I clearly remember the last period of my first day of ninth grade, already daunted by a new school. I walked in to the global studies classroom, stressed and overwhelmed, only to be confronted with a barrage of rules for the upcoming year. Our notebooks would have seven sections geography, economics, politics, culture, history, review materials and vocabulary. There would also be seven plastic protectors, file folders for handouts, and sections for miscellaneous papers. Oh, and the binder had to 1.5 inches, three rings. I sat in awe as she described this requirement, and two things crossed my mind. One, that it would be a miracle if this novice teacher could get all of her students to actually adhere to these guidelines, and two, that maybe this was all, in fact, just a joke.

Needless to say, she got every one of her students to comply. And her students, as a result, were thoroughly prepared for the regents. That, of course, was her goal. At least on the surface. After all she realized that, a notebook is nothing more than the way one organizes one’s thoughts. It has occurred to me that my expectations of myself and the values through which I strive to live might be represented in what could be called my personal notebook.

So here’s how my personal notebook would be organized. It would also have seven sections. The first one would be labeled “Commitment and Devotion.” It would illustrate the adage that “the more you put into something, the more you get out of it.” It would show my relentless determination and enthusiasm to go that extra mile, to apply thought and meaning to everyday experiences, and to remain dedicated to the things I believe in.

The second section would be “Pride.” It would describe how the key to happiness and success is to be proud of what I’ve done, to focus on doing the very best I can do, to producing the best work, and to realizing that the only expectations that really matter are those I set for myself.

The third section would be “Honesty and Integrity.” It would show how important it is to be straightforward with the people around me, to be truthful, and never to compromise my own values.

The next section would be “Grace and Humility,” and would offer guidelines to living a life that never calls attention to itself. Knowing better or knowing more than someone else doesn’t have to be displayed all the time. True knowledge should be used to help others, not to make one look better in their eyes.

The fifth section would be called “Faith.” Faith has two components faith in yourself and faith in others. My faith and courage in my convictions has acted as a beacon to overcoming any hurdles that life has thrown my way. If each of us has just one person to truly believe in us, then there’s no limit to what we can achieve.

The sixth section would be entitled “Forgiveness and Charity.”  It is important to accept the fact that everyone has flaws, that no one is perfect. Life is too short to hold grudges and everyone deserves a second chance. I have learned that it is possible to forgive without sacrificing my own standards.

The final section would be “Friendship and Love.” Interpersonal relationships are the glue that binds us and helps us to comprehend the basic human condition. In the uncertain world that we live in today, the warmth, compassion, and understanding of another human being makes it all worthwhile.

Long after Regents exams have come and gone, long after I was asked to remember who colonized Mozambique and what factors caused the fall of Rome, long after I’ve been allowed to put away those other loose-leaf binders, my personal notebook will still have value. It may not help me study for any test except the test of life, it may not prepare me for any course other than the good and true. But if I keep this notebook by my side and learn from it every day, then I will be fulfilling Mrs. Santos’ greatest dream for me. No person in possession of all of these qualities could have a finer future, and no teacher could have a finer legacy.
