Our first glimpse of coral is in Act 1, scene where her silent presence suggests she is a somewhat subdued character. We learn she is emotionally disturbed in Act 1, scene , where she cried throughout the comical school production of a ‘A mid summer nights dream”. She went to see a comedy but what she has seen has been a tragedy. Her soliloquy confirms she is not dealing with the loss of her dead son and reality. We see also see in this scene that she has an intuitiveness about her. “He looked so sick yet so wonderful”.

In Act , scene we learn that Coral cannot accept the loss of her dead son. Nor can she communicate or share her grief with her husband. Her grief distorts her sense of reality. She doesn’t want to face her present life. Roy says, “come back to reality”. She reply’s “I mightn’t like it there” which shows she is unable to accept reality and therefore has retreated from the truth.

She is desperate for love.

Do my essay on change CHEAP !

The first time we see coral explore self-change is in Act two, scene , when both coral and Roy are discussing their holiday. Coral says ‘I’ll be good! I’ll improve. Watch me get better”. We see she attempts to heal herself for the sake of another. She does not try to change and move forward for herself but for the welfare of her husband. It does become clear later though at the luxury hotel that she is trying desperately to heal herself.

Roy’s idea of changing coral is through a holiday at the gold coast.

In corals attempt to change herself back into the conventional socialist, we see once again her magical insight into Rick and Leonie’s problems. We see she has a gift with others peoples troubles and it is this sensitivity that makes her the catalyst for Tom’s healing in the play.

At the end of scene , Act , threatened with being locked up, she runs away. It is here that Coral begins her self-exploration and analysis in dealing with the past.

In Act , scene 4 Coral is only glimpsed on the beach but her clothing suggests that she has undergone some change. Vic’s comment “She goes and sits on the rock ledge for hours and stares into the sea” suggests that nature has already begun to work its miracle on her. We see she has begun to heal when she leaves the hotel and comes to the beach. She returns to nature, to find inner piece.

Act 4, scene is the scene where Coral is healed with her association to Tom and he’s play. It is Toms play that gently launches Coral back into the real world. His play shows us that there is hope for Coral, hope for her to change. The Stranger on the shore is a play about letting go. She plays the role of a mermaid who must forget the dead sailor and get on with the business of living. She learns to walk, walk not only as her character but also for herself. In the past she had been stripped of her legs, unable to walk forward in life. Now she is walking by herself. “I’m walking, I’m walking, I’m walking”. She is able to walk forward and move on with her life. Tom and his play are the reason Coral has been able to re-enter the real world. Now she is healed she is able to heal others, thus she learns how to accept the past and walk forward. In Tom’s play he grants the mermaid life, just as he grants Coral life. She has come to accept the need for those alive to live. Her dropping of her disguise as an American signifies her return to her self. She has under gone a change that has allowed her to break free from her stagnate past. She is now ready to return to Roy. It is through sea objects, shells, that coral is later reconciled with Roy (act 5, scene 1)

We see at the end of Corals journey the completion of one cycle and the chance to begin a new one in the New Year.
