, but the article made it sound as though these foods are all that can be eaten in order to lose weight and look like Christina, Britney, or Maria. Seventeen’s target readers are high school girls who. Girls this age tend to be more self-conscious of their bodies than any other age group male or female. The article made the super-slimness of the featured entertainers seem normal and even portrayed them as the templates for how a girl’s body should look.

In women’s music videos, there is a tremendous emphasis on the body and staying “in shape” according to the entertainment industry’s definition. By representing super-skinny girls as desirable, networks create an artificial standard of the ideal, healthy body. Females singers/entertainers spend more time working out than most females have time to. They have luxuries such as personal trainers and to dieticians help them attain their % body fat slimness. Entertainers have a lot of “down time” between performances when many choose to work out to combat boredom. Also, many stars have surgeries to turn their bodies into the perfect dimensions. These surgeries include breast implants, liposuction, collagen injections, and face lifts. They also have the best make up artists to correct any impurities in their face and the skin over their body. Sadly, girls often compare their physical beauty to those on television and try to imitate the stars they see, however unhealthy that may be. Many people blame the rising rate of eating disorders among teens on this. Girls feel they have to look like the females on TV so they resort to bulimia and anorexic behaviors to attain the rock hard, bony bodies they see on television.

Unfortunately, the female entertainers are often locked into doing whatever the producers want for their music videos after signing a contract so even if they do not like being rendered as an object of flesh for men to gawk at, they have no choice. One interview on MTV featured Gwen Steffani, the lead singer of the band No Doubt, as she discussed her experience with this situation. She fought to be able to express herself and do some of her own choreography, but ended up having to do and wear whatever the producers wanted until her contract was over. Other female entertainers do not seem to mind at all and even like the attention. Britney Speares was on television within the past month promoting one of her shows with the comment “It’s all about being women and celebrating our bodies and sexuality. It’s about standing up for who we are.” Most people would consider Britney more of a girl than a woman. She is known for being a sex symbol and is one of the last people many would consider an authority on being a woman.

In any case, females are often projected as craving male attention. They are shown as depressed and lonely until a man suddenly appears out of the blue and gives their lives meaning. Females are shown as objects for men to use solely for sex. The video for “Sour Girl” by Stone Temple Pilots is an example. At the end of the video the girl dies and the man just walks away (with two stuffed bunnies mind you). It seems as though the metaphor is that the artificial bunnies can replace the company of the girl as if she was only a material object too. If the guy had died, the next frame would have been the girl lonely and lost or weeping over his body rather than just moving on. Also in this video, the guy caresses her and even manipulates her hands and body to whatever position he wanted while she stands there just looking pretty expressing the sad talent of an inflatable Barbie doll.

Along these lines, women are depicted as brainless. In the videos, they fall helplessly for whichever man pays attention to them first or most. They move, and often even look, like robots performing the same moves as all the others and wearing the darker silvery makeup hues like Britney Speares’s latest song, Lucky. Some videos show them being used and cheated on by their significant others and do not even portray this behavior in a negative light. They are represented as sex deprived figures who need the attention of a man to be complete and happy. These actresses are often in the background of many videos where the lead singers are male. The women just lounge in chairs or dance in skimpy, revealing clothing.

Females are also shown wearing much less clothing than the typical male entertainer. Women dance around in outfits that are either super tight, leather, a combination, or that resemble bras and underwear more than normal clothing. On the other hand, men wear jeans, khakis, occasional leather pants, tee shirts, sweaters, or custom created outfits. While women are bare midriffed with about the same amount of fabric in their total outfit as men have in their boxers alone, men are rarely shown with their shirts off and even then they do not have to be super athletic, muscular, or physically attractive in any aspect. Most men whose bodies we see look like they have never worked out in their lives and are either super skinny or just have no muscle. Blink 18 illustrates this point perfectly. They even show midgets who look like the singers running around in few or no clothes in a humorous light. They are not tanned and toned like the females.

