What is it about the character of Sherlock Holmes that a Victorian readership found so engaging? How do you account for the enduring appeal of the Baker Street detective?

Sherlock Holmes. Very few names are as evocative as that one. And yet there are many questions and speculations surrounding the creation of that marvellous fictional detective. It has been said that the only way to gain any true knowledge of Holmes is through his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The Sherlock Holmes stories changed the crime fiction genre in a significant way. Most writers base their work around the best selling books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and many aspects of crime fiction, which to us as modern readers seem cliched, were brand new ideas to the Victorian readers of these stories at the time. Although many other detective stories are also excellent, there is nothing quite like the original Holmes stories. As we read through the many adventures of Holmes and his ever faithful companion Dr. Watson, we are also led through their colourful, mostly enigmatic, lives including Dr. Watsons two marriages and the time in between them. Holmes life includes his opium addiction, and subsequent recovery, his encounter with Irene Adler and finally, his retirement to the English Channel coast as a beekeeper!

Modern critics would argue that it is less than ‘serious’ literature, but still it enjoyed by so many people who are so entranced by Sherlock Holmess character and adventures in London.

Write my Essay on What is it about the character of sherlock holmes that a modern audience finds so engaging? for me

The books are still hugely popular world wide now, so why does the character of Sherlock Holmes engage and appeal to so many people over a hundred years later?

Sherlock Holmes is a vivid character, full of eccentricities and usual habits. He likes to be proved right and is very reliant upon self approval, and the admiration of those around him, to feel that his work has been worthwhile. His motivation is simply to prove his worth and intelligence. He has no care for money or rewards and quotes ‘As to reward, my profession is its reward...’. His friend Dr. Watson, who chronicles Holmess work, said Sherlock only worked on the most unusual cases and he worked ‘...as he did rather for the love of his art, than for the requirement of wealth...’. It shows he cannot be bribed and works honestly to achieve his goal.

Holmes wrote books about random subjects such as tobacco ash and he can tell a species of snake as soon as he looks at it. He’s an excellent boxer, singlestick player and swordsman and an expert in almost every subject imaginable, which seems a little unrealistic, but that adds to the charm and appeal of the novels. He uses this extensive knowledge in his investigations. He only takes on the most strangest and unfathomable cases to prove to himself, and others, that he is a highly intelligent man. Holmes quotes in the Five Orange Pips, When I glance over my notes and records of the Sherlock Holmes’ cases between the years 8 and 0, I am faced by so many which present strange and interesting features, that it is no easy matter to know which to choose and which to leave..”

He only takes on the most perplexing cases to use his knowledge to the extent and to satisfy his need to be praised. The culprit may seem obvious to us now as we are so used to crime fiction as it is in the media all the time, but to a Victorian audience it was a relatively new kind of fiction and they enjoyed guessing and being surprised at the end when the criminal was revealed.

The character of the inspector is also rather significant to people’s interest. From our first encounter with Holmes in Conan Doyles introductory novel, A Study in Scarlet, and his meeting with Dr. Watson, with whom he shared rooms, we are fascinated by the uniqueness of Holmess eccentric character, his incredible intelligence in all things concerning the science of deduction, his total dedication to his craft, and the enormous resources of energy and determination he calls on to solve problems no one else can master. He has many outlandish habits that we may find amusing. To the Victorians, however, he was very much a character that they would all like to meet. He conducts his work with intricate detail and attention and he is always successful at the end of each case.

Sherlock Holmes is so absorbed by his work, he has no time for women and sees them as a man’s downfall. His weird habits are amusing and somewhat ridiculous, but none the less engaging to a reader. For example, in The Speckled Band, Holmes sits with a pillow over his face whilst listening to the person who has come to him to ask for his help. He also sweeps around in a hat and cape, which have become something of a symbol of the detective genre. His unconventional ways and cleverness sets him apart from characters in novels at the time of the book being written and immediately engages an audience.

Sherlock Holmes needs to be praised and to show off to an audience. This is the more human side to him and he needs his companion, Watson, with him, helping him with the cases. Watson plays no part in the conclusion of his investigations, but Holmes relies on him as his ally and chronicler, who records all the adventures they have. Watson is his audience, which Sherlock likes playing to, showing an assured faith in himself. His relationship with Watson is very formal, even though they spend most of their time together. Sherlock never calls Watson by his actual name, John, and always calls him something like “My Dear friend...”.

Holmes is very detailed in his investigation and it is always scientifically approached. He uses the method of deduction, thinking through different scenarios, and eventually coming up with the right one and catching the criminal. It was this passion for overall scientific and forensic comprehension that led Holmes into unusual analyses and made him a 1th Century “Renaissance man” an expert specializing in everything. He sees everything and misses nothing. He notices even small details, such as dirt on someone’s coat and can tell which side of a cart they sat on and what type of cart it was. He notices s bell pull that’s a fake and walks up and down a room with a magnifying glass, studying the floor for clues. In his investigations, the little things are infinitely the most important. His knowledge is immense and remains implanted in his mind like his own portable encyclopaedia for him to consult when he needs to.

Racism in To Kill a Mockingbird

Have you ever encountered a situation that dealt with race? I think everyone has in some way or form. Maybe someone of a different race was treated unfairly just because theyre a different color. Or someone could have been given special privileges because of their race. There are many more examples than what I have listed, and each of the others could and probably is a form of racism.

Do my essay on To kill a mockingbird CHEAP !

I looked up the definition of racism in the dictionary. There it said racism was a belief that some races are by nature superior to others-, which leads to discrimination. I agree with this definition but I personally would say that racism is to treat people in certain ways in accordance to their skin color.

Although racism doesnt appear to have the same effect on me now, as it would have in the past, it is still a big factor in our world today. With the worldly events right now, I definitely think that people of a Middle Eastern descend are being discriminated against. African Americans are seen to be less important in the eyes of some white people, still. Whites are excluded from certain social groups and privileges because theyre white. Mexicans arent given equal privileges and are often taken advantage of. These all are some ways myself and people around me are affected by racism.

In To Kill a Mockingbird, I can think of two situations of racism that stand out. The first is when Calpurnia takes Scout and Jem to her church. Scout and Jem were told to go home and stay with their own kind. They were judged strictly by their race and how the people at Cals church felt about whites. The second situation dealt with Tom Robinson. Although it was clear that Tom did not rape Mayella, he was found to be guilty because he was black.

