Since there were demand and supply towards human resources, especially in the business world, whether or not it was for either supply and mobilization of simple manpower or effective use of expert manpower, it is generally agreed that the activities of effectively and efficiently making use of people’s skills and relevant ability to the work and ,going further, applying these things into practice have been regarded as an essential factor in competing with rivals and making more profit by it.

With the advent of the term, it is true that the term has been gone through the process of redefinition several times by many scholars. What is more, people have had slightly different ,or sometimes quite different, evaluation and opinion about effective value and usefulness of it.

This essay will deal with the question as to how the term ‘Human Resource Management’ has been perceived. It will look at its history and recent theories as well as making attempt to show its impact in Britain.

In order to define and fully understand the term ‘Human Resource Management’, it is important to trace its origin and phases it passed through. The roots of this profession can be found in the nineteenth century when pressure for reform of working conditions from members of labour movement and work of social performers like Robert Owen and Rowntree, which had been called the movement towards ‘industrial betterment’ made possible emergence of the earliest attempts at welfare policies. At the beginning responsibilities of the first welfare workers were mainly in “dispensing benefits to the deserving and unfortunate employees”(Torrington et al., 11 ).

The World War I pushed welfare workers to higher position, welfare services were made obligatory at Munitions factories; it was an industrial relations function in its modern sense that started to shape. The inter-war period characterised by the shift in the focus of the welfare officers from caring one to more organizational, to objectives such as staffing and training. In the 10s and 10s “in the large organizations, such as ICI…and Mark & Spencer, the first specialist personnel departments were formed”(Tyson and York, 000 55). Following new developments in works of thinkers like Taylor (1856-115), Fayol (1841-15) and Mayo (1880-14) personnel managers became more aware of administrative processes and management itself (Torrington et al, 00).

Second World War saw an embrace of personnel management practices not only by war factories were it expanded in its staffing aspects, but also by many anxious companies, which wanted to have maximum productivity; rise of trade unions, which helped to acquire new skills by practitioners in bargaining and institution such as joint consultation committees were established (Bratton and Gold, 1, 00).

During the next twenty years after Second World War personnel management grew once more in its position and became preoccupied with effectiveness of whole organisation, its focus changed from dealing mainly with employees towards dealing with management more than with employees (Tyson and York, 000). Next stage of development of personnel management from the 170s to the early 180s is usually associated with planning or workforce planning boosted by new technology (Torrington and Hall, 18).

The most recent phase of these profession took place from the late 180s when term Human resource management emerged in Britain. It is largely associated with “change of emphasis and attitude” (Torrington et al., 11 7) towards managing of human resource. For the last twenty five years academics and practitioners were arguing about origin and nature of human resource management and its definition. These are some definitions given to the human resource management at different time and by different authors

The main dimension of HRM [involve] the goal of integration [i.e., if human resources can be integrated into strategic plans, if human resource policies cohere, if line managers have internalised the importance of human resources and this is reflected in their behaviour and if employees identify with the company, then the company’s strategic plans are likely to be more successfully implemented], the goal of employee commitment, the goal of flexibility/adaptability [i.e., organic structures, functional flexibility], the goal of quality [i.e., quality of staff, performance, standards and public image].

(Guest, 187; cited by Legge, 15 65)

HRM is a strategic approach to the acquisition, motivation, development and management of the organization’s human resources. It is devoted to shaping an appropriate corporate culture and introducing programmes which reflect and support the core values of the enterprise and ensure its success.

(Armstrong, 11 4)

Human resource management is a distinctive approach to employment management which seeks to achieve competitive advantage through the strategic deployment of a highly committed and capable workforce using an array of cultural, structural and personnel techniques.

(Storey, 15 5)

The Personnel function in organisations… can be considered in… terms of managing people [and] it is more likely to be described as Human Resource Management, it is the personnel specialist who helps to define the rules for managing people, but the fulfilment of personnel relations in the organisation resides, ultimately, in the quality of leadership provided by managers and supervisors.

(Cole, 171)

Human resource management (HRM) is a strategic approach to managing employment relations which emphasizes that leveraging people’s capabilities is critical to achieving sustainable competitive advantage, this being achieved through a distinctive set of integrated employment policies, programmes and practices.

(Bratton and Gold, 00 7)

Most of the authors, who wrote on this subject belong to different theoretical schools, which put out different models of Human Resource Management. There are at least five of them The Forbrun, Tichy and Devanna model, The Harvard model, The Guest model, The Warwick model and The Storey model. The Storey model of human resource management became very popular and has been referred to by many authors (Legge, 15; Bach and Sisson, 000; Armstrong, 000). Storey distinguishes two versions of Human Resource Management on of which can be identified as ‘soft’ and reflects developmental humanism, another as ‘hard’ and represents utilitarian instrumentalism. Most of the other models can be put under one or another version of human resource management in Storey model. Armstrong described Storey’s ‘hard’ approach to human resource management as emphasis on the importance of calculative and business strategic aspects of managing people as a resource.; in this context, it’s emphasizing resource management. The difference between ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ described by Storey is in the way it sees people as “valued assets, a source of competitive advantage through their commitment, adaptability and high quality (of skills, performance and so on)”(Storey, 18; cited by Armstrong, 000). However it is difficult to find in the reality a clear version of human resource management suggested by Storey; it is more likely that organisation will have a mixture of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ versions.

The question ‘is there difference personnel management and human resource management’ is put on the pages of nearly all book about Human Resource Management or Personnel Management. This is very important question for understanding terminology but unfortunately there is no consistency and actually big diversity in answers for it. For some authors like Armstrong, who gives an answer for the question sated above “it is simply a re-labelling and repackaging of ‘progressive’ personnel management”(Bratton and Gold, 00)

HRM is regarded by some personnel managers as just a set of initials or old wine in new bottles. It could indeed be no more and no less than another name for personnel management, but as usually perceived, at least it has the virtue of emphasising treating people as a key resource, the management of which is the direct concern of top management as part of the strategic planning processes of the enterprise. Although there is nothing new in the idea, insufficient attention has been paid to it in many organizations. The new bottle of label can help to overcome that deficiency.

(Armstrong, 187; cited by Armstrong, 000)

Other authors defend that HRM is a completely new way of management people and have more differences than similarities with Personnel Management. “David Guest (187) emphasises the differences between the two approaches in his model illustrating ‘stereotypes of personnel management and human resource management’”(Torrington et al., 00 10)

As it can be seen from everything that have been said above Human Resource Management is more likely to be a new approach to the Personnel Management equipped with the new techniques and approaches. The history of Personnel Management, which has been outlined above, shows a very interesting pattern. Firstly, throughout the years this profession added a new ways of carrying out work and a new techniques brought by changes of the historical situation. Secondly, each time a new change appear in the work, profession changed its name which was largely associated with the part it played in particular time. It seems that argument putted by Torrington is largely correct

Personnel management has grown through assimilating a number of additional emphases to produce an ever-richer combination of expertise. HRM is no revolution but a further dimension to a multi-faceted role.

