IDENTIFY, AND THEN COMMENT UPON, THE VARIETY OF NARRATIVE TECHNIQUES, IN THE HANDMAID’S TALE.
Narrative techniques are the different ways in which a writer tells their story.
Ask yourself the following questions about how the story of The Handmaid’s Tale is told
Is it all first-person narration? What are the advantages of this technique for the reader? Is it autobiographical? Is it genuine autobiography, or fictive autobiography? Is the story told in the same way all the way through? Does the story flow in a straightforward, easily understood style? Are we told the name of our narrator immediately? Does the story emerge in a fragmented, bit-by-bit, way? Could it be deliberately confusing? Are there different narrators? Are we allowed into the narrator’s own thoughts? Do we discover much about the narrator’s past? How? What id the effect of using flashbacks?
POINTS TO CONSIDER
· Is the first person narration significant? What is the effect of it for the reader?
· Why are the epigraphs important? Why are they there? What do they add?
· Does the novel begin in a clear, easily understood way? Or, is there some deliberate confusion (narrative puzzle emerges / many ideas of time are presented both the recent and distant past / effect is to place the story in the recent future)?
· How are the ‘Night’ sections (chapters 1,7 & 18) different from other parts of the novel? Think of what Offred does and why.
· The use of time shifts and flashbacks
· The fragmentation of the storytelling, it is only revealed bit by bit
· The comments made by Offred about the act of storytelling itself C7, C & (directly addresses the audience for the first time)
· The ‘double’ motifs see class notes 6--0
· The Historical Notes at the end of the book explain why Offred’s story has been told in such a fragmented way. It was pieced together, from Offred’s original tape recordings by the academic professors. This explains, and justifies, the fragmented style of storytelling to the reader. Of course, this style of storytelling, of only partial disclosure, suits Atwood’s purpose as a storyteller, of presenting the story gradually. Also, Atwood deliberately wants to show Offred as a distressed and confused narrator; the fragmented storytelling, where Offred cannot concentrate on the dreadful present for too long without recourse to the preferable past, reinforces the idea of Offred’s distress. Therefore, Atwood’s narrative style aids her presentation of Offred as a distressed and discontented woman.
NIGHT
Night recurs as a heading seven times. It always signals ‘time out’ when Offred’s life is not under public scrutiny, and when she can escape into her own private world of memory and desire
TIME SHIFTS AND FLASHBACKS
Mostly within the ‘Night’ sections where the flashbacks are most sustained
The narrative switches often, between the past, present and distant past, juxtaposing past and present, through Offred’s memories.
Creates a continuing sense of the physical and emotional confusion Offred feels because she has to escape her present
The ubiquitous past brings happiness, comfort and power to keep fighting, but it also brings despair, longing and loneliness EFFECT IS to increase the reader’s empathy for Offred as they are all emotions that we can relate to
By using memory, we see Offred ‘feel’ ‘stream of consciousness’ technique seeks to replicate real thought processes and jumps from one subject to another
Like a palimpsest, a parchment that is scraped clean to be used again, traces of Offred’s original identity and beliefs still exist beneath her Handmaid guise
THE FRAGMENTATION OF THE STORYTELLING
A discontinuous, spasmodic narrative, with frequent time shifts & short scenes effect is
to create narrative puzzle / reflect Offred’s confusion & distress / represents the complex ways that memory works, where the present moment is always pervaded / affected by other times & places
The story shifts abruptly from one scene to another, from present to past time so the narrator’s present situation and past history are only gradually revealed
We have to piece together and reconstruct the story
The story starts in a confusing manner with unfamiliar surroundings, although the setting does become more familiar
Offred’s story pieces together the voice of the powerless and oppressed in Gilead it is only revealed bit by bit
THE COMMENTS MADE ABOUT THE ACT OF STORYTELLING
A self-conscious narrator who is aware of the limitations of narrating stories and the human need for telling stories
Storytelling (onto tape) is the only possible gesture against the silences of death and of history it is an act of rebellion in itself
DOUBLES MOTIF
IN LITERATURE, A MOTIF IS A RECURRING, DOMINANT IDEA
Double life - both her physical existence and in her memories
Two identities Handmaid and being an individual in her own right wife, mother, daughter
Two names birth names and her Gileadean patronynic
Offred & Ofglen look alike as they shop together
Characters have their own counterparts Nick and Luke; Moira and Ofglen; Offred and the previous Offred

October 0, 00
DESCRIPTION OF INCIDENT
At 1.0 P.M. on October 0, 00, our distributor, Mrs. Jenny Huang called and said that our gThe Barbarian Mugsh (BM 040 Model) cannot be accepted. After receiving the call, I went down to the distributor shop and inspected the glass mugs delivered. I found that about 80% of the glass mugs were broken. After checking the delivery truck, I found that the wheels of the delivery truck were still in relatively good condition, except for some sand and scratch marks. The weather is fine that day with little clouds.
After I had finished inspecting the goods and truck at .00 P.M., I arranged for the broken glass mugs to be sent back to our company. I notified Head of Manufacturing Department, Manager Lai Seng Boon to check if there was still spare stock of our gThe Barbarian Mugsh in our inventory that could be sent to Mrs. Huang. I also notified the head of delivery department, Manager Choo Boon Heng, to send another delivery truck to our distributor shop to send the broken glasses back to our factory and to replace them with the new batch of glass mugs. While waiting for the truck to arrive, I apologized to Mrs. Huang and promised that the new batch of glasses would arrive by 5.00 P.M. The truck arrived with the new batch of glasses at 4.0P.M.
By 5.00 P.M. we had finished unloading the new glasses and load the broken glass onto the truck. The remaining glasses, which were fine, were left at the shop.
CAUSES OF INCIDENT
The glass mugs were packed in brown boxes without cushioning. The mugs were found to be arranged in a haphazard manner and the strings used to tie them were of unsuitable material. Nylon strings should have been used instead of polyester threads. It was evident that the proper tying techniques were not used to tie the glass mugs. A single knot was used instead of the double knots. As shown in figure 1.1, you can see the wrong type of knot used to tie the package. Figure 1. shows the correct double knot to be used, for better strength to hold our carton together.
Fig 1.1 Wrong tying method
Fig 1. Correct tying method
It was the peak hour and the road was congested. Thus, our truck driver, Mr. Ang See Chong, in his bid to get the glass mugs to our distributor in the fastest possible time, drove at a higher speed. Moreover, the delivery route from our Tuas factory to our distributorfs shop in 40 Jalan Peminpin, #0-0 Tat An Building, had to pass through rough terrain, full of coarse sand. So, the high speed and jerky movement might have caused the glass mugs to bang into one another and resulted in them breaking.
RECOMMENDATIONS
In order to prevent such an incident from happening again in the future, I have made the following recommendations.
1. Have our packaging executive conduct a training course for our packaging staff about proper packaging procedure and methods. The above incident can be used as a case study for the course.
