In Prometheus Bound, Io relates her story about her relationship with Zeus. She tells of how her father, Inachus, was ordered by Zeus to cast her out and let her wander the country or else “the fire-faced thunderbolt would come from Zeus / and blot out his whole race” (Prometheus Bound, 668-66). Here again, Zeus threatens mere mortals to obey what he says, since he is superior to them. When Io finishes telling her story, she wants to know what is in store for her future and whether she will suffer even more pain. Prometheus, as a prophet, must know that he will end up telling her, but he still refuses to tell her in that moment. Although he does tell her that in her fate, there still remains much suffering and toil. She responds by saying, “Do not offer me the gift and then withhold it” (Prometheus Bound, 777). Finally, Prometheus gives in and tells her everything that her intended journey holds. However slight this resistance may have been, Prometheus resisted doing what would happen anyway � telling Io her fate. This seems to contradict what Prometheus had done from the start, which is to accept his fate of suffering for his love of mankind. He does this, because he knows that eventually Hercules will free him from bondage.


Also, another strong-headed character is apparent in The Bacchae. Teiresias warned Pentheus “this god whom you ridicule shall someday have enormous power and prestige throughout Hellas” (The Bacchae, 7-74). If Pentheus denounced this god, then his fate would be to suffer or to die as punishment. Pentheus, however, tried to be rational by denouncing Dionysus and told Teiresias and Cadmus, “do not wipe your madness off on me. By god, I’ll make him pay, the man who taught you this folly of yours” (The Bacchae, 4-46). Clearly, he was not rational at all and always spoke out of anger.


Teiresias denounced Pentheuss actions as “lunacy” (The Bacchae, 5), and, even though Euripides made Teiresias look weak and almost comical, he was correct in the end. Pentheus was violent and disrespectful to the age and position of not only Teiresias, but also his own grandfather, Cadmus.


Pentheus, furious with all these followers, whom he thinks are ridiculous for following the new religion, bound Dionysus without believing he was a god. Dionysus gave Pentheus a warning “place no chains on me” (The Bacchae, 507), but Pentheus gave no heed to the warning. He continued to push his own view that the followers were fools, and refute the warnings that they were trying to give him as Dionysus repeatedly said that the god was present and that he saw everything that was going on. Finally, he forewarned that “Dionysus whom you outrage by your acts, who you deny is god, will call you to account. When you set chains on me, you manacle the god” (The Bacchae, 517-51). Eventually, Pentheus does get his end by being torn to pieces by his own mother, whom Dionysus drove temporarily insane.


Pretentious characters were not the only ones that trie to battle their own fate. There were noble characters that also fell while trying to evade the path that had already been set. In Sophocles’s Oedipus the King, King Laius and Queen Jocasta of Thebes had a son who was fated to kill his father and marry his mother. To prevent this, the king and queen sent it off with a messenger boy after which, they presumed it to be dead. However, the son, Oedipus, came into the hands of Polybus and Merope of Citheron who raised him to be their own. Later, Oedipus also heard this same prophecy that he would kill his father and marry his mother. So he set off on the road to try to fight this inevitable outcome. Ironically, on his journey, he did kill his real father, King Laius, and eventually married Jocasta as the King of Thebes.


Oedipus’s self-assured nature was important in his denial of his fate and his own demise. He was willing to take on full responsibility for dealing with crises and had a powerful sense of his own self-worth. We see this especially after he learned about the death of King Laius, and he tried to discover who the murder was. In his quarrel with Teiresias, some may think that Oedipus was acting odd and too proud, but his denial was reasonable considering that Oedipus was someone with no sense of ambiguity in life. His view on the world was that the only thing that matters is truth. Knowing this, he had good reason to be angry with Teiresias for withholding such valuable information from him. Oedipus had no reason to suspect that he himself was the “land’s pollution” (Oedipus the King, 5). Oedipus fought, unknowingly, what his fate had already fulfilled. To him, Teiresias must have been lying, and he must have had a reason � a secret agenda. It was also for this assertive and righteous attitude that he had set out on his own in the first place to save his “parents.” He refused to accept that fate, and he constructed a life where he had been told what would happen, would not happen.