(Torrington, 18; cited by Armstrong, 000)

Since its emergence in Great Britain the term ‘Human Resource Management’ have been associated with coming of the new ideas and practices. It can be argued that there are no new ideas and practices but new approach, new emphasis and new angle from which we view the old ideas and practices. Some of them will be explored to show to what extend, if any, they have effected British employee relations is the last twenty five years.

First of all an important part of any organisation is it’s employee, their involvement and commitment to the organisation and its goals. In theory Human Resource Management should try to achieve next outcome thought its practices a “committed employee” who “will willingly identify with corporate goals and work flexibly to achieve them”(Pilbeam and Corbridge, 00 1). Some part of employee commitment had been measured in WERS thought these statements

• I share many of the values of my organisation;

• I feel loyal to my organisation; and,

• I am proud to tell people who I work for.

(Cully et al., 1 185)

The respond from employees of all levels were mostly united in agreeing to all statements, yet most widespread commitment and especially loyalty were shown by professional managerial staff, the least by skilled workers. It should be pointed out that commitment usually exist in close link with job satisfaction and job security (Cully et al., 1). In part of involvement some sings of differences, brought by new practices, can be seen for activities like regular meetings, problem-solving groups and staff attitude surveys, yet this changes occur in less than a half of workplaces (Sisson and Storey, 000). However, in less than a half of organizations participating in groups are rewarded; surveys taking place mainly in large organizations.

The training and development is second in line of practices. The term human resource management by itself gives emphasis to the human capability or managing people as recourse, which “implies that people are an investment; the latter that people are a cost, or commodity, to be minimized and to be efficiently deployed. If HRM is to have a distinguishing characteristic, however, which marks it out as a different way of managing, it has to be…in focusing on the development of people” (Hendry, 15 4). Training had been received by employees as formal ‘off-the-job’ training in over eighty per cant places. The proportion of employees received training varied depending on sector of business and size as well as occupation of employee. In public sector it was higher than in workplace which is a part of bigger organisation (57 per cent and 47 respectively). Availability of employee development plan will be discussed later.

The biggest issue is the strategic integration, which often pointed out as crucial element of HRM in it distinction from personnel management (Beardwell and Holden, 001). The vertical integration is aimed to “achieve a close relationship between business strategy and people management strategy” at the same time horizontal integration is aimed to “ensure that personnel and development activities are mutually reinforcing… in other words, the pursuit of a business focus to people management which creates and sustains competitive advantage”(Pilbeam and Corbridge, 00 1).In pursuit of strategic integration several problems occur first and foremost is how to assess integration and on what level it should be to be recognised as one (Pilbeam and Corbridge, 00). Workplace Employee Relations Survey 18 demonstrate that nearly seventy per cant of workplaces had a formal strategic plan, which enclosed as it part the employee development plan, over eighty per cent of human resource managers from these participated in its preparation (Cully et al., 1) The links between corporate strategy and Human Resource Strategy are very problematic to find and measure. Depending on the size of the organisation there can be no link (usual cause is insufficient human resource strategy) or Human Resource Strategy is driven by corporate, in other cases it could be other way around. Some authors stress that integration depends on several factors position of most senior human resource manager/director, attitude of company towards people’s value and so on. Research conducted by Hall and Torrington in 18 shows increase in a senior positions among human resource practitioners between 184 and 14 up to 6 pre cent, then again only a little over fifty per cent of them had role which included decision-making (Torrington et al., 00).

The table below shows the use practices, however, the use of some of them could be more widespread

Table 1.1 Percentage of workplaces using ‘new’ management practices and employee involvement schemes.

Appraisal and reward

Most non-managerial employees have performance formally appraised 56

Individual PRP scheme for non-managerial employees 11

During the last quarter of the century debates never stopped concerning definition and impact of Human Resource Management in Britain. It can’t be argued that since 180’s management of employee relations has passed through major changes, which occur in all its aspects. The whole business environment has changed, some miner and some radical. However, the main subject of now human resource management didn’t it is still people (Millward, 000).

INTRODUCTION

Secondary Markets are the markets wherein already existing issues and debt instruments like debentures and G Secs and other corporate bonds are traded.

Secondary market is an essential part of the capital market. Any transaction, that occurs after the primary offering (like IPO), is known as a secondary transaction. Such transactions occur in the secondary markets.

Predominantly, secondary market dealings are that of equity of various companies which are listed across the several stock exchanges established throughout the country. This enables the shareholders to easily sell their holdings, thereby ensuring liquidity for them.

Early Days Of Stock Markets

The origin of stock markets in India goes back to the nineteenth century. The first stock exchange to be established in India was set up in the year 1875. The next was Ahmedabad Stock Exchange in 184 and Calcutta Stock Exchange in 108.

Calcutta and Bombay Stock Exchanges were the active centers of Trading in the 1th and the 0th centuries. Trading was concentrated in the bank stocks like Bank of Bengal, Chartered Mercantile Bank, Chartered Bank and Oriental Bank.

Currently there are stock exchanges in India. They were founded at different times, in different places, under different laws. However, all of them have now been recognized and regulated under a single law, namely the Securities Contracts (Regulation) Act,156. The stock exchanges are Self Regulatory Organizations (SROs) under the act. In addition to ordinary regulatory powers over the stock exchanges, the Central Government and/or SEBI can nominate upto three members to the board of each stock exchange. The Government and SEBI have the authority to make, approve and amend the bye-laws of stock exchanges. In return, the stock exchanges have been granted strong regulatory authority over its members i.e. the Stock Brokers.

Stock Exchanges are managed by a Governing Body which consists of a President, a Vice-President, an Executive Director, elected Directors, public representatives and nominees of the Government as discussed above. The governing body is responsible for the policy making and for ensuring the smooth functioning of the exchange.

In December 15, SEBI setup the Inter-Exchange Coordination Group, consisting of heads of all major stock exchanges and representations from regional stock exchanges to help improve the compliance process among the stock exchanges.

DISCUSSION QUESTION 1

Even though an engagement letter is not officially required, SAS 8 (AU10) requires that auditors document their understanding of an engagement in the audit files. This documentation should include engagement objectives, responsibilities of both the auditor and management and any engagement limitations.

The engagement letter is important because it provides a clear understanding of the terms of the engagement for both the auditor and the client.

Items that should be included in the letter are

1. Whether the auditor will perform an audit, review or compilation.

. Any other services such as tax returns or management consulting.

. Any restrictions to be imposed on the auditors work.

