“From forth the fatal loins of these two foes, a pair of star cross’d lovers take their life with misadventur’d piteous overthrows doth with their death bury their parents strife”, The ancient grudge between the Montague’s and the Capulet’s, summed up in four lines. The play of tragedy created by Shakespeare of two lovers Romeo and Juliet who meet and fall in love. The first lines of the play, known as the prologue, tell the audience what happens in the play, Shakespeare has written it like this to hook the audience into wanting to watch the rest of the play.

In the opening scene there is a huge fight, this brings contrast to the next scene with Romeo in “ay me, sad hours seem long“ this scene is much more calm than the fight scene at the beginning of the play. The fuss on the stage with all the fighting is very different from the lovers meeting the fight scene also shows how big the feud between the two families is. This makes the audience enjoy the scene more, as all the fighting and commotion makes it a lot more engaging for the audience with all the excitement of a fight. In the first lines between Sampson and Gregory, the Capulet serving men, we find them boasting about how they shall fight with the Montague men, then have sex with the maids, “I will push the Montague’s men from the wall and thrust his maids to the wall.” This contrasts with Romeo’s character, as he doesn’t see women as sexual figures this makes the audience will have more empathy with Romeo’s character he will become our knight in shining armour. The hatred between the families portrayed in the fight, shows how Romeo and Juliet’s love is deeply forbidden, “My sword old Montague is come and flourishes his blade in spite of me”

“Thou villain Capulet! - hold me not let me go” The prince and Benvolio play the peacemakers in this scene “If you ever disturb our streets again your lives shall pay the forfeit of peace.” This line is one of the most dramatically ironic in the play, as Romeo and Juliet do indeed take their lives and due to this tragedy the two families become united once again, the audience realise that this line has a dramatic undertone as they know that Romeo and Juliet will ultimately lose their lives.

The early Romeo is indeed a very different person from the man he becomes towards the end of the play, he is very confused about his love for Rosaline and Shakespeare shows this with Romeo’s language, he often speaks in oxymorons, “O brawling love, O brawling hate.” He uses broken sentences to show that Romeo is depressed about his love for Rosaline, as in fact she is a Capulet and he knows their love would be forbidden. “In sadness cousin, I do love a women.” When he meets Juliet, he instantly forgets about Rosaline, this shows that the love between Romeo and Juliet is real “With Rosaline, my ghostly father? No; I have forgot that name, and that name’s woe.” Before he meets Juliet, he talks in oxymorons and broken sentences, but when he meets her, their lines form a sonnet (this is a traditional love poem with 14 lines with 10 syllables on each line) the audience also never meet Rosaline, because if they did they would be constantly comparing Romeo’s love for Juliet with Romeo’s supposed love for Rosaline.

In act 1 scene , Paris and Capulet are discussing that Juliet should marry Paris, but Capulet thinks Juliet is too young to marry, “My child is yet a stranger in the world.” Yet Paris convinces him that younger people than her are married and are “happy mothers” Capulet relents and agrees to go ahead with the wedding. The audience are then worried that Juliet may marry Paris and forget all about Romeo, when they really want her to marry Romeo and be happy. Once they have decided that Juliet should be married, Lady Capulet talks to Juliet about it. Juliet has a very different approach towards love and marriage at this point in the play. Her first meeting with Romeo could be likened to love at first sight. Whereas, when her mother asks her how she feels about marriage in act 1 scene , she doesn’t actually want to be married yet, “It is and honour I dream not of.” This scene is a distracting one as it shows us that Juliet’s love for Romeo will never actually go right. This is another technique of Shakespeare’s to make the audience realise that the lovers will never have a “happy ending.” Many women in Elizabethan times got married a lot younger than today, as it was thought that the younger they are married the more children they could produce. Also, life expectancy in those, days was a lot shorter, with most women living to an average of 0 years old.

Shakespeare has included the character of Mercutio to show a vast contrast between the two men and their attitudes to love; this contrast enhances the deep feelings of love between Romeo and Juliet. Mercutio hates women and thinks of them only as sexual objects, merely to be used to satisfy his own sexual needs. “If love be rough with you, be rough with love.” This contrasts with Romeos opinion of love drastically. His attitude towards dreams and love, are far different from Mercutio’s. This makes Mercutio a dramatic interesting character for the audience to watch as they often wonder how Romeo would chose a friendship with someone like Mercutio as the audience would wonder if perhaps romeo was a bad judge of character or indeed he only saw the good in everyone. Mercutio is often a burden to Romeo’s true feelings dies so early in the play so that the audience can focus on the lovers. In Baz Luhrman’s version of Romeo and Juliet the director decides to dress Mercutio in women’s clothing, and directs him to act like a women. This emphasises Mercutio’s hatred of women he acts almost as if he is mocking the way women dress and act. Romeo is far different from this and sees women as humans and not things only put on this earth for childbirth. Mercutio’s character is in the play to add more drama to the lovers meeting, Romeo is scared to tell Mercutio that he loves Juliet because he knows that he will mock him for it. “Romeo! Humours! Madman! Passion! Lover!”

Shakespeare’s use of oxymorons when Juliet speaks, dramatically enhances how confused our young lover has become, ”My only love, sprung from my only hate.” After Romeo meets Juliet his choice of language and actions become more positive. The two characters become separated from the rest of the play and this is emphasised by the form of verse in which they have begun to speak.

Tybalt hates Romeo and wants him dead because he turned up at the Capulet ball and Tybalt was looking for a fight then and there, but his uncle Capulet stopped him “He shall be endur’d. What, Goodman boy, I say he shall, go to!” this brings suspense and irony to the play, as once Romeo has married Juliet Tybalt will become Romeos cousin. This makes Romeo and Juliet’s relationship even more dramatic. “Uncle this is a Montague, our foe”

At this point, the audience are eager to view the meeting of the lovers; at last they get to see what happens when they do meet. To make it even more dramatic, Shakespeare uses a number of techniques to set the meeting of the two lovers; he makes Romeo and Juliet’s speech into a sonnet. Also it has a lot of references to religion in their first speech. Shakespeare is hinting towards marriage in the meeting scene; Shakespeare also makes the audience feel sympathy for the pair, as they must be careful with their forbidden love because of the two houses hatred for each other. Of course we know that their love will never be happy, as from the prologue the audience are told that the young lovers both die, from this tragedy both families are reunited in their grief “O brother Montague, give me thy hand. This is my daughter’s jointure, for no more can I demand.”

In the Time of the Butterflies

An old Native American folk-tale states,if you have a secret wish, capture a butterfly and whisper your wish to it. Since butterflies cannot speak, your secret is ever safe in their keeping. Release the butterfly, and it will carry your wish to the Great Spirit, who alone knows the thoughts of butterflies. By setting the butterfly free, you are helping to restore the balance of nature, and your wish will surely be granted.1 The butterfly, in the case of In the Time of the Butterflies, is symbolic in a similar nature.