The vision of life here was very mysterious and very cruel. Even the best and most innocent men who strived to live the best life possible and who endured hardship would be horrified to learn the truth. Fate did not seem to be fair in setting up some clear rules and a happier future. As far as the story was portrayed, Oedipus did not deserve such suffering and there did not seem to be any sense that it was linked to some sin he had committed. Here Fate punished arbitrarily and mercilessly those who chose to confront it. On the other hand, Fate seemed to deliver what was just to those who were too pompous to accept it such as Zeus and Pentheus. But deserving or not, when faced with a choice to fight or take flight, many chose to fight in the end for the hope that Fate was not Destiny.

The story begins with a group of friends sit around the fireplace of an old house in 180s England, telling ghost stories. A man named Griffin tells a ghost story featuring a little boy, and a man named Douglas proposes to tell a true story about two children. Douglas keeps the manuscript of the story locked in a drawer at home in London. It was written by a woman, now dead, who was once his younger sisters governess and with whom he was in love. Three days later, the manuscript arrives by the post, and Douglas begins his story.


Douglas explains that the young woman had interviewed for her first governess job with a gentleman on Londons Harley Street, before reading the manuscript. She was quite smitten with him, and he was able to convince her to accept the position of governess to his niece and nephew at his country house Bly. The previous governess has died and the boy is now away at school and the girl in the care of the housekeper. There is one condition She cannot contact him at any time and must deal with all problems herself.


The governess arrives at Bly, where she is met by a beautiful little girl, eight-year-old Flora, and the housekeeper, Mrs. Grose. The boy, ten-year-old Miles, will return from school in a few days. The night before his arrival, the governess receives a letter from the headmaster of his school refusing to allow Miles to return to school after the summer holiday. Mrs. Grose assures the governess that Miles is too good a boy to have done anything to deserve expulsion, and the governess agrees to meet the boy before drawing any conclusions.


Upon his arrival, the governess finds Miles to be just as beautiful and angelic as his sister and decides to do nothing in response to the letter. For a time, the governess is very happy. The children are excellent students. One evening, as she strolls around the grounds, she images their uncle coming upon her and smiling his approval at her for succeeding at her job. At just that moment, the governess looks up and sees a man in one of the towers of the house. She at first thinks it is the uncle but then realizes it is a stranger. The man stares at her until she turns away.


The governess is worried after this but guesses that it must have been a traveler who trespassed in the tower for the view it provided. She instead concentrates on the children. Then one rainy afternoon, when she goes into the dining room to look for her gloves, she sees the same man staring at her, outside the window, but when she runs out of the house to confront him, he is gone. She describes the man - curly red hair, red whiskers, sharp eyes - to Mrs. Grose. The housekeeper says that the man is Peter Quint, the uncles former valet who is now dead. He was found on the side of the street with a wound on his head, apparently caused by a fall. Villagers speculate he had been drunk and was walking alone at night when he fell.


The governess believes that Quint was not looking for her but for Miles. She finds it odd that Miles has never mentioned him. Mrs. Grose tells her that Quint was too free with Miles when he was at Bly and that the two spent a great deal of time together. The governess pledges that she will protect the children.


One afternoon, the governess sits with Flora as she plays by the lake. She becomes aware that someone else is present across the lake and rushes to tell Mrs. Grose what has happened. A woman appeared across the lake, and she is certain that Flora knew she was there. The governess is convinced that the woman was Miss Jessel, the governess who died of misscariage. Mrs. Grose tells her that Miss Jessel had an infamous relationship with Quint (i.e. had an affair) and then went away, though she does not know the exact circumstances of her death. The governess believes that the children are lost to these ghosts.


The governess, knowing about Miless friendship with Quint, comes to believe that he did something wicked that resulted in his expulsion from school. She thinks that the children are communing with the ghosts behind her back, and tries to keep them in her sight at all times.