4. Deadlines for completing the audit.

5. Client’s personnel to be provided to assist the auditor in obtaining records and documents.

6. Schedules to be prepared for the auditor.

7. An agreement on fees.

8. A statement that the auditor cannot guarantee that all acts of fraud will be detected.

CPA Responsibilities

1. Perform an audit of Lakeside’s financial statements.

. Prepare Lakeside’s federal and state income tax returns.

. Complete the audit report by February , 004.

4. To perform the audit in accordance with Generally Accepted Auditing Standards.

Management Responsibilities

1. Establishing and maintaining effective internal controls over the financial statements.

. Identifying and ensuring the company complies with the laws and regulations applicable to its activities.

. Making all financial records and related information available to the auditor.

4. Providing a representation letter that will confirm management’s responsibility for the preparation of the financial statements in conformity with GAAP, the availability of financial records and related data, the completeness and availability of all minutes of the board and committee meetings, and to the best of its knowledge and belief, the absence of fraud involving management or those employees who have a significant role in the entity’s internal control.

DISCUSSION QUESTION

As an auditor on the Lakeside Case there are a few sources that should be looked at when arriving at an expected figure for Cost of Goods Sold. The analytical review should be composed of financial ratios, such as Days to Sell Inventory, and profit margin. After these ratios have been computed they can then be compared to the average of those in their industry. These industry ratios are reported by such companies as Standard and Poor’s. Another analysis would be of prior years. Analyze the income statements (Cost of Goods Sold, Gross Profit) from the prior two years to identify trends.

DISCUSSION QUESTION

Inherent risk would be high for Lakeside’s inventory account and also for their Plant, Property and Equipment. Since the predecessor auditor felt that there was a material misstatement in the valuation of one of Lakeside’s stores, a more vigorous audit should be planned for Plant, Property & Equipment. Retail businesses have a high inherent risk for obsolete inventory. The auditor should examine Lakeside’s internal controls where transactions affecting inventory are concerned. Because Lakeside has several stores, inventory theft and fraud could exist. Again, a more vigorous audit should be performed on inventory.

Abernethy is auditing Lakeside for the first time. Auditors gain more knowledge about a client’s business and their internal controls after auditing a client’s financial statements for several years. There is an inherent risk for first time auditors that material misstatements will not be detected.

DISCUSSION QUESTION 4

According to the textbook, “Essentials of Auditing and Assurance Services”, evidence is “any information used by the auditor to determine whether the information being audited is stated in accordance with the established criteria”. Examples of evidence are oral testimony of the auditee (client), written communication with outsiders, observations by the auditor, and electronic data about transactions. Every auditor is faced with the decision to determine the appropriate types and amounts of evidence to accumulate to be satisfied that the components of the client’s financial statements are fairly stated.

The quantity of evidence obtained determines its sufficiency. The sufficiency of evidence is measured primarily by the sample size the auditor selects. There are several factors that determine the appropriate sample size in audits. However, the two most important ones are the auditor’s expectation of misstatements and the effectiveness of the client’s internal controls. In addition to sample size, the individual items tested affect the sufficiency of evidence. Samples containing population items with large dollar values, items with a high likelihood of misstatement, and items that are representative of the population are usually considered sufficient.

DISCUSSION QUESTION 5

In auditing, there are seven types of evidence. Mitchell is applying one type of evidence, analytical procedures, that use comparisons and relationships to assess whether account balances or other data appear reasonable. Analytical procedures are used extensively in practice and their use has increased with the availability of computers to perform the calculations. The Auditing Standards Board has concluded that analytical procedures are so important that they are required during the planning and completions phases on all audits.

There are many reasons to analytical procedures for Lakeside’s trial balance and other accounting data. First, analytical procedures provide an understanding of the client’s industry and business. By comparing the current year’s unaudited information to the prior year’s audited information, changes are highlighted and can represent important trends or specific events, which influence the planning of the audit. Next, assessing the company’s ability to continue as a going concern is another function of analytical procedures. Certain procedures such as evaluating a higher-than-normal ratio of long-term debt to net worth is combined with a lower-than-average ratio of profits of total assets, a relatively high risk of financial failure maybe revealed. The last and almost certainly the most significant purpose of analytical procedures are indicating the presence of possible misstatements in the financial statements. Significant unexpected differences between the current year’s unaudited financial data and other data used in comparisons are commonly called unusual fluctuations. Unusual fluctuations occur because of an accounting misstatement because significant differences are not expected but do exist or when significant differences are expected but do not exist.

Exercise 1(a)

Ratio 001 00 Significance of Change

Current 1.6 1.6 No fluctuation, indicating a stable liquidity

position (based on this measure of liquidity).

Avg Collection 0.6 4.71 This fluctuation indicates that it is taking longer for

Period (Days) Lakeside to collect customer accounts. Lakeside should

be cautious and not allow the average collection days to

be too high, so that the allowance for doubtful accounts

becomes larger therefore losing profits.

Days to Sell .04 100.5 The increase in days to sell inventory indicates a difficulty

Inventory in selling inventory. Companies seek to sell inventory

quicker in order to create accounts receivables sooner,

thus collecting cash more rapidly.

Net Profit .78 .7 Not a significant fluctuation, however, for a company like

Margin % Lakeside, the goal for a larger the profit for every $1

it generates in revenue should be in order for next year.

Return on 8.47 6.7 This ratio is frequently the main performance indicator of a

Assets company. A decrease in this ratio for Lakeside indicates

that the company is misusing its assets and losing profit.

Return on .17 6.41 Significant decrease indicates less income in 00 for

Equity every $1 invested by common shareholders when

compared to 001. Therefore, the higher this ratio, the

better.

Times Interest .57 .7 Because the ratio lowered from 001 to 00, this

Earned suggests a difficulty in paying interest expense. This may

be due to the decrease in income from operations and the

increase in notes payable-trade throughout the year.

Debt To Total 74.45 74.5 No significant fluctuation. Indicates that Lakeside has

Assets % used debt to finance approximately 75% of its assets &

ownders financed the rest. Creditors view a high debt ratio

with caution.

Exercise 1(b)

Ratio Industry Avg. Lakeside00 Significance of Change

Current 1.7 1.6 Lakesides current ratio stayed the same from 001 to

00. However, it is below the industry average. This

could mean a shortage of working capital required for

competition in the industry.

Avg Collection 11.0 4.71 Lakeside is well above the industry average. This would

Period (Days) mean a larger allowance for bad debt. However,

Lakesides allowance for bad debt went from 6.5% of

Receivables in 001 to only 6.% in 00. This may also

indicate short-term solvency problems.

Days to Sell 65.40 100.5 Lakeside is well above the industry average which means

Inventory their inventory levels are too high. This could create

cash flow problems for Lakeside.

Net Profit . .7 Lakeside is lower than the industry average but not

Margin % significantly.

Return on 6.0 6.7 Their return on assets is higher than the industry average.