There are many cases of racism everywhere you look. I definitely think peoples mindsets about color are destroying relationships and the situation, it would be what Atticus told Scout in the book. He said to crawl into the body of other people and try to see it from their point or view. If everyone did this, maybe they would think before they acted and a lot of racism could be prevented

DEATH BE NOT PROUD

English Literature Notes - Laura and Jane

JOHN DONNE

How meaning is made through context of John’s Life

Cheap University Papers on jon donne

Born 157 London.

Died 161 London

METAPHYSICAL POET

Group of poets in the 1600s that were led by Donne.

Examined the nature of our existence, truth and knowledge. Very philosophical.

New perspectives. Very different to flowery Petrarchan poetry of those times.

EFFECT Talking to death was very original idea in his poems, personifying Death

A breakthrough in english literature history.

RELIGIOUS

Belief in Christianity and eternal life after death in Heaven.

Dean of St Pauls.

Wrote many sermons, focusing on death and repentance of sins.

EFFECT His belief in heaven, from biblical texts and teachings of the Anglican Church is portrayed in Death Be Not Proud.

METAPHYSICAL CONCEITS

Extended metaphors with subtle and complex imagery.

DEATH

Preoccupation with it in a lot of his poems.

May stem from the death of his father when he was 4 years old.

His wife Anne More passed away after miscarrying.

Her death supposedly inspired his Holy Sonnets.

In those times, the plague was rampant. Life expectancy was low.

Looked to the afterlife, something to hope for because life could be very dreary.

16 became ill. Facing death and coming to terms with it.

How Meaning Is Made

FORM

Form Devine Sonnet

Devine = to do with the Heavenly Father, God. Beauty, purity.

˶ When we know it is a divine sonnet we already have expectations of what the

sonnet will be about.

˶ Knowing it is a divine sonnet may help uncover obscure meanings.

IMAGERY Eg. Metaphor

“And better than thy stroake, why swell’st thou then”

Creates image of something literally swelling

Personification = metaphor in which inanimate objects or an abstraction is given

the characteristics of a living creature. Eg in ‘Death Be Not Proud’, Death is

personified as a human being.

“And death shall be no more; Death thou shalt die.”

˶ “…transforms death from a natural occurrence into a human adversary capable of being over thrown”

DICTION

Diction = choice of words in speech or writing.

Eg 1 Period words such as ‘thou’, ‘thy’, ‘thee’, ‘art’.

EFFECT Gives poem antique feel and places reader in the context of the time.

Eg Suffix ‘st’ on the end of particular words, ‘swell’st’, ‘think’st’.

EFFECT This suffix belongs to a particular period and so also sets time and place for poem.

Eg Play on word ‘sleep’.

Means death…

“From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee”

Means literally sleeping…

“And poppies, or charmes, can make us sleepe as well.”

EFFECT Causes reader to concentrate more on making understanding of a poem.

˶ Diction can make the meaning of a play even more obscure, but when the context

and meaning of sleep is known, then in-fact diction adds considerably to the understanding of complex poems.

SYMBOLISM

Eg line 1

“One short sleep past, wee wake eternally”

Once again the play on the word sleep

Sleep symbolises death Eternally symbolises ever lasting.

˶ Symbolism helps us to understand a poems meaning by using well-known things,

i.e. sleep, and likening them to a similar meaning.

TONE

Tone condescending and superior

Dramatic Address Persona speaking to their subject.

In the case of ‘Death Be Not Proud’ persona is speaking to Death.

Eg line

“Thou art slave to Fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,”

˶ Because John Donne uses dramatic address, we as a reader adopt his tone and regard death in the same way that he does, and we believe what Donne is saying and fill in the gaps with our own ideas and assume that this is that point Donne was trying to make.

What do we mean by the public sphere and what are its main functions?

The Public Sphere is a phrase coined by German philosopher Jürgen Habermas. It refers to all the mediums and places that people use to express and devise opinions and views. It is these places that people have formed democratic society on and how they continue to be maintained is through the continued use of Public Spheres. This is shown by Habermas writings;

a realm of our social life in which something approaching public opinion can be formed. Access is guaranteed to all citizens. A portion of the public sphere assemble to form a public body

The idea of the Public Sphere also strongly promotes the idea of free speech within society. The Public Sphere was a forum where people could express freely their views with others on matters of social concern. The use of the Public Sphere was not there to air personal issues, but instead to raise more general topics that could effect any important executive decisions that needed to be made concerning the public. Issues raised in public sphere usually where concerning politics, culture and society. According to Jakob Linaa Jensen of the University of Aarhus, Denmark there are four main functions of the public sphere, these being Agenda setting, problem solving, deliberation and defining common values.

Cheap Custom Essays on What do we mean by the public sphere and what are its main functions?

Agenda setting is the task of finding out what is important to those within the public circle. This could be anything from town maintenance to federal laws. Daily views concerning these subjects are expressed and criticized, in Television, newspapers and other mediums and simply through one on one communication at a more traditional and primal level.

Problem solving links closely into this. It takes a balance of opinion to determine the solutions required, and once again a use of various mediums can help to show public views. While more centralized Medias, such as television and radio allow for fewer views, the internet allows for simultaneous and unfiltered opinions from a wider range of people.

Deliberation and defining common values is generally left up to fewer people, and in this case usually the government or another appointed body. Because of the many views of people it is difficult to please all and that is why it is left to these people to make decisions. However it is also this step that is the public spheres major flaw. Because effectively everybody gets to have their say, it will rarely be possible for all to come to a unanimous decision on something. And because these bodies that are meant to represent the people will never be foolproof and without their own personal agendas it is difficult to ever truly achieve a working a cohesive Public Sphere.

The public sphere is what much of modern western culture is based on, and it is strongly rooted in democracy, and with democracy, as with the idea of the Public Sphere there will always be unfixable faults within it that will hinder the true creation of the “realm” in which a true public opinion can be created.

The media is the public sphere in contemporary western world. Discuss.

Habermas’s accounts of how the Public Sphere was originally approached, in ideas such as the public forum or town meeting may no longer apply but there are direct correlations between those forms of public sphere and today’s mass media. Radio and television are all forms of public forum that allow people to express views. In more recent years the internet has allowed for an escalated use of the original public forum to allow almost all citizens to easily and freely express themselves. And because the internet disguises the age, gender, ethnicity, location and social-standing of the speakers it gives all people an equal ground. Because of the vastness of the internet, and more generally other forms of media, the morals and principles of various peoples can be recognized and more easily understood, and therefore various points of views can be rationalized by opposing parties, so that a more concise and fair opinion can be made by a more unified public.

