Beginning in approximately 18 cable and telephone providers set out to conquer the market, which is now known as the “broadband services” market. At first, many of the technologies were developed as a way for telephone companies to compete with cable network operators through enabling delivery of VOD (video on demand) to subscribers it was supposed to be the “killer app”. Early in the development of the technologies it was realized that the network infrastructure, which existed would not be able to deliver the speeds necessary to supply the envisioned broadband services. Vendors rushed to lay miles of high-speed gigabit fiber cable in the core of their networks to support the expected demand. While this vision never did materialize (yet?), the effort was not wasted. Several shifts in the social, demographic, and institutional trends have provided the first real application for the broadband services corporations stepped up their decentralization efforts, more people began to work from the not-so-conventional locations (requiring telecommuting services), and as the WWW became much more interactive and useful people began to experience its intricacies for the recreational and professional activities [1]. In addition to the applications already mentioned, there still is some interest in the high-speed audio and video on-demand services. Given that there finally was demand for the high-speed services, how were the service providers to meet it? While laying high-speed links in the core of the networks could actually be justified from the economic perspective , the same could not be said about the so-called “last mile” cabling. Not only was it very costly to lay miles and miles of high-speed wires, it was also considered to be a very time-consuming solution.

Due to the reasons mentioned above, lots of effort went into developing the technologies that would leave the last mile intact. As a result, we see several technologies that emerged Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), ISDN, cable, and wireless access. In fact, the technology areas can almost be thought of as being separated along the four principle media types for delivering high-speed data to and from customer premises subscriber telephone loop(used by dsl/isdn), coaxial cable(used by cable modems), optical fiber, and wireless/satellite[]. In this paper, I will attempt to present the most important aspects of the first of them, the DSL.

In this report I will focus on one of the aforementioned technological areas the Digital Subscriber Line. DSL is actually a multitude of technologies, which consistently have one thing in common the “DSL” in the name . Actually, they are also composed of very similar building blocks. Hence, components discussed in this paper should enable one to understand, albeit at a somewhat high level, how the technologies operate, and what are the differences that distinguish them from one another. In the process of describing the concepts, I may often focus on ADSL that’s because it is the most popular, and there is more information available about it.

This report is not to be looked at as suggesting that xDSL is superior to the other last-mile technologies, or that one technique used is superior to the other it is merely meant as a fairly comprehensive compilation of information to aid someone not familiar with the technology in understanding of what’s involved. Notice, that I say “compilation” of information, as the objective of this paper was to research, organize, and present the information in an understandable fashion. Most of the information used in this paper was found elsewhere (as may be judged from the fairly large references section of the report). I tried to provide links to the relevant sources for anyone who wishes to look for more comprehensive treatment of the subjecst. Finally, I attempted to organize this report in a top-down fashion first an introduction is given as to the uses of the DSL. The introduction is followed by a description of how xDSL fits into the networking infrastructure, and a high-level overview of how it works, without going into any specifics. Finally, the DSL modem is introduced as a conceptual block-diagram, and pushing off of that diagram individual components are discussed, together with underlying technologies.