The butterflies represent the freedom associated with the Minerva sister’s movement. Butterflies are silent, beautiful creatures who goes through a tremendous metamorphosis, from caterpillar to butterfly. A symbol of transformation, it leaves the safety of the cocoon to make its way on its own. Anyone who is experiencing a major change, or social revolution, could be aptly symbolized as a butterfly. “The butterfly is a reminder to make changes when the opportunity arises. Change and transformation are inevitable for us all, but it does not have to be traumatic. Butterfly symbolism is also closely tied to the idea of spirits and souls. It has been used in many religions and cultures. Psyche is the Greek word for both soul and butterfly. The belief was that butterflies were human souls searching for a new reincarnation, which gave the creature uncanny and sometimes ominous connotations.” In the case of the Minerva sisters, they are searching for a way to overcome the social injustices they are forced to endure. Minerva, in particular, is looking for reformation to change an inherently inhuman and unjust political structure.

Another connection between the butterflies and the story of the Minerva sisters lies in other typical historical associations. In early Christianity, it was believed that by swallowing a butterfly, women would be come impregnated. It was commonly believed that butterflies floated in search of a new mother. “Other cultures believed that spirits of the dead took the form of white butterflies. In northern Europe to see one flying at night was a warning of death, and some said that the soul-butterflys ability to leave the body in sleep accounts for dreams.” Maribel Minerva did, in fact, have a child during the plot of the story. This is another exampled of the symbolic nature of the butterfly.

Finally, the idea of “leaving the cocoon,” symbolically represents the leaving home of the Minerva sisters. As each goes out on their own, they have goals that they attempt to achieve. By leaving the cocoon, or trying to achieve their goals, they become more beautiful than they were before. The sister’s desire for political change and their moral uprightness fosters a new attitude and culture that is represented in the “freeing of the butterflies.” While the sisters are trapped in prison, they can be compared to butterflies that have been caught. They are seeking freedom, not only from jail, but from the dictatorship of el Jefe.

In In the Time of the Butterflies, the butterfly is symbolic of transformation and political and social revolution. As the Minerva sisters transform from caterpillars to beautiful butterflies, great strides are made in bringing about social change.

Introduction to Social Work

September 15, 00

Our class discussions of empowerment can be applied to the story of Alice and her daughters. Struggling with empowerment, the teenage girls developed destructive strategies to cope with their stressful situations. As someone who wants to become an elementary school teacher as my future, I know that I will react differently to the events of the story. Counselors and teachers must have a close relationship with students because usually when children are disruptive it is attached to problems in the home. As a teacher, I hope to in the future be an encouragement to these children and to help them realize how important their education and their lives are. I feel that if a teacher or a counselor at school can become more actively involved in a students life, than perhaps intervention with a social worker may not even be necessary. As it has been said, many times the goal of a social worker is to work themselves out of their job and with the help of the schools, perhaps less intervention may be needed among children.

Another important issue that arose from this story was how negative publicity was involved with the TV cameras and the newspapers for the indigent welfare mothers. Many people of that community who know no one personally on welfare and have not been witness to their genuine and painful struggles may have concluded from that event that many who are on welfare are unworthy of it. They may generalize it to the extent that welfare is unnecessary because everyone on it could be cured of their poverty and lack of empowerment if they were not so lazy and lacked initiative. This is what I found to be greatly disturbing about the county wanting to make a show out of these mothers who clearly were not greedy and were not abusing the welfare system, but rather were neglected by the goverment. I think that the welfare system today should have greater funding through taxes. Taxes today make the rich, richer and the poor, poorer. Instead, I believe that taxes on the wealthy should not be decreased, as is the goal of the Bush administration. I feel that greater appropotionment of taxes to the welfare system could be helpful in situations such as the one with Alice and her daughters. Our legal system should be helping Alice, not prosecuting her for that which she has no control over. It is her lack of empowerment that makes her easily targeted and this is greatly disturbing.

I remember reading a book called Nickel and Dimed, by Barbara Ehrenreich that was a story about a journalist who gave up everything she had for one year to explore exactly what it is like to be a low-paid worker in America. The rhetoric surrounding welfare reform, promises that a job -- any job -- could be the ticket to a better life. But how does anyone survive, let alone prosper, on six to seven dollars an hour? To find out, Ehrenreich left her home, took the cheapest lodgings she could find, and accepted whatever jobs she was offered as a woefully inexperienced homemaker returning to the workforce. This book relates to the reading in several ways because Alice is a woman in a similar situation Barbara put herself in. Alice was offered jobs that all required a car, that she in no way could afford. I highly recommend reading this book because it helped me learn more about the great injustices inherent in the welfare system and in the people who need intervention the most.

Donnie Darko is an intense, complicated movie loaded with hidden messages, comments on human behavior, and insights into the mysteries of life and the possibilities of time travel. On the surface the film is a poppy science culture flick, with white attractive actors and actresses playing roles viewers can look at and link to people within their lives. When one looks deeper into the movie, however, this superficial layer is peeled away revealing themes and ideas about people that are incredibly powerful. There is, however, a unifying theme within the film; people who are trying to live their lives “normal,” fitting into convenient roles that are comfortable versus those who venture out to be themselves. These opposite lifestyles interwoven together really show different ways humans act, and what those actions cause. Why have this dynamic? Is the director trying to say one way to live is better than another? Only the movie can lead us to an answer.

Donnie Darko is an outcast, but not in the conventional way. He has his friends, he lives in a middle to upper class white suburban home, and goes to a private school. These people he surrounds himself with, however, don’t really know who he is. In reality, he is a boy who keeps to himself, constantly drowning in problems with his “disease” and relationship issues with his families. When his life is saved by a six feet tall metal bunny rabbit from the future, Donnie has a choice; he can go on living his just saved life, or he can act out what this rabbit wants him to do. He owes something to this being who rescued him, and this is a chance for him to step out of his normal life and do extreme things. He gets to lash out any emotion he has (which on the surface is none) and make a difference. Donnie wants to change things. He brings up change when discussing Graham Greene’s book and, when walking with Gretchen mutters so she can barely hear him that maybe one day he’ll “change things.” This is his chance to break out of the monotony and be who he really is, which may be a superhero.

Gretchen is another character trying to start a new life, break away from her past. She doesn’t want to be the scared, helpless girl she was when her dad was around. She is not just going to be another person; she too is used to being away from the normal girl mold with her life experiences, and she’s not just going to go back. She is who she is, which is shown by people she’s hardly talked to (the bullies) knowing the history of her mother. She is who she is, and her past is nothing to hide; a trait very few teenage girls exemplify.

Karen, Donnie’s English teacher, is also trying to break herself, as well as her students, away from the cookie cutter way of life and learning. She is paving new way, being the progressive teacher in the conservative school. She presents her students with a controversial book, and forces her students to delve into things. When she is challenged for her actions, she stands strong, even though it eventually costs her job. Is the director trying to say this is the way to live? As who you are and for what you believe? If so he is not shy about showing the possible drawbacks from this; and repercussions from those who do not live that way.

Kitty Farmer, quite possibly the most annoying character in a movie ever, exemplifies the idea of living “the way you should” just because it is the thing to do. She is, in both ideals and style, straight out of the 150’s. She believes in good Christian upbringing and lifestyle, and doesn’t approve of anything out of the norm. Kitty, along with the help of Jim Cunningham, provides the second way of living the director is trying to compare Donnie, Gretchen, and Karen to. Jim Cunningham is an even more extreme version of Kitty, but his “normal” lifestyle is proven false.