. Order specially marked and design boxes. These medium size boxes 1 X 1X , which are made of tough corrugated cardboard with wire-stitched seams, are extra durable and weight 1kg each. Each box can safely hold up 5 kg of our goods, about twice the load of our previous brown boxes and help us to track our packages easily. Cushions are also included in the boxes to withstand the jerky movement.

Donnie Darko

Donnie Darko is an intense, complicated movie loaded with hidden messages, comments on human behavior, and insights into the mysteries of life and the possibilities of time travel. On the surface the film is a poppy science culture flick, with white attractive actors and actresses playing roles viewers can look at and link to people within their lives. When one looks deeper into the movie, however, this superficial layer is peeled away revealing themes and ideas about people that are incredibly powerful. There is, however, a unifying theme within the film; people who are trying to live their lives “normal,” fitting into convenient roles that are comfortable versus those who venture out to be themselves. These opposite lifestyles interwoven together really show different ways humans act, and what those actions cause. Why have this dynamic? Is the director trying to say one way to live is better than another? Only the movie can lead us to an answer.
Donnie Darko is an outcast, but not in the conventional way. He has his friends, he lives in a middle to upper class white suburban home, and goes to a private school. These people he surrounds himself with, however, don’t really know who he is. In reality, he is a boy who keeps to himself, constantly drowning in problems with his “disease” and relationship issues with his families. When his life is saved by a six feet tall metal bunny rabbit from the future, Donnie has a choice; he can go on living his just saved life, or he can act out what this rabbit wants him to do. He owes something to this being who rescued him, and this is a chance for him to step out of his normal life and do extreme things. He gets to lash out any emotion he has (which on the surface is none) and make a difference. Donnie wants to change things. He brings up change when discussing Graham Greene’s book and, when walking with Gretchen mutters so she can barely hear him that maybe one day he’ll “change things.” This is his chance to break out of the monotony and be who he really is, which may be a superhero.
Gretchen is another character trying to start a new life, break away from her past. She doesn’t want to be the scared, helpless girl she was when her dad was around. She is not just going to be another person; she too is used to being away from the normal girl mold with her life experiences, and she’s not just going to go back. She is who she is, which is shown by people she’s hardly talked to (the bullies) knowing the history of her mother. She is who she is, and her past is nothing to hide; a trait very few teenage girls exemplify.
Karen, Donnie’s English teacher, is also trying to break herself, as well as her students, away from the cookie cutter way of life and learning. She is paving new way, being the progressive teacher in the conservative school. She presents her students with a controversial book, and forces her students to delve into things. When she is challenged for her actions, she stands strong, even though it eventually costs her job. Is the director trying to say this is the way to live? As who you are and for what you believe? If so he is not shy about showing the possible drawbacks from this; and repercussions from those who do not live that way.
Kitty Farmer, quite possibly the most annoying character in a movie ever, exemplifies the idea of living “the way you should” just because it is the thing to do. She is, in both ideals and style, straight out of the 150’s. She believes in good Christian upbringing and lifestyle, and doesn’t approve of anything out of the norm. Kitty, along with the help of Jim Cunningham, provides the second way of living the director is trying to compare Donnie, Gretchen, and Karen to. Jim Cunningham is an even more extreme version of Kitty, but his “normal” lifestyle is proven false.
After looking at these characters, it is the scenes between them that show the dynamic the director is trying to compare. There are many scenes involving the characters that not only show different ways to live, but how hard it is for them to coincide. Donnie Darko is in Kitty Farmer’s class when she wants to do an exercise inspired by Jim Cunningham’s video. There are two words written on the chalkboard; Fear and Love. Every situation that is presented to the class is supposed to be placed on the board, near either word. When Kitty asks Donnie to do this, he brings up a problem with the exercise, saying “you can’t just lump things into categories, things aren’t that simple.” Kitty replies with “the life line is divided that way” Donnie “Life isn’t that simple.” There is not a more obvious scene where the director makes the distinct difference of these two types of lifestyles. He again, however, doesn’t make it obvious which he is saying is better (if any).
Another great scene for recognizing this difference involves a character that is not very prominent in the movie, but in everyday life. This involves Karen and the principle of the high school, an authority figure hired to promote a normal, bland, commonplace life. When Karen is discussing how he doesn’t have a clue about these kids she mentions that “we are losing them to this prescribed nonsense,” showing her contempt for the normal system. His only reply is “I’m sorry that you have failed,” turning all responsibility of his own into her mistakes, he hasn’t done anything out of the norm. This in charge position is symbolized by another character trying to impose a way of living of everyone else, Jim Cunningham.
When there is an assembly for the school by Jim Cunningham promoting his no fear all love lifestyle, there is a chance for the audience to ask questions. Donnie takes this opportunity to “change things;” get the other students and teachers thinking about how living with this monotony is not smart. When Cunningham is challenged, he playes an easy card “You are a troubled and confused young man,” you are not like the rest of us. To which Donnie claims proudly “I am pretty troubled and I’m pretty confused and I’m afraid, actually, really afraid… but I think you’re the fucking antichrist.” He is stating for everyone in the room to know that he is not living like everyone else, he is jumping out of his shell, met with cheers from the crowd.
The director is not showing that being who you are for everyone to know is always best, or right, or easy. Donnie is obviously very troubled, with an extreme diagnosis, and dealing with therapy. Gretchen knows who she is but still gets upset when bullies tease her about her past, and Karen knows she has lost a battle when she loses her job. These people are who they are and unashamed, but paying for it. The characters who are living the way they feel they should, trying to impose their lifestyles on others also aren’t always happy or relaxed. Jim Cunningham breaks down in tears at the end of the film, showing that he is living a lie, and has created an image he doesn’t match; losing his sense of self. Kitty can’t even be there for her daughter at Start Search because she has to defend a man who doesn’t deserve it; she’s imposed his views on so many others now she must live with them herself. She needs to bring herself to ask the most complicating character for help, after doing what she can to bring her down.
Donnie’s mother, Rose, does not fit either lifestyle. She is not living in the traditional, molded way, but not acting out on her emotions as who she really is either. She is that in the middle; the gray area the director covers to show another way to live. Rose loves her son. She misses the Donnie she had and is afraid she might be losing him to his sickness. Towards the beginning of the movie she tries to talk to Donnie but is met by a cold stranger who calls her a bitch. This is obviously upsetting to her, but she is not ready to give up on her son. She visits his doctor, and wants to do anything she can to make him better. She is not the mother to sit quietly or be ashamed of her son. After the incident with Donnie and Mrs. Farmer Rose has an incident with her. During this conversation she not only expresses great concern for her son and what’s happening, but also doesn’t give in to Kitty’s nonsense. Kitty tells her that everyone must be on a path to righteousness and that she is concerned with her abilities as a mother. This doesn’t even faze Rose. She knows she is a good mother and this righteous rhetoric doesn’t mean anything, and it’s certainly not going to save her son. She also shows her willingness to stand up for what she believes at the PTA meeting. She calls Kitty out on her ridiculous notion to ban the Graham Green book, and tries to make Kitty look dumb by asking her if she even knows who that is. There is a time, however, when she does melt back into that mold; when Kitty needs her help.
