The film Witness employs a combination of film techniques in order to explore the multi-faceted nature of conflict.
In the movie it can be seen that Wier explores various forms of conflict and contrast. These forms include violent conflict, torment and inner struggle and the clash and contrast of two different worlds. During certain scenes the techniques used by the composer to show conflict are evident.

John is standing outside of the bathroom in a doorway, which can be seen as a barrier of them being together. Rachel is afraid of what the Amish community might think of her if she is seen with John Book. Outside a storm can be heard brewing, which can be interpreted as trouble for the pair.
Another scene which shows inner conflict is the Dancing Scene. The song “What a wonderful world” can be heard playing. The lyrics of this song make it clear that although John and Rachel both have a poor understanding about each other and the contrasting worlds they live in, they are both in love with each other. Book is reciting the lyrics to Rachel, showing the audience how the song relates to the couple. Sexual tension is growing between the two as they dance closely. They both hesitate before kissing, which shows the amount of attraction and fear between the two. This is again emphasizing on inner conflict as they are both unsure of what they want.
In the final showdown between John Book and one of the corrupt policemen, Book is able to make the man surrender his gun without shooting or any violence. This shows the triumph of good over evil. Although both these men come from the same world they have different views. One is corrupt and seedy while Book is honest and “plays by the book”.
In the final scene when John is together with Rachel, the camera focuses outside the window and onto the road leading out of the Amish town. This shows that this is the path John Book is going to take, as he does not fit into the Amish way of life.