After looking at these characters, it is the scenes between them that show the dynamic the director is trying to compare. There are many scenes involving the characters that not only show different ways to live, but how hard it is for them to coincide. Donnie Darko is in Kitty Farmer’s class when she wants to do an exercise inspired by Jim Cunningham’s video. There are two words written on the chalkboard; Fear and Love. Every situation that is presented to the class is supposed to be placed on the board, near either word. When Kitty asks Donnie to do this, he brings up a problem with the exercise, saying “you can’t just lump things into categories, things aren’t that simple.” Kitty replies with “the life line is divided that way” Donnie “Life isn’t that simple.” There is not a more obvious scene where the director makes the distinct difference of these two types of lifestyles. He again, however, doesn’t make it obvious which he is saying is better (if any).

Another great scene for recognizing this difference involves a character that is not very prominent in the movie, but in everyday life. This involves Karen and the principle of the high school, an authority figure hired to promote a normal, bland, commonplace life. When Karen is discussing how he doesn’t have a clue about these kids she mentions that “we are losing them to this prescribed nonsense,” showing her contempt for the normal system. His only reply is “I’m sorry that you have failed,” turning all responsibility of his own into her mistakes, he hasn’t done anything out of the norm. This in charge position is symbolized by another character trying to impose a way of living of everyone else, Jim Cunningham.

When there is an assembly for the school by Jim Cunningham promoting his no fear all love lifestyle, there is a chance for the audience to ask questions. Donnie takes this opportunity to “change things;” get the other students and teachers thinking about how living with this monotony is not smart. When Cunningham is challenged, he playes an easy card “You are a troubled and confused young man,” you are not like the rest of us. To which Donnie claims proudly “I am pretty troubled and I’m pretty confused and I’m afraid, actually, really afraid… but I think you’re the fucking antichrist.” He is stating for everyone in the room to know that he is not living like everyone else, he is jumping out of his shell, met with cheers from the crowd.

The director is not showing that being who you are for everyone to know is always best, or right, or easy. Donnie is obviously very troubled, with an extreme diagnosis, and dealing with therapy. Gretchen knows who she is but still gets upset when bullies tease her about her past, and Karen knows she has lost a battle when she loses her job. These people are who they are and unashamed, but paying for it. The characters who are living the way they feel they should, trying to impose their lifestyles on others also aren’t always happy or relaxed. Jim Cunningham breaks down in tears at the end of the film, showing that he is living a lie, and has created an image he doesn’t match; losing his sense of self. Kitty can’t even be there for her daughter at Start Search because she has to defend a man who doesn’t deserve it; she’s imposed his views on so many others now she must live with them herself. She needs to bring herself to ask the most complicating character for help, after doing what she can to bring her down.

Donnie’s mother, Rose, does not fit either lifestyle. She is not living in the traditional, molded way, but not acting out on her emotions as who she really is either. She is that in the middle; the gray area the director covers to show another way to live. Rose loves her son. She misses the Donnie she had and is afraid she might be losing him to his sickness. Towards the beginning of the movie she tries to talk to Donnie but is met by a cold stranger who calls her a bitch. This is obviously upsetting to her, but she is not ready to give up on her son. She visits his doctor, and wants to do anything she can to make him better. She is not the mother to sit quietly or be ashamed of her son. After the incident with Donnie and Mrs. Farmer Rose has an incident with her. During this conversation she not only expresses great concern for her son and what’s happening, but also doesn’t give in to Kitty’s nonsense. Kitty tells her that everyone must be on a path to righteousness and that she is concerned with her abilities as a mother. This doesn’t even faze Rose. She knows she is a good mother and this righteous rhetoric doesn’t mean anything, and it’s certainly not going to save her son. She also shows her willingness to stand up for what she believes at the PTA meeting. She calls Kitty out on her ridiculous notion to ban the Graham Green book, and tries to make Kitty look dumb by asking her if she even knows who that is. There is a time, however, when she does melt back into that mold; when Kitty needs her help.

Rose has a fairly normal life, with Donnie being the only complicating factor. She could choose to ignore him, forget about him, and concentrate on her husband and two daughters, but she doesn’t. She sticks by him even though he tries to push her away, and won’t give up on him. When she is asked to go with her daughter to Star Search she has to make a choice. Donnie has been through a lot lately and his therapist even wants to increase his medication. She goes though, knowing that although she loves Donnie and will be there for him forever, she needs to let him deal with some things on his own. It may be the only way he’ll ever get better. She is living in between the rest of the characters in the movie; not being too her, because it may cause her to lose her sense of self, but not being too molded, because she then just takes the shape of those around her.

Is this what the director is going for? Is he trying to say there is a happy medium? In the end of the movie the characters that lived in convenient boxes already set up for them don’t really end up happy. Jim Cunningham is shown sobbing, knowing he is living a lie, and Kitty can’t be with her daughter for the one thing she has shown any passion for throughout the whole movie. On other side, Gretchen will be alive, never knowing what she has missed, Karen is safe with her job, and Donnie has accomplished something he never has before. He has repaid all those he has loved; finally given something to those who meant something to him. He couldn’t show his mother he loved her, or Gretchen, or even his sisters. He was thankful to Karen, and this was the only way to thank them. They would never know he did it, but it is that peace within him that is important. What Donnie Darko did was heroic, and sprung from two very different emotions; fear and love. His fear for hurting all the people he would hurt if he was to continue living, and his love for them he was unable to show. Are Jim Cunningham and Kitty right? Is that the basis for everything we do? Donnie Darko was a complicated character, but he would have been a great example for any of

Many say that history repeats itself at some point in time. As people grow up in life, they are taught the history of the world and its inhabitants. In our history, we have seen numerous forms of management amongst the many historic figures that have been pointed out to us. From kings and queens, to generals and entrepreneurs, the world has seen its share of different management. In the United States, powerful management and confidant leadership has helped this country become an independent and thriving entity. Since that time, the management and leadership styles have changed, and many trends have taken place.

Since the creation of the United States, managers and leaders have been a critical part of creating a stronger country. Through great knowledge and experience, leaders in the early armies motivated their soldiers to victory in the countless wars that the United States has faced. With great planning and management styles such as strategic thinking, these leaders persuaded the troops to give their life for their country. But during these times, management was in my opinion, a crude and inhumane practice. The same can be said for the private sector, other than in the military. In the past, wages and benefits were either non-existent or terrible, children used were used for labor, managers and owners were cruel to the workers, and work conditions were unbearable. But fortunately as times changed, so did the management styles and many of the business conduct laws.

Currently, employment and fair treatment laws have change the way organizations do business and treat their employees. The exploitation of child labor has been banned in the United States and so has the use of sweat shops. Managers are no longer allowed to hit or cruelly punish their employees. In private businesses and in the military, the term kindler and gentler has been adapted because of all the right that an employee now has. This has lead to a change in management. The need for more intelligent and quick thinking managers and leaders began to grow. Manager now need to have degrees and have a high level of experience to be considered for a position.

The future holds similar changes for the management groups of the United States and in the rest of the world also. As generations grow, they learn and become experts with the technology of their time. This means, that when they enter the workforce, they may be more knowledgeable on the new technology then their future management. To adjust for this, management will need to keep up to date with the new technology and they will have to have higher levels of education to be able to lead these newer generations of workers. With a higher base of knowledge to start with, managers will most likely be creating more detailed plans and strategies, and they will creating more efficiencies.