One night, the governess is up late reading when she hears something in the hallway. She sees Quint standing halfway up the stairs. He stares at her, then turns and fades away as he walks down the stairs. When she gets back to her room, where Flora also sleeps, the little girl is missing. She finds her behind the curtain, looking out the window. Flora says she thought someone was outside but saw no one.


Another night, the governess sees a woman sitting at the bottom of the stairs, her head in her hands, as if she is crying. Several nights later, the governess wakes up and sees that Flora is behind the curtain, looking out the window again. She slips out into the hall and stands outside Miles room, listening at his door to hear if he is awake, before choosing an empty bedroom from which to look out onto the lawn. There, outside, is Miles.


The next day, the governess tells Mrs. Grose what happened. When she brought Miles back to his room and asked why he was outside, he told her he arranged things with Flora so that the governess would think him, for a change, bad. The governess is even more certain that the children meet with the ghosts in secret. She thinks Quint and Miss Jessel want to possess the children and lead them to their deaths. When Mrs. Grose suggests contacting the uncle, the governess threatens to leave Bly if she were to do so.


The governess believes that the ghosts are sometimes present and visible only to Miles and Flora. The children write letters, which are never mailed, to their uncle and talk of his coming to visit, and the governess sees evidence of his trust in her in his failure to visit.


Walking to church one Sunday, Miles asks the governess when he is going back to school. He wants to know if his uncle thinks what the governess does about keeping him out of school and says that he will do something to make his uncle come visit. The governess is so upset she does not enter the church and instead rushes back to the house, planning to leave. She sits on the stairs, crying, and then realizes that she had seen Miss Jessel sitting in the same spot. She then goes in the schoolroom where she sees Miss Jessel sitting at her own table, staring at her as if she is the intruder.


The governess decides to stay, and when Mrs. Grose returns, she tells her that Miss Jessel told her that she suffers the torments of hell and that she wants Flora to suffer them with her. The governess decides to write to the uncle.


That night, she talks with Miles about going to a new school and asks about things that happened at Bly and at school before. Suddenly, the candle blows out, and Miles says he did it.


The governess writes the letter but keeps it in her pocket the next day, planning to send it later. Miles offers to play the piano for her, and while he does, she loses track of time. When he finishes, she realizes Flora is missing. Mrs. Grose doesnt know where she is either. The governess leaves the letter on the table for a servant named Luke to take, and the two women rush to the lake to look for Flora.


They find the boat missing. Flora has taken it - with Miss Jessels help, the governess believes - across the lake. They walk decide to walk around the lake and catch up with Flora. On the other side, they see the boat, hidden, and the oars drawn up inside, a dificult feat for such a small girl. The governess demands the child tell her where Miss Jessel is, and suddenly Miss Jessel appears on the other side of the lake. The governess points her out, but Mrs. Grose cannot see her. Flora only looks at the governess, who demands she admit that Miss Jessel is there. Flora looks scared, and Mrs. Grose immediately reproaches the governess and assures Flora that nobody is there and its all a mistake and a bad joke. Flora says that she sees nobody and never has, that the governess is cruel, and that she wants to be taken away from he right away. Finally, Mrs. Grose takes the distraught child home, and the governess collapses in tears on the bank. When she comes home, Miles sits with her by the fire and says nothing.


The next morning, Mrs. Grose tells her that Flora is feverish and is terrified of seeing the governess, of whom she says awful things. She also says that the letter never went to the uncle, and Miles must have taken it. The governess sends Mrs. Grose and Flora by coach to the uncle immediately, and plans to stay alone with Miles.


Miles is gone, wandering the grounds all day. Finally, he and the governess eat dinner in the dining room, where she once saw Quint through the window. The governess asks Miles to tell her what is on his mind, but he says that he wants to talk to Luke first. Suddenly, Peter Quint appears in the window.


