English class we read “A Man Called Horse” and watched the movie A Man Called Horse,
which was based on the story. Usually when movies are based on a book or story they do not

differences I noticed the most were in the flashback and foreshadow, the complications, and the
ending.
The differences between the flashback and foreshadow in the story and movie were not
very much, but still noticeable. The flashback in the story states that “Horse” had grown up in
Boston with his grandmother. The movie says that the flashback is when “Horse” is back in
England enjoying life. The flashback in the movie doesn’t say at all that “Horse” had lived in
Boston. The foreshadowing in the story and movie was very similar, but not exactly alike. In
both versions of “A Man Called Horse” a foreshadow is when Yellow Robe/Hand puts on the
bearskin belt which symbolizes that he may not retreat from battle. In the movie there is also
another foreshadow. This is when the other Indian tribe is using a mirror and the sun to signal
when to attack against the crow.
Another Difference between the story and movie that I noticed were the complications. Some of them were the same such as “Horse” getting captured by the Crow Indians and having to gain their respect. One of the major differences between the movie and story was that in the story “Horse” eventually learns the Crow’s language and can communicate with them. In the movie he never learns the language except for a few words. Also, something different is that in

the movie another Indian tribe raids the Crow’s camp and causes a disturbance among the people. In the story another Indian tribe never tried to raid the camp. Yet another complication is when Yellow Robe/Hand loses his wife. In the story the wife is stolen, but in the movie the wife chooses another man.
The endings between the story and book were quite similar, but still were different in ways. In the end of the story Freedom dies while giving birth to their son. In the movie Freedom dies from being wounded during the raid. Something that was the same was that when “Horse’s” wife died he was free from the family, but chose to stay with the mother so she would have some sort of family and she wouldn’t die during the winter. When the mother died he was allowed to return home and that is exactly what he did. When the mother dies in the story “Horse” goes off alone back to Boston. When “Horse” dies in the movie he leaves with a war party to protect him until he can get to a place where he is safe and can get back to England. Also, at the end of the movie you kind of get the sense that he may come back to the tribe later on to become the chief.
As I have stated before that many movies have been based on a novel, short story, or play. This movie called A Man Called Horse was based on a short story. There are usually differences between the movie and what it is based on, even if the differences are not very noticeable. The three differences that I talked about were flashback and foreshadow the complications, and the ending. All in all I think I would prefer the story to the movie. My reasons for choosing the story are, first, I enjoy being able to imagine what the characters and the setting looks like in my head, and second, reading can help your grammar skills and you can learn new words.