Assets This shows Lakesides ability to generate larger profits

for each dollar of assets.

Return on 1.7 6.41 Lakeside is well above the industry average. The EPS

Equity of Lakeside is quite high.

Times Interest .8 .7 Lakeside is well below the industry average. This means

Earned there could be a serious problem concerning their

ability to make interest payments on their loans.

The industry average has increased over the past three

years while Lakesides ratio has decreased.

Debt To Total 1.6 74.5 Lakeside has an extremely high debt to asset ratio.

Assets % There borrowing capacity is severely compromised.

Lakesides profitability ratios seem to meet or exceed industry norms. However, their liquidity and

solvency ratios are not good. Abernethy should pay close attention to their liability accounts and

examine their loan agreements and notes payable.

EXERCISE 1 (C)

Findings Significance

1. Debit in Allowance for Doubtful Accounts Bad Accts may be increasing or debit entry misposted.

. Inventory has increased from 001 to 00. Sales have decreased or inventory needed has been overestimated.

. Accounts Payable have increased. Possibly due to the overestimation of inventory needed, creditor amounts increase.

4. Estimated bonus liability has increased significantly. Employees taking larger

bonuses, possible bonus policy change.

5. Notes Payable have increased. Possibility due to overestimation of inventory.

6. Cost of Goods Sold in Store # have risen. Check into the expenses in store .

7. Repairs & Maintenance have increased. Check possible problems.

From the Salem witch trials to the civil rights movement, we as Americans have never been accepted the way we are. There will always be someone judging you, either its yourself or your arch enemy. We buy the clothes that are in style because we think it might make us look cool in the eyes of other and maybe it does but we still have to work to be accepted. Jocks, rockers and rappers all experience different high schools. What about that nerd that eats lunch all by himself in a corner because no one wants to socialize with them as it might harm their reputation? Rappers and rockers all hang out at different ends of the school while the straight and gay avoid each other at all costs. Why not accept each other for who we are? If this really was a society in which we could live as we wanted and not have to have the newest line of fashion or the like one type of music this place we call America would be very different. It is not impossible to achieve but it is inevitable. Maybe if we all would not care what the other boy or girl at school thought about your raggedy shirt, then would we get there.

The rest that I am writing here is just to be able to get acces to this website because I need 50 words and I only have 08 so I am just wasting time while I sit here and write a lot of nonsense. Thank you goodbye

Use APA format (See Hacker handbook or an online APA site for examples) and a signal phrase to introduce the expert(s) whose reader-centered guidelines you are promoting. Example Communication Consultants Arthur Bell and Dayle Smith (1) have developed proven communication approach to facilitate writing called . . ..(p.48). Refer to them subsequently by last names (Bell and Smith also recommend. . . . .).

1. Citations are necessary whenever you quote or summarize someones specific information or ideas within a report or paper. Even when you DO use outside sources, you will mostly summarize because quoting more than a sentence or two will bore readers and undermine your own authority as the report or paper author. Bring in the outside expert to clarify, reinforce, or justify your ideas because most people are resistant to change and confused by new approaches.

You can gain authority by introducing and quoting or summarizing the experts point at the beginning of your own point, putting the citation immediately at the end of the quoted sentence or at the end of a couple sentences of summary. Then you continue, using your own explanation, examples, and facts to promote the experts ideas within your organization or group. Try this approach with resistant readers who may question your authority and wisdom.

You can justify or clarify the points youre making by bringing in the experts to punctuate or clarify your ideas, summarizing data from the experts findings, the experts example, or the experts particularly provocative quote.

. How frequently should you list the parenthetical citations?

Citation frequency varies with the field. When youre summarizing in a humanities paper using MLA, you will cite page numbers more frequently than with APA, for example. See Hackers remark on the bottom of p. 1, for example.

With any documentation system or style, an immediate citation is necessary with any quote, even if your next sentence summarizes material from that same expert. You may introduce this continuing summary (Bell and Smith also report . . . .) or simply list the names in parenthesis at the end of their summarized ideas (Bell & Smith, 1, p.48). Leave out the parenthetical page number if youve summarized their ideas from widely scattered pages, but always include a signal phrase and page number for your initial citation. Communication consultants Arthur Bell and Dayle Smith (1) recommend blah, blah, blah (p.48).

Once youve cited an outside source, you can reference them again later Bell and Smith (1) have also mentioned. . . . , leaving out the page numbers this time unless you have quoted or included a highly specific paraphrase. Many writers leave out the date as well in subsequent APA references, which is fine for Report 1.

If you are taking examples from your Study Group, make them anonymous examples, briefly telling the writing situation, so your readers arent confused about what they represent. No citations are necessary.

Introducing YOUR OWN employees writing as a Report 1 example (If you are using an example from your own organization, please heed my warning NOT to mention names and to put the example in a positive context.) One of our own employees faced the challenge of answering an angry customer in this email message (You would quote your brief example here.) If youre including a reader-centered revision of that same example, again introduce it tactfully It would be easier to convince this customer by emphasizing the benefits (reorganizing the information, or whatever) Then follow with the revised example. NEVER criticize a current employee in public unless you want to be the most hated manager in the office and want your employees to feel paralyzed every time they write.

What is love? is it not a feeling, a dream, a look? How long must it take for one to know he/she is in love? And if it is longer then an hour is it really love? One could say love is in the eyes, the window to the soul; another could say love could not be seen by the eyes for they only tell so much. But what about fate, if fate exists what does it matter if the love is in the eyes or truly in the heart? And at what point is life swept out of the beholder’s hands and into those of fate? if Shakespeare would have answered, i believe he would have said, when those hearts of the beholders do feel love there life is taken by love. Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, is a love story struck down by fate and doomed to tragedy.

When considering the destruction of Romeo and Juliet the most significant fact you must think about is fate. Fate, above all, destroyed Romeo and Juliet. Many instances in the play reveal that the love of Romeo and Juliet would end in death. A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life. (pg., Prologue, line 6) From the very beginning it is evident that they were destined by the stars to bad fortune. Some people may think that there is no way to control fate or change what is in the stars. It could be that the love of Romeo and Juliet was destined for death so that their parents feud would be over. Also, the prologue states that the dreadful course of their love was destined for death. The fearful passage of their death marked love. (pg., Prologue, line ) Both of these quotes show us that the love of these two was destined to end tragically from the beginning. The masquerade party was above all the most important aspect of fate. The fact that Romeo was wearing a mask and his face was hidden allowed Juliet to fall in love with him before she saw who it was. If Juliet had known who Romeo was she would probably have not fallen in love with him. Fate could not have been changed whatever was meant to be would happen and no one could change that.

