It is inevitable that the characters will fail in some way to control what happens to them because struggle and failure are what create interest and drama in this play. It is a reflection of our everyday life, We are constantly constructing and deconstructing our inner and outer control over things as everything around us changes as a consequence of life’s rhythm. The characters of Isbens ‘A Dolls House’ all struggle to control their lives. Nora, Helmer, Mrs Linde, Rank and even Krogstad each had problems and concerns that they tried to manage yet in the end were out of their controls. Nora was Isbens doll. She was like the puppet to which he pulled the strings. No matter how hard she tried to control her life she failed. Isben introduced us to Nora as a silly, spendthrift, housewife who lived under the patronizing guard of her husband, who treated her like a ‘dolly-baby’. She reacted accordingly and played the part that her husband, Torvald, wanted to see. She controlled the person that she was by putting up the façade of hopelessness. She even felt guilty about taking out a loan to save his life because it went against his beliefs. She tried desperately to pay it off without him knowing, yet she lost control over the situation. Krogstad threatened to write to Torvald telling him about the loan she had taken from him and how she forged her father’s signature. She had no control over Krogstad writing the letter, nor if Torvald would receive the letter, or what his reaction would be. Not only did Nora fail in controlling her family affairs, she also failed in keeping her love affair with Rank as a friendship. She finally realized that to live a true, happy life she needed self-realization. She had spent her entire life trying to control her emotions and actions, and had failed miserably. The control she had taken had not made her happy, and she had failed to maintain that level of control. She needed a fresh start. Some time to work out who she was, and what she wanted. After loosing all structure in her life, she took charge once again and left the ‘dolly’ life that she led. The audience could see the inner conflicts that both characters were experiencing. Nora was in a desperate situation. Mrs. Linde had begun to replace Ranks position even before his death. She was a lady who had battled tremendously throughout her life. Her struggle to support her family meant sacrificing her true love, Krogstad. She tried to create a future that would be more profitable for them yet when her husband died she was left with nothing. It was not until she reunited with Nora that her life began taking shape once again. She obtained a job with Torvald, and then rekindled her relationship with Krogstad. This relationship gave her power, and she was able to manipulate what Krogstad did. She controlled their relationship as well as Torvald and Nora’s. Torvald thought he was in control of everything; his job, Krogstad, Nora and reputation, yet found that it was all an illusion. Krogstad had the ability to destroy his name by revealing the information about the loan and forgery. Torvald no longer had the ability to protect his reputation or job. He struggled to reacquire the power that he had lost to Krogstad by demanding that Nora stay in the house and act as if they lived a perfectly normal life together, for the sake of their reputations. Nora realized that her husband was an egotist and a narcissist who put his reputation above his own wife. When Krogstad wrote again liberating them from the contract, Torvald was apologetic. His lack of understanding, love and compassion toward her had already made its mark . She left him and there was nothing he could do to stop her. A door slammed and their story was over. Through the characters’ ironic inner struggle they learn and grew engaging the audience and creating transformation. They live the life that is drawn out for them. A life that is constantly changing and evolving with the environment that surrounds them.
