A current affairs news programmes are designed to inform us about certain events or people. However, through the use of selection of detail, structure and the reporter’s and presenter’s language, tone and attitude the audience’s interpretation of the events or people can be altered. In a story that appeared on Today Tonight these techniques were used to influence the viewer’s opinion. In the story, Rose Porteous held a charity event for a hospital and a Member of Parliament made accusations that the hospital had received none of the money and that Rose had used it to cover costs. Mrs Porteous is depicted negatively in the story. The audience views her as guilty and uneducated.

The audience’s interpretation of the people or events depicted in a current affair news story can be altered through the use of the reporter’s and the presenter’s tone, language and attitude. At the start of a news story the presenter delivers a short introduction to the story. In this case the presenter is Monika Kos and Rose Porteous is depicted negatively. This opinion can be formed with the help of the presenter. Kos’ tone towards Mrs Porteous is unsympathetic and accusing. This is evident because she places emphasis on certain words such as “clean” and “huge” when referring to how the money was spent on her Chandelier. This tone is much the same as the reporters, Miranda Eastman. However, her use of language focuses mainly on John Hyde’s point of view rather than Rose Porteous’. During the story she highlights Hyde’s accusations and seems to take his side. An example of this is when Eastman comments on the fact that Porteous “denied she had done wrong” and then comments on Hyde saying “15,000 dollars disappeared.” This bias is also evident with Eastman and Kos’ attitude towards Rose Porteous. The presenter’s attitude towards Mrs Porteous seems to be again unsympathetic and accusing. This attitude is much the same as Eastman’s’. This also influences our opinion because in general our society tends to respect and believe what news reporters and presenters say, so we adopt their attitude. Society also has other values, which are addressed in this story.

The story seems to play up on some of the values that dictate our society this causes the audience to form certain opinions. The audience’s values are honesty and essential services in relevance to this story. These values aid in depicting Rose Porteous negatively. For example Porteous is portrayed to be guilty of not giving the money to the hospital. Therefore because we value honesty we do not value dishonesty and view anyone who is dishonest negatively. Also, Porteous allegedly withheld money from a hospital so we view her disapprovingly because we need and value very highly our essential services.

Selection of detail is probably the most effective technique used in this story to alter our opinion of Rose Porteous. In the story, footage of Mrs Porteous is included at a press conference in her home. Today Tonight choose specific parts from the interview in which Mrs Porteous seems confused or when she has mixed up her words or is stuttering which makes her seem like a fool. This influences the viewer because we make our assertions on the information we are given and not what has been left out. Also in the story, footage of Mrs Porteous is included where she is seen at other charity events putting money in her till and walking around in expensive clothes. Other footage includes her massive wardrobe and mansion. These images that have been chosen to be included influence the viewer to regard Mrs Porteous as having lots of money. Therefore the viewer will perceive her even more negatively because they realise that she doesn’t need the money. Not only does the news story make Rose seem rich and greedy it also makes her seem like she is guilty through the use of selection of detail. Footage is incorporated in of her walking up the stairs away from the media talking and pointing; also during the interview she is only given the chance to defend herself once or twice. However, John Hyde is constantly viewed making accusations and backing them up with supposed evidence. Today Tonight neglected to interview anyone else who was involved in the charity event such as the choreographer who was supposedly paid for her services. If an interview similar to this one was included then the audience’s opinion would change once more. This shows that the audience’s opinion can be transformed by what footage of the people or events being depicted are selected for inclusion.

The structure of this footage and other aspects of the story also play a huge part in shaping our opinion of Rose Porteous. During the story it is basically Porteous saying one thing that makes her seem like a fool and then John Hyde standing up in Parliament delivering what seems to be clear and factual accusations and supporting them with supposed evidence. This pattern of Porteous then Hyde influences the audience’s perception of both of them. It makes Hyde seem like an educated man looking out for the well being of the hospital in question. This is because each time Porteous speaks Hyde has an answer for it. It makes Porteous seem like a gold digger who is uneducated and greedy because she is constantly seen in expensive clothes and making not much sense when she talks. It doesn’t matter what she says because the story is structured in such a way that Hyde has a comment, which opposes what she says. Therefore, we tend to side with Hyde’s point of view and the views of the station. Another way structure is used in this story is by changing the audience’s opinion from the start. The first images we receive of Rose are her mixing up her words and stuttering. Immediately we view her as uneducated and unsure. Because she is unsure we usually associate this with guilt and we think that she is guilty. These opinions stay with us throughout the story and do not change. Not only are we influenced right at the start but also right at the end. Porteous says, “I enjoy sitting there selling hamburgers”. This reinforces opinions that are accumulated throughout the story that she is simple-minded and this opinion stays with us even after the story has ended.

Whether a current affairs show deliberately sets out to persuade the audience or not the reality is that no news story can be without some sort of bias, which alters a viewers perception of events or people. In this case our perception of Rose Porteous is altered. We view her as simple-minded and guilty of what she has been accused of. Whether it is the presenter’s tone or the selection of footage that is included, each element of a news story effects our interpretation of an event or people. Consequently, in most circumstances we adopt the opinion of the news station.
