and death of nature. In Bishops poem, the speaker
catches the fish and after examining it, he or she
decides to let the fish go on living. Bishop creates
sympathy for the fish, Like medals with their ribbons
frayed and wavering, a five-haired beard of wisdom from
his aching jaw(61-64). The speaker admires the fish
and knows that the water symbolizes life for the fish.
In Rilkes poem the panther is like a prisoner,
...there are a thousand bars; and behind the bars, no
world (-4). In the following quote, An image enters
in, rushes down through the tensed, arrested muscles,
plunges into the heart and is gone, Rilkes use of
imagery paints a picture that a human enters the den and
hope rushes through the panthers body, but the human
leaves and the panthers hope is gone once again. In
Nowlans poem, the moose presents a picture of strength.
Even though the moose is like a king in his world, he
has no control of his life. The moose is cruelly
taunted before his execution, The young men snickered
and tried to pour beer down his throat...pry open his
jaws with bottles (18-1). Although the moose may
appear to be cuddly and shaggy he is an animal of the
wild. His roar was his strength to stay alive, the
bull moose gathered his strength like a scaffolded king,
straightened and lifted his horns so that even the
wardens backed away as they raised their rifles. When
he roared, people ran to their cars (-). Nowlans
sympathy for the moose and his disgust for mankind are
strongly expressed in this poem. The theme in all three
poems is that humans need to value nature and all of its
elements.