In the past, leaders and managers relied on human and animal messengers to pass critical information to other sectors of their business or their troops. This was an extremely long process that required having a lot more competent managers and leaders to do simple jobs. They were based on a large pyramid structure that most likely cost the company large amounts of revenue. With the much advancement in technology, mangers were given tools such as telephones, computers, internet, and faster means of parcel service. With more advancement being created with telecommuting, document exchange, portable communication devices, and various means of transportations, businesses will become more automated. As these businesses begin to become more automated, their sizes will decrease and so will their need for so many managers with in the ranks.

With all the automation and technology decreasing the need for so many mangers and leaders, these businesses will begin to evolve in a flat structure. There will be fewer managers and fewer workers performing the same jobs. These managers will need to be very savvy on the new technology, the automations and they will have to able to efficiently communicate with onsite and telecommuting employees. Manager will also be able to manage employees that are based world-wide. A lot of the conference may in the future be performed via video conferencing.

Currently, most of this change pertains mostly to non-factory, non-hard labor businesses and the military because they are run differently and require the human man-power. But technology will eventually reach these other fields also. Machines and robots with possible artificial intelligence, will replace the human man-power. Managers will now be dealing with the management of these robots or their controllers. Managers and leaders can create strategies and plans in teams and instantly send them to the workers, even world-wide.

Management will see many changes in the way they conduct business. But as many things in life have done, the past may repeat itself and management may see repetition of prior styles and trend. But as for the immediate future, management will molded by the changes of technology and the changes in the economy. References

I. CASE SUMMARY

The year is 170 and the total coffee market has plateaued but the total decaffeinated segment is expected to double over the next 10 years. Furthermore, the decaffeinated coffee segment offers higher margins than the regular coffee segment making the decaffeinated coffee market a tempting target for competition. Given that Maxwell House’s Sanka held % of the decaffeinated market its position would have been reasonably secure except for one major weakness…its poor taste.

These factors prompted Maxwell House to launch Brim, a decaffeinated blend of high-quality beans with taste-oriented positioning. The introduction of Brim is a flank defensive maneuver designed to preempt competitors from entering the decaffeinated coffee market by further segmenting the overall coffee market and by providing a better tasting alternative to Sanka. Furthermore, management believed Sanka’s 4.4% hold of the Instant and Freeze-dried market was about to face a serious threat from a decaffeinated version of Nestle’s Taster’s Choice Freeze-Dried, a decaffeinated product extension of an already successful brand positioned on taste. Finally, with the introduction of Brim, Maxwell House hoped to insulate the division’s decaffeinated position by offering a better tasting alternative to Sanka.

In 174, two short years after its rollout, Brim appeared to have won the race to national expansion over Nestle’s Taster’s Choice Decaffeinated. But within the next year Brim’s growth stagnated while Taster’s Choice Decaffeinated continued to grow and Proctor & Gamble introduced High Point.

Now, two years later and six years after the introduction of Brim, the total coffee market is at a 0-year low, the decaffeinated segment has been stagnant for three years and there have been recent reports that the decaffeination process might cause cancer. It is in this environment that Brim must develop next year’s strategic plan and a five-year plan for its product group, modified coffees.

II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Several key internal and external issues play an integral part to the main issue of whether and how to revive Brim. The key internal issues includes Maxwell House Division’s recent designation as a “cash cow minus,” Brim’s negative margin and ROFE and the involvement of several levels of management. Key external issues include a stagnant mature market, increasing competition from new entrants, the growth of substitute products and the decline of Brim’s product life cycle. Faced with a stagnant industry and declining market share Brim’s product team faces two major tasks. First, immediately arrest the decline of Brim’s share in the total market. Brim’s market share has dropped from .6% to .1% in the past two years and its market share is expected to decline to 1.% within the next eighteen months. Second, Maxwell House must decide on a long-term direction for Brim.

III. FINAL DECISION

IV. ANALYSIS

A.) PRODUCT

Background of Coffee

According to legend, coffee was discovered in Ethiopia when goatherds noticed their flocks stayed awake all night after feeding on coffee leaves and berries. By 100, coffee had reached Arabia. Before its use as a beverage 700 years ago, coffee was a food, then a wine, and then a medicine. Coffee moved from Arabia to Turkey during the 1500’s and to Italy in the early 1600’s. Coffeehouses sprang up throughout Europe in the 1600’s and became meeting places for discussion. Coffee came to America in the 1660’s and coffee growing was introduced to Brazil in the 1700’s.

There are three general groups of coffee-Brazils, Milds, and Robustas. Most coffees are named for the region where it is grown or the port from which it is shipped. The active ingredient in coffee is caffeine. Caffeine is a substance that acts as a stimulant on the nervous system. Research has shown that prolonged use of coffee in substantial quantities may lead to certain heart disease and increase the risk of potential heart attacks.

Market

In the mid and late 170’s the overall coffee market was in decline. The coffee market had many characteristics of a mature market. Total coffee volume had plateaued and was beginning to fall; however, the total decaffeinated segment was expected to double by 180. General Foods acquired Sanka, the first decaffeinated brand of coffee in 1. Sanka held a % share of the decaffeinated market, but it was vulnerable because of one major weakness poor taste. Research showed the main reason people were unwilling to switch to decaffeinated coffee was its perceived poor taste, and in particular, Sanka. General Foods felt that to protect their stronghold on the decaffeinated market they had to employ a defense strategy. The chosen strategy was to use innovation to develop a product that operated in the same decaffeinated niche as Sanka but made up for it’s taste shortfall.

Product Defined

According to Kotler, a product is defined as anything that can be offered to satisfy a need or want. Occasionally, other terms are used in place of product such as offering or solution. Decaffeinated coffee was offered as a solution to customers who required the taste of coffee without the ill effects of caffeine.

Brim’s Position

Product Characteristics

Product Life Cycle

Four points must be asserted to say that a product has a life cycle (1) products have a limited life; () product sales pass through distinct stages, each posing different challenges, opportunities, and problems to the seller; () Profits rise and fall at different stages of the product life cycle, and (4) products require different marketing, financial, marketing, purchasing, and human resource strategies in each stage of their life cycle. A product’s life cycle typically portrays its sales history following a distinct bell shaped curve. This bell shaped curve can further be divide into four stages introduction, growth, maturity, and decline. Branded products can have either a long or short-run product life cycle.

Brim is in the mature-decline stage of its life cycle. The Life-Cycle pattern it most clearly resembles is the Growth-Slump-Maturity pattern.

Competition

During every pioneer’s product life cycle, the product will enter a competitive cycle. In this cycle, competitors will enter and market share leadership and prices will fall. Initially the pioneer is the sole supplier with 100% of the production capacity and sales. This was the case with Sanka in the decaffeinated segment from 1 until the 160’s when the competitive penetration stage began. Brim was introduced with the specific intent of holding off the competitors increasing interest in the decaffeinated market. Nestle introduced its brand of freeze-dried decaffeinated coffee at the same time as Brim was introduced. Taster’s Choice Decaffeinated was a major competitor and Proctor & Gambel’s High Point is already competing with Brim in select markets.

