It’s All About The Love

As we crossed the boarder into Canada, an awed excitement filled the five of us. Avid concertgoers we are, but when a Dave Matthews Band concert comes along, everything changes. The mood lightens and brightens. Everyone becomes happy. Dave Matthews has a tremendous following. Almost like the Grateful Dead to an extent. People travel from far and away, just to see their awesome stage presence. They are not loved for their looks like many other musical acts these days, but only their raw and pure talent which touches the hearts of one and all who attend their shows.

I have seen Dave Matthews six times now, not counting this show. And every time is a new experience. They generate an overwhelming mood and ambience throughout the entire venue and beyond. Even listening to them in my room at home or in my car fills me with appreciation for good music. Never have I seen them in a coliseum or an enclosed space, only in the great outdoors with the wind blowing and the sun retiring for the night to the west. Therefore, this was an epic event in my life.

As we approached our hotel, wanna-be hippies lined the streets in their Birkenstocks and tie-die. We knew that probably all those people were going to the show. Vancouver B.C. is not usually over-populated with these kinds of people. With only nine hours until showtime, we ate lunch and hit the bars. To prepare ourselves for yet another incredible Dave show, we sang, we ate, and we drank. Martini’s all around. Through the speakers in the noisy bar, I could faintly hear the music of Dave Matthews, and it filled me with even more excitement and anticipation.

As show time quickly approached, we walked towards the coliseum in great anticipation of what songs we would hear. Along the streets, people of every size, shape, color, and culture were talking excitedly about the show. Boomboxes blared different songs into a melodious mesh, almost like a musical collage.

The Dave Matthews band is very liberal, pertaining to their following and style of music. They are not considered heartthrobs or pop stars. They are popular because of their musical talents. A breathtaking array of guitar, bass, violin, saxophone, and wall to wall drums fill people of every origin with pleasure and excitement for more. The lyrics encompass you with thoughts of dreams and reality, love and hate. His harmonious voice drains all others out, leaving you with a lasting sense of beauty.

As we entered the coliseum and took our seats, the lights went out, and five dark silhouettes took to the stage. The screaming and clapping was deafening. Signs were held high in hopes the band would see them. It is amazing how the mer presence of these musicians can excite and stimulate a crowd. The stage lights turned a calming violet color and the sweet strumming of the chords from “Grey Street” filled the air. Each time he would sing a song with a heart felt chorus, the crowd would go insane.

For the next two and a half hours, I engaged in dancing, about thirty thousand smiles, and sang just about every word to every song he belted out, just like the other twenty thousand fans. When the final song ended, the lights stayed off in anticipation of an encore. Lighters held firm and high in just about every hand in the coliseum, it gave a warm glow to the stage. On the overhead monitors above, you could see the band in amazement of the huge crowd, pleading for more. When they finally returned to the stage, the warm glow of the fire was extinguished and the strobe lights kicked in. They played for another forty-five minutes and called it a night.

A Dave Matthews concert is an incredible experience. Before attending one of his shows, I religiously followed punk bands around to the local clubs, waiting for my turn in the mosh pit to get my anger out. However, not anymore. Dave Matthews fills the air with a sense of love and admiration for others. His music makes his many fans appreciative of good music, and not all the glitz and hype to making money. This music gives you a sense of peacefulness, and in the eyes of many, including me, you can see a single tear forming in their eyes. This emotion is due to the passion and love for the music. As me and my friends say at every Dave Matthews show, “it’s all
