Man’s Small Step

The Apollo 11 Moon Landing was a spectacular technological achievement for the human race in general, and the American people in particular. Apollo 11 successfully achieved its primary mission, to perform a manned lunar landing and return the mission safely to Earth. People were inspired for the first time in their lives; they actually believed they could achieve their dreams. As Henry Ford said, “Now our horizons are virtually limitless… Conquering space can have even a deeper meaning for mankind. To be able to overcome gravity, survive weightlessness and subsist on an earth satellite in the absence of atmosphere should tell us that our problems here on earth are far from insuperable.” The great forgotten American dream, if you work hard enough good things will happen, came back and Americans believed they could make it. Americans new they had many problems but if a man can walk on the moon; Americans started to believe they could solve their petty differences.

Some people thought exploring space was important but in an opposite direction. They believed that if we travel into space and see what space has to offer we will then realize that the earth is the true home of mankind. George Wald, a Harvard biologist, said, “So let us be glad to explore this corner of space, the solar system, the more to feel at home in it; the more to realize that our home in space is the earth; and the more to treat it as our home” He and other believed that humans were destroying our planet and if people saw that the earth isn’t just another planet its man’s home, humans could start living in conformity with Mother Nature.

America, with NASA, landed on the moon first but this didn’t just affect America. Citizens in other countries start thinking about their dreams and themselves but at the human race as a whole. We, as humans, are all in this crazy game together and many people didn’t see that before Apollo 11’s touchdown. Jean Monnet, a French Economist, was quoted as

I am for it. It makes me grow beyond myself. It breaks down the last basic frontier. Conflicts between men are almost always a matter of frontiers. The astronauts now have destroyed what looked like an unsurmountable frontier. They have shown us that we cannot any longer think in limited terms. There are no limitations left. We can think in terms of the universe now.

Mr. Monnet describes mankind’s advancing as overcoming conflicts and reaching a new frontier. If a mankind can overcome the most impossible frontier, of stepping foot on the moon, what can’t mankind do? His finishing with thinking in terms of the universe is important because before this many human didn’t think about life as man vs. space it was more man vs. man and with this new concept people would realize that there are no differences between races.

Before Apollo mission American citizens definitely had a man vs. man attitude and beating the Russians in the cold war was extremely important. In fact the race was so close that the Russian announced, three day before the US launch, they had launched Luna 15, an unmanned spacecraft, “to conduct further scientific exploration of the moon and space near the moon.” NASA officials thought that the Russians might be trying to upstage the United States by collecting soil from the moon. As it turned out Luna 15 never got space rocks however it did come very close to the moon’s surface; many involved with NASA believe it an attempt to draw attention away from Apollo 11 and nothing more. The moon race was extremely close and many Americans probability would not have felt so proud to be an American if we came in second. But let reality stand; America did win the race to the moon.

The landing had a particularly strong effect in the religious studies. One might think that religion is pure and against technological improvements but this is far from the case. It was not just one religion that was in favor of space exploration but religions of all kind came to agree that exploring the moon and space could only lead to an increase in knowledge. The Dalai Lama said, “The American landing on the moon symbolizes the very acme of scientific achievement. It is indeed a phenomenal feat of far reaching consequences for the world of science.” Here is one of the most famous religious figures of all time supporting these missions. He like other also say this is a way for peace to come on earth by finishing with, “But, the most wondrous event would be if man…[could] progress toward achieving the real mental peace, and satisfaction when he reaches the moon.” The Greek Orthodox Church saw this as the beginning of a rising of new knowledge. As Patriarch Athenagoras, the leader of the Greek Orthodox Church, stated

This marvelous enterprise of man as a start of his communication with other regions of the universe means at the same time the beginning of a new epoch in the fields of culture and science and in general in the articulation of the life of tomorrow of the human race on this planet. Perhaps we are on the eve of the vision of a new wisdom, of a new understanding, of the revelation of God to his creations.

Religion saw Apollo 11 as a coming of age in the field of science; science would be working with religion to reveal the secrets of the universe to mankind.

Sometimes a child says things the best as the case with Jim Aiello, a 1yr old boy from Michigan, “I read in books that ever since early man they’ve wondered what the moon was made out of and why it’s up there. Now we’re going to find out why.” There cannot be a price put on human knowledge and even more importantly this event got teenagers interested in astronomy. Kids weren’t just interested in astronomy they wanted to learn new things and in the long run that was the most significant affect the Apollo 11 moon landing had. These kids who turned into adults and invented new things may have never gotten into the field to begin with. And just like him many adult are kids at heart, when it comes to space.