The music video industry represents females in a disrespectful and unfair manner. They show them half naked and emphasize slim, often unhealthy bodies on women while men can get away with any body type or hide it under baggy, long-sleeved clothes. Women are depicted as objects which can be replaced and whose sole purpose is to please men. They are shown as brainless, but entertaining and therefore having a purpose. One cause may be that most music video directors are male; however each and every woman who is unopinionated on the matter or just passively accepts the women’s music videos contributes to the continuation of this kind of gender prejudice. Sadly, the majority of women fall into this group causing the discrimination and flesh fest to continue to worsen. It will continue to deteriorate since there is no opposition even in this society that takes great pride in having equal rights but is blatantly ignorant with regard to the music video industry.

So I am sitting here at work both bored off my ass and bored out of my mind. So I begin thinking. Amazing isn’t it!@ I remembered back to elementary school and when my teacher was showing us how to make the number 8. She was demonstrating the proper, well, figure 8 technique. Then she set us hard at work scribbling out our own 8’s on a sheet of paper. When you thought you had the best looking 8, you were supposed to bring it to her desk.

So there I was banging out these great looking 8’s. I stand up and swagger over coolly to her desk. I see other kids walk away with smiles on their faces and I am prepared for the big thumbs up for my own work. She looks my paper over then looks at me. Her face hardens and she accuses me of making small o’s and stacking them on top of one another. She accused me of …… cheating.

How dare she!@. That effen bitch. No, that effen c0ck whore. With but a few words it felt like she doubled her fist and pounded my tiny feelings into the ground. What did I ever do to earn so little of her trust? I pleaded with her. I told her those were my 8’s and I didn’t fake them. But with a wave of her cruel cold hand she dismissed me back to my seat.

I sulked back to my desk and there I sat in quiet pain. Slowly I firmed up my resolve and again I went to work on my 8’s. Again they flew out of my pencil almost godly in stature. Was it my fault I was gifted with the ability to make a perfect 8? I was like Spiderman, I had great power. Unlike him though, my power wasn’t a super one. My power began and ended with the number 8.

Once more I walk the path to her desk and showed her my work. She reviewed my offering and this time gives me a ‘good job’. However before I left, she gave me ‘the’ look. The same look she gave me before. The look of disapproval. I knew she still thought I was stacking o’s. My spirits, which raised some with her praise, sunk back to the floor.

/sigh

You know, I wish I could say F her and that scar she put on my little psyche, but I can’t. She gave me baggage I can’t check at the gate. I must lug this sh!t around as carrier on throughout the flights of my life. It’s funny, events come and go, but you never know which ones are going to be the keepers.

Aalf

Racist Language

Racism is a very big part of society today. It is a part of everyday life in places ranging from big cities to small towns. Racist language is both a result and a culprit of this and is used very often. Some of these racists words are used in negative and positive ways and the effects on society have a wide range.

Have you ever cracked a joke about someone of a different race, religion, or culture than you? Have you ever stood around and laughed when someone was making fun of one of these people without stopping them? If so, then you have participated in the use of racist language. Racist language is usually not looked at as being a very serious problem, especially when people say they are just telling jokes, but most people do not understand the harm that it can truly cause. While going to school and living on this widely diversified campus, I have noticed a lot of racist language. I have overheard racist language ranging from joking between friends to private talk about the hatred of another race.

For those who believe a joke is harmless then think about this. You are sitting around with a group of your friends, and one of your friends cracks a joke about black people, and then another friend replies with another degrading joke. Then everybody has a good laugh and no harm is done because you are just laughing along and maybe you say something like, “Oh! That was horrible” but you still laugh because you know that you really are not racist. Now put yourself in the same situation, but this time you do not notice that one of your black friends walks up and is standing right behind you and your friends. Since you did not notice him walk over, you let your friends go on with their jokes. Now you may not have actually said anything in the conversation but what is your friend going to think of you after listening to your friends and you laugh. Your black friend may not know you as a racist but since you did not stop your friends from joking about blacks you are just as guilty as them. So just a simple conversation such as this can affect the way people look at you.