Rose has a fairly normal life, with Donnie being the only complicating factor. She could choose to ignore him, forget about him, and concentrate on her husband and two daughters, but she doesn’t. She sticks by him even though he tries to push her away, and won’t give up on him. When she is asked to go with her daughter to Star Search she has to make a choice. Donnie has been through a lot lately and his therapist even wants to increase his medication. She goes though, knowing that although she loves Donnie and will be there for him forever, she needs to let him deal with some things on his own. It may be the only way he’ll ever get better. She is living in between the rest of the characters in the movie; not being too her, because it may cause her to lose her sense of self, but not being too molded, because she then just takes the shape of those around her.
Is this what the director is going for? Is he trying to say there is a happy medium? In the end of the movie the characters that lived in convenient boxes already set up for them don’t really end up happy. Jim Cunningham is shown sobbing, knowing he is living a lie, and Kitty can’t be with her daughter for the one thing she has shown any passion for throughout the whole movie. On other side, Gretchen will be alive, never knowing what she has missed, Karen is safe with her job, and Donnie has accomplished something he never has before. He has repaid all those he has loved; finally given something to those who meant something to him. He couldn’t show his mother he loved her, or Gretchen, or even his sisters. He was thankful to Karen, and this was the only way to thank them. They would never know he did it, but it is that peace within him that is important. What Donnie Darko did was heroic, and sprung from two very different emotions; fear and love. His fear for hurting all the people he would hurt if he was to continue living, and his love for them he was unable to show. Are Jim Cunningham and Kitty right? Is that the basis for everything we do? Donnie Darko was a complicated character, but he would have been a great example for any of

As a board member of Dow Corning, I vote in favor of the proposed class action settlement. If you consider the benefits associated with this option they far outweigh the costs of declining the settlement. By late 1, 10,000 suits were filed against manufacturers of breast implants. When you consider the amount of time that would be forfeited in dealing with all the cases individually it is an absolute waste. We as a firm need to bite the bullet and pay for our negligence, regardless if we believe that we were at fault or not. The individual law suits that would undoubtedly last for what would seem like an eternity will promote negative publicity for our entire company and slander our company name. In reality we have more to lose if we don’t accept this settlement. There is also a considerable outside risk associated with prolonged litigation and you have to ask yourself how long you would want the aftermath to linger. The possibility of women opting out should not be given much attention. Past instances show that it is more difficult to enter into a lawsuit on your own rather than being part of a class action suit. The jury could possibly view these individuals as being greedy and possessing thoughts that our generous settlement was not good enough for them. As a member of the board, I strongly recommend the acceptance of this proposed settlement.
Financially it is in our best interest to go ahead with the settlement. The cost of litigations more than doubled from 11 to 1 and in 1 it drastically increased by $571 million. By means of careful planning we have set aside an implant reserve that totals $1.1 billion. The proposed settlement calls for a total fund of $4.5 billion where our contribution would total around $ billion. In hopes that our insurance company will pay for half of our payment we can be expected to pay around $1 billion. Financially the best option for us is to accept the settlement because we already have the necessary funds on reserve. If you add up the costs of each separate lawsuit they would greatly exceed the $ billion settlement. We must also ask ourselves how important this product is to our company. In 170 medical implants accounted for only 1% of our total sales. In 1 we announced we were dropping out of the breast implant business altogether which proves that this product is not worth the risk.
Bearing in mind that the scientific evidence that would be brought to the juror’s attention during trial would not work to our advantage, it gives us even more reason to accept the settlement. The internal memos that have surfaced will show the jury that we were aware of the diminished quality of our products, “When will we learn at Dow Corning that making a product just good enough always leads to products that are not quite good enough?” Although at times we made valiant attempts to correct the defected products, the evidence will work against us.
Everyone at DCC follows the Corporate Code of Conduct that was first introduced in 176 and we have prided ourselves on our high level of ethical behavior. Though some individuals may disagree, DCC acted in the most ethical way possible. We sought ways to reduce potentially harmful products by strengthening the outer walls of the implant to decrease the occurrence of ruptures and actively worked to correct gel bleed in our products. “Safe does not mean risk free”, DCC and the public were aware of the potential risks but their decisions were guided by the benefits. We have an obligation to our customers and the medical community as a whole. It is our responsibility to inform customers and distributors of potential hazards.
The situation that DCC is facing has become all too common over the years. The media continues to do what they do so well; exasperate the public while creating generalized anxiety among the two million women with breast implants. Newspaper headlines and television news reports formed a false picture of our company. The media led the public to believe we were unethical and undaunted by the well-being of our customers. Thus, the media helped create the spark that fueled the flame of thousands of individual lawsuits.
The onslaught of lawsuits against the breast implant community turned the heads of the legal community. Billboards advertised legal services that were aimed directly at women with breast implants. In general attorneys filed suits on a contingency basis in which they would receive anywhere between 5%-40% of their clients compensatory and punitive damages. We could not depend on the jury to rule in our favor because they tend to base their decisions on the sympathy they would possess for the numerous women. On the other hand, the judge presiding over the cases would be more inclined to rule more objectively.
Interest groups had mixed emotions regarding their stance on the DCC controversy. The Public Citizen group fought hard against our company. They obtained internal company studies that suggested that silicone was in fact cancerous. Public Citizen created a “How to Sue” kit which contained potentially incriminating evidence to aid women in their legal battle with DCC. Odd as it sounds several breast cancer support groups backed DCC. They presented evidence that .5% of women with breast implants were in fact satisfied with the product. Some women argued that it was a violation of women’s rights to choose what was best for her body. It is quite difficult to hold doctors accountable for the complications associated with breast implants. Because memories pertaining to specific patient consolations fade over time, the cases against the physicians rarely hold up in court. Driven by the power of money plaintiffs soon realize that doctors lack the financial prowess to fund numerous claims therefore the plaintiffs set their sights on the deeper pockets of large corporations.
Economically the product liability system should function similar to that of an insurance policy like our class action settlement. The established funds will serve to compensate those individuals that were injured. This system provides the manufacturer with an incentive to produce a safer product but unfortunately, some firms are forced to drop out of the industry because of either possible risks or lack of resources.
Politically the product liability system takes on the role of a lottery, which clearly demonstrates the “big gains to few, small costs to many” concept. Many cases show signs of opposing factions but in the end an equitable solution is rarely achieved. Society overall will not benefit from the politically based product liability system and productivity and innovation will be impacted negatively. Prices will ultimately increase and the potential for new and innovative products will drop considerably. In order to protect the overall benefits of society an apposite balance must occur between cooperation and competition.

Body Image and Contemporary Society
We are living in a world filled with a lot of problems. The countries have political issues, families have relationship problems, and human beings have problems about body image. What makes them pay more attention to their outward appearance is the problem that we need to talk about. A person’s body image can be influenced very easily because we all want to look and feel our best; however, we live in a culture in America that puts too much emphasis on physical appearance, and it relies much on a set of ideal standards portrayed by the media. Peer pressure usually is also another influence besides the media.