B.) Price

The Boston Consulting Group Model portfolio planning approach designated the Maxwell House Division a cash cow minus. What does it mean? It means Maxwell House should harvest. The objective of harvesting is to increase the SBU (Brim)’s short-term cash flow regardless of long-term effect. General Foods needs to cash in on Brim before it becomes a Dog. Some of the indicators of harvesting are as follows

ɨ Business is in a stable or declining market - The total US coffee market is at a 0 year low, and the decaffeinated market has stagnated for years

ɨ Business has small market share and building it would be too costly or it has a respectable share but defending it is not economically justified

ɨ The business is losing money or produces only modest profits

ɨ Sales decline would not be precipitous if support is reduced

ɨ The firm has better use for freed funds

ɨ The business is not a major component of the firm’s portfolio

ɨ The business contributes little to other entities within the organization in terms of synergies, sale stability, and prestige

Harvest

One of the components of harvest is to reduce cost at a faster rate than any potential drop in sales, resulting in an increase in the company’s positive cash flow. Reducing costs include limiting investments in advertising, new plants and equipment, and R&D.

In addition to trimming product costs, Maxwell House can also consider changing Brim’s price. Questions that Maxwell House should ask include would a price cut attract new users? If so, should the list price be lowered, or should prices be lowered through price specials, volume or early-purchase discounts, freight cost absorption, or easier terms? Or would it be better to raise the price to signal higher quality? Some of the objectives that Maxwell House might consider are as follows

ɨ Survival

ɨ Profit Maximization

ɨ Revenue Maximization

ɨ Sales Growth Maximization penetration pricing

ɨ Market Skimming Maximization inelastic demand situations

ɨ Product-Quality Leadership price/quality relationship

ɨ Other Pricing Objectives e.g., cost recovery, social pricing

Strategic Pricing Alternatives

After Maxwell House has decided on a pricing objective, it will then decide on whether to increase or reduce the price of Brim. The following lists the eight strategic alternatives

STRATEGIC OPTIONS CONSEQUENCES

Maintain price and perceived quality Smaller market share

Lowered profitability

Raise price and perceived quality Smaller market share

Maintained profitability

Maintain price and raise perceived quality Smaller market share

Short-term decline in profitability

Long-term increase in profitability

Cut price partly and raise perceived quality Maintained market share

Short-term decline in profitability

Long-term maintained profitability

Cut price fully and maintain perceived quality Maintained market share

Short-term decline in profitability

Cut price fully and reduce perceived quality Maintained market share

Maintained margin

Reduced long-term profitability

Maintain price and reduce perceived quality Smaller market share

Maintained margin

Reduced long-term profitability

Introduce an economy model Some cannibalization but higher total volume

Any price change can affect customers, competitors, distributors, and suppliers and may provoke government reaction as well. Customers’ often question the motivation behind price changes. A price cut can be interpreted in the following ways

ɨ The item is about to be replaced by a new model

ɨ The item is faulty and is not selling well

ɨ The item is in financial trouble and may not stay in business to supply future parts

ɨ The price will be reduced even more; it pays to wait

ɨ The quality has been reduced

A price increase, which would normally deter sales, may carry some positive meanings to customers The item is “hot” and might be unobtainable unless it is bought soon, or the item represents an unusually good value.

Customers are more price-sensitive to expensive products and/or are products they buy frequently, while they hardly notice higher prices on low-cost items they buy infrequently. Coffee is generally a weekly purchase. In addition, some buyers are less concerned with the product’s price than they are with the total costs of obtaining, operating, and servicing the product over its lifetime. A seller can charge more than competitors and still get the business if the customer can be convinced that the product’s total lifetime costs are lower.

When contemplating a price change, Brim also has to worry about their competitors’ reactions as well as the customers’ reactions. Competitors are most likely to react where the number of firms in the industry is small, the product is homogeneous, and the buyers are highly informed. The decaffeinated coffee market is of such a nature. The challenge is to read the competitors’ mind by using inside and outside sources of information. Because there are several competitors such as P&G’s High Point and Nestle’s Tester’s Choice, Brim must estimate each of the competitor’s likely reaction.

C.) Brim-Advertising & Promotion

Promotion Objectives

Kotler’s three promotional objectives are to inform, persuade, or remind. Brim’s advertising shifted from informing (“The first strong coffee without caffeine”) to reminding (taste enjoyment). The message kept changing, from a rational appeal (caffeine concerns) to emotional appeal (husband reward), creating confusion for consumers. Further, Brim’s level of advertising spending shrunk during the 170’s and during several periods was cut altogether, showing a lack of commitment from parent company Maxwell House. When a product is introduced, it should receive high levels of spending to develop brand loyalty. Brim received an initial influx of advertising dollars, then, nothing. As a result, consumers never developed a clear perception or loyalty to Brim.

Target Market

In the 170’s, the coffee buyer was predominantly the woman of the household and Brim’s advertising should have been directed at her. However, from 17-178, Brim only advertised once in Good Housekeeping, arguably the most popular women’s magazine published. Obviously Brim was not always reaching its target market. The informative/reminder ads were not strong enough to convince consumers to buy Brim. A persuasive approach may have been more effective.

Industry Advertising Spending Levels

Brim and Sanka combined spent more in advertising than Tasters Choice Regular and Decaffeinated and Nescafe and Nescafe Decaffeinated but as their declining market share illustrates, their message was not effective. Sanka’s advertising levels increased at the expense of Brim. Taster’s Choice, even though its spending was less, could receive more impact for its advertising dollar because both brands could be advertised together since the brand names were the same and the packaging was similar. Taster’s Choice Decaffeinated was borrowing a “known” name, Taster’s Choice, so the name recognition was quicker than for a new to the world product such as Brim. Nestle and Proctor and Gamble could succeed because of the synergies each enjoyed, particularly in sales, distribution and marketing.

Product Life Cycle

Brim is in the mature stage of its product life cycle. During the mature stage, sales promotion becomes the most important promotional tool, followed by advertising, then personal selling. Advertising builds brand loyalty and creates a reason for consumers to buy the product. Promotion offers an incentive to buy, and weakens brand loyalty. In the 170’s, coffee was purchased weekly, so advertising was crucial. Promotions will cause some consumers to shift brands, but generally, this type of consumer will buy whatever brand is offering the best deal. The loyal brand buyers will not usually switch brands because of a promotion. Developing loyal customers may be accomplished through consistency in the message, medium of advertising and levels of spending.

Trade Promotion

Sixty percent of Brim’s sales volume was on deal. Brim should decrease this incentive to cut costs. However, wholesalers and retailers have grow accustomed to receiving these incentives and they could stop buying Brim, especially since there are many other competitors to buy from. Brim should gradually decrease the amount sold on deal and instead offer less expensive quarterly trade promotions. High Point was effective with its distribution even though High Point used a low percentage of pull promotions.

Current Advertising Dilemmas

Alan Laker and his staff are faced with several advertising concerns. First, should Brim reintroduce national advertising, second, how much should they spend, and third, what message would be the most effective.

5 M’s of an Integrated Marketing Program

Brim’s management team should consider the 5 M’s before embarking on an advertising strategy mission, money, message, media and measurement.