Some days after the ball, Benvolio and Mercutio are conversing, in regard to the quarrelsome weather. Benvolio declares, The day is hot, the Capulets abroad,/ And if we meet we shall not ‘scape a brawl,/ For now these got days is the mad blood stirring. (III, i, lines -4) At this point, Tybalt, who has challenged Romeo because of his appearance at the masquerade, enters, seeking Romeo. On Romeo’s behalf, Mercutio struggles with Tybalt, while Romeo, who is filled with love for his new cousin, tries to end their boldness. Before escaping, Tybalt plunges his sword into Mercutio, causing death to fall upon him. Mercutio blames Romeo and the feud for his fate. Romeo kills Tybalt, who taunts Romeo, upon his return. Romeo fears he will be condemned to death if he does not flee before the arrival of the Prince. Benvolio recalls the events that have happened, with some embellishment. The Prince declares

“And for that offence/ Immediately we do exile him hence./ I have an in

your hate’s proceeding,/ My blood for your rude brawls doth lie a-bleeding;/ But I’ll amerce you with so strong a fine/ That you shall repent the loss of mine./ I will be deaf to pleading and excuses;/ Nor tears nor prayers shall purchase out abuses;/ Therefore use none. Let Romeo hence in haste,/ Else, when he’s found, that hour is his last./ Bear hence this body and attend our will./ Mercy but murders, pardoning those that kill”. (III, i, l 185-15)

Where upon, Romeo has to leave Verona and go to Mantua, leaving Juliet alone and desperate for Romeo. Which is another step to the tragic downfall of the lives and dreams of these two lovers.

Juliet, who refuses wed Paris, asks for Friar Laurence’s assistance, where upon he gives her a poison. The day before the wedding, Juliet is to drink the poison, which will make her appear to be dead. In forty-two hours she shall awake, with Romeo by her side. Romeo will then bring her to Mantua with him. In the meantime Friar Laurence will convey a message to Romeo in Mantua, telling him the plot. When she gains consciousness, Romeo and Friar Laurence will be there. Friar Laurence says, Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift,/ And hither shall he come; and he and I/ Will watch thy waking (IV, ii, lines 115-117) Following Juliet’s intake of the poison, Romeo is anticipating news from Verona. Balthasar, a servant to Romeo, tells Romeo that Juliet has died. Romeo, who is told there are no letters from the friar, seeks a way to accomplish his suicide. Meanwhile, Friar Laurence confronts Friar John, who was to deliver the letter to Romeo. Friar John informs Friar Laurence that he was seeking another Franciscan, who was visiting the sick, to accompany him to Mantua. He says, Suspecting that we both were in a house/ Where the infectious pestilence did reining,/ Seal’d up the doors, and would not let us forth;/ (V, ii, -11) Friar John tells that he could find no one to deliver the letter, for fear they may catch the infection. The letter is not sent, Romeo knows not of the friars plan, fate rises over all arrangements, and leads its own paths.

Then many will ask, why? Why is the strongest, most beautiful love crushed my hate? Why can’t a love so strong conquer hate? And Shakespeare answers it does. The love if these two lovers is strong enough to end the feud of the families, but only in death. only by death of young love could the families see the danger of there hate, allowing it to stop. only the same amount of extreme love and hate could end the feud at such a drastic fate.

Critical Thinking Styles and Forces of Influence Making decisions is a major portion of the managers responsibilities. It is an aspect that cannot be taken lightly nor can it be done in a hasty manner. Hasty, careless decisions can have devastating results on the managers department or even for the entire company. Decisions that are made with deliberation using different kinds of processes, however, can lead the department or company to better and/or more profitable operations. When decisions are indeed made in this manner, the manager should feel confident that he or she has made an appropriate decision and is the best option given the information available at the time. This does not mean to say that the manager will always make the correct decision; lack of information or situational changes can lead to faulty analysis. However, if the manager uses critical thinking and proven successful decision-making strategies, he or she can and should be confident in whatever action they have decided is appropriate. Their own confidence level will, in fact, affect the outcome of their action. Forces of Influence “Managers can be called “information workers”; a manager is a craftsperson whose raw material is information (McCall & Kaplan 16).” Managers spend the majority of their time absorbing information and trying to process all the information in order to reach a decision of some sort or another. With in the realm of the information system a manager has many sources of where he or she may get this information, including, (a) systems and structures set up to keep them apprised on ongoing events, (b) the people around them who volunteer information and can be approached in search of trouble signs, clues, and missing pieces of puzzles, (c) the values of the organization, which point people in certain directions and define the critical variables in a complex array of possibilities, and (d) the manager’s own direct experience” (16). Management information systems aid a manager in developments for his or her area, which can be a strength or a weakness depending on the complexity of the system. One major problem with this whole process is the manager’s mind to go into what is called by many as an information overload. This can lead a manager to make faulty decisions based on information that is relevant to his or her judgement but fail at investigating the information for the opposing idea or situation. Managers rely heavily on the associates that surround him or her to gather and provide him or her with the information needed to complete a particular scenario. Although the associates may or may not have the proper information it is still a primary source and influence that a manger must use. Another way managers obtain information is by the guiding values and beliefs within their organization. This contributes to a manager’s separation of relevant information from irrelevant information from the perspective of the organization expectations. In addition to values and beliefs, the direct hands-on experience of a manger is a good source for obtaining necessary information. When a manager is encountered with a problem he or she has experienced before, they have firsthand information to work through the problem, as they deem necessary, because they already have the personal understanding and knowledge needed in working with the information. Forms of Thinking A big factor in what managers use to process the information he or she encounters relies heavily upon their cognitive process. Which according to McCall and Kaplan is the first step in making sense out of the information that is in front of them at the time. Managers process information through nine different processes including making sense of the pieces; processing only so much; simplifying the information; utilizing an emotional component; defining a reality; digging for information; knowing what one is doing; knowing one’s self; and having an open mind. Another approach used to process information is the logical scientific approach. Which according to McAulay, Russell and Sims note that within the logico-scientific mode of decision making, it is important to discover the whole truth about the situation in order to make a logical and definitive decision. This type of decision cannot be based on ones opinion or even the opinion of the team; it must be based on hard evidence (). To base decisions on personal perspectives or opinions without taking the time to analyze the situation can result in losses for the company. One other factor that is definitely an influence and a thinking pattern, which can effect a decision-making process, is the manager’s personality. Different personality types have been related to decision-making strategies used. Waldersee and Sheather addressed this issue in a study they did. They found that characteristics such as problem solving style, locus of control, the need for achievement, risk aversion and the degree of tolerance the manager has for ambiguity are all directly related to the strategy used to make decisions. Personality characteristics then drive the implementation of whatever decision has been made. For example, some studies have concluded that an internal locus of control is directly linked to innovations within the company as well as to a greater effectiveness in managing. Other studies have linked a willingness to accept risk and a high degree of tolerance for ambiguity to being effective in building the company but not in maintaining it at any given level. These researchers caution the reader that personality characteristics are not the only determining factors in decision making strategies; there are also the factors of experience and the inter-relationship of personality within the specific context of the situation. Further, both the mission of the organization as a whole and the functioning of the team of which the manager is a member play a significant part in how managers will make decisions (1000). The most significant personal decision making challenge I have experienced happened at the time of graduation from college. I had been given informal assurances of employment upon graduation from a few companies in Japan. However, I have long wanted to work at the financial capital of the world, Manhattan, to test my capability as a professional. I was urged to choose either taking an immediate opportunity or fulfilling my career ambitions in New York. I thought seriously about not only the immediate future but also the consequences to my life. I looked at each situation individually, weighed potential outcomes carefully, and arrived at a decision to strive for my dream. Fortunately, I was able to find a contract-based employment at a bank in Manhattan and enjoying my life everyday, and this experience has given me self-confidence about the decision I made. Now, I view each task as a new challenge and turn it into an advantage for my personal development regardless of significance.