As society progresses, the media is giving people more pressure to fit in with a standard image. There are numerous of advertisements emphasize thinness as a standard for female beauty and muscular as a standard for male, and often emphasize sexuality and the importance of physical attractiveness in an attempt to sell products. As result, there is growing awareness regarding the pressure women and girls, men and boys are under to appear skinny and muscular. For example, whenever watching TV shows, movies or magazines, there is always something to catch people’s attention to measure their body image. Often commercials only use women who are unhealthily skinny and men who are unrealistically muscular. These are so called “perfect” bodies that we are led to believe we must have in order to be beautiful. All these have led to the destruction of millions of people’s self-esteem, and led to numerous and serious health problems like anorexia and bulimia.
Moreover, according to “Thank Barbie for Britney” the media strongly influences children to act and dress like teens through advertisements and TV programs. Barbie and Britney Spears are leading the sexualization of young girls with their vampy images and attitudes. For example, my seven year old niece already knows how to dress and pose sexily like a super model and celebrity, and she always ask me for a Barbie instead of a baby doll. And her parents can do little to change her ideas because advertisers are selling their products directly to the children on children’s programs.
Peer pressure is also a very strong influence on our body image besides the media. We grow up surrounded by authority figures and peers who tell us the right way and wrong way to look which means that most of us are affected by what they have to say. We give into peer pressure because we want to be liked, to fit in, or because we worry that other people may make fun of us if we dont go along with the group. H.D. the author of “Dying to Be Bigger” is a good example. He starts taking drugs to get stronger and smoking because he wanted to fit in with the “cool” crowd. The idea that everyones doing it influences us to leave our better judgment, or our common sense, behind. For instance, my classmates have tattoos and they think it is cool when you have tattoos. I wanted to be cool, and to be part of them too, so I went to get two tattoos. At that moment I only think I will not be lonely at school, they will like me more after I have tattoos. Peer pressure can be extremely strong and hard to resist, and we can feel pressured to look and feel a certain way.
In fact, we do not live all alone, and human beings are social animals. As such, all of us have a basic desire to fit in and be accepted by other. Thus our society and our peers have very great influence on our body image, and we have to be very careful not to let this influence become so big as to be unhealthy both for women and men.

Damn this is so frickin irritating. I have a research paper I need to do for my English class and I need to research Edgar Allan Poe. Why is all of this absurdity necessary just to view some essays? 50 words? Fine.
McCarthy, whose 168 Democratic presidential campaign helped galvanize opposition to the Vietnam War, has been a staunch opponent of war in Iraq and believes its the result of a military and political system run amok.
The military industry has become too big and its influence on politicians - Republican and Democrat - too strong, McCarthy said. He compared President Bush to the Romans, who, he said, attacked northern Africa because they needed something to do.
McCarthy, renowned for speaking his mind and dishing out quips, blamed President Bush for using religion to wage his war. This is a faith-based war, McCarthy said. The worst thing is faith-based religion.
Regarding terrorism, McCarthy said Americans should look no further than themselves. The United States terrorized black people for 00 years and, later, other countries with its nuclear capability. It isnt exactly front-page news that this Administration has close ties to Big Oil. But even we were bemused to learn that Condoleeza Rice has an oil tanker named after her. Condoleeza Rice (the oil tanker) belongs to multinational oil company Chevron, where Condoleeza Rice (the National Security Advisor) was a board member and stockholder. While this is becoming something of an ethical problem for Rice, it could be an even more embarassing PR problem. Imagine the headlines Condoleeza Rice Spills Millions of Barrels of Oil into Prudhoe Bay. Or, Condoleeza Rice Caught Smuggling Iraqi Oil, Calls for Air Strikes.

Patrick Roy is an awful goalie who lacks all the basics skills of a professional athlete and Role Model. He is arragont short and uncharismatic. I strongly dislike Patrick Roy. Among the athletes who are superior to Patrick are Dick Trickle, Ozzie Newsome, Lavaar Arrington and Boyd Devereaux.
I am very happy Ptrick retired. Due to his retirement I can think of an essay topic that easily allows me to exeed the two hundred and fifty word minimum to get into this area. Without such a fluff topic to utilize I may be scrounging aroung my room for some old college paper and allow somebody to utilize it for reasons that may not be good.
Im not trying to be annoying myself by writing this. Im sure Im not the first person who did not have ready access to an essay while at the Library. This is all original content and at least Im making some sort of reasonable effort.
Even if I am being annoying Patrick Roy is far more annoying than myself. He played for an Avalanche team the exuded arrogance themselves, and has exteremely unfriendly fans.
I once went on a vacation to Denver and went to see a couple of Avs games. The first game was against San Jose. Despite playing a far inferior team, they still insisted on taunting and playing in a very intimidating manner. Of course, they won the game, but they did not win my heart.
The next game was against Detroit. The opponents of the contest were far more evenly matched. Osgood was in net for Detroit and Roy was back in net for Colorado. Roy showed his true colors as he gave up a whopping five goals to Detroit. He simply cannot play against superior competitiion. He pouted and whined to the officials following each goals, and at the conclusion of the game made no effort to congratulate Detroit on their amzing effort.
Its really to bad. Hockey could have used another Gretzky like nice guy, but instead, they had Roy the punk.
I like the Avs a lot more now that they have Abeshier in net. He is jsut as good of a goalie, though not nerarly as full of himself. That comes from the fact that many people doubt his ability to lead the team. They will see this year that he is, in fact, an outstanding net mider.
Thats all I have to say about that.

Women Portrayed In Music Videos
The television entertainment industry has grown dramatically in the past decade especially the music video industry. In the past, there have been music videos for select songs, but now there are complete channels dedicated solely to showing music videos. With many young female entertainers currently at the top of the charts, many of the music video producers have taken the opportunity to depict women in a negative and inferior light. Their bodies have been depicted on the screen as the ideal build even though most are quite skinny compared to the “average” female their age. This has led to a whole host of gender prejudices, confusions regarding sexuality, dissatisfaction with the body, and eating disorders especially among teenage girls.
Current music videos depict women as objects by focusing on some individual parts of the body instead of the whole. In Christina Aguilera’s new video, for example, the cameras often show a few frames of solely her stomach. By “taking apart” the girls’ bodies, viewers get the impression that the entertainers are like robots with replaceable parts. This encourages viewers to see the females as objects rather than people. I have listened to guys across the hall watch music videos and say what body parts they want to take from different women and reassemble to make the perfect woman.
Their conversation while watching MTV one night went like this “Well if you take Christina’s stomach, Britney’s boobs, and Maria’s @$$ -- no wait, she’s getting heavier Christina’s @$$, man now there’s hot for you.” The girls in the room (who were all between the ages of eighteen and twenty) just laughed and shook their heads. They did not agree, but they also did not stand up and make a big deal of it. They just shook it off as “guys will be guys.” Later in the semester, I was in the same room with basically the same group of people watching MTV. The guys made comments as usual about the female entertainers. Then 8 Degrees came on. Interestingly enough, the girls quietly watched as they had when the females were performing while the guys encouraged them to drool over the entertainers in a mocking fashion. “Becca, look at those abs! [girly voice] Nick is, like, so hot. You want him don’t you? Admit it. You need some loving. You haven’t had a guy in a while.” They were obviously joking around, but the undertone that girls need men for physical/sexual attention was still very prevalent. The girls (myself included) just continued to laugh it off, though, rather than deal with the ridicule of being “all defensive” or just plain “obnoxious” about it. The male music videos depict girls hanging off them to get even one piece of attention or just to serve the males.
