Gender In Society Are Females Inferior or Superior?

In typical American society, gender is based in a male-centered world. This is an issue that has derived from history, back in the stone ages. Females were always looked upon as being inferior against the superior male society. This type of standard just ended up becoming the norm. There are two articles that I closely examined that perfectly coincide with the females being inferior in society under the males “In a Male-Centered World, Female Differences Are Transformed into Female Disadvantages” by Sandra Lipsitz Bem; and “Rethinking Women’s Biology” by Ruth Hubbard. The first article breaks down the female gender, elaborating on the issue of them being at a disadvantage under the male gender, opposed to just being at differences. The second article focuses on the fact of not being specifically born into a gender, but the fact that you become a gender.

“The problem for women-and what limits their chances for equality-is that they are different from men in a social world that disguises what are really just male standards or norms as gender-neutral principles.” (Bem 61) It is really a disgrace that the society that we live in is predominantly male! Which basically means that the males are at the top of the line, they are the individuals that help determine what is what in society. Being a female myself, this makes me absolutely furious! It seems as if we just can’t get ahead, that we have to just accept what the male-centered word deals us. For instance, I can remember being in high school and playing softball in gym class, boys against girls, and of course the girls would lose. It had nothing to do with gender itself, but it had more to do with actual strength. At the actual time I didn’t quite think anything of it, but now, looking back, I know that my male gym teacher knew that the girls were going to lose. And how could he make such an imbalance? Then I figured that it was just the typical mindset of the typical male in society. In history the males were the individuals in the political office, and they are the ones who set the rules and that was that. And the males of today can’t help but to be superior to the females because it has already been set in history.

“Our concept of ourselves is socially constructed and political because our society’s interpretation of what is and is not normal and natural affects what we do.” (Hubbard 46) The society that we live in has, for the longest time now, made their own assumptions of where and how females stand today. Females today live up to the life that society sets out for them. It is as if we are living a “fake” life. If you think about it, we may not be as strong as males are when you look at in a physical prospective, but when it comes to “book smarts”, or common sense, we have men beat by a long shot. But of course that is never taken into consideration because it is simply the norm that women can’t be equal, let alone above the level of men. In the job place, the women are often likely to hold their tongue against their male co-workers, which, in most cases, are usually of a higher position. This pass summer, I worked at a Honda dealership, which was predominantly male-oriented. I used this as an advantage, because they felt I couldn’t do as much because I was a female. At the time it seemed perfect because I was getting paid the same amount the men were getting paid, but I didn’t have to perform as much labor. I look back at it and while I was taking it in the direction that I was “getting over”, the men were taking it as they were superior to me because they performed more work than I did in a days times. But that was plainly the different thinking of the two different genders.

After comparing the two articles “In a Male-Centered World, Female Differences Are Transformed into Female Disadvantages” and “Rethinking Women’s Biology”, I analyzed that women are definitely inferior in our society opposed the superior, male-centered gender. The women in the first article by Sandra Lipsitz Bem, strive for equal pay for equal work. This should not even be an issue! The United States lives under this oath of the world being free and equal for all, but in reality is not. What determines if a man gets a higher pay than a woman even if she earns the same amount a man gets paid? Absolutely nothing other than America’s standard norm of men being at the advantage. And then when a female disagrees or decides to act upon such issues, they are blatantly put in the category of being a feminist. Even so, in the “male’s world”, being a feminist, going against the norm is just out-right wrong. In the second article by Ruth Hubbard, the women are being examined as walking ovaries and wombs. The females are furious that the males never get examined as walking testicles. Again, this is an issue coming from a male-dominated society.

Gender is a very sensitive issue that has been a conflict among men and women in our world for over a long period of time. I found it extremely interesting that Bem and Hubbard both elaborated on the point that females are in fact inferior to the males. “In the nineteenth century, when women tried to get access to higher education, scientists initially claimed we could not be educated because our brains are too small.” (Hubbard 46) If you think closely, mostly all of the scientists in our history were males. So of course they wanted to be the individuals to remain as the smarter ones on the planet. And it was definitely an intimidation to the men when the women were actual trying to gain access to higher education. The men already thought that women weren’t smart enough to test the system to achieve what was owed to them, which was equal opportunity for equal education. “Members of marginalized groups, both inside academe and out, have begun to base their claims for equality not, as they tended to do in the past, on their similarities to dominant social groups, but on the ways in which they are different, whether biologically or historically.” (Bem 60) Already this is a quick synopsis of the fact that women are going beyond the norm to gain a place, more like an even chance.

The two articles that I closely examined tremendously affected me. To actually believe that I live in a society that is all worked up on equality for all, but yet fail to analyze the issue of males vs. females in a male-centered world. When I am involved in certain situations that clearly views me as being inferior to a male, I tend to merely oversee it. This is bad on my part, but I figure that by standing up for womens rights will leave me short-handed. Yes, in a way, I fear the man-centered world that we live in, especially being a woman of African American decent. Maybe it is an inherited feeling, seeing my father being the man of the house, the superior one who we all had to answer to. Whatever it is, it is morally indignant, and has taken a huge toll over our society.
