“I’m so late! I’m so very, very late!”- This is one of the most recognized phrases said by the peculiar White Rabbit from the well-known story, ‘Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland.’ Just like the White Rabbit, the characters from the amazing novel, Watership Down, are of rabbit origin and have the ability to speak in the form of a human. Even though in reality we know that rabbits do not have the capability to speak, the creatures of this story are based on a fantasy and therefore are living in a different time and place than us. But this doesn’t mean that just because it has been set in a different time and place its themes aren’t relevant to us today. Watership Down revolves around the central themes of survival, friendship and belief. All in which are relevant to the issues that we deal with today.

Watership Down is an enchanting-fantasy novel based on real places, which was written in the mid-sixties by Richard Adams. It involves a group of rabbits that seek to settle in a majestic meadow where they will be able to build a new warren. The party of rabbits led by their leader Hazel, faces a multitude obstacles throughout their quest. The explanation for the rabbit’s sudden hunt for haven was due to a forewarning by one of the rabbits reading a notice board, which advertised the clearing of Sandleford Warren (the rabbits previous home) to be used as building land. Throughout their prolonged voyage the rabbits encounter all sorts of inhabitants. They also meet humans like Mr. and Mrs. Cane and their daughter, Lucy, who live at the Nuthanger Farm, a place the rabbits stop by on their journey. This is indeed one fantastic tale of the rabbit race.

In the novel, survival is a major aspect in which it allows the characters and the plot to boldly stand out. The character, Fiver, is the rabbit, which began their quest of survival. His premonition of upcoming disaster led rabbits from his warren to embark on a journey for a paradise field. Like all voyages there are always obstacles to tackle, in this situation, surviving is their key obstacle. The adventures Hazel and his comrades go through can reasonably be compared to as the same as of our civilisation. The humans living on Earth today might be a slight more intelligent then the humans living thousands of years ago, but both generations of humans participate in labour. Working always was and always will be the key point to surviving and achieving your goals no matter what generation you’re in. As for the characters in the story, to survive they had to work hard to achieve what they started out for- happiness. An example of working in the story was when the rabbits began to build a new warren near the middle of the story. Other examples of surviving would be when Hazel and his travelling companions, had to partake in extreme objectives. Some of these objectives included tackling the horrendous terrain which included crossing rivers and escaping a storm, defending themselves from crows and other animals and avoiding humans and their inventions. All these encounters are examples, which show that the characters from Watership Down have obstacles related to us humans.

Hazel, Blackberry, Silver, Buckthorn, Bigwig and Strawberry, just to name a few, are not just travelling companions but are also very good friends. The power of friendship in the story may not seem as such an important topic at first, but as the climax builds, we can tell that the need for friendship becomes evidently visible. Throughout the story there were times when fellow rabbits had to ask their peers for help, ninety-nine percent of the time help was given. This confirms that friendship is indeed a dominant force during the length of the tale. The different variety of friendship can be divided into many segments, some which include trust, loyalty and love. These three topics occur frequently during the discussion of camaraderie and as a result are important in the story and also to humans. Humans, like a lot of other living creatures need friendship to revolve around the society. Basically, everybody needs a friend or two to help them get somewhere in life, that’s why we have friends. They may help us in many ways, when we are miserable, when we have problems; they also help us cover up when we are in trouble. A fair amount of issues that the rabbits deal with in the story are almost the same as what we humans deal with. For example, love was shown in the story when Hazel showed his affection for Strawberry. It’s not any different in the book then it is in real life. All the book tries to say is that the rabbits deal with the same dilemmas as us.

You might not think how there ever could be a religion in a story like Watership Down, but if you have read the book thoroughly, there is a belief but not a religion that the rabbits believe in. Almost all the rabbits, either from Hazel’s party or from a separate warren, believed in Frith, the rabbit who created the world and El-ahrairah, the prince rabbit who had so many wives and children he couldn’t count them. To the rabbits, Frith was like God to the Christians, Gaea to the Ancient Greeks and Ptah to the Ancient Egyptians, all who were believed by their religions in creating the world. On the other hand, El-ahrairah was more of a mix between Zeus (from the Ancient Greeks) and Julius Caesar (from the Ancient Romans). El-ahrairah has Zeus’s sex drive and Caesar’s pride. The story about Frith and El-ahrairah can be summarized to this ‘Frith created the world and everything on it. He created the animals and birds, one of who was El-ahrairah. El-ahrairah had so many wives and children that he had a race of his own. One day, Frith told El-ahrairah if he cannot handle his people, he should control them himself. Of course, El-ahrairah being the stubborn rabbit he is, disagreed. And so, made Frith mad and causing him to make changes to the world to kill El-ahrairah’s people and eventually him.’ To the rabbits, this is a belief to them. To other living creatures it may seem like a myth or even so, a load of bull. But under any circumstances we cannot say anything that may offend the believers. This goes for many religions in humanity. If we are Christians we believe in God and Jesus, if we are Buddhist we believe in Buddha, if we are a rabbit we believe in Frith and this tells us that the relation of religion between the novel and humankind is equivalent.

There are many themes in the enthralling novel, Watership Down, which are associated with the work humans do in today’s society. Although the setting of Watership Down has been based on a race of rabbits, their problems, goals and affairs are exactly the same as people living today. The only difference that can be picked out from these two groups is that the author, Richard Adams (who is human), has created the race of talking rabbits. This can only tell us one thing in particular. Anything we write about, talk about and think about, we always relate to the human race, because we have the greatest knowledge about ourselves and it takes a great deal more to try to learn about another species when we cannot communicate with them.