Although women feel that music videos degrade their gender, they watch them anyway because they like the songs or just want to watch music videos. Males, however, often blatantly refuse to watch “boy bands” such as the Backstreet Boys and 8 Degrees and call them “sissies” “pretty boys” and “pansies”. When they do see the male entertainers, the males often have degrading comments about the bands such as “They have no talent. What a bunch of fags.” Because many males strongly prefer to see females on the screen, and most females will watch either gender, the television stations show many more women’s music videos than men’s to keep their ratings at a maximum. Men will watch music videos solely to admire the girls’ bodies while women watch to see the dancing and hear the music. Men take offense to being shown as sex symbols while women tolerate it, and many do not even think twice about it. Some of this might be the result of videos and society making them feel like they have no right to protest. Instead they starve themselves to make their bodies look like the “sexy” girls on television.
In a recent Seventeen Magazine article there was an article describing the workout regiment followed by Christina Aguilera, Britney Speares for abs and thighs, and Maria Carey for full body toning. It also had diet tips such as eating vegetables, fruits, salads with no dressing, and no fat snacks. These foods are fine as long as they are supplements, but the article made it sound as though these foods are all that can be eaten in order to lose weight and look like Christina, Britney, or Maria. Seventeen’s target readers are high school girls who. Girls this age tend to be more self-conscious of their bodies than any other age group male or female. The article made the super-slimness of the featured entertainers seem normal and even portrayed them as the templates for how a girl’s body should look.
In women’s music videos, there is a tremendous emphasis on the body and staying “in shape” according to the entertainment industry’s definition. By representing super-skinny girls as desirable, networks create an artificial standard of the ideal, healthy body. Females singers/entertainers spend more time working out than most females have time to. They have luxuries such as personal trainers and to dieticians help them attain their % body fat slimness. Entertainers have a lot of “down time” between performances when many choose to work out to combat boredom. Also, many stars have surgeries to turn their bodies into the perfect dimensions. These surgeries include breast implants, liposuction, collagen injections, and face lifts. They also have the best make up artists to correct any impurities in their face and the skin over their body. Sadly, girls often compare their physical beauty to those on television and try to imitate the stars they see, however unhealthy that may be. Many people blame the rising rate of eating disorders among teens on this. Girls feel they have to look like the females on TV so they resort to bulimia and anorexic behaviors to attain the rock hard, bony bodies they see on television.
Unfortunately, the female entertainers are often locked into doing whatever the producers want for their music videos after signing a contract so even if they do not like being rendered as an object of flesh for men to gawk at, they have no choice. One interview on MTV featured Gwen Steffani, the lead singer of the band No Doubt, as she discussed her experience with this situation. She fought to be able to express herself and do some of her own choreography, but ended up having to do and wear whatever the producers wanted until her contract was over. Other female entertainers do not seem to mind at all and even like the attention. Britney Speares was on television within the past month promoting one of her shows with the comment “It’s all about being women and celebrating our bodies and sexuality. It’s about standing up for who we are.” Most people would consider Britney more of a girl than a woman. She is known for being a sex symbol and is one of the last people many would consider an authority on being a woman.
In any case, females are often projected as craving male attention. They are shown as depressed and lonely until a man suddenly appears out of the blue and gives their lives meaning. Females are shown as objects for men to use solely for sex. The video for “Sour Girl” by Stone Temple Pilots is an example. At the end of the video the girl dies and the man just walks away (with two stuffed bunnies mind you). It seems as though the metaphor is that the artificial bunnies can replace the company of the girl as if she was only a material object too. If the guy had died, the next frame would have been the girl lonely and lost or weeping over his body rather than just moving on. Also in this video, the guy caresses her and even manipulates her hands and body to whatever position he wanted while she stands there just looking pretty expressing the sad talent of an inflatable Barbie doll.
Along these lines, women are depicted as brainless. In the videos, they fall helplessly for whichever man pays attention to them first or most. They move, and often even look, like robots performing the same moves as all the others and wearing the darker silvery makeup hues like Britney Speares’s latest song, Lucky. Some videos show them being used and cheated on by their significant others and do not even portray this behavior in a negative light. They are represented as sex deprived figures who need the attention of a man to be complete and happy. These actresses are often in the background of many videos where the lead singers are male. The women just lounge in chairs or dance in skimpy, revealing clothing.
Females are also shown wearing much less clothing than the typical male entertainer. Women dance around in outfits that are either super tight, leather, a combination, or that resemble bras and underwear more than normal clothing. On the other hand, men wear jeans, khakis, occasional leather pants, tee shirts, sweaters, or custom created outfits. While women are bare midriffed with about the same amount of fabric in their total outfit as men have in their boxers alone, men are rarely shown with their shirts off and even then they do not have to be super athletic, muscular, or physically attractive in any aspect. Most men whose bodies we see look like they have never worked out in their lives and are either super skinny or just have no muscle. Blink 18 illustrates this point perfectly. They even show midgets who look like the singers running around in few or no clothes in a humorous light. They are not tanned and toned like the females.
The music video industry represents females in a disrespectful and unfair manner. They show them half naked and emphasize slim, often unhealthy bodies on women while men can get away with any body type or hide it under baggy, long-sleeved clothes. Women are depicted as objects which can be replaced and whose sole purpose is to please men. They are shown as brainless, but entertaining and therefore having a purpose. One cause may be that most music video directors are male; however each and every woman who is unopinionated on the matter or just passively accepts the women’s music videos contributes to the continuation of this kind of gender prejudice. Sadly, the majority of women fall into this group causing the discrimination and flesh fest to continue to worsen. It will continue to deteriorate since there is no opposition even in this society that takes great pride in having equal rights but is blatantly ignorant with regard to the music video industry.

Racist Language
Racism is a very big part of society today. It is a part of everyday life in places ranging from big cities to small towns. Racist language is both a result and a culprit of this and is used very often. Some of these racists words are used in negative and positive ways and the effects on society have a wide range.
Have you ever cracked a joke about someone of a different race, religion, or culture than you? Have you ever stood around and laughed when someone was making fun of one of these people without stopping them? If so, then you have participated in the use of racist language. Racist language is usually not looked at as being a very serious problem, especially when people say they are just telling jokes, but most people do not understand the harm that it can truly cause. While going to school and living on this widely diversified campus, I have noticed a lot of racist language. I have overheard racist language ranging from joking between friends to private talk about the hatred of another race.
