But Mr. Washington first linked these things; he put enthusiasm, unlimited energy, and perfect faith into this program, and changed it from a by-path into a veritable Way of Life. And the tale of the methods by which he did this is a fascinating study of human life. The novel „Dead Poets Society“ is written by N. H. Kleinbaum. This fiction story takes place at Welton Academy, a private school only for boys in Vermont, USA in the year 15. One of the main characters is the new English professor Mr. John Keating. Today I want to deal with the relationship between this teacher and his pupils and with the question how he influences the boys.
When Keating comes into class for the first time, to confuse the boys and make them pay attention, he is wearing a shirt and a tie but no jacket, like all the other teachers. He sits at the front of the room, staring out the window and doesn�t say a word. To convince the students different his lessons are, he does very strange things. After their first lesson with Mr. Keating the boys are surprised, curious, and fascinated by him. The students realize that he is clearly in contrast to their other teachers. These seem old, uninspired, disinterested in them and old-fashioned in their way of teaching. So most of the boys like his way of teaching very much. Mr. Keating was a Welton student, so he knows that the teachers at this private school don�t really care for the children. It�s the first time that these young man are separeted from their parents. Nobody is interested in their feelings. Furthermore there is a lot of pressure on the students, everybody expects them to be excellent and perfect. I think Mr. Keating is like a second father for the students. He is the only person at this school whom they trust. They talk to him, for example, about their problems with their parents. And their teacher gives them advice and takes care of them. He is not only interested in learning and in results. His students are important to him, not their marks. And that�s why the boys like him. They can call him „Captain. Thats something new onat this traditional school with strict rules, which you have to obey, and shows the special relationship between Mr. Keating and his students. Keating has got a very modern style of teaching. He wants the students to become free-thinkers and individualists. But the parents and the other teachers don�t like these teaching methods. They prefer the old style of teaching which means hard work and discipline. And they think that the young students can�t have their own opinion of poetry. But Mr. Keating does. He tells them to rip out the first chapter of their textbook because he doesn�t want the students to believe everything they are told by old books. The teacher wants them to get involved with poetry at the level of their emotions and its meaning. And he wants to convince them of his seriousness in encouraging them to think for themselves and realize that words and ideas can change the world. Heathcliff was wild; he always played on the moor, and in the way he treated himself and other people, it seemed like he did not know how to treat people, and he did not even know how to take the revenge properly, just like an animal. Animal or inhuman terms often used by other characters to describe him.
Heathcliff was rude and unfriendly. When Mr Lockwood visited him at “Wuthering Heights” he made no offer to shake hands, his hands remained in his pocket. The way he would speak to people was very rough “’Walk in!’ he spoke with closed teeth, and continued to lean over the gate. When Mr Lockwood tried to make friends with the dog, Heathcliff still shows he is a cold person, “’you’d better leave her alone’, said Heathcliff roughly, pushing the animal away with his foot, as she showed me all her teeth.” The way he talks to Mr Lockwood is very rude, e.g. “What the devil is the matter?” and “They won’t attack people who touch nothing.” These two quotations are said by Heathcliff to Mr Lockwood. It shows Heathcliff is rude, feel annoyed and inpatient. He said this because Mr Lockwood seemed to bother him, and his dogs a lot. One night, it was snowing very heavily, Heathcliff would not even let Mr Lockwood stay, when Mr Lockwood took the lamp away, Joseph even let the dogs attack him, when Heathcliff saw it, he told the dogs off, but they laughed at him, and from this we can clearly see Heathcliff does not have a warm heart.
Passionate was another characteristic of Heathcliff. He loved Catherine from deep inside his heart. I can see this from the way he took revenge, he was angry and mad, telling his emotions has take over his mind and he was out of his control. After Catherine died Heathcliff made a declaration “I cannot live without my life! I cannot live without my soul!” Heathcliff meant Catherine’s life is his life; he cannot live without Catherine if she is not alive. Catherine’s soul is his Heathcliff and Catherine are two halves of a whole in one soul. Heathcliff’s declaration mirrors Catherine’s declaration of their love. They are one of the same being. It shows that they loved each other, and they will always be connected together.
Before the events of chapter , Heathcliff was a victim; people despised him, called him a gypsy and treated him as a servant, especially Hindley from his jealousy. Heathcliff was savage- like in behaviour; he would run around with bare footed. Catherine and Heathcliff spent a lot of time together as children, they fell in love. However, their love and happiness was not to last.