Do my essay on Racist Language CHEAP !

Racist language has to do with a lot more than just jokes and friends though. To me there are specific words that define racism in our society. There is one word in particular that I have a huge problem with, this is the word “nigger”. When the average person such as I hear this word, I think of it as a racial slur used to downgrade black people. The reason for this is because any time I have seen this word used in movies or heard it in real life it has always been used in a hateful way. Like in the old western movies that I grew up with, they would use this word in a very negative way. Also in the movies today the use of this word has increased because of the topics of some movies.

However, this word can be used to mean other things as well. Since I have attended school up here I have met and become friends with several black people, while spending time with my new acquaintances in my room. I have heard them call each other “nigger” on a regular basis. I have also heard this throughout campus. I am a student trainer and work with the football team where the African American guys call each other “niggers” all he time, in all different types of conversations. Now as far as I knew that was an offensive word but my new friends did not seem to think so. I could not understand why they all accepted this word, so I asked one of my African American friends about it. She said that there are two different ways to say the word. One is “nigger” which is very offensive when used in an aggressive way. The other is “nigga” which is not harmful or threatening when said in a friendly way. It is kind of like saying “What’s up dude”, if it is said by a friend. She said that even if white guys said what’s up “nigga” she said that a guy if he was your friend would not be upset as long as he knew it was not said in a non threatening way. This sounded very strange to me, in that there were specific rules on how to say the word. Personally, I do not at all feel comfortable with this word in any way that it is used, but I do find it very interesting how changing a word so very little can change the meaning so drastically. However, I do understand that the way you deliver the word has a big part in the meaning as well. Nonetheless, I do believe that using the word in public is not acceptable no matter how you mean it. The fact is that the majority of people believe the use of the word “nigger” to be a racist comment. Surely people can use an alternative for identifying their friends since this word can be very offensive to some if they do not understand the contents that are using it in. Even if most black people are comfortable calling each other this it may be offensive to some other people who are listening. It is not courteous to say any kind of vulgar language in public. The point is that any use of the word nigger in public will most likely cause more harm than good.

Racist language is a vulgar way for people to try to express them. Besides spreading hatred, it causes people being around it to be uncomfortable. No matter what way this language is used, friendly or not, with different groups or races, it is not good to use in private, much less when people are around because it is so defending towards people not liking this sort of language.

Raisin In The Sun

In the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, the character Mama, expresses her feelings of pushing or extracting a new side for a woman. Her role explains that woman can be independent. Through Mama’s behavior in this play she demonstrates that women can support and guide a family. Mama, who is in charge of the family, takes control of their well being.

Mama expresses and portrays an image of pro-feminism. Mama’s experience in the play A Raisin in the Sun illustrates the expressions, the emotions, and the feeling with which Mama and women had to cope with during this time. She was able to show us through her passionate dreams, her control, and her strong willed attitude. Mama is a powerful, strong witted person. She has a lot of control in this play and dominates as a woman character. You would think that this is supposed to be a male’s position in life.

In this play she is illustrated as taking over for the head of the family and controls the lives of everyone in her house. Rules are followed to Mama’s extent. She controls what is said and done in her house. This shows that women could take the duties of a man and that women can survive on their own. Mama’s behavior through the plays shows that women could play the role of being a man. She conducts the house to her satisfaction. When Beneatha says, “There simply is no blasted Godthere is only man and it is he who makes miracles!” Mama reacts by slapping her across the face to show her that this is her house and that she is in control. Not only did Mama control her family’s actions in her house, but she also controlled any guests’ actions in her household. Mama was the controller of the house and the whole neighborhood knew about it.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on A Clack of Tiny Sparks by Cooper

As a woman, Mama’s aspirations to get a house was uncommon in those days, but Mama always dreamed of moving out of there small apartment and into a nice house in a safer neighborhood with a small garden. She describes her dream house like it is the most spectacular thing in the world. She is extremely happy for herself, but happier for her family. However, Mama’s goals are more complicated then just wanting a house. With this house she feels that the family now has hope and can accomplish their dreams.