For those who believe a joke is harmless then think about this. You are sitting around with a group of your friends, and one of your friends cracks a joke about black people, and then another friend replies with another degrading joke. Then everybody has a good laugh and no harm is done because you are just laughing along and maybe you say something like, “Oh! That was horrible” but you still laugh because you know that you really are not racist. Now put yourself in the same situation, but this time you do not notice that one of your black friends walks up and is standing right behind you and your friends. Since you did not notice him walk over, you let your friends go on with their jokes. Now you may not have actually said anything in the conversation but what is your friend going to think of you after listening to your friends and you laugh. Your black friend may not know you as a racist but since you did not stop your friends from joking about blacks you are just as guilty as them. So just a simple conversation such as this can affect the way people look at you.
Do my essay on Racist Language CHEAP !
Racist language has to do with a lot more than just jokes and friends though. To me there are specific words that define racism in our society. There is one word in particular that I have a huge problem with, this is the word “nigger”. When the average person such as I hear this word, I think of it as a racial slur used to downgrade black people. The reason for this is because any time I have seen this word used in movies or heard it in real life it has always been used in a hateful way. Like in the old western movies that I grew up with, they would use this word in a very negative way. Also in the movies today the use of this word has increased because of the topics of some movies.
However, this word can be used to mean other things as well. Since I have attended school up here I have met and become friends with several black people, while spending time with my new acquaintances in my room. I have heard them call each other “nigger” on a regular basis. I have also heard this throughout campus. I am a student trainer and work with the football team where the African American guys call each other “niggers” all he time, in all different types of conversations. Now as far as I knew that was an offensive word but my new friends did not seem to think so. I could not understand why they all accepted this word, so I asked one of my African American friends about it. She said that there are two different ways to say the word. One is “nigger” which is very offensive when used in an aggressive way. The other is “nigga” which is not harmful or threatening when said in a friendly way. It is kind of like saying “What’s up dude”, if it is said by a friend. She said that even if white guys said what’s up “nigga” she said that a guy if he was your friend would not be upset as long as he knew it was not said in a non threatening way. This sounded very strange to me, in that there were specific rules on how to say the word. Personally, I do not at all feel comfortable with this word in any way that it is used, but I do find it very interesting how changing a word so very little can change the meaning so drastically. However, I do understand that the way you deliver the word has a big part in the meaning as well. Nonetheless, I do believe that using the word in public is not acceptable no matter how you mean it. The fact is that the majority of people believe the use of the word “nigger” to be a racist comment. Surely people can use an alternative for identifying their friends since this word can be very offensive to some if they do not understand the contents that are using it in. Even if most black people are comfortable calling each other this it may be offensive to some other people who are listening. It is not courteous to say any kind of vulgar language in public. The point is that any use of the word nigger in public will most likely cause more harm than good.
Racist language is a vulgar way for people to try to express them. Besides spreading hatred, it causes people being around it to be uncomfortable. No matter what way this language is used, friendly or not, with different groups or races, it is not good to use in private, much less when people are around because it is so defending towards people not liking this sort of language.

The Sagging Hanger
Advertising can have very powerful effects on people. The ad that I chose to write about is selling Special K cereal. Our society as a whole has become an overweight society so food companies are jumping on the bandwagon to come up with the lowest fat food, or the lowest carbohydrate product. They want to be part of the solution not part of the problem. This particular ad is trying to persuade us to eat less so we can take inches off of our waistline in three weeks. In secret this ad is really trying to sell a thinner waistline. These days our society is so obsessed with weight loss, and appearance, that advertisers can use a simple coat hanger to sell a box of cereal.
For those people who are overweight or just need to loose a few, ads like these really grab your attention. This particular ad is geared toward women who would love to achieve the impossible hour glass figure. Society has drilled into our heads to be thin or be judged by other people for being overweight. To me this ad is really selling “eat very little” not eat healthier. The first way that they grab your attention is by the dark bold red background. Then they use two oversized hangers, the top one happens to be bigger than the second one, sagging in the middle from the weight of larger pants. Inside of the drooping hanger the text reads “Replace two meals a day with a Special K cereal meal.” The second coat hanger, placed more in the center of the page, is virtually perfect. The hanger doesn’t sag in the middle because the pants that were hanging on it weren’t as heavy from extra material. Inside of the straight hanger the text reads “You could lose up to one pant size in three weeks.” Lastly, at the very bottom of the ad two different flavors of Special K cereal sit. The picture on the box has a women’s’ waistline with a tape measure around it in place of a belt as if to show us how many inches thinner she is now from having eaten Special K cereal. Underneath the cereal box it reads Help Yourself.
For some people who think or know that they need to lose a few pounds ads like this one really pull at their heartstrings. Society has drummed up this image on how we should look; perfect skin, perfect breasts, perfect waist, perfect everything. Not an ounce of fat shows anywhere on the body. Everywhere we turn we see this, whether it be on billboards, magazine ads or TV we are surrounded by perfectly beautiful women. So now a days most people find themselves embarrassed about being overweight and are willing to do whatever it takes or try whatever it takes to shed a few pounds, to achieve that perfect figure. They have probably spent most of their lives being judged by other people in our society about how they look. Most of us have even tried alternative methods of weight loss, but to little or no success. So when we see ads like this we think, wow in just three short weeks I can drop a pant size just by eating Special K cereal. Can it really be that easy? People are persuaded to buy the cereal so they can, in just three weeks, have the hanger they have always dreamed of.
Cheap custom writing service can write essays on The Sagging Hanger
The ad states that all you have to do to lose inches off of your waistline is to replace two meals a day with one cup of Special K cereal and / cup of skim milk and in three weeks you can loose 0.8 inches from your waistline. Nowhere in the ad does it promote you to exercise. Nowhere in the ad does it advise you on what other types of food you should eat for the last meal of the day. It doesn’t explain what kind of snacks, if any, you can have. Our society wants us to be thinner and more appealing to the male eye, but ads like this only sugar coat what really needs to go into weight loss. We have failed as a society to educate people on how to eat properly and exercise.
This sets off our drive for the need to achieve. The advertiser wants you to believe that you can achieve the loss of a pant size. Do they really want us to succeed? I think they want us to be somewhat successful so that we will still by their product. As I stated earlier in the essay that this ad is geared toward women and not men. The picture one the box has a women’s waistline. I think women in general always have their figure on their minds so they can be more appealing to men and other women around them. They feel the need to be accepted. We set goals for ourselves and try with all of our willpower to stick to them. We have to endure the pain of hunger throughout the day from replacing those two meals a day with a one cup Special K meal. We use our willpower when we walk past those vending machines and see the Snickers bar or the bag of Dorritos. The obstacle that the advertisers really want you to overcome is yourself. Having self control by skipping two meals a day and replacing them with the Special K cereal gives you the drive to obtain that impossible figure that you desire.
The part of this ad that I find the most humorous is at the end. It says to “Help Yourself”. Help yourself, to only two measly one-cup servings of Special K cereal a day, plus one regular meal. A lot of people will actually buy into this promotion. Starve yourself so you can be thinner and accepted by our peers in society.