Mission

Since Brim is in the mature stage of its life cycle, the company should not increase spending on advertising or promotion. Brim’s goal should be to keep its sales from declining too quickly, maintain its market share, limit its costs and generate as much revenue as possible to recoup its investment. Kotler discusses five factors to consider when setting an advertising budget the product’s stage in its life cycle, its market share, competition and clutter, advertising frequency, and product substitutability. Brim has a declining market share, faces competitors with deeper pockets and better advertising messages, has advertised inconsistently, and decaffeinated coffee has many substitutes. Brim should adopt a strategy of guerilla attacks on its competition instead of launching a full-scale national advertising campaign. Brim would keep its costs to a minimum and yet be able to pick strategic markets.

Setting a Promotion Budget

Of Kotler’s four methods of setting a promotion budget, the affordable method or the objective and task method may help Brim generate as much cash as possible before it is discontinued. Brim would either spend what it could afford or spend a set amount to achieve certain objectives. Since Brim is now a market follower, the percent of sales method would cost too much and the competitive parity method is not feasible because Brim’s competition is willing to spend more on advertising and has deeper pockets. Brim should spend….

Brim’s Message

Brim should choose a message of….but then keep the advertising message the same over a period of time. Brim’s packaging should remain the same. A change in packaging would confuse consumers, reduce credibility and changing the packaging is an expense Brim could avoid.

Brim’s niche is the premium tasting decaffeinated coffee market. Brim should consider distributing sample packets of its coffee to target markets, such as an insert in the Sunday newspaper. Consumers drink coffee, especially in the morning while reading the paper.

Brim should hire a new ad agency with fresh ideas because its advertising using Benton & Bowles has not improved. When High Point was being test marketed, it used the same advertising, packaging and media plan in each test market, creating a consistent approach.

Media

Brim should advertise in mediums where they can reach their target market. A combination of print advertising (ladies magazines such as Good Housekeeping and Ladies Home Journal), prime time and daytime (soap operas).

Measurement

V. RECOMMENDATIONS

The Maxwell House division of General Foods has three strategic choices for Brim coffee in fiscal year 17. The first choice is to do nothing. This strategy will allow natural market forces to determine the fate of Brim under its previously assigned brand role. Which is? The second alternative for the Maxwell House division is to engage in a hold strategy. This strategy aims to maintain Brim’s market share through its desired role. The third option is to engage in a complete retrenchment strategy in an effort to pull Brim off the shelf.

Do Nothing

Prior to17, Brim’s advertising strategies were ineffective in communicating and emphasizing its taste benefits and other attributes. At the forefront of this problem was a continuous shift in advertising strategies from year to year. This lack of continuity eventually forced the Maxwell House division to cut its advertising and promotional expenditures for Brim. For the “do nothing” strategy, minimal advertising and promotion means cost effective management for a product that is rapidly losing market share. Another benefit is that resources once allocated to Brim could be used for other brands.

The “do nothing” strategy is at the mercy of the market. Brim could make a fantastic turnaround, linger on like slow death, or quickly reach a point where carrying the product is no longer feasible. It is this uncertainty that is least appealing. Even with Brim’s brand role of market segmentation and as a compliment to Sanka, the marketing mix could not effectively be implemented under this scenario.

Hold

The hold and protect strategy merits some consideration from the standpoint of maintaining whatever market share is left for Brim. Typically, a hold strategy is appropriate for a product that is yielding substantial positive cash flows. Brim has a negative cash flow, but its desired role for fiscal year 17 will play a key role in creating enough momentum to maintain market share for the short run. The desired role for Brim is to “present the broadest decaffeinated appeal to caffeine-concerned coffee drinkers by complimenting Sanka’s health emphasis with a taste-emphasis positioning.” One benefit of attempting to maintain market share is that it can buy additional time for valuable market research for long term strategic planning. In addition, a hold strategy can force Brim to evaluate its current strategies by refocusing or refining its desired segmentation role.

Harvest

The third alternative strategy is harvest. Harvesting involves a decision to eventually withdraw from a business by implementing a program of continuous cost retrenchment. The elimination of research and development expenditures, advertising and other budgetary elements are characteristics of a harvesting strategy taking place. Generally, this strategy is appropriate for SBU’s or businesses that have lost market dominance and are experiencing poor or negative cash flows. One of the main objectives of a harvest strategy is to slash costs at a rate faster than any potential drop in sales. One disadvantage to harvesting Brim is competitors would have the opportunity to absorb Brims .1% share of the total coffee market.

VI. TEAM RECOMMENDATION

The Maxwell House division should harvest Brim for several key reasons. First, Maxwell House had already been practicing a retrenchment strategy when it decided to cut advertising expenditures for six months in 176. In 177, a similar action was taken. Market growth stagnation and a confusing advertising campaign were two primary reasons for this cut in advertising. By 178, advertising was almost at zero. In summary, the outlook for market growth is stagnant and advertising dollars have been drastically cut for the past three years. Brim’s future is weak and a harvest strategy should be accelerated.

Brim and the Boston Consulting Group Model

Where does Brim get plotted in the BCG model? Maxwell House division, not Brim, is a “cash cow minus;” however, Brim possesses all the characteristics of a “dog.” Brim is not expected to turnaround its poor market growth rate, and it has little or no chance to make a profit. In the BCG model, it is suggested that “dogs” be phased down or withdraw.

Mature Marketing Strategies for Brim

Brim is a product that can benefit from strategies developed for use with mature products. We have already concluded that Brim is a weak product from a market share perspective. Management has cut its advertising and its future appears dim. The objective of mature marketing strategies is to try and revive a product’s use and benefit to consumers. A hold strategy is recommended for Brim, and if this strategy is adopted, the following mature marketing initiatives could aid in this effort.

To revive Brim, the Maxwell House division should first attempt to boost sales volume. This can be accomplished in three ways. The first is to attract new nonusers to Brim. The Maxwell House division should explore new packaging, product improvements, wider segmentation strategies or increased promotional initiatives to demonstrate the benefits inherent in Brim. However, the cost involved with this may be prohibitive. Another method of expanding the number of brand users is to enter new markets. For example, Brim could find ways to introduce its benefits to hot cocoa or tea drinkers. A third way of increasing sales volume is to win competitors’ customers. In the Brim case, the key is to bait consumers of Taster’s Choice, Nescafe or High Point to adopt Brim.

Increased usage of a brand is another strategy of expanding volume. Marketers can extol the virtues of Brim as a beverage that can be drunk at any time during the day or night. They may attempt to get users to drink more than one cup per occasion. Here, Brim could experiment with ways to get users to brew ten to twelve cup servings rather than one individual serving per occasion. As an accompaniment to food, Brim can be marketed as a dessert coffee

Despite equal preferences in blind product tests High Point’s packaging and trademark had significant consumer appeal and their advertising copy contained strong tats credentials.