It is through the use of mass media that people are informed and often make decisions on a variety of topics. Sometimes this information can be tainted with the ideals of other more powerful people. But it is still the cornerstone of the modern democratic society that allows for these sources of information to run.

With this however we do run into problems. The media tends to be used as a way for certain groups, and powerful individuals to influence and manipulate the way people think about thinks, and thus weakens the value of the public sphere. While the internet has certainly given a new and much deeper level to the idea of the public sphere in relation to everybody having a chance to react and give opinions on things, slightly older forms of media such as Television, Press and Radio are still traditionally run by only a few of the world’s people. This control brings emphasis to certain peoples views more so then others, such as through Rupert Murdoch’s outwardly right-wing news channel Fox News Network. This example shows how it is still only a few people at the very top that control much of the worlds media, and in doing so manipulate and control much of the worlds public sphere.

While it may seem simplistic to distill the whole public sphere down to simply the mass media, because there are still such dominant players in the world of media who continue to have there own personal agendas, forms of communication such as the internet work hard to give every person, no matter how important a voice.

Every visual text can be read as a story, but the stories that are made depend on a person’s cultural literacy. Discuss referring to any two photographs below.

A visual work is something that is not written. It can be a painting, a photograph or moving images. Each one of those visual works tells a story. This story is very dependant on persons cultural literacy of the issues involved in it. And therefore one person may be able to dissect and appreciate work on a much deeper level then others. A person’s dependence on their own cultural literacy to understand a piece of work will vary depending on their age, sex, race and location. Cultural literacy is something that is acquired and negotiated over time.

Photograph ‘A’ shows a woman taking a moment away from her toiling to have her photo taken. The most striking element of the photo is that it is a woman in that has been placed in this situation. Traditionally it is the man who does the laborious work, and therefore a cultural literacy of this typecast of woman and their roles is required to understand the photos point. This distinction is also made more evident through the fact that the woman is holding a hoe, or other farm instrument. This confirms that the woman is in fact working on the property and this rule out the option of her simply being a tourist or visitor. The meaning systems required to properly understand the context in which the focus of this photo has been placed also requires a knowledge and literacy of the fashion and figure of the person within the photo. Their choice of clothing also brings into question their financial situation that also raises issues of her purpose and reason on the farm.

Photograph ‘C’ similarly shows a women in a possible out of place context. The woman in the photo is shown in a diner or restaurant uniform and is depressingly looking into the camera. Her expression shows that she feels she doesn’t deserve to be in this situation. And with closer inspection, her hair and wearing of earrings and jewelry seem to show a more glamorous side of her that is being belittled by her job and uniform. The reason she feels put down by the job is because of her age. She is clearly an older lady and if this were a photo of a teenager conclusions such as the one made above would not so easily be made.

Visual texts are a much deeper and more exploratory way of defining and understanding an issue, as mentioned above with the photos. However to quote Schirato and Yell;

“Visual mediums are sometimes privileged over other mediums because they seem to be able to represent reality in an unmediated way. Visual mediums, however, selectively reproduce, rather than faithfully mirror, reality.”

This conclusion may diminish the view of visual texts, but it also reinforces the requirements on cultural literacy to understand all works and come to conclusions on the validity of them. This is done through logical dissection of society and ones own knowledge, literacy and study of intertexts, for works visual or otherwise.

How do meanings change across cultures? Discuss referring to any two of the photographs below.

Meaning is “Something that one wishes to convey, especially by language” and it is this simple form of communication that can be so easily diluted and misinterpreted when a meaning is passed through various cultures. Culture is “The totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought.” From culture to culture different belief systems run, and therefore things can be taken and understood to mean different things to different people.

For example in photo ‘F’ where a women is seen in the seat of a car, presumably about to drive it, this may be seen in different cultures to mean a variety of things. In the strict Islamic culture of Saudi Arabia, women are expected to firstly wear a Hijab that covers them from head to toe, except for small slits for the eye. This image of would not be accepted in such a culture because it is clearly showing a women in what western culture would consider ‘normal clothing’. This point can also be made about photo ‘E’. Photograph ‘E’ also depicts a woman handling food in public with both the left and right hand. The significance of this is that “the left hand is used in lieu of toilet paper. If one attempts to use it for anything else, it is considered a personal affront.” This simple example shows how a seemingly innocent photo to western cultures could be perceived as offensive and disrespectful.

Another point relating directly to both images is that the women is by themselves and for Islamic culture women are expected to be accompanied by men when shopping and women are not allowed to drive at all in Saudi Arabia and therefore such a portrayal of a women in the drivers seat of a car would be misunderstood and ill appreciated in such a country.

Meanings are a very volatile aspect of communications and they are continually changing. A meaning can loose any respect and credibility as a culture changes and thus influence a variety of things. Meaning systems develop over time, and in the case of such religious meaning systems as the Islamic belief have, it can occur over thousands of years.

STUDIO ART

Work Brief

I would like to explore the sport of skateboarding. I would like to explore the religion that is skateboarding and how the public perceives skateboarders. I will look at the techniques of skateboarding and the skateboarding fashions. I will focus on the skateboarders themselves and the obstacles they use in their sport.

Being a skateboarder myself is one of the reasons I chose this topic. I am a regular at the local skate park and I’m a friend of many people who are heavily into the sport. I am aware of the incredible sporting ability of some of the skateboarders and the way they are not taken seriously by the public because skateboarding is not a typical sport like football or cricket. My intention is to show visions of skateboarders in action, performing the incredible stunts they do.

Buy cheap Studio Art Workbrief for Skateboarding term paper

My art pieces are inspired by the skateboarders I know and skateboarding photographers like Julian Choi from Thrasher Magazine. Julian Choi takes action photos of skateboarders doing dangerous tricks on obstacles like stairs, handrails and ledges. The angles the photos are taken from inspired me to choose a topic that involves skateboarding images.

Friends of mine that skateboard inspired me more than anything else to choose skateboarding as my studio art topic. Some of these people I have known since they could hardly stand up on a board and now they are amazing.

