Question The triangle of Max, Brian and Sally serves to illustrate three different attitudes to the world. Do you agree?
‘Cabaret’ tends to epitomize many aspects of society, and to exhibit the various unique attitudes that were present in Berlin during the years before the outbreak of World War II. Max, Sally and Brian portray three distinct temperaments quite clearly. But although they are primarily different to one another, they are all closely linked by their involvement in the moral decadence and the decay of the society.
Sally wants to live out her dream and cares only about the excitement and the stimulation that life has to offer her. She feels that life is short and that we should do all that we can, to enjoy it while it lasts. It is through this theory that Sally becomes an element of this decaying society. She represents the part of the community that is far too busy having fun, to realise what is going on outside the confines of the cabaret. But Sally is not completely conscious of what she is doing, she seems to unwittingly ignore all the signs and symbols that are being shown to her. She does realise that the world can be a cold and a cruel place, yet she does not understand the level to which this fact extends.

Max represents the aristocrats who are aware of what is going on yet refuse to do anything to stop it. He is part of an elite group who gets what they want when they want it. He doesn’t try to hide who he is; he knows that he is a thoroughly amoral individual. Max is dashing and handsome, a true symbol of the ruling classes. He is very aware of the moral decadence in his society, and he enjoys taking part in it. But what he doesn’t understand, is that there will be grim consequences to his actions. Max feels that he is above consequences. He acts as a puppeteer towards Sally and Brian, but it doesn’t even cross his mind that one day the strings of society could be controlled by some one else.
Brian represents the outsider, the observer, looking in on the situation and starting to realise what is going on. But Brian is not in Berlin to change the world; he is there for the thrill, the excitement. Although he is prepared to act against the Nazi movements, it seems to be more of a release for his own personal problems, and not for the good of the entire community. Brian likes to stick to what he already knows, to what he is at ease with. He tends to use Sally to find out what the flip side of the coin is really like. And once he has had a taste for this different lifestyle he retreats and goes back to where he feels safe and sheltered.
All three individuals are involved in the morally decadent acts of society, although they were to varying degrees. For Sally it is her way of life, or how she would like her life to permanently be. For Max it is a breakaway from his normally formal routine. For Brian it is a peep into a life he has not yet discovered, he is not sure whether he fits, or if he is comfortable with this way of life. ‘Cabaret’ seems to make an appropriate example of these three people, as aspects of the society in Berlin that most of us would rather forget.