The governess struggles to keep Miless back to the window and demands to know if he took the letter. When he says he did, she demands to know what he did at school to get expelled, and he says that he said things to his friends, which they passed on to their friends. The governess shrieks at Quint in the window, and tells Miles hes at the window. Miles asks, Its he? and when the governess demands to know which he, he is talking about Miles shouts Peter Quint - you devil!, then yells Where?. The governess tries to show Miles Quint in the window, then grasps the boy in her arms. After a few moments, she realizes his heart has stopped beating.

Nothing material or human can make that happiness exist. Only you can choose to be happy, and you can be happy any time and any place. So really, all that we change over our lives is the scenery. We dream of one day living in such and such a house with such and such companions. When we sleep we live freely. Only your own mind exists to live and there are no boundaries. No people ruining a feeling or emotion � they come as easy as a desire. No physical restraints or pains. I match my demands with the thoughts in my head.


This is my attempt to explain how life seems meaningless. Or not life, but rather so many of the things people say are meaningful seem so lackluster, boring and a bloody godawful waste of time. I live a dream. WE all do. We strive to meet the DEMANDS that we feel we have. That craving for a cigarette. That desire to be in love with a loving companion. The pleasureable thought of a beach walk in the warm summer sun. or the self-imposed goal of being X occupation and making X amount of money. But when you get there you realize the only thing making that moment spectacular is that you feel obligated to redeem that dream you once thought up in your head. “I wanted to fuck Jenny an hour ago, so now that I’m fucking her I’m enjoying it.” But are you? Don’t you ever find that the outcome is always more grim and disappointing than the anticipation?


Uselessness. I;ve been cought in a cycle that makes me unable to live life like an ordinary person. I’m not handicapped physically or mentally. I’m not intoxicated. I just resist living life in “the ordinary” sense because I can. The pursuit of money doesn’t intrigue me in an ordinary way. It is afterall what drives most people to go to college to get the degree that will get the job that will pay all bills and for all the nice STUFF that they could live without if they so chose. It’s what makes someone agree, voluntarily to giving up hours and days of their lives to do work for an employer which in reality is not the way they would choose to spend the last week of their lives but do it anyway cause in return for giving up their limited life-hours they receive some paper called “money”.


I choose to not be a part of it. I’ve never liked working. No matter what the job is as long as it’s “work” it is guaranteed to suck. I could do the same things I do in my job and enjoy myself and feel great. But as soon as that fucking EMPLOYMENT motive enters my head I loath the same tasks.


It’s not satisfying.


Who am I trying to impress? I have trouble acting out tasks unless my motivation is driven by one of two things some personal admonishment/adoration or out of love for someone or something.


Crystal is not even what fucks you up. What fucks every meth head up in the end is the conflict between life on jib and the world that does not do jib. Emotional stress from caring loved ones, financial burdens from a lack of desire to work for an hourly wage job, compassionate neglect from the psychoticness of a jib relationship and alternatively the general brandishing from the non-jib community, and of course the phycial and mental punishment we put ourselves through during and after a period of highness.


Fraud is a self-fulfilling way to spend hours. Self-employment. Ingenuity and creative problem solving. Unlimited capital potential. Unspecified time commitment. No boss. No laws or rules. And the reward for all of this is usually money. Free money. As long as you don’t get caught. They players don’t like cheaters. Even though cheaters are obviously the ones brave enough to face danger and take the path of least resistance. Because you aren’t getting paid by the hour or by the task completed it’s really up to your imagination as to how much money you can make. I’ve already said that I don’t desire to be filthy rich. I’ve seen and experienced how money ruins people like jib ruins people. But everyone needs enough to survive. Enough to “progress” to another day. It’s the closest thing to a thought. Who wants to work a job, getting all caught up ina life of employment, giving virtually everything that was given to you at brith just to live. I want money enough to not have to think about it. But employment is worse than not having money at all. That is of course unless this employment is actually a good way to pass time so as to overcome that awful sensation of being paid by someone to do something.