I think of skateboarding as being a very personal thing and I would even say it has got a spiritual side to it. Its not like football or basketball which are team sports. Skateboarding is an independent activity, which means you can do it by your self, whenever you want. While most of the time skateboarding is done with friends and a few laughs, a lot of people use it as a distraction or a cure for any problems in their lives. It involves deep concentration, which washes away any hassles that are troubling you.

Loving the look of images of skateboarding tricks being done was what inspired me to produce drawings of skateboarders myself. I see art in the photos in skateboarding magazines and skateboarding posters and thats how I came up with the idea to produce images like these ones using a number of different materials.

For my final piece I am going to copy one of my drawings onto a wooden skateboard deck. I think an image produced on a wooden deck would work very well with the right media would look very effective as my final piece.

Nationalism

Nationalism means devotion to one’s nation. To some or most nationalistic people, this means that national interests, security, etc. are more important than international considerations. It involves the process of making a nation or nation-state into a definable country.

But the concept of nationalism differs in different cultures. I will mention some of the controversial concepts of nationalism of different people.

1. Arab Nationalism or Islamic Nationalism their concept of nationalism is very much rooted to their religion which is Islam. They say that “it is the nature of Islam to rule and not to be ruled.” With today’s Globalization, for them it is actually Americanization, they Arabs harbor bitter contempt for the Western countries, especially U.S.A. This is because the modernization of these countries goes against all of the ethics and cultures of Islam. To them the West is corrupt, and immoral.

. Japanese Nationalism - The Japanese people believed they were the supreme race, not only in East Asia, but throughout the entire world. This feeling of superiority and prejudice over the rest of the world helped push their belief of domination over East Asia.

The Japanese people did not declare themselves to be physically nor intellectually superior to others. Rather they declared themselves to be, “inherently more virtuous”. The Japanese considered themselves to be pure. They believed that they were purer than other cultures they were exposed to. The Japanese were concerned with and how the ‘Yamato race’ was unique amongst races and cultures of the world”. The Japanese believed that this uniqueness was what made them superior to other cultures around the world. The Japanese had a strong sense that led them to believe that their superiority was derived from heredity. The Japanese believed that the only pure people of the world were the ones that belonged to the Yamato race.

If one was not and insider, a member of the Yamato race, they were looked upon as being an outsider or outcast of society. Their purity was based on belonging to this race.

The Japanese had a vision of a Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity sphere in during the years of world war two. The vision of this Co-Prosperity Sphere was a unification of Asian nations led by the Japanese to free themselves from Western powers and ideals. Because of their nationalistic beliefs, the Japanese believed it was their right to rule over Asia because of the purity of the Yamato race and their belief in their ancestry as direct descendants of the sun goddess Amaterasu.

. White Nationalism - White Nationalism is a variant of racial nationalism which holds that those people racially defined as white constitute a nation. It is important to remember that race is not considered a biological concept by mainstream anthropologists. It is a social construction.

There are several different forms of white nationalism in the United States. One form, which might usefully be dubbed Pan-Aryanism, contends that white people (oft of northern European descent) in whichever land they live, are all part of one nation. By this account, white South Africans and Australians, white Germans and English and Americans are all one nation (without regard to territory). A second form, known as white American nationalism, holds that white people in the United States are one white nation among other nations. In both cases, Americans of African decent and other people of color are regarded as aliens, not members or natural citizens of the white nation. The United States (and its federal government) is regarded as a multi-racial or multi-national state.

A Guide to Effective Stress Management

Three key points explained in this article are positive and negative aspects of stress, symptoms and ten ways of effective stress management. Stress is something that takes us out of our comfort zone and forces us to change and adapt.

Although Stress is a negative word but not all stress is bad. By reading this article, I realized that if I want to go to leadership level I must have some stress to develop intellectually, emotionally or physically, still it should be manageable to avoid worse effects on my life. We should understand the psychological and physiological aspects of stress to manage it successfully and in turn, create a positive impact on our physical and psychological life. A persons genetic make-up, diet and coping strategies are a few stress controlling factors. It is important to understand that acute stress can be good in small doses to keep us alert, challenged and improve our performance as it takes us out of comfort zone and forces us to adapt to new circumstances which is true for me also. I feel myself more active and energetic after starting my masters degree program and having more stress however, I am learning to manage constantly changing priorities.

Help with essay on Why a Graduate Degree

Different people may handle the same types of stress differently still some physical and psychological reactions are consistent among individuals. As I observed in our first class, of masters degree program most of the people were at the same level of stress but the ways to manage and survive might be different for everyone. Studies shows that the stress, that is not managed properly can lead to serious physical problems, such as myocardial ischemia (reduced blood flow to the heart), high blood pressure, premature arterial aging, immune system deficiencies, and vitamin and bone density depletion. Therefore, it is very important to find and implement ways of effective stress management to avoid such problems.

Symptoms and suggested steps of Stress Management

Some common symptoms of Stress Management are sleeplessness, nausea or upset stomach, fatigue or lethargic feeling, frequent headaches, teeth grinding, susceptibility to illness, lack of concentration, lack of clarity, anxiousness, impatience, irritability and no sense of humor. While all of the above symptoms cause concern, the most important symptom from author’s prospective is the inability to make decisions which has a adverse effect on the leadership role, they fail as leaders long before the physical effects of stress take their toll.

The first step in stress management is to identify the causes and try to eliminate them. Article explains ten steps of stress management. The steps in brief are Mental Preparation (prepare for some known causes, Mind Over What Matters (meditation), Share the Load (give some load to peers), Work (it) Out (physical exercise), Dont Play too Hard (some relaxation), Dont Forget to Breathe (The benefit of this breathing

Technique), Eat to Win (balanced diet), Say No to Drugs, Sleep it off (sleep well), It is not as Bad as You Think (priorities the items to think). From these steps presented in the article I think that currently I am applying some of them in my stressful life but it will be helpful to apply rest also at times of critical stress.

Conclusion

After presenting this information my first critical thinking question to the class would be, what steps each individual will take to manage their level of stress to successfully complete the masters degree program besides having other commitments in life. Second question is that although some times stress cannot be avoided, what can you gain from stress. I have learned from this article, meaning of stress, some of its possible symptoms, effects and ways to manage it.

Taming of the Shrew

Marriage

In the book Taming of the Shrew by Shakespeare, we see marriage as being a bargain kind of thing. Shakespeare creates a marriage where the husband is making money for the sake of wedding a daughter. This would never happen nowadays, the marriage relationships aren’t just taken for granted. Now when you get married, you are vowing to spend the rest of your life with another person because you are in love. Not for money.

