THE CATCHER AND THE RYE

Holden Caulfield is the main character and narrator in the book “The Catcher and the Rye” written by J.D Salinger. The story takes place at Pency Prep and on his way home from school during the Christmas Holiday. Holden hates Pency and all the other Prep schools he had been to, he says that there are filled with “phonies”. Since he didn’t like the schools he went to, he never did any work and would get kicked out. He wasn’t going to be allowed back at Pency after the break so he decided to leave for break a few days early. He didn’t tell his parents that he got kicked out or that he was coming home early, so he had a few days to kill before he could go home.

Holden came from a wealthy family. His parents didn’t really take much interest in what he did, as an example, he asked his mother to bye him a pair of racing skates but she bought him hockey skates instead. He had two brothers Allie and D.B and a younger sister, Phoebe. Allie had died; and Holden had a very close connection with him. Sometimes he would still talk aloud to him. D.B was a phony though, in Holden’s eyes. He was a writer and he went to Hollywood to write movies and Hollywood was filled with phonies. Phoebe, his younger sister “killed anyone with sense” as he would say, and she always knew what he was talking about.

Even though Holden would judge people a lot, he still had manners and was sensitive. He hated Pency, but still needed to say good-bye. He wasn’t really involved in school, but was more of an observer. He would watch the football games from on the hill behind the stands. When he was ready to leave Pency he took one last look down the corridor, sort of crying and yield at the top of his lungs “Sleep tight you morons!” he just wanted some closer. He had this red haunting cap of his that he would like to ware. He would ware it in his room or when he was out, he liked to put it on backwards with the peck at the back it made him feel good. He also was a protector, a protector of the innocent; he worried about the ducks in the lagoon, and what happens to them in the winter. He thinks about them quite a bit and even asks his cab driver about them.

Holden had a problem with lying; he was terrific liar and would lie for no reason at all. He told Mr. Spencer that he had to go because he had to pick up his equipment from the gym when he doesn’t even keep it there. On the train he met Ms. Marrow who was the mother of Ernest Marrow, a boy that went to Pency with him. He told her that his name was Rudolf Schmitt and that the reason he was leaving school early was because he had to get an operation on his brain to remove a tumor. He also lies about his age and going to South Africa with his Grandmother.

He was also having flashes of depression, everything made him depressed, in his room after a fight with Stradlater he all of a sudden felt so lonesome, and almost wished he was dead. While walking on the street every time he crossed the road he felt he was going to disappear and he would ask Allie to keep him here and thank him when we reached the other side. The fact that there wasn’t any cars on the road even made him depressed. The more he got depressed the less he was eating and his health started to deteriorate. He started to get irrational, yelling at Sally but he didn’t realize how he was acting. He even said that he didn’t mind dieing.

I see Holden Caulfield is an intelligent person who appears to be a manic depressant. He over-analyzes everything and everyone to the point where he feels lonesome and depressed, even those that are close to him make him feel this way. Life does not seem to bring him much enjoyment, pleasure or fulfillment and he dwells on dieing frequently. The one thing that brings him joy appears to be Phoebe. She is the only person that he feels understand him. In his eyes, she is perfect and he wants the world to she her.
