Describe the relationship between Mr. Keating and his students and explain how he influences the boys!

The novel „Dead Poets Society“ is written by N. H. Kleinbaum. This fiction story takes place at Welton Academy, a private school only for boys in Vermont, USA in the year 15. One of the main characters is the new English professor Mr. John Keating. Today I want to deal with the relationship between this teacher and his pupils and with the question how he influences the boys.

When Keating comes into class for the first time, to confuse the boys and make them pay attention, he is wearing a shirt and a tie but no jacket, like all the other teachers. He sits at the front of the room, staring out the window and doesnt say a word. To convince the students different his lessons are, he does very strange things. After their first lesson with Mr. Keating the boys are surprised, curious, and fascinated by him. The students realize that he is clearly in contrast to their other teachers. These seem old, uninspired, disinterested in them and old-fashioned in their way of teaching. So most of the boys like his way of teaching very much. Mr. Keating was a Welton student, so he knows that the teachers at this private school dont really care for the children. Its the first time that these young man are separeted from their parents. Nobody is interested in their feelings. Furthermore there is a lot of pressure on the students, everybody expects them to be excellent and perfect. I think Mr. Keating is like a second father for the students. He is the only person at this school whom they trust. They talk to him, for example, about their problems with their parents. And their teacher gives them advice and takes care of them. He is not only interested in learning and in results. His students are important to him, not their marks. And thats why the boys like him. They can call him „Captain. Thats something new onat this traditional school with strict rules, which you have to obey, and shows the special relationship between Mr. Keating and his students. Keating has got a very modern style of teaching. He wants the students to become free-thinkers and individualists. But the parents and the other teachers dont like these teaching methods. They prefer the old style of teaching which means hard work and discipline. And they think that the young students cant have their own opinion of poetry. But Mr. Keating does. He tells them to rip out the first chapter of their textbook because he doesnt want the students to believe everything they are told by old books. The teacher wants them to get involved with poetry at the level of their emotions and its meaning. And he wants to convince them of his seriousness in encouraging them to think for themselves and realize that words and ideas can change the world. So the students begin to think for themselves and they realize that they cant be forced to anything they dont want to do. The boys are mortal beings and must discover what they want in live. This can have an effect on things in the world. Keating uses the term „Carpe diem“ which means that the boys should size up the day-they shall make the best of it, it doesnt matter if it works or not, its important to do what you want to do. The students pay attention to Mr. Keating and understand him. They find an old school annual in the library with an article about Keating and the „Dead Poets Society“. While Keating was a student at Welton it was a place where he could be free and where he really lived. And so he hopes that it will also help the boys to think freely and to reflect about their experiences as it helped him. So the young boys joined in the Dead Poets Society, where they read poems in a cave. This is something new for them and they want to know more about it and so they try it- perhaps at first only because its against the Welton rules, its something they themselves want to do. But later it means more to them, the Dead Poets Society is a part of them, here they are free and they can express their feelings. Knox writes a poem about his feelings. He loves Chris but she unfortunately has got a boyfriend. But then he gets his nerve up and calls Chris who then invites him to a party. The students get more and more self-confidence. Mr. Keating helps Todd to overcome his insecurities and to put together a poem in front of his class which expresses his inner feelings. He felt unable to do it before. Another student who learns from Keating how to have an extraordinary life and how to think freely is Neil Perry. He adores acting very much but his father never wanted him to do this, because he wants him to finish school, to study medicine and to become a doctor. But Neil wants to become a good actor. So he plays a role in A Midsummernights Dream without telling his father about it. But his father finds out and tells Neil not to play the role. Neil says yes but in fact he plays it. And he plays it very well. It is a great success. But suddenly his father comes into the theatre. After the play he takes Neil home with him. They get in big trouble and Neil shoots himself that night. The teachers and parents say that the reason for Neils death was Mr. Keating`s style of teaching. All the members of the Dead Poets Society have to sign a letter, which is a pack of lies. The students realize that they cannot save Mr. Keating, so why should they ruin their own lives? One pupil doesnt sign it and is expelled from school. The other students havent got this kind of self-confidence and sign in anguish realizing that they have betrayed themselves as well as Mr. Keating. So this teacher is prevented from teaching. When Mr. Keating comes into the class the last time to take his things away with him, all the students jump on their desks and say Oh captain, my captain! This action shows how much respect the students have. They like their teacher and they want to thank him for all he gave them.

You see that there was a very special relationship between Mr. Keating and his pupils. I can imagine their feelings, when he had to go. In my opinion they will never forget the time with him and all the important things he taught them in his lessons.