Spanking should not be an acceptable form of discipline. There are many ways to reasonably discipline a child. There are many reasons hitting a child is wrong. Hitting a child teaches them to become a hitter. Hitting a child teaches them to be a hitter because children learn behaviors and attitudes through observation and imitation of their parent’s actions for good or ill. It is the responsibility of a parent to set an example of wisdom, temperance and empathy when it comes to a child discipline. There has also been extensive research in studies done by the “natural kid project” that there is a direct correlation between corporal punishment in childhood and aggressive or violent behavior in teenage and adult years. It is the responsibility of a responsible parent to know and exemplify humane reasonable disciplinary actions. Spanking is seen to be a quick fix for some parent’s .It often takes a lot more effort, time and love to sit down with that child and talk. If talking does not produces acceptable results there are other alternatives. Many see spanking as an act of aggression, although many spankers excuse it as a natural form of discipline. Children are human beings also therefore they should be treated as so. Lashing out with a hand or belt is a behavior that should not be accepted. A parent cannot rationally justify why a child is exhibiting the same behavior such as hitting when they are in school or in public. Spanking is barbaric and inhumane. Physical punishment gives the unfair message that “Might makes right’ that it is acceptable to hurt someone else, when they are smaller and less powerful than you are. A child learns that it is ok to mistreat younger or smaller children. Often, when the child becomes an adult he feels little compassion for those less fortunate than he is, and he fears those that are more powerful. This often may hinder establishing any healthy relationships that are essential to an emotionally fulfilling life. Hitting children interferes with establishing and keeping a positive bond with parents. Spanking often makes a child withdrawn, Spanking children also teaches them to be timid and anti social. These, are some of the many reasons why hitting your child, as a form of punishment should never be an option.

hould be prohibited legally. Spanking distracts a child from learning how to resolve conflict in an effective and humane way. When you make a child afraid they stop learning. Often when a child has been consistently spanked they become preoccupied with feelings of anger and thoughts of revenge. This is what deprives a child of learning from the experience. Spanking deprives a child from learning more effective methods of solving the problem at hand. Thus a punished child learns little about how to handle or prevent similar situations in the future. Spanking not only works as a quick fix, it is not conducive to long-term results. A child learns that, I get hit; when I do something to make mommy or daddy mad. I am afraid. The child does not consciously think I am being spanked because, I ran in the store away from mommy and daddy. This is why spanking is not a useful or productive practice. There are other ways to punish a child, which does not consist of violence. Which include, talking to your child about the behavior that they are exhibiting, sending your child to their room, suspension of activities, grounding to the house, extra house choirs. There are many ways to discipline your child without physically hitting them. Small spankings eventually lead to larger ones. The bigger the child the more force you have to use and eventually the child will fight back. This is just one of the many reasons that you should not hit your child.

Hitting a child as a form of punishment interferes with the bond between parent and child. It is also not human nature to feel love towards someone who hurts you. The true sprit of cooperation that all parents’ want, can arise only through a strong bond based on mutual feelings of love and respect from child and parent. This cannot be achieved when a child feels helpless and not loved. Although, many parents disagree, a child has no self-actualization They are in their developing stages, it is a parents duty to help that child form his outlook on himself and others around him. When a child is spanked it can lead that child to think negatively about himself .A child can not distinguish right from wrong internally, simply because they are a child. It is the job of the parent to communicate what ever the problem is to the child. Spanking is not productive when it comes to adequately and successfully teaching a child not to display a behavior again. Many children become withdrawn when spanked. Children replace learning with fear when spanked. Children that are withdrawn when spanked are more prone to be depressed in later years according to Dr. Francine Vida Howard university school of psychology. Children who are spanked often tend to hold thoughts of dislike in their unconscious, but in term spanking will bring this back to that Childs conscious, which could lead to a very unstable and very angry child. This in no way creates a healthy relationship for parent and child .A parent can never make hitting a rationale to a child. Because, a child only understands the pain. Long-term spanking will not teach constructive ways of handling problems it will only drive a child to fear a parent. There by pushing a child away from the relationship. Many parents do not understand that angry teenagers do not come over night. Anger and frustration, which cannot be safely expressed by a child many times become stored inside. When anger has been accumulating for many years it can come back as a shock to parents, whose child now feels strong enough to express this rage. Physical punishment may appear to some, to produce “good behavior” in the early years, but more often at a very high price paid by parents and society as a whole, as the child enters adolescence and early adulthood. Physical punishment can be life changing in many negative ways for a child. Spanking should never be practiced in a home by responsible a loving parent who has the long-term interest of that child in mind.

Many parents argue with the fact that spanking is not productive to the rearing of a child. George Johnson of Ohio wrote on Christian chat yahoo, “there is no discipline”. Parents should beat their child whenever they feel it is just. These thoughts are wrong and l this is wrong. Beating a child leads to long term resentment and anger in return not fixing the problem for the good of the child only making them angry and confused at why you are hitting them and saying that you love them. Hitting is a form of anger and it should be stopped. I feel that Mr. Johnson is wrong because beating a child is not an act of discipline it is an act of control and disrespect. Ms. Bogart of YouDebate.com said “the whole reason for discipline is to put fear in a child for breaking a rule ect. The easiest way to do this is through spanking .do something wrong feel the pain Ms Bogart is wrong, because spanking a child for punishment is wrong any form of discipline, should be used as a form of teaching not putting fear or humiliation in the mind of a child wrong. I believe that when a child is fearful the process of learning stop’s. Therefore it is not productive to the rearing of that child. Mr. Marvin Myon of the Claire gospel center in Detroit Michigan was reported to have said to the associated press, that physical punishment is the best and most effective deterrents of misbehavior .I do not agree with Mr. Myon. because physical punishment only promotes hitting in a since that you are not teaching the child a valuable lesson when you hit them for a mistakes .children do not think long term as a adult might children can only process what is happening at hand. When a child is spanked I do not feel as though hitting teaches not to do it again. Hitting teaches a child that mommy hit’s me when she is mad or I made mommy mad I am afraid that she will hit me. Hitting a child is an act of violence by an uncontrollable parent. A parent should be mature enough to think of a more productive way to teach a child other than hitting. Although many parents agree with spanking a child I feel as though they are blinded by the fact that hitting will rear bad results in the future. Hitting a child never is an act of love. I feel as though it should be banned.

Why Is Social Drinking Taboo?

In 16 an article appeared in the Los Angeles Times promoting positive drinking. The author, Stanton Peel, suggested that schools should teach kids “the truth about drinking” (Peele “Tell children”). He argued that it is wrong to teach children that alcohol is completely bad when many people drink it for pleasure, and everyone does not do so in excess. The message that abusing alcohol has many negative effects ranging from liver disease to levels of brain damage is well preached throughout schools, on television, and in the news. However, studies also show some positive health benefits as well as emotional benefits that drinking alcohol in moderation can have.

In a society that no longer promotes abstinence but now parades safe sex and contraceptives, how can moderate drinking still be regarded as bad? Could it be that the negative aspects of alcohol consumption outweigh those of sexual activity? While possible, this is more than likely not the case. The resulting consequence of alcohol consumption can have both positive and negative elements. How then can so many people label all alcohol consumption as bad? More than likely these people against moderate social drinking deny that moderation exists. It is possible that they feel that people cannot control themselvesthat humans are merely animals driven by pleasure and personal drive and ultimately incapable of being responsible.

The fact that alcohol abuse has many negative effects ranging from liver disease to levels of brain damage is well known in the United States, and much like its negative effects, the measure of benefits of alcohol are slowly being realized. Mark Keller, a research specialist for the Center of Alcohol Studies at Rutgers University notes that “the first effect of a moderate amount of drink is actually stimulatingnot necessarily relaxingand my allow more efficient rather than less efficient mental performance” (Keller 86-87). While the debate on negative and positive effects of alcohol, it is unreasonable to say that simply for health reasons, alcohol consumption is completely bad and should be banned.