At around the time of college graduation, I was being torn between employment in the financial capital of the world, Manhattan, and some tempting job offers near my friends, family, and heritage in Japan. Shakespeare’s Othello should have been called Iago because Iago is by far the most interesting of all the main characters in the play, and the play seem to revolve around the consequences of Iago’s lies and deceptions. The “honest Iago” is actually pure evil, and in the final scene of the play, he pushes everyone towards their tragic end, including the leading character Othello. Iago’s opinion of himself is very high, he enjoy being evil, and seem to have his way in outwitting everyone to the very end. Iago is the kind of person who can lie without remorse and turn on the appearances of being funny and charming at the right moments. At the outset, Iagos official reason for his hatred of the Moor, Othello, comes from the fact that Othello passed over him in choosing a lieutenant. However, as the play rolls on, it becomes more apparent that there are other motives such as greed, jealousy, and the suspicion that Othello is sleeping with his wife. However, these are only excuses for his actions because his real contempt for Othello is motivated by bigotry. Although Iago knows how to hide his bigotry well, but the fact that Othello is black and is his superior annoys him to no end. This motivates him to go on a secret mission to destroy Othello, and various others who gets in the way.

As mentioned above, one of the major reasons for Iago’s hatred of Othello is due to being overlooked for promotion to the lieutenant. Whether it is valid or not, Iago truly believes that he is the most deserving person for the promotion. However, the promotion went to Cassio who, according to Iago, is only an arithmetician that has had no experience on the battle field “That never set a squadron in the field,/Nor the division of a battle knows/More than a spinster; unless the bookish theoric,/Wherein the toged consuls can propose/As masterly as he. Mere prattle, without practice” (CITE). Iago further justifies his worthiness for the job by claiming that there were these three very important persons who, out of their own concerns, asked Othello to give Iago the job “Three great ones of the city, / In personal suit to make me his lieutenant,

Off-cappd to him” (CITE). However, due to Iago’s deceptive nature, most likely it was Iago was trying to influence the outcome. Therefore, it bothers him that despite of his hard work, all his hopes are destroyed “I know my price, I am worth no worse a place” (CITE). Iago is an egotistical man and his self-esteem is hurt.

Iago’s own reason for his hatred of Othello is due to being passed over for a promotion, but Iago may have hated Othello even before that Iago despises the fact that he is beneath a Moor. In Iago’s bigoted mind, he considers his superior, Othello, as being of an inferior race. His bigotry can be felt in one of his conversations with Roderigo “And I -- God bless the mark! -- his Moorships ancient” (CITE). Iago uses the word Moorship to make fun of both Othellos character and his African ethnicity. Furthermore, Iago detests his own pretending to be a faithful follower of Othello “It is as sure as you are Roderigo, / Were I the Moor, I would not be Iago. In following him, I follow but myself;” (CITE). Clearly this is an irrational prejudice from a bigoted mind.

It can be said that greed is one of Iago’s main motives. This is evident in one of their meetings that Roderigo pleads to Iago “Iago, who hast had my purse/As if the strings were thine, shouldst know of this.” (CITE) Roderigo, who is in love with Othello’s wife, Desdemona, has been paying Iago money to help him win over Desdemonas heart. Iago mentions money on many occasions, and in one of these occasions, he explicitly asks to be paid “put money in thy purse” (CITE). However, Iago’s bigotry provides the real reason why he is willing the help Doderigo Iago does not think Othello has the right to marry the innocent and very white Desdemona. This is apparent when Iago shouts to her father, Barbantio “Even now, now, very now, an old black ram

Is tupping your white ewe” (CITE), and he continues “youll have your nephews neigh to you; youll have coursers for cousins, and jennets for germans (CITE). Iago’s tone and derogatory remarks clearly show his bigotry that fans his hatred of Othello.

Another one of the motives for Iago’s hatred of Othello is an indirect one The jealousy towards Cassio’s promotion compounded by the jealousy towards his good looks and overall appeal to others. As Iago says of Cassio “He hath a daily beauty in his life/That makes me ugly” (CITE), which suggests that Iago feels Cassio is far more attractive and charming than he is, therefore this makes Iago feel ugly. This is the only instance in the play that Iago actually feels inferior to someone. Ironically, at the same time Iago does not feel inferior to Othello. Again, this is Iago’s discriminatory mind at work.

It is evident that Iago’s hatred of Othello is partly due to his suspicion that Othello is sleeping with his wife, Emilia “I hate the Moor And it is thought abroad, that twixt my sheets He has done my office” (CITE) Although Iago might not believe it himself, or care, the thoughts of others who might be thinking that such affair is taken place is enough for Iago to want retribution. By all accounts, Othello and Emilia have not a bit of interest in each other, but Iago’s irrational bigoted mind accompanied by his view of women as whores, convinced himself that it is true. Therefore, he wants revenge and he won’t be satisfied “Till I am evend with him, wife for wife, Or failing so, yet that I put the Moor / At least into a jealousy so strong/That judgment cannot cure” (CITE) Hence, he contemplates having sex with Othello’s wife as an ultimate form of revenge. However, as he put it, if he cannot accomplish this, he can at least put Othello in a jealous rage that Othello cannot get out of. Iago’s aim is to inspire such jealousy in Othello as to provoke Othello into irrationality, and in the hope that the consequence of such can lead to Othello’s downfall. By the end of the play, Iago accomplishes his aim, and both Othello and his wife pay with their lives as the outcome.

On the surface of Shakespeare’s play Othello, it is easy to believe the reasons cited by Iago as to why he is out to destroy Othello. However, it takes a more carefully analysis to realize that one cannot take Iago at his word and most of his reasons do not add up. In the play, there are no evident to support Iago’s claim that he is more worthy of the lieutenant position than Cassio, Othello has slept with his wife, and he is actually jealous of such. Hence, hidden underneath there must be some other reason for his irrational and extreme behavior for hating Othello. Upon closer inspection, many references to Othello’s race accompanied by Iago’s subtle yet powerful derogatory remarks can be found. These findings uncover the deeper motive and reveal its ugly head, and they point to bigotry.