The play focuses on how marriage affects not just the lovers themselves, but also their parents, their servants, and their friends. You can see this in Petruccio and Kate’s relationship. The reason they got married was because their father was unhappy with how his daughter was, and because Bianca would have never been able to go on further with love or relationships unless her elder sister was married.

Cheap University Papers on Taming Of The Shrew Marriage Essay

Also, the play shows money being a big factor in who marries whom. Lucentio wins Biancas heart, but he is given permission to marry her only after he is able to convince Baptista that he is filthy rich. If Hortensio had offered more money, Hortensio would have married Bianca, whether or not she loved Lucentio. In today’s society money can be a factor, but it doesn’t determine who is the bride or who is the groom.

At the end of the play, Kate recites this speech.

Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper,

Thy head, thy sovereign, one that cares for thee,

And for thy maintenance commits his body

To painful labour both by sea and land,

To watch the night in storms, the day in cold,

Whilst thou liest warm at home, secure and safe,

And craves no other tribute at thy hands

But love, fair looks, and true obedience,

Too little payment for so great a debt.

This symbolizes Kate’s trust and maturity at the end of the play. She says this to let everyone know how the relationship should really be and how the relationships were back then. In today’s world, the husband is a mutual partner to be the head, and to be the keeper. Back then the husband was just the lord, and the keeper. Now it is a mutual agreement between two partners. With this speech being at the end of the book, that shows how Shakespeare is modeling the new way of marriage.

Now that everyone is going by the new ways of the world, you won’t see any more bargaining for marriage, but you will see mutual agreements. There is no ruler, and nobody has more power than the other does. Everything is equal, which is way different than it was back then. People now realize how wrong it was to treat the woman like trash, but some people don’t. The people that don’t are the ones that go to jail because of abuse. We have laws, and we have rules that make everything equal now.

As President Bush prepares to address the American people on the war in Iraq, the country has been unusually quiet, an official said Sunday, a day after two surface-to-air missiles were fired at a coalition aircraft leaving an airport in the capital.

It was not known who fired the missiles, and military spokesman Lt. Col. George Krivo acknowledged that it was difficult to secure Baghdad International Airport against such attacks.

This is not the first time that such weapons have been used in this area ... this is not an unusual occurrence. However, its something that we are circumspect of and we will take appropriate action to ensure it doesnt endanger coalition aircraft, he said during a briefing.

You could fire a shoulder-fired missile from anywhere from 0 or 0 kilometers from the airport, so to say that you can prevent that from occurring, Im not sure that thats accurate, he said.

Cheap Custom Essays on Don't have one yet.

Commercial flights to and from Iraq have been suspended since the 11 Gulf War. U.S. administrator L. Paul Bremer had said he hoped to get the airports in Baghdad and Basra, Iraqs second largest city, reopened by mid-September.

However, the reopening of Basra airport has been delayed by a month to Oct. 1, said British Capt. Hisham Hilawi.

The delay was caused by a combination of factors including completing details with civil aviation authorities, airlines needing more time to generate business and ensuring the airport had adequate hotel facilities, Hilawi said from Basra.

There is limited access to Baghdad airport, which is used by coalition forces and a few cargo companies.

Krivo said there were 1 attacks on coalition forces in the last 4 hours, but no soldiers have been killed or wounded in the past two days.

Its been unusually quiet, he said.

Since Bush declared major combat over on May 1, 148 U.S. soldiers have died as coalition forces were attacked on average 15 times daily. In the major fighting of the war 18 soldiers died.

Bushs address comes amid mounting criticism of the U.S. occupation of Iraq from lawmakers, anti-war protesters and Democratic presidential candidates, mainly because of the insecurity in the country that still bristles with weapons ranging from mortars, to missiles to rocket-propelled grenades.

At the end of a three-day tour of Iraq Saturday, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld acknowledged Iraq was not as safe, but said the fault does not lie with American forces. He said it was up to the Iraqis to provide American forces with the intelligence needed to stop attacks and lawlessness.

Krivo said that coalition forces had carried out 1 raids and detained 15 people in the last 4 hours and they continue to hunt down those attacking them.

In Saddam Husseins home village of Owja near Tikrit, a U.S. reconnaissance team from the 4th Infantry Divisions 1st Brigade reported four explosions late Saturday, one of which blew up near the patrol, said Maj. Josslyn Aberle, a spokeswoman. Another hit a house belonging to an Iraqi interpreter for U.S. forces, and third hit a civilian car. There were no casualties.

U.S. soldiers around Tikrit, 10 miles north of Baghdad, also discovered a cache of weapons and ammunition hidden in a row of bunkers, dubbed by res idents as the RPG shopping center.

It included wire-guided surface-to-surface Sager missiles, 15 rocket-propelled grenades and 6 mortar shells, Aberle said.

Also, troops captured a suspected Saddam loyalist alleged to have carried out a grenade attack last month at a childrens hospital in which three soldiers were killed, the U.S. Central Command reported Sunday.

The Aug. 11 attack was believed to have involved someone who threw a grenade on the soldiers from the upper floors of the hospital in Baqouba, 45 miles northeast of Baghdad.

The suspect in the attack was captured in a Saturday raid but was not identified by the military. Ten people were captured in the sweep in Baqouba that also netted U.S. a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, hand grenades, blasting caps and a detonation cord for a roadside bomb.

Krivo said coalition forces are increasingly being attacked from a distance by mortars and remote-controlled homemade bombs.

Whether or not thats a change in strategy, I cant judge. It certainly seems to us from just looking at the evidence that there is a change in tactics on the ground, he said.

Since mid-August four car bombs have killed scores of people in Baghdad and the holy southern city of Najaf.

On Sunday, the Dubai-based satellite channel, al-Arabiya, aired a tape by Abdul Rahman Al-Najdi, an alleged senior propagandist and financier of Osama bin Ladens al-Qaida group. The voice on the tape denied that the terrorist group was involved in the Najaf bombing, which killed Ayatollah Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim and between 85 and 15 other people.