On the other hand, without this house Mama predicts that the family will continue with very little hope and will not have much to look forward to. “The sole natural light the family may enjoy in the course of a day is only that which fights its way through this little window”. The lack of light in the play is the symbol of the absence of hope within the family member’s hearts. With not hope there is not much of anything to strive for.

Mama shows her “womanism” by using her control and sharing her dreams with her family. During this time period women did not think, or act for themselves on their own. They were not respected nor did they have their own attitudes. Men were the controller of them and their lives. Mama regulated this and exhibited that women could live for themselves as well as think for themselves. Even though everything fell apart towards the end of the book, Mama still had a positive attitude. No matter how bad things got she still was willing and motivated. She wanted to be happy and filled with hope. Mama states, “When it gets like that in lifeyou just got to do something different, push on out and do something bigger.”

Her attitude is positive and she did what she could to try to make the rest of the family feel the same way. Her good attitude is what made the family happy and filled with hope. With the exception of the Younger’s household most women in this period had no self-respect and were controlled by their husbands.

In A Raisin in the Sun, Mama lightens the fact that woman can exist and can do positive things in the world on there own. Mama’s role showed that women could live on their own without the guidance of men. Mama’s strong, bold attitude overcame the aspirations of the struggle between men and women. Mama’s dreams and her attitude designed a new path for woman to walk on.

The relationship between Hartley and Mitsy is a complex one. This may

be due to the many faces of both parties. In the novel, Hartley starts off

carefree, but progressively becomes dismal (through most of the book),

loving, and hate-filled as the setting of the book changed (possibly the

hate should be an exception, as these two occasions were spur of the

moment). He even showed an act of cowardice when, instead of

rescuing Jamie instantly, he lingered, wondering if his hate for Jamie

should be good enough cause to let him die.

Mitsy resembled a two-faced being during many parts of the book, an

example being when Hartley described her in the internment camp, I

began to recognise two Mitsys one the agitator and one the lover. (page

10). She shows many emotions hate, love, grievance, mischief and

understanding. She could be classified as a different type of person from

just this mix of emotions.

The fact that their feelings never really match throughout this whole

book may be a cause for their weak relationship. Another possibility

could be in the turning points in the book. The first is where Mitsy

misinterprets Hartleys head signal, and assumes a hurt state. The

consequence was that she and Hartley were barely in any contact with

each other.

The turning point here illustrates the fact that they cannot read each

other. This is definitely not a quality of any relationship.

The other real turning point is where the Sennosukes are brought into

the Penroses home. Hartley and Mitsy become quickly intimate, but it

breaks off as the wireless brings in news of the war, particularly about

the progress of the Japanese. When the letter is received, Hartley, out of

sheer despair, verbally attacks Mitsy, saying You bitch!. Although he

didnt fully mean it, the damage was done, and Mitsy started to see Jamie

socially.

From what we see with the last two turning points, it seems that

Hartley is doing the real damage to their relationship. This may also

contribute to the fact that their relationship is quite a weak one.

Of course, the introduction of Jamie Kilian may have been a great

impediment in their relationship, as he continuously pursued Mitsy. This

eventually brought out Hartleys paranoia and obsession with Mitsy, as

he began first following Jamie, and then Mitsy during the nights.

Jamies attraction to Mitsy became apparent at Hartleys party aboard the

Ida Penrose, when Jamie says What a corker!, in reference to Mitsy.

This ignited a new rivalry between the newly formed friends, which is

what Hartley disliked about Jamie most.