Once, when Heathcliff and Catherine were playing and running on the moors and Mr Linton saw them. He was shocked to find out that Catherine was not a peasant, but a member of a respected family- the Earnshaws. Catherine stayed with the Lintons for a while, and only returned to Wuthering Heights when she looked more like a lady. From this point on, Heathcliff’s and Catherine’s relationship changed.
In chapter , after Hareton was born, Catherine was about fifteen, Catherine told Nelly that Edgar Linton had proposed marriage to her, and she asked Nelly if she should marry Edgar. Then Nelly asked Catherine whether she loved him or not. Catherine replied that she does love him, because he is handsome, pleasant to be with, young and cheerful. Also he loves her, he will be rich and she shall like to be the greatest woman of the neighbourhood, and she shall be proud of having such a husband. Then she said she loves him just as everybody loves, she loves the ground under his feet, the air over his head, everything he touches and every word he says. She loves all his looks, actions and him entirely.
However, Catherine admitted that she does not really love Edgar but feels that she has to marry him, “I have no more business to marry Edgar Linton than I have to be in heaven; and if the wicked man in there had not brought Heathcliff so low, I should not have thought of it. It would degrade me to marry Heathcliff.” This quotation is said by Catherine to Nelly at the time when she accepts Edgar’s proposal. She reaffirms she only marries Edgar because Hindley degrade Heathcliff by treat him like a “servant”. So if Hindley did not treated Heathcliff so terrible like a servant, she would marry Heathcliff because she loves him.
Then she said Heathcliff shall never know how I love him, not because he is handsome, because “he is more myself than I am.” This quotation is said by Catherine after she said it would degrade her to marry Heathcliff. She said it because she thinks that Heathcliff understands her more than anyone else, even more than herself. She cares about him just as she cares about herself.
When Catherine speaks of their love she says, “My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath a source of little visible delights, but necessary. Nelly, I am Heathcliff!” This quotation is said by Catherine to Nelly at the time she accepts Edgar’s proposal. She describes her love for Heathcliff as eternal rocks, meaning whatever happens between them, their love will last forever like the rocks can not be broken. Catherine says she is Heathcliff, meaning that they are two halves of a whole.
While Catherine was telling Nelly about the she accepted Edgar’s proposal, Heathcliff overhears their conversation, that a marriage with him would “degrade” her. Heathcliff felt really bad, and he felt like his heart has been stung by a nest of bees and broken into a thousand pieces. After Heathcliff hears Catherine choose to marry Edgar with his wealth and social position, he can not stand this truth, so he decides to leave.
When he returns, he is transformed into a rich gentleman, as if to make himself worthy of Catherine. However, he plans revenge as both Hindley and Edgar are the cause of his separation from Catherine. He becomes increasingly an oppressor. His revenge entails getting control of both the Earnshaws’ and Lintons’ property.
After Catherine died in the child birth, because she was ill and her weakness can not afford loosing too much blood. Her daughter Cathy was born. In this point Nelly says that Heathcliff “behaves like a mad dog”. This quotation is said by Nelly at the time at Catherine’s death. Nelly said this because in Heathcliff’s grief, he looses control in emotion. She calls him a dog because in animal she does not know how to control him.
In the direction of the end, Heathcliff’s aspirations for revenge die away as he expect get-together with Catherine and sees her similarity in Hareton and Cathy. Just before his death, Nelly comments on Hindley’s victimization of Heathcliff “enough to make a fiend of a saint” This quotation is said by Nelly before Heathcliff died. Nelly was sympathetic towards Heathcliff that anyone treated so badly would end up evil “fiend” even they were a saint. He dies in the room he has shared with her, the window open, as even if his spirit has joined her.
Looking at my analysis I had discovered that Heathcliff is a victim of his own revenge. I have come to this conclusion because the point that Catherine thinks that marry Heathcliff would degrade her. Heathcliff could not stand this and he let his emotion of sadness and anger taking over his mind and starting revenge. In the revenge he hurts the people around him even some of the people do not know the reason that Heathcliff is doing it. Although he is taking revenge trying to spread out and explode his anger, the revenge hurt him at the same time. If he did not choose to take revenge he could be live with other people peacefully in the rest of his life, but he has chosen to take revenge as being a cold person, cruel, violent and hurting people. From this point, his life had wasted in the revenge. However, he could have learnt and experienced how wonderful life could be, even without Catherine. Heathcliff should have respect Catherine’s choice and think in a different way that she was part of his life, and the thing that will never disappear and loose from him is the memories of the things they have been doing together.
