Sylvia Plath’s, Mirror

This poem is about a mirror with an unemotional character that is human like. The mirror shows its character as it announces in the first line of the poem, “I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions” (1). The mirror shows that whatever it sees it reflects without prejuidious. In the second line the mirror states, “I am not cruel, only truthful”. (4) The personality of the mirror is unbiased and the reflections are clear and truthful even when the truth is unwanted. The mirror is not affected or its judgment is never clouded, it simply reflects only what is sees and whomever looks into this mirror is faced with harsh are pleasant realities.

During the second portion of the poem the mirror changes identity and it is now a lake with a women looking into it at her reflection. It states, “Now I am a lake” (10) A mirror and lake are the same in many ways but they are also different in many ways. A mirror is stable and is usually placed on a wall and the reflections are exactly what you see. In a lake you can also see reflections but they are not always exact. Sometimes the reflections are elongated and waverly and can be penetrated by touching the water.

The woman who is looking into the lake is searching for her true identity. Because the woman does not like what she sees she turns to candlelight or moonlight. She turns to these things because she doesn’t want to face the truth. Candlelight and moonlight hide scares and blemishes, this woman wants to hide her imperfections. The ending of the poem shows the real reason why she goes to the lake and every once in a while she allows the moon and candlelight to lie to her. The woman in the mirror is afraid of growing old or her appearance changing but her growing old cannot be stopped as the poem states it, “Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish” (18).