All these things (the feelings mismatch, the particular feelings at the

aforementioned turning points, the introduction of Jamie Kilian into the

crew) could contribute to the weakness (or the extinct state) of their

relationship.

Fifth chord is also called dominant because it tends to lead in root, also dimnished chord leads strongly to root because it is seventh and tries to accend to complete the harmony, but dimnished chord has no proper fifth so it is a little tricky chord to use well (thats why it is very rare in popular music). ALSO this works up side down! Let me explain, when we play root and go to fifth and back to root we could go back to the root we came from or forward to the root one octave higher, 4th up is same as 5th down, 7th up is same as nd down (make sure you understand this). Also minor rd and major 6th makes some harmony with root but you cant end chord progression to major rd or minor 6th, it wont sound complete! (Ok we can make it more complete if we use some other than basic chords...).

How to apply this in practise? Avoid using major 4th (or minor 6th)interval between chords in progression, with one expection the root note!!! You can basically go to any note from the root because it makes harmony with every other note in the scale, scales are in harmony with the root! THATS WHAT MAKES ROOT NOTE SO SPECIAL!!!

Other Three Note Chords

Now you know all I know about basic chords and making chord progression, it is time to move on.

Suspended chords (1--5 and 1-4-5) have given me a lot of more options on making chord progressions. How I realised how they can be used was when I were learning the Stairway To Heaven and that bridge part had that calssic Dsus, D, Dsus4. So if you have a chord in your song but you think it requires some ascending sound (without cahnging the root) use sus4 and in case of descending use sus. Also you can use sus4 instead of chords 4th chord and sus instead of 5th chord to make some variety in your playing. Try out this song by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Free Fallin progression is |D-G-|GDA-| but when playing Dsus4 instead of G and Dsus instead of A and you get it almost same but it sounds much more Dish (I made a word )...

Ok sus chords are for moving rd of the chord, what if we move 5th? Well get Dadd11(no5) and D(add)7(no5) and I suggest you to try out those too (1--4) (1--6)... also try powerchords like 6th(sounds like minor rd) and 4th(sounds like 5th), also try playing 5th and then 6th and 5th again (dont change the root)... and 4th, rd, 4th (root, nd, root)...

But what if I want to change the root of the chord and make the chord remain same? Then we are talking about Slash chords, for example C/B would have notes B-E-G-C-E, but we were talking about three note chords so lets choose some note which belongs to C chord, we have two options C/G and C/E and now we are talking about chord invertions, I am not sure but I think the first inversion is C/C, second inversion is C/E (rd of the chord) and third inversion is C/G... I havent introduced myself with inversions...

Ok actually C/E is called first inversion and C/G is second inversion...

Ill continue with 4 and more note chords later and tell what they are good for...

The Sagging Hanger

Advertising can have very powerful effects on people. The ad that I chose to write about is selling Special K cereal. Our society as a whole has become an overweight society so food companies are jumping on the bandwagon to come up with the lowest fat food, or the lowest carbohydrate product. They want to be part of the solution not part of the problem. This particular ad is trying to persuade us to eat less so we can take inches off of our waistline in three weeks. In secret this ad is really trying to sell a thinner waistline. These days our society is so obsessed with weight loss, and appearance, that advertisers can use a simple coat hanger to sell a box of cereal.

For those people who are overweight or just need to loose a few, ads like these really grab your attention. This particular ad is geared toward women who would love to achieve the impossible hour glass figure. Society has drilled into our heads to be thin or be judged by other people for being overweight. To me this ad is really selling “eat very little” not eat healthier. The first way that they grab your attention is by the dark bold red background. Then they use two oversized hangers, the top one happens to be bigger than the second one, sagging in the middle from the weight of larger pants. Inside of the drooping hanger the text reads “Replace two meals a day with a Special K cereal meal.” The second coat hanger, placed more in the center of the page, is virtually perfect. The hanger doesn’t sag in the middle because the pants that were hanging on it weren’t as heavy from extra material. Inside of the straight hanger the text reads “You could lose up to one pant size in three weeks.” Lastly, at the very bottom of the ad two different flavors of Special K cereal sit. The picture on the box has a women’s’ waistline with a tape measure around it in place of a belt as if to show us how many inches thinner she is now from having eaten Special K cereal. Underneath the cereal box it reads Help Yourself.