Our aim is to fight the Americans and kill them, al

While trying to understand the reasons for her mother wanting Jing-Mei to be great, Jing-Mei discovers the real meaning of two kinds. “Two Kinds” is written by Amy Tan. Jing-Mei, a young Chinese girl, grew up in America with her mother, a member of the Joy Luck Club. Through this, Jing-Mei’s mother pushes into being a prodigy. With this, her mother has the idea of Jing-Mei playing the piano.

Initially, Jing-Mei doesn’t have the drive to succeed as her mother does. Her mother has many ideas for her to succeed. At first, it was to be a Chinese Shirley Temple. Then, it was anything out of Ripley’s Believe it or not, or Reader’s Digest. Jing-Mei’s mother would also give her testsbut she failed them all. Eventually. Jing-Mei began to perform listlessly and pretend to be bored. Then, when her mother saw a little Chinese girl playing the piano on the ED Sullivan Show, she got the same idea for Jing-Mei.

After learning to play the piano, Jing-Mei learns easy ways to get out of practicing. As she took lessons from Mr. Chong, who was deaf, Jing-Mei found out that he was just like Beethoven. Jing-Mei discovers that she could fool him and make it look like she was playing and get away with mistakes. If she hit the wrong key, Jing-Mei wouldn’t correct herself. She was determined not to try.

At the talent show, Jing-Mei’s practicing habits show, and she truly learns what her mother wants. She was supposed to play “Pleading Child.” In getting ready for the show, Jing-Mei would cheat and never really listen to what she was playing. When it came to the recital, Jing-Mei was so confident that she could pull it off that she started hitting wrong notes and realizing it. She had felt her mother’s shame. As a result of the talent show massacre, Jing-Mei didn’t want to play the piano anymore. Then, when her mother wants her to practice, she decides that she defiantly won’t.

Help with essay on cultural beliefs

As an adult, having her mother offer her the piano again, Jing-Mei appreciates the encouragement given by her mother. Instead of throwing the piano away, she has it tuned and taken care of. This shows that Jing-Mei has respect as one of two kinds of people. There are ones who try and ones who don’t. Jing-Mei is a little of both.

Moving to a new environment and adjusting to a new school is a dreadful experience for almost everyone, especially for myself. In the middle of my freshman year of high school, I moved to Warner Robins and enrolled at Warner Robins High School. On my first day of school, I asked a student where the main office was located and with the directions given, I ended up in the band room on the second floor. I was constantly ridiculed because of my frizzy hair and short figure. One guy told me that I reminded him of his Ciao a, and for about a week students walked by me and said “ Yo quiero taco bell.” A girl in my economics class told me that I was ugly and that maybe a little bit of make up might help. It was very hard to make friends because my peers had already developed “clicks.” It seemed like everyone had been best friends since kindergarten. When the lunch bell rang, I went straight to the bathroom and hid in one of the stalls until lunch was over, because I was afraid of eating by myself. I did not talk to anyone until almost a month after I started attending Warner Robins High.

Then one day during lunch, I met a girl named Sabrina in the bathroom, and she asked me why I was always in the bathroom. I told her it was because people made fun of me and I didn’t want to eat by myself. Sabrina assured me that I was nothing to be made fun of and invited me to sit at her lunch table. She became my very first friend in Georgia.

Sabrina taught me how to ignore the childish comments and helped me to believe I was a beautiful person. She showed me how to wear make up and how to straighten my hair. She helped me to be outgoing and helped me to gain the confidence I needed to get through high school. Sabrina believed in me like no one else ever had.

By my junior year in high school, I had become this person I was comfortable with, pretty, charming, with an average grade point average. I’d made more friends by that time and although Sabrina and I were not as close as we were, we remained friends and hung out when we could. On January , 001, a good friend of Sabrina’s and mine was in a fatal car accident. From then on, Sabrina was never the same. Not only had she lost a close friend, but a few months later her parents divorced. At a time when she needed her parents the most, they weren’t there. Sabrina’s father was too wrapped up in his new relationship and her mother was a partier who left Sabrina home alone for days at a time. One night her mother came home so drunk that Sabrina had to take her to the Emergency Room due to alcohol poisoning.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Narrative

I was there for Sabrina the best way I knew how, but things became so bad that she turned to drugs. That is when our friendship began to weaken. I tried so hard not to give up on Sabrina, but she met a guy and fell into the wrong crowd. I was pushed away. She sat two rows in front of me in our fifth period class, the beginning of our senior year. She looked awful! Her skin was yellow and she was so skinny. I tried talking to her in class, but she pretended not to hear me. I tried calling Sabrina’s mother, but she was never home, and Sabrina’s father moved away with his new girlfriend. This girl, who I had admired so much, was losing control of her life and there was there was nothing I could do to help her.

On Feb 1, 00, approximately one month before Sabrina’s eighteenth birthday, and three months before graduating high school, Sabrina died of an overdose of anti-depressant drugs. When I’d heard what happened, my initial reaction was denial. There was no way my seventeen-year-old friend could be dead. Nothing like this happens to me. Then it went from denial to anger towards myself. What if I was there more or if I had gotten Sabrina some help, like a counselor, maybe she would still be alive? During Sabrina’s memorial service when Sabrina’s father never showed up, I realized her death wasn’t my fault. I was there when nobody else was, and I never gave up. When I saw her lying there, she looked so peaceful. I knew she was in a much better place now. My mother once told me that there would be one person I will meet who will impact my life forever. Sabrina is that one person who has impacted my life. Not because she was a young teen who had died of a drug overdose, but for the compassionate, capable, confident person she’s helped me to become.

Positivism is a philosophical concept and refers to a particular set of assumptions about the world and about appropriate ways of studying it¡¨ (McNeill, 185). It assumes that there are laws that govern the operations of the social world and is objective and value free. Therefore, it has little regard to the subjective state of individual. Data collected through this approach is usually objective and in form of statistics. However, this approach will not be used in this case as we need to understand how receptive are the employees to the new implementation of flexible benefits. Current practice in the company only allows employees to claim certain amount of their medical expenses with a cap. They are restricted to only their own medical claims. Recently, company has decided to change its policy and implement flexible benefits. Flexible benefits scheme allows employees to allocate their points to a basket of choices according to their needs. This benefits mainly working women with families as this allows them to choose options that include their families. To understand how receptive the employees are, especially the working women, to this new scheme, company has decided to hire a researcher to find out. Phenomenological approach will be used instead of positivistic approach as it helps us understand the human behaviour of the participant¡¦s own frame of mind. Data collected will be subjective and qualitative as it concentrates on presenting the quality way of life described rather than presenting statistics.