This brings up the need for attention, whether wanted or not. We have become obsessed with what people think of us. Even though we are told it doesn’t matter what we look like on the outside it’s what’s on the inside that counts. That saying is much easier said than done. People always have and probably will judge us or look down upon us for what we look like. People will start noticing me for being thinner. I will finally start receiving positive attention from my peers instead of negative attention. When I walk into a restaurant people won’t turn around and stare or point at me. I will finally be able to wear those sizes whatever pants and not have to bend my hangers anymore. People will start paying attention to me and noticing me because I am thinner.
In conclusion this ad is trying to sell a cure for being overweight. As I have stated earlier though, Kellog’s the maker of the cereal doesn’t promote any other type of maintenance. Two cups of cereal a day isn’t going to solve the ultimate problem. What happens at the end of the three weeks or when you have actually achieved this goal of losing a pant size? Can the person start eating again? Or do they have to eat Special K cereal for the rest of their life to maintain that perfect figure. This ad wants you to buy Special K for the rest of your life to keep your newly found beautiful figure.

The tragedy of /11/01 shows the path America has been on. The loss of life should not have even happened. This idea that has been put forth by the anti-constitutional/anti-personal responsibility liberal left, that the government is the only one that can take care of us led to those tragic deaths.
The American people have been programmed into believing that if a plane is hijacked that the government will negotiate and they will be safe. There is no negotiating with religious fanatics. The passengers on the planes out numbered the terrorists. Everyone on those planes had the power to over take the hijackers, but they did not. Only the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania had people aboard that understood this concept. They died, but they died fighting and maybe if they had more time, they might have been able to land the plane safely.
Why is that in a womens self defense/anti-rape class, the first thing that is taught is that you never give into your attacker and everything in your purse or hand can be a weapon. This same concept must be taught when dealing with terrorists. All the passengers on the ill-fated flights possessed that power but did not take advantage of it.
All through history mankind has been victim to small groups of oppressors that control and kill. Just go back a little over 500 years and remember the 178 Conquistadors that conquered a civilization with 10 million citizens and killed 14,000 of them in one day. There was no reason for all of them to die, they had the power of numbers to overwhelm the Conquistadors, but did not. In situations like these, we must understand that some may die trying to save the lives of others. But to give up and let all die is a total waste of life.

The fifth choice is what the liberal left would have us do, turn the plane over to the hijacker, because the government will take care of us. That is not how it works with these fanatics!
After the attack President Bush said America would get justice. This meant we would take them to court and make them suffer with the parking in New York. Then our President and Country declared war on terrorism and the American people rallied behind this idea for a few days. Now we are told that some of Bin Ladens assets have been seized. As Americans we must ask why have not these assets been seized before by previous administrations? They knew Bin Laden was behind previous attacks.
So now we are supposed to be at war. How can we as a nation expect to put the fear of our God and religions into these fanatics and win the war, when we have to change the name of the operation times as to not to offend anyone of a different religious persuasion. Why did the Attorney General when discussing the letter from a hijacker have to keep apologizing and saying that in no way does this reflect the Muslim faith? We are defeating ourselves from the very beginning. America must stand tall and not bend with the winds of words. Our enemies have never worried about offending America.
No American has once celebrated in the street over the death of a Palestinian as they did. When the Christian holidays arrive, will the terrorists call for a truce on attacks against America? I think not. But when the Muslim holidays arrive we will not be able to fight them out of respect for their religion. You dont win a war with these tactics. If you think I am wrong just remember the last attacks on Iraq. We could not fight them during Ramadan. And during that conflict a soldier did what soldiers have done since time began and man had conflicts. He wrote on a bomb headed for Iraq that said Happy Ramadan. Well the liberals saw this and wanted the soldier court martialed. They said that it was insensitive to write something like that. Well excuse me, it is a bomb, what the hell do you think a bomb does.
In 167 the Arabs attacked Israel on yom Kippur, a religious holiday. Because of this blazen act the Arabs got their butts kicked. They dont care or respect other religions, so why should America stop fighting during their Ramadan? Maybe it is because we dont want to upset the coalition? Yeah right. It has been proven that besides Bin Laden, that Egypt and Saudi Arabia was also involvedin the attack against America. We must remember that the Arabs like to threaten America and say how they will give us the mother of all wars. They talk good trash, but when push comes to shove, they cry like little children. As in Iraq the soldiers dropped their guns when they saw us coming. The Arabs only fight good against each other. They are no real threat if we actually fight a war as a war should be fought.
The most ridiculous event of convenience to take place since the bombing was the Muslim firemen in Florida that refused to ride on the fire truck because the American flag represented oppression. So all of a sudden these guys feel compelled to say that America is bad and oppressive. So what great country did they leave to come here? These guys should tell us where the best country is? Does that country allow them all the freedoms and that nice paycheck that they have been earning from this oppressive country? I am sure we all would like to go to that country. Is it a secret? Somebody please tell us where this Utopia is? But the real problem here was that they won and the flag was removed.
Now this takes us to another area with the state of American War. We here all these people saying I dont want to see innocent people die. So are they saying the people in the planes, the Pentagon and the World Trade Center were not innocent? Bombing empty buildings and factories does not end tyranny. If it does then why dont terrorists bomb empty American buildings? Buildings get rebuilt and the bombings do not bring down the governments. America must retaliate and retaliate hard. If America does not, the terrorists will see this as a weakness and attack us again.
The anti-war activists are marching in Washington for us to forgive, forget and negotiate. Our enemies love this sign of weakness. If we gave into their demands, as these protesters would have, where do you think we would be? We would be dead. These fanatics want all Americans to be dead! Would someone please ask these activists how you negotiate something like that? Bill Mahr tells America that firing missiles is not courage, but being a terrorist on a plane that kills innocent people is what courage is. What is wrong with this liberal picture? Why is it that the liberals would now have us believe that we made the terrorists attack us? That now the terrorists are the victims, not America. Terrorists stand for nothing other than control of other people. If they really looked at themselves they would see that they are what they hate. But that would be using logic, which these fanatics do not have the word in their vocabulary.
Innocent people will die in wars and they will be remembered. But without this fear, war will not be feared. We have not fought a war, as a war since WWII. In Korea we were afraid to take it downtown to the enemy and we lost thousands of American soldiers. America had the chance to go to downtown Baghdad and did not. Sadam is still in power oppressing his people and living the good life downtown. In Vietnam, we did not take it to downtown Hanoi and we lost 60,000 American soldiers. To win a war you do not just defend, you take it to the enemy! Surgical bombing has been proven not to work.
America lets UNICEF deliver 50 million dollars worth of aid to the Afghanistan rebels. And the U.S. government gives money to help with the refugees. This is because America wants them to know that we are not the bad guys. We want to put the rebels in power in Afghanistan so the people will be free. Oh please! Cant we remember Somalia? America went there to help. The warlords were put in power and were given aid, food and money. And what did they give us? They killed our soldiers that were there to help them and sold the aid supplies on the black market. In Bosnia we gave aid to one side to stop the ethnic cleansing. Then when it was over the side we were protecting became as bad as the side we were fighting. They started their own ethnic cleansing. The only thing that America did that made mankind safer in Yugoslavia was when w the Yugo Auto factory was bombed. That is the only instance when surgical bombing a building worked and saved mankind.