Nowadays, advertising plays a major role in everyday life. Companies are constantly searching for new ways to attract potential customers and to distance themselves from traditional and outdated marketing methods.

One very effective form of advertising which is widely used is “shock advertising”. It is usually used to highlight a problem and by exposing this problem in a stark and shocking manner so as to leave an imprint on the viewer. Good examples of these types of ads are the Oxfam ads showing extremely poorly and sick children starving in third world countries and the hard-hitting ads for the NSPCC in which abused children speak directly to the viewer, exposing the treatment they receive at the hands of their tormentors.

Another very popular form of advertising is comical advertising. Various companies opt for the funny and sometimes outrageous approach when selling their product. They hope that by making him laugh, they will leave their mark with the viewer and the next time he visits the supermarket, their product will stick out by simple association to the ad. A few examples of this type of advert are the ones for various lagers such as “Stella Artois” and “Fosters”. The only problem with funny advertising is that not everyone has the same sense of humour and so each advert will only attract certain people.

With the advances in technology over the years, new forms of advertising and also new platforms for advertising are appearing. The most notable of these platforms is, of course, the internet. Internet sites have become a marketing haven for companies wishing to sell a product and one can seldom visit a website without stumbling upon and ad for something or another. From simple banners at the top of a webpage to hugely annoying “pop-up ads”, the possibilities are endless. The main reason for the huge popularity of advertising on the Web is that each advert is going to reach more people in less time as the internet is available worldwide.

Most companies make profit from these forms of advertising but it isn’t the case for consumers because they get into debts to pay for the products.

Advertising really is at the forefront of innovation nowadays. With marketing methods constantly receiving makeovers to keep up with the changing of times and the new generation, who knows what and ad will look like 50 years from now?

Most people overlook communication skills, but these talents are more important than individuals may think. Although communication is something that happens everyday, not many take the time to work on perfecting their abilities. There are many different ways to communicate, whether it is telephone calls, e-mails, or even face-to-face conversation; all of them have many characteristics to make them work successfully.

Telephones are good sources of communication, for use of news, family, or just keeping in touch, but bad telephone skills can make any good talk go badly. If the person on the other end of a phone conversation is not speaking clearly and they have to keep repeating themselves because of a lack of understanding, the conversation can loose all significance. Maybe the person on the other end of the phone is out of things to say, the opposing person can loose all interest in the already dull conversation. The volume of ones voice can easily make pleasant banter go sour to whoever is listening. A loud, overpowering voice can make someone feel as if they are being yelled at, or not welcome by this person. While on the other hand, a low voice could make the listener strain to hear and almost make the sociable chat turn into a hearing test. Any of these factors could make any telephone conversation an unpleasant occasion.

The technology of today has made interacting with people so easy and abundant. One of these new technologies is e-mail, or sending letters over the Internet. Even with this effortless equipment there is still room for error, because once the letter is sent, there is no way to get it back. A mistake that commonly happens is writing to much in one letter. If there are two pages of typed mayhem the recipient may get bored. The ideas that are expressed in letters should be to the point and making the position clear. Another way to diminish bad emails is thinking about who is going to read it. If an employer is receiving a memo it should be professional. If the employer looks at the screen only to see an unorganized mess of words and ideas, he or she may not take it seriously. Taking this to consideration, rereading would perhaps be the most important step in e-mailing. When the time is taken to check over the work put into writing something, it can only help. Viewing personal writing for a second time is helpful for spelling, run-on sentences, fragment, and oddly worded phrases. The usage of rereading, checking the length, and thinking about the topic at hand can aid in any e-mailing situation.

Nearly everyone has face-to-face conversations at a point in their life, but none realize that these conversations are the easiest to spoil. An obvious advantage to a solid conversation is speaking clearly. If someone is mumbling his or her words the strained listener is not paying as much notice to the dialogue. When mumbling is a factor the chatter could loose all meaning. Keeping eye contact with the partner in a talk makes them feel more involved and required. While it also shows them that the attention is on he or she as well as the discussion. Even though eye contact is a factor almost every issue of verbal contact comes down to the volume of a voice. The loud talker seems to push away the meaning of the word exchange. While the opposite, the low talker makes the conversation second in importance, next to translating the low volume mouth movement. It seems that even though face-to-face contact is an important form of contact, but it is the kind that is widely overlooked.

Therefore, being successful at communication whether it is telephone conversations, electronic mailing, and face-to-face conversations, the characteristics that help make them successful are vast and important. The skills that are involved with communication are not usually practiced, but should at least be considered when being involved in a form of conversation.

Essay Critique

In this critique I will be explaining four of the techniques I have used in my argumentative essay. I will also show how two of these techniques have been successful and two that have not been successful.

The first successful technique I used was emotive language, using powerful language which creates a vivid image in the readers’ mind, “… urine-smelling seats or chewing gum on the arm rests…”

This was successful because it creates an image in one’s mind and you conjure up your own experience.

I was trying to make the reader relate to the description, as most have had such an experience on London Transport, as it is still relied on by scores of commuters.

This technique links to the title because it show’s that London is not worth coming to and backs up the title that London is a ‘Destination from Hell’.

The second technique I used was that was successful was introducing the opposite view point introduced with a rhetorical question, “… it is a dump, or is it?”

This was successful because it directly involves the reader as the question is directed towards the reader. Also because I am introducing a new view point which shows how many varied opinions there are on this subject.

I was trying to make the reader feel involved by the technique.

This technique links to the title because the title itself is an opinion.

One technique I used which was not successful was a short sentence that implies doubt, “… it is a dump, or is it?”

It did not work because firstly, I do not like the way I have structured the sentence. Also I think it could have been worded better.

It would have been better, if I had thought about how to word the sentence more effectively.

Another technique which was not successful was summing up with a vivid image and a definite conclusion, “I think that anyone in their right mind can think for themselves and come to the conclusion that London is not worth coming to, but to those who still believe that London is great, don’t worry there are enough stinking seats to go round!”

It did not work because the image was not vivid enough, although it is a definite conclusion.

If I were to write this again I would describe the image more and with more detail.

Overall the techniques I used in the essay were good, however some did not prove successful as I have shown you above.

How many children’s stories have you read that began with the words “once upon a

time”? We know that this is fiction. What about fiction that sounds so real that you are not sure

whether it is fiction or actual events that really happened. In the story Everyday Use, everything

sounds so real that I actually thought of a family member that compared so closely with Dee. We

can easily compare the fiction of “Everyday Use” with people of today by understanding that

social classification happens in every family, whether in fiction or real families.