Feminist perspective will be the research methodology that helps us to understand if flexible benefits is acceptable for working women since it is the main concern for them. This approach is of contrast to the traditional approach where focus is on men. Moreover, feminist perspective is based on the experience of women and the research will benefit women instead of men. This perspective also seeks to restore the balance by researching on women¡¦s lives.

In order to understand more on how employees view the new implementation, focus groups and in-depth interviews will be the two chosen methods. Focus group interview is an unstructured, free flowing interview with a small group of people (Zikmund, 000). It is not a rigidly constructed question and answer session but done in a flexible format which encourage people to share their views and feelings. The ideal size will be about eight to ten people whom are randomly selected. However, this session is to understand their views towards flexible benefits, women with children should be the focus. One provision is that there should be no superior in the same group with the employees so as to stimulate more and truthful discussion. Secondly, the interviewees must understand the purpose of the discussion as this will help to improve the company which in turn, improve the lives of employees. Thirdly, the moderator who is leading the discussion must not be an employee of the company so that opinions offered will not be biased. He or she must be really interested in people and is careful in listening.

Advantages of using a focus group is that it is relatively brief, easy to execute and inexpensive. Besides that, it is a qualitative method as it expresses the feelings of people and provides improvement and insights to the issue. The flexibility of the interview is also an advantage. As compared to the survey, numerous topics can be discussed thus providing more insights to the topic. Responses can also be observed from the participants unlike in survey. It allows more spontaneity as no individual is required to answer any given questions. It allows more discussions to carry on as people are more comfortable since the focus is not on individuals. On top of that, it is not time consuming as compared to individual interview as many opinions and information is collected at the same time. Therefore, during the session, the employees can share more about their opinions in company implementation of flexible benefits. The moderator can begin the discussion by asking the staff what are their opinions in the current benefits scheme and gradually moves on to the specific topic. For instance, the existing scheme does not include medical fees for their children. With the new scheme, employees and employer can co-share the medical expenses for their children. Moderator will need to find out the employees¡¦ concerns to this issue such as, whether the new scheme will address their needs and concerns. Moving on, moderator can ask the participants to suggest any improvement to the scheme. Moderator will need to plan the objectives and outlines of the discussion so as to collect more information from the participants. Therefore, it is important to build a rapport with the group.

Another method that the management can choose is in-depth interview. It is a relatively unstructured, extensive interview used in the primary stages of the research (Zikmund, 000). It is conducted in a one-to-one basis that can last about one to two hours. This requires an extremely skilled interviewer who can encourage the participant to talk freely without influencing the flow of discussion. Therefore, it is expensive as compared to focus group. Advantages of using this method are that it provides a quick assessment of the participant¡¦s response to the new scheme. Participant is more willing to share her views and thoughts as she needs not be concerned about others¡¦ feelings. Therefore, the views shared will be more truthful and open.

Observation method will not be used as the objective of this method is to merely record what can be observed. However, in this case, feelings and opinions are more important. Organisation is more concerned about employees¡¦ reception to this new scheme.

Despite of the advantages of the two methods mentioned above, researcher needs to pay attention to the ethical and political implications of the research. The researcher has the obligation to make sure that the result is valid and representative. Beside that, consequences of the research must be with good intentions and its contribution will enhance the general welfare, in this case, the company. Ethical issues such as, the respondents¡¦ right to privacy; the use of deception; the respondents¡¦ right to be informed about the purpose of the research; the need of confidentiality; the need for honesty in collecting data; and the need for objectivity of reporting data have to be addressed (Zikmund, 000). In order to minimise the implications, researcher has the obligation to inform the respondents the purpose of the interview and must not disguise the purpose of it. The researcher needs to observe the privacy of the respondents and must not give out their personal information without their knowledge. There must be a mutual trust between the researcher and participant. The researcher should only be concerned about the views and response of the participants. No personal information should be disclosed to the organisation as in who say this and that.

Besides observing ethical issues involved with the participants, it is important to understand the political issues behind the research. The researcher must be very clear about her relationship with the organisation. The stakeholders in the organisation play an important role as they are the ones who have a legitimate claim to the outcome. However in this case, there are very few political issues involved as the researcher does not use the observation method. The intention is spelt out clearly to the participants. Therefore, it is easier to conduct without much implication.

In conclusion, parties involved play an important role to the outcome of the research. Researcher needs to understand her role in the process. She acts as a moderator between the organisation and participants. Her opinions must be objective and neutral in the process. Besides that, it is important for her to address any ethical and political issues. Participants need to be truthful in their opinions and suggest any improvements, if any. It is important that they must not treat the process as a complaint session but constructive one. Stakeholders must understand their roles in this process. They must not influence any outcome and use the findings against anyone. By observing the roles played by each party, it will make the process objective, thus improving the welfare of the organisation.

The Romantic Movement began in the late eighteenth century and was a philosophical revolt against rationalism, which became a worldwide phenomenon. Unlike the Enlightenment which was an appeal to the use of reason, romanticism encouraged society to follow their heart and rediscover their feelings when expressing themselves. This basic aim of romanticism resulted in a return to nature, the revival of the artist and the development of nationalistic and religious pride. The Romantic era grew alongside the Enlightenment, but the ideologies of Romanticism were a sharp contrast from the ideas of knowledge and rationale formed during the Enlightenment.

Like the Enlightenment, Romanticism was a rebellion against tradition and allowed society to escape the constricted, rational views of life and to instead concentrate on the emotional side of humanity. It appealed mostly to young people and together they attempted to change society so they were not repeating the mistakes of their elders. To do this, the Romantics had to undertake a journey that intended to seek individualism. From this arose the growth novel, in which the central character experiences self-discovery by rediscovering his hidden feelings. The “Bildungsroman” taught inner growth and the acceptance of one’s self. In modern times, the main goal of the “growth novel” has remained the same but has evolved into a travelling adventure. This involves the central character solitarily exploring the world and embarking on new experiences in foreign countries. The main purpose of the trip is to get in touch with one’s inner being. This concept is discussed in Paul Fussell’s article “Travel, Tourism and International Understanding.” He establishes the truthful theory that contemporary societies no longer recognise the difference between travel and tourism. The article clearly states to the reader that tourism is a result of globalisation and is an un-adventurous and orderly sightsee of a country. In short, the concept of tourism does not support the Romantics notion of experiencing self-discovery.