For some people who think or know that they need to lose a few pounds ads like this one really pull at their heartstrings. Society has drummed up this image on how we should look; perfect skin, perfect breasts, perfect waist, perfect everything. Not an ounce of fat shows anywhere on the body. Everywhere we turn we see this, whether it be on billboards, magazine ads or TV we are surrounded by perfectly beautiful women. So now a days most people find themselves embarrassed about being overweight and are willing to do whatever it takes or try whatever it takes to shed a few pounds, to achieve that perfect figure. They have probably spent most of their lives being judged by other people in our society about how they look. Most of us have even tried alternative methods of weight loss, but to little or no success. So when we see ads like this we think, wow in just three short weeks I can drop a pant size just by eating Special K cereal. Can it really be that easy? People are persuaded to buy the cereal so they can, in just three weeks, have the hanger they have always dreamed of.

The ad states that all you have to do to lose inches off of your waistline is to replace two meals a day with one cup of Special K cereal and / cup of skim milk and in three weeks you can loose 0.8 inches from your waistline. Nowhere in the ad does it promote you to exercise. Nowhere in the ad does it advise you on what other types of food you should eat for the last meal of the day. It doesn’t explain what kind of snacks, if any, you can have. Our society wants us to be thinner and more appealing to the male eye, but ads like this only sugar coat what really needs to go into weight loss. We have failed as a society to educate people on how to eat properly and exercise.

This sets off our drive for the need to achieve. The advertiser wants you to believe that you can achieve the loss of a pant size. Do they really want us to succeed? I think they want us to be somewhat successful so that we will still by their product. As I stated earlier in the essay that this ad is geared toward women and not men. The picture one the box has a women’s waistline. I think women in general always have their figure on their minds so they can be more appealing to men and other women around them. They feel the need to be accepted. We set goals for ourselves and try with all of our willpower to stick to them. We have to endure the pain of hunger throughout the day from replacing those two meals a day with a one cup Special K meal. We use our willpower when we walk past those vending machines and see the Snickers bar or the bag of Dorritos. The obstacle that the advertisers really want you to overcome is yourself. Having self control by skipping two meals a day and replacing them with the Special K cereal gives you the drive to obtain that impossible figure that you desire.

The part of this ad that I find the most humorous is at the end. It says to “Help Yourself”. Help yourself, to only two measly one-cup servings of Special K cereal a day, plus one regular meal. A lot of people will actually buy into this promotion. Starve yourself so you can be thinner and accepted by our peers in society.

This brings up the need for attention, whether wanted or not. We have become obsessed with what people think of us. Even though we are told it doesn’t matter what we look like on the outside it’s what’s on the inside that counts. That saying is much easier said than done. People always have and probably will judge us or look down upon us for what we look like. People will start noticing me for being thinner. I will finally start receiving positive attention from my peers instead of negative attention. When I walk into a restaurant people won’t turn around and stare or point at me. I will finally be able to wear those sizes whatever pants and not have to bend my hangers anymore. People will start paying attention to me and noticing me because I am thinner.

In conclusion this ad is trying to sell a cure for being overweight. As I have stated earlier though, Kellog’s the maker of the cereal doesn’t promote any other type of maintenance. Two cups of cereal a day isn’t going to solve the ultimate problem. What happens at the end of the three weeks or when you have actually achieved this goal of losing a pant size? Can the person start eating again? Or do they have to eat Special K cereal for the rest of their life to maintain that perfect figure. This ad wants you to buy Special K for the rest of your life to keep your newly found beautiful figure.