In the opening of the story, Maggie and her mother, the narrator of the story, are waiting

for Maggie’s sister to arrive. No doubt they have spent all morning cooking and cleaning in

anticipation of making a good impression on Dee and her boyfriend or husband (they are unsure

of which). Many families usually have on member who has moved away to a larger city and only

comes home to the country (emphasis added) for special occasions to grace everyone with their

more sophisticated(emphasis added) presence. Maggie is a humble, homely girl who loves her

sister, but is jealous of her always getting her way. Sibling rivalry happens in every home in

which there is more than one child. The mother describes herself as a hard working woman, used

to doing as much as a man. Dee would rather she look more feminine, but mother feels like Dee

is ashamed of her. Have you ever been ashamed of your mother for being overweight, not

wearing the best of clothing, or driving a older model car?

When Dee arrives, she is dressed in a brightly colored dress that touched the ground, with

large gold earrings and bracelets. Dee knows that she will be better dressed than her mother or

her sister. Why would she knowingly try to dress better? Is it done to embarrass her family, or

just to make it clear without words that she has the financial means to have more than they have?

Dee makes the announcement that she no longer wants to be named after white people,

but wants to be called Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo, an African name. The mother recalls three

generations of women that Dee was named after and that the name could have carried back in the

generations before the Civil War. Many children at some time or another want to change their

name for some far-fetched reason, whether it is because someone has picked on them, or people

keep mispronouncing it or like Dee wanting a name from her heritage.

Dee, Wangero, is treating the visit home, like she has stepped back in time and nothing

has changed but herself. She tells her friend about times when her family could not afford to do

better, even though her mother and sister still can not afford to do any better. After the meal,

Wangero proceeds to tell her mother that she wants several everyday things that mother and

Maggie still use for daily living, so that she can decorate her home with them. This is what we

would normally do with antiques. When Wangero stated that she was going to take two hand

made quilts, Maggie was hurt because she knew that Dee would be given them, because Dee

always got everything that she wanted. The quilts were to be a wedding gift for Maggie and John

Thomas. After hearing Dee and her mother talk about the quilts, Maggie goes ahead and offers

the quilts to Dee. When Maggie’s mother sees her expression, she is hit with the fact that

Maggie has always given in to Dee and she decides that it is not going to happen this time. She

hugs her youngest daughter and takes the quilts from Dee and gives them to Maggie. Sometimes

as mothers we do unknowingly show favoritism between our children. We may feel that one

child needs more than another. Dee conveniently forgets that she was offered a quilt when she

went away to college and she turned it down because it was old.

The story is concluded by Dee telling them that they do not understand their heritage and that

they have so many opportunities now as black females. Dee does not understand that her mother

and sister are part of her true heritage. Maggie and her mother would rather live one day at a

time in a life that time has past by than to try to live in Dee’s world. Can you identify more with

Dee or with Maggie and her mother? We can relate this story to real life by understanding that

social clasification takes place in all walks of life.

Ambition is often the driving force in one’s life. It is supposed to be the motivating factor that drives one towards success. Society also deems ambition a necessary quality of their leader. It can be said that Macbeth exhibits this quality of ambition. He is the strong, valiant warrior who has won in battle and brought victory to Scotland. However, Macbeth’s quest to acquire more power-his ambition-ultimately leads to his tragic demise. How can one allow himself to be destroyed by such a thing? Before Duncan’s murder, Macbeth questions and second guesses his ambitious tendencies and actions. Despite his anxiety, he succumbs to these tendencies and finds himself in an increasingly precarious situation, with his back against the wall and growing ever closer to his almost inevitable end.

There is no doubt that Macbeth is a noble man. He risked everything he had to protect Scotland from Norway, and single-handedly took down the treacherous Thane of Cawdor

“Till that Bellona’s bridegroom, lapped in proof,

Confronted him with self-comparisons,

Point against point, rebellious arm ‘gainst arm,

Curbing his lavish spirit and, to conclude,

The victory fell on us.” (1..54-57)

Macbeth was seen as a brave and noble man by all of his peers, and even King Duncan himself. This is why Duncan proclaimed “What he hath lost, noble Macbeth hath won,” (1..67) referring to the fact that he named Macbeth to be Thane of Cawdor. One would think that after such accomplishment and high standing that Macbeth would be satisfied with his position. However, this is not the case.

It is obvious that Macbeth has ambition, as most people who are in power do. In fact, ambition is often a necessary quality of people in such high standing as Macbeth is. However, Macbeth’s ambition does not just drive him to do great things. It in fact controls him

“I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only

Vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself

And falls on th’ other---” (1.7.5-8)

Macbeth clearly realizes that his ambition is too great. It is about to make him do something that he knows is wrong, and is against everything he has supposedly stood for, yet he also knows there is nothing he can do to stop it.

Macbeth second guesses his intent to murder Duncan before he commits the crime

“We will proceed no further in this business

He hath honored me of late, and I have bought

golden opinions from all sorts of people.” (1.7.1-)

He realizes that maybe he is just better off in the position he is in right now. Maybe he should wait and acquire his higher standing in a noble way. However, through the persuasion of Lady Macbeth, he commits the murder anyway.

After the murder, one can see a clear shift in Macbeth. It was as if his killing of one man opened the flood gates for a litany of other murders he felt he needed to commit. He orders the killing of Banquo and Fleance, both of whom were once dear to him. It is as if his ambition is blinding him of his wrong-doings. One can look at Macbeth’s actions after his murder of Duncan and see that he is clearly headed on a path towards disaster, derived from one source his ambition.

It is fair to say that Macbeth’s actions in the latter parts of the play stem from a sort of madness that has consumed him. It is a madness that has derived from guilt of killing Duncan, paranoia of getting caught, and, most shockingly, a need to protect what he has wrongfully acquired the throne. His actions are clearly driven by the fact that he wants to keep his place on the throne. Instead of being remorseful of his actions, he is much more worried that he himself will be murdered because of his dastardly deed. This is obviously not the thought process of a noble main, which clearly indicates that Macbeth has lost, to some extent, his sanity.

Through all these things, one can clearly see that Macbeth is headed on a path for disaster; a path started, and forcefully driven, by his ambition. His ambition drove him to kill Duncan so he could acquire the throne. His ambition then drove him to order the murders of Banquo and Fleance. Through that process alone, one could say that Macbeth’s ambition did lead to his downfall. However, even more disastrous than the external consequences of his ambition were his internal consequences. Macbeth’s ambition was constantly putting him in a struggle between right and wrong. Macbeth finally lost this battle, and succumbed to the evil side of his ambition. Being the successful, proud, and noble warrior that he was, maybe this loss of what was good inside of him was the root of Macbeth’s insanity. One will never know, but it can be said that Macbeth’s ambition, whether through his actions or through his own internal degradation, did ultimately lead to his demise.