Romanticism was a reactionary period of history which spread into poetry, artwork and literature. The typical romantic figure became the poet and Romantics began to turn away from the scientist and instead towards the poet. They believed that the orderly and systematic beliefs that science relied on was too narrow-minded and lacked feeling and emotional thought. German poet Goethe wrote “The Sorrows of Young Werther” which became known as the epitome of the Romantic Movement. His central character expressed feelings from the heart and encouraged a manner of expressing emotions. This trend caused a resurrection of Shakespearean drama in nineteenth century England. Many Romantics believed that Shakespeare had been downplayed and unappreciated during the eighteenth century due to the Enlightenment’s suppression of drama. Shakespearean drama reached the height of popularity as it supported the themes of romanticism as his characters embraced their human soul. Today, Shakespeare still continues to be performed around the world and adapted into box-office films. Why is this so? It is because audiences are still attracted to the romantic notion of following their heart. Some may think that romanticism has died out, when in fact it still exists among us today.

“An Eye for an Eye’

From the beginning of time, crime has been evident in human existence, and from the first crime “And it came to pass, when they were in a field, that Cain rose up against his brother, Able, and slew him” (Genesis 48) there has always been punishment. Cain faced the punishment of being ostracized from his colony and sent to wander as a vagabond and a fugitive for his crime (Genesis 414). He was also branded with the mark of a murderer. Thus this shows us that crime in human life is inevitable. Crime is defined as, an act of violation against society and its laws. Punishment is the consequence of the crime. In society today murders are committed daily. Murderers’ actions are getting more and more incomprehensive. They are no longer just committing murder they are torturing, mutilating, and engaging in grossly inappropriate acts against fellow human beings. Behaviors such as this will continue if nothing is done to stop them. The Death Penalty is considered the harshest form of punishment enforced today.

It is the legal infliction of death on persons’ convicted of a crime. It is irrevocable; it ends the existence of those punished, instead of temporarily imprisoning them. People say that the death penalty is wrong morally because it is the cruel and inhumane taking of a life however; others feel that it is the only way for justice to be carried out.

The Death Penalty is morally and socially unethical, should be construed as cruel and unusual punishment. The methods of execution include electrocution, hanging, firing squad, lethal injection, and the gas chamber. The most widely used form of execution has been electrocution. With this method of executing a prisoner, the individual is strapped to a chair along with electrodes attached all over the body. The executioner then proceeds to throw the switch sending vast amounts of electricity flowing throughout the prisoner. During this period, the prisoners flesh burns, and the body shakes violently from the overdose of electricity. When it is all over, smoke is seen coming from the head of the corpse. The methods by which most executions are carried out can involve physical torture. For example in 18, at the scene of the execution of Mr. Evans, he was given three charges of electricity over a period of fourteen minutes. After the first and second charges, Mr. Evans was still conscious and smoke was coming from all over his body, as a result from his flesh burning. An official at the prison tried to stop the execution on account of it being cruel punishment, but he was unsuccessful. Also, on December 1, 184, at the scene of Alpha Stephens execution, the first jolt failed to kill him, he struggled for eight minutes before a second jolt finished the job. The first jolt took two minutes, and then there was a six-minute pause. During this six-minute pause the body had to cool before physicians could examine him and declare another jolt was needed. Stephens took twenty three breaths, during that six-minute interval. Such incidents prove that the death penalty constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. To many, the death penalty is a euphemism for legally killing people. The death penalty demeans the moral order and execution is not legalized murder, but it is the coldest, most premeditated form of homicide. The end result is the same, one more dead body, one more set of grieving parents, and one more cemetery slot. Every time we execute someone, we are desensitizing the value of human life. It epitomizes the tragic inefficacy and brutality of the resort of violence rather than reason for the solution. The death penalty is not a sound principle of criminal justice.

If you kill someone you should be given the death penalty. The death of the killer would give family and friends of the victim a bit of ease over the death. In addition, the death should not be prolonged and should be done immediately. By giving the death penalty to someone, it is fair and very just. If you kill someone, you deserve to die and not stay in jail. If a man kills a man and is convicted he should be ready to die next. When you give a killer the death penalty, it would reassure the people close to the victim it would not happen again. It also gives the victim’s family the feeling that the death of the victim has been avenged. America’s legal system is meant to rid society of evil, and by killing the murderers it gives an example to others. By doing this we are keeping society safe from monstrous acts of killers, by taking away their lives. There is a difference between premeditated murder and a criminal’s execution. When a murderer kills someone, there is no trial, there was no crime committed, and there is no reason why that person should loose their life. An execution is not wrong because this person has committed a crime that is punishable by death. This person is so uncompassionate for human beings and just does not care what happens to anyone. If they are sick enough to take the life of someone else, their life should be taken also. By executing a murderer that person has no chance of ever killing another person again. If we allow these murderers to live they still have a life. They can still visit and communicate with their families. The victim will never see there loved ones again. With society being the way that it is today, with kids killing in schools and people shooting or stabbing other people because they are wearing the wrong colors or a drug deal gone badly, capital punishment needs to be enforced. As American citizens were are all born with certain rights. With these rights however, come responsibilities. When a person takes the life and rights of another human being they forfeit their rights.

In the past, people have invariably felt that if they had been wronged in some way, it was their right to take vengeance on the person that had wronged them. This mentality still exists today. Opposition to the death penalty does not arise from misplaced sympathy for convicted murderers. On the contrary, murder demonstrates a lack of respect for human life. For this very reason, murder is abhorrent, and any policy of state authorized killings is immoral. Executions give society the unmistakable message that human life no longer deserves respect. When the death penalty is brought out in the society, basically everything has an effect on it. Religion, race, cost, and morals, but it is still used in America today. The time has come for us to realize that we cannot stop killing with more killing. Supporters of the death penalty feel that criminals should be punished for their crimes. They want to make examples out of offenders so that the threat of death will be enough to stop them from committing such horrible crimes. Capital punishment ensures peace of mind to the world by ensuring the murderers will never kill again. Without a suitable punishment for crimes, justice will never truly be served to those that have suffered damages or losses. It is suggested that a person’s position on the issue of the death penalty is not determined by a rationale evaluation of the arguments for and against, but is an emotionally based, moral opinion, that may be based on vengeance. The Pope of the Catholic Church once said, “Only God has the Power to give and take life from someone.”