As Americans, every time there is a disaster in the world we rush in to help and to give money. As of /11/01 how many countries have sent money to help cover the cost of cleaning up New York? How about Vincente Fox of Mexico? Since he became President, all he can do is tell us how much we need his citizens in America. I may have missed it, but I dont remember hearing him offer to send people to help in New York and to work for less than minimum wage. I guess you know who your friends are when you live in America. The world hates the American lifestyle, but none of them will return any American dollars. Why is that?
How about France? That is the country that would not let us fly over them to get Khdafy. Paris is where every terrorist has a cell and this is a well-known fact to the world. Then the President of France says they are behind America, but that they will not commit troops. Well we all knew they would do that. But let them need help and who do they come running to? Yes that is right, America. And when we are done helping them, we are the Ugly Americans to the French.
We need true American history to be taught in our schools again. It use to be taught that Freedom was earned and not given by oppressors. Lives had to be given for America to become a nation. In 1776 America did not go to King George and ask that America become a free country. And if they did, do you think the King would have said, Hey, thats a great idea. You go and have a great time. America had to fight for freedom with the loss of life and America must fight now for freedom.
War is not glory. War is not bombing buildings that can be rebuilt. War is horrible. War is death. War is the maintainer of peace and freedom for periods of time in the future. As long as man can have different opinions and beliefs there will always be wars. It is freedom that guarantees different opinions, beliefs and speech. These freedoms at times must be preserved by war. America may have a lot of problems, but America is the closest thing to a Utopia that world has seen.

The transcendentalists were a cult-like group of people who found God through nature. They had many beliefs based on the ideas of anti-conformity and simplicity. One of the leaders of this group, Ralph Waldo Emerson, wrote many books, poems, stories, and maxims about his beliefs. Another famous transcendentalist, Henry David Thoreau, wrote a book about an experiment he performed in which he lived in the woods with just the basic necessities. In the novel he preaches a lot about God and his simplistic and non-conformist beliefs, which I somewhat agree with.
There are a few ideas that I agree with the transcendentalists on. These are all written in some of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s maxims. Two based on the same idea are “My life is for itself and not for a spectacle” and “Insist on yourself; never imitate”. These basically mean that one should do what he/she wants rather than what is accepted, which is an idea I agree with. I don’t believe, however, that one should stop liking something just because it became popular’ if one likes it, what does it matter if someone else does, too? Another idea I believe in was also expressed by Emerson through a maxim. It states that “Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind”. Integrity is a trait that is hard to come by in this day and age, making it an even more valuable asset to have. It is something that one is born with and not acquirable, unlike intelligence. Some people are naturally smart, but others can work hard and still learn a lot and become smarter; on the other hand, integrity can not be worked at, it is something you just have. It is evident that I concur with some of the transcendentalists’ ideas; however I do not feel that way about all of them.
Although I do agree with some of the transcendentalists’ ideas, I differ with them on others. First, I do not believe that “The civilized man has built a coach, but has lost the use of his feet”. I agree that people rely on technological advancements more than one should; nevertheless, I also believe that the helpful advancements should be taken advantage of. For example, electricity is something that people rely on, but it is one that only helps our society. Apparently, this is not how Henry David Thoreau felt because he moved into the woods with only the essentials for his use, which I consider a waste of the inventions that were just meant to help people in their everyday lives. I also feel that the transcendentalists preach too much. The group seems to advocate their ideas as much as possible, but will not accept anyone who thinks differently. The transcendentalists have many ideas that they seem to believe in strongly; yet, not everyone, including me, concurs.

• Maid abuse serious crime?
• How’ll faber be seen condoning maid abuse?
• Moral of wk force
• How jail term affects her? Dwell in depression? Affect her wk performance?
Write my Essay on maid abuse for me
1. Co’s image saturated industry, newspaper story tarnished co image, clients may not accept dealing with her and will think we condone such actions, do what is gd for the company not just 1 individual
. employee’s moral doesn’t deal well with subordinates, high expectation n demanding but doesn’t open to arguments, colleagues have reservation working with her as she might abuse them, bad r/s, poor productivity due to persistant of her depression
. replacement not difficult and necessary, promote some one in the department
4. ethical issues give her some form of compensation
In view of Mei Yee’s conviction, it has brought to our attention we are unable to continue her employment with Faber Audio. Our company’s image is at stake, employees’ moral will be affected having Mei Yee back after her jail term and having a replacement for the position of customer relation officer ( CRO ) is feasible. The above issues have given us the decision to terminate her employment.
Our company is in a saturated industry, which requires us to keep good customer relationship with current and new clients for survival. Newspaper reports on Mei Yee’s crimes have accused the company’s work pressure had contributed to her harsh treatment towards her maid. The reports have tarnished the good image we are trying to built up over the years with clients. Keeping Mei Yee will enable us to retain the major customers who have high praises for her work. However, we must take into consideration other existing clients, potential clients and the general public perception on our company if we keep her. Our society is unable to tolerate any form of abuse and by keeping Mei Yee we will be seen as condoning such unethical actions. Especially in Singapore, maid abuse is considered as something very serious and can be seen as a crime itself. People who committed it was considered as someone merciless. We cannot afford to leave an impression that the company choose to overlook this point and continue to employ Mei Yee. This will leave a negative impact on the public, which might lead to our sales down further. Our main concern is for the well being of the company and not just one individual and keeping Mei Yee will be at the expense of the company. Therefore we would need to explain our position to the major customers on our decision and seek their understanding.
We did a research on the relationship of Mei Yee and her subordinates and were surprised to find her unable to get along with them. We anticipate we will be encountering further complications from Mei Yee with her subordinates upon her return, especially after being seen as an ex-convict of abusing maids. Mei Yee had high expectations on her job scope and has the same expectations upon her subordinates. It is understandable that she have these high expectations. However she was seen as being too over demanding instead, at the same time unwilling to open to her subordinates’ well-reasoned arguments. Her subordinates have responded they are rather unhappy with her working attitude and unable to work with her well. On top of that, they have reservations working with her now as they are afraid her depression might worsen her attitude towards them. It seems that if her depression persists, it will definitely affect her work performance. With the sales figure going down, we cannot afford to have the CRO seat vacant for months and take the risk of having Mei Yee back with high possibility of bad work performance due to her depression. I do suggest we could shortlist the current 7 customer relations staff to take over her post. We would then be able to save on the training. On the other hand, we could employ another customer relations staff to even out the work load and could at the same time save significant amount of fund without having to train a new staff on such a professional post.
We cannot deny Mei Yee has great contribution to the company. Though we will be terminating her employment, we felt that we should not be totally unsympathetic towards her. We could provide her with some form of reasonable compensation to acknowledge her efforts in the company and to assist her financially. After an in depth research on Mei Yee, it seems unjustifiable to keep her in the company with her bad relationship with subordinates, having the company’s image at stake and the high possibility that her work performance would have been affected due to her depression and her jail term. Thus we come to a conclusion to terminate her.