What is the origin of this negative view of all alcohol? In another article, Peele studied different views of alcohol and impact of these views on drinking practices, and attempted to answer this question. In his study, Peele found “the dominant contemporary vision of alcohol in the United States is that alcohol (a) is primarily negative and has exclusively hazardous consequences, (b) leads frequently to uncontrollable behavior, and (c) is something that young people should be warned against” (Peele “Promoting Positive Drinking”). The idea behind alcohol being evil began with 150 to 00 years ago with the temperance movement. Peele says, “although this idea has varied in its intensity since then . . . the idea that alcohol is bad takes a number of forms. For the following reasons, people during this time period believed that alcohol should be totally eradicated from society.

· Alcohol is an addictive substance whose use inevitably leads to increased, compulsive, and uncontrollable use.

· Alcoholism underlies most, indeed practically all, modern social problems (unemployment, wife and child abuse, emotional disorders, prostitution, and so on).

· Alcohol conveys no discernable social benefits. (Promoting Positive Drinking)

Most important to note is the second reason that Peele found. While this attribute refers to alcoholism, this view clearly often carries over to all alcohol consumption. As a major cause of many of the social problems of the day, alcoholism rightfully holds this view. However, this is where many people make a theoretical leap. Since pleasure plays a role in both ordinary and problematic drinking, the message becomes conveyed that drinking must in general be bad. Certain religions, for instance, forbid all alcohol consumption. In Christianity, there are many Biblical references about drinking alcohol. The Bible gives some warnings about “being drunk with wine wherein is excess” (Ephesians 518) but then says, “wine that maketh glad the heart of man” (Psalm 10415). It also notes “Who hath woe? . . . who hath babbling? Who hath wounds, without cause? Who hath redness of eyes,” and it speaks of “they that tarry long at the wine” (Proverbs ). Moslem and Mormon societies also formally rule out all alcohol use (Promoting Positive Drinking). In a study on substance abuse in Israel, Jordan and Palestine, scientists investigated substance abuse among Christian, Moslem, and Druze adolescents. Moslems belong to a culture “which theoretically condemns the use of alcohol beverages in any form” (Weiss 178). When asked about their abstention to alcohol, the greatest response from Moslem adolescents was that “religion is intolerant of alcohol use” (Weiss 10). The common view is that all religion is completely against alcohol, when that is simply not the case. In addition, many religions use alcohol in religious ceremonies. In Judaism, there is a season where one is commanded to drink to excess. Religion can not be the source behind the view that all alcohol consumption is bad.

Mark Keller states about the discovery of alcohol that even among the early religious community, “men found alcoholic beverages to be goodas food, as drink, as medicine.” He also says that this safe conclusion “is matched by the certainty that they found the same beverages to be evil” (Keller 81). The underlying assumption in this malevolent view of alcohol is that anything found to be good could also be bad in excess as with alcohol. Although this assumption seems quite commonsensical, the heart of this is really saying that humans have essentially no self-control and must be told something is bad if it can be misused. Ultimately, anyone who views alcohol in moderation as bad must hold a part of this view.

Common knowledge is that moderate drinking has positive as well as negative attributes. Whether social benefits or physical detriments, alcohol consumption is definitely not completely bad in moderation. Often religion is used for the reason why people are completely against alcohol. However, even religion does not completely abolish drinking in moderation. There is essentially only one reason to hold a completely negative view of alcohol. One must feel in part that humans are merely animals incapable of self-control and rational decision. This is the true source of the taboo surrounding alcohol. What makes alcohol so taboo in society is not the consumption of it, it is the assumption that the users will not be able to control themselves.

From the Salem witch trials to the civil rights movement, we as Americans have never been accepted the way we are. There will always be someone judging you, either its yourself or your arch enemy. We buy the clothes that are in style because we think it might make us look cool in the eyes of other and maybe it does but we still have to work to be accepted. Jocks, rockers and rappers all experience different high schools. What about that nerd that eats lunch all by himself in a corner because no one wants to socialize with them as it might harm their reputation? Rappers and rockers all hang out at different ends of the school while the straight and gay avoid each other at all costs. Why not accept each other for who we are? If this really was a society in which we could live as we wanted and not have to have the newest line of fashion or the like one type of music this place we call America would be very different. It is not impossible to achieve but it is inevitable. Maybe if we all would not care what the other boy or girl at school thought about your raggedy shirt, then would we get there.

At last, by gaining the experience in information technology and business administration I will be able to pursuit my dream. My dream of opening up my own auto parts business in Puerto Rico. In Puerto Rico, there are companies like Advance Auto Parts and Pep Boys, but they are have only concentrated in the major cities. Puerto Rico is a super town country. My objective is to establish my auto parts business towards the smaller towns of Puerto Rico, which are located in the middle of the island. I have made these decisions because I grew up around that area. I remembered how inconvenient was to the people get the appropriate parts, accessories, and tools that they needed to get the job done. The opportunity is there, and I will take advantage of it.

In conclusion, I am visualizing myself after two years with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. This article describes how an organization can

promote or discourage innovation. It depicts how

establishing an environment that procreates new ideas

and implementing them, enables a company to achieve

strategic goals. It states that laying the groundwork

for innovation is the initial stage in creating this

type of environment. It further notes that friction

will be created in the foundation. Therefore,

managing conflicts is the significant part of achieving

the strategic goals.

The article discloses how laying the groundwork is

an instrumental part of innovation. The first hurdle to

cross in innovation is getting past the thought of one

person working alone can generate creativity and

inspiration. In today’s environment, this type of

thought hampers innovation. The article states that

forming teams is a good way of laying the foundation

because highly innovative people will usually have many

perspectives on problem solving. Groups will collect

great ideas and combine them in an unusual way. The

different thinking styles of the group generally

contribute to the ability of thinking outside of the

box. successful groups are formed of people with

diverse backgrounds, which have the ability to create

friction.

Once the teams based on differences are formed, the

act of managing conflicts for innovation is then

introduced. This part of the innovation process is

extremely important because groups with diverse

backgrounds usually result I friction. However,

friction does not have to be a bad thing. In fact, it

can help an organization stay on the cutting edge

of its industry. Nonetheless, what is required is

channeling that friction in the right direction to fuel

an organizations innovation. Having many topics is one

way of managing conflicts because it generates

discussion and produces original ideas. Leadership

style is another way of managing conflicts. It is noted

that leaders with a command and control style usually

make team members feel powerless. This style is

ineffective because energy is diverted to power

struggles and attaining personal goals instead of

achieving a common goal. The best style of leadership,

as depicted by the writer, in an innovative culture is

one that creates a balance of power. It is understood

that the ultimate decision lies with the CEO, however

each member of the management team is responsible for

defined areas. This style keeps all the members

involved and committed to the common goal.

An organization with an innovative culture in

today’s market place is usually successful. It

incorporates all the members of the team. It gives them

the sense of being listen to and belonging. Once the

foundation is laid, an atmosphere of friction is

generally created. It is then important for the

organization to manage the friction for innovation.

Successfully managing it can create an excitement of an

effective innovated organization.
