A historian once wrote “The British ruled the colonies for one hundred and fifty years and lost them in twelve.” The British rule in the New World really did begin when the empire began to establish major settlements in the colonies in the 160s and 0s, indeed, nearly one hundred and fifty years before the colonies’ declaration of independence in 1776. Following the century and a half of British rule, there were a number of events in the twelve years between the declaration and the end of the Revolutionary War, that led to the demise of British rule in the colonies of North America.

If I am going to discuss the events that took place during the Revolution, I must first explain the events that led to the Revolution, and the colonial revolt against the mother country. After the end of the Seven Years’ War in America, British control of the colonies began to become more and more controlling. With the efforts of Britain to have more direct control over the colonies, the colonies began to seem more and more uncontrollable. In King George’s attempts to hush colonial resistence, excessive acts and laws were passed by Britain in the colonies, from the Proclamation line of 176 to the Writs of Assistance to the Sugar and Stamp Acts to the Townshend Duties. All of the events from 176 on seemed to upset and force the colonists to rebel. The colonists finally ended the British rule and declared their reasons for independence in 1776, although the war had already really begun in Massachusetts.

In the early battles of the war, the hope for independence seemed to diminish with the patriots’ repeated losses. Though the country he was fighting for was not yet a country, George Washington understood that to defeat Britain, he did not really have to defeat Britain, but only prolong the war until the British taxpayers were fed up with paying for the seemingly useless cause. Despite the repeated British victories early, Washington was able to keep his army fighting. Then, in October of 1777, British troops planned to attempt a three-pronged attack on Albany, New York. The attack failed miserably and the patriots claimed a turning point victory at the battle of Saratoga. With battles still being fought in the west, General Henry Clinton and his British troops, took Charles Town. He then returned to New York and left the rest of the south to Lord Charles Cornwallis, who went on to destroy the rebel troops at Camden. Cornwallis was then defeated at Cowpens and Kings Mountain, and led what was left of his troops into Virginia. Cornwallis was then crushed at Yorktown, which is thought to be the last major battle of the American Revolution. With Cornwallis’s defeat, the British taxpayers were finally pushed too far and lost their will to continue fighting.

While the battles of the west and other parts of the country were still occurring, the American diplomats began peace talks in Paris in June of 178. By 178 the Treaty of Paris is signed and the Revolutionary War is over, and by 1788 the colonies adopt their new Constitution and are finally recognized as and individual country of their own.
