When I first started research for in vitro fertilization, I wanted to know who the protagonist and antagonist were toward this medical procedure. While doing my research I found that stem cell research was always mentioned in regards to in vitro. So I decided to change my paper and find out who is for and against stem cell research. By the end of this I hope to make sure that stem cell research is used to treat diseases and gets federal funding.


Stem cell research began with Doctor James Thomson, a biologist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He suggests that stem cells offer great promises for treating diseases. Arlen Specter to endorse federal funding for research in the past. This group of representatives felt it was important to make it clear that more than just a handful of senators felt strongly about the issue of stem cell. Specter believed “that there were about a dozen additional members of his party � most of whom are anti-abortion � who would endorse taxpayer funding for the studies because of the embryonic cells potential for fighting disease.” Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle is a strong supporter of federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research feels that if President Bush moves forward to ban federal funding that


the senate would vote to fund life-saving research.


On August 001, President Bush did support limited federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. It was a controversial decision that he had weighed for months. In the beginning President Bush was totally against stem cell research.


During this time he was implored by Pope John Paul II to reject such funding. President Bush allowed funding for only those stem cells that already had been extracted from destroyed embryos. This would come from women who undergo in vitro fertilization and leave the remaining embryos to either be destroyed or used for scientific research. The church believes that “stem cell research in itself is not wrong, but creating and/or destroying human life in order to mime stem cells.” The National Health Council had mixed feelings over President Bush’s announcement. “While glad that President Bush recognized the importance of stem cell research it was disappointed that this research would never realize its full potential.” Some of the major problems with stem cell research is whether or not that the cells would be used improperly.
