Exegesis on Job 1, 11-1


The first chapter of Job is basically setting up this sort of controversy between Satan and God. God asks if Satan has considered his servant, Job. Job is described as the greatest man in the East. He is very blessed, having seven sons, three daughter, as well as a plentiful supply of oxen, donkeys, camels, and sheep, so it is easy to see why Job would be considered so great. Satan challenges Job’s character by saying “Does Job fear God for nothing? Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has?”(Job 1-10). “But stretch your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face,”(Job 111). In saying this, Satan assumes that if Job had everything taken away from him, he would not have faith in God. The only reason Job is a God-fearing and blameless man is because he has been so blessed in life. This is an attack not only on Job’s character (saying that men do right only when it is profitable to do so), but on God’s character as well. He is simply saying that God is not worthy of such worship by His merits alone. Thus, the stage is set for the most challenging test of Job’s life.


After Job loses everything (including his family and property), he tears off his robe, shaves his head, and falls to the ground. Yet, he does not curse God. He even praises Him “…may the name of the Lord be praised,”(Job 11).

After all of this, Job’s friends that come to counsel him (Eliphaz, Zophar, and Naamathite) end up doing more harm than good. Eliphaz advises that the innocent do not suffer, but the wicked do, implying that Job is indeed a sinner and deserved all of this harm. Job’s “friends” go on accusing him, yet Job is more great a man than any of them. Job’s response to these men expresses his despair, but also gives a hint to the kingly and prophetic Messiah previously discussed. “To God belong wisdom and power, counsel and understanding are His,”(Job 11). He goes on to describe the extent of God’s power, and requests to speak to Him.


In chapter 14, Job describes his idea of life. He says it is brief and troublesome, and that man’s hope is slowly eroded as he goes through life until he dies and there is no more. “…so man lies down and does not rise; till the heavens are no more, men will not awake or be roused from their sleep,”(Job 141). This passage seems to hint that Job does not believe in the afterlife. Usually, when describing life after death, there is some sort of reference to a resurrection of the soul, and it seems to be absent in this verse. Perhaps it is because Job is in so much despair, he does not believe that any god would do this to him, and therefore believes there is no God or afterlife.


In chapter 1, Job says that God considers him an enemy. He laments the loss of his family, property, and the fact that his friends ridicule him. Yet, in the last few verses, he reaffirms his faith in God. “I know that my Redeemer lives,”(Job15). Job says that after he dies, when he is “apart” from his flesh, then will he see God. This seems to be the notion of a resurrection. He then warns his friends that they should be careful not to ridicule him, because their judgment days will also come. While Job laments and cries that God has indeed caused this harm against him, he does not abandon God. This is the sort of answer to Satan’s test that unselfish piety does indeed exist in the hearts of some men. This scenario between God, Satan, and Job seems to imply that one should have faith in God no matter what happens in life. This could have been written to put fear in the hearts of men, such as the poor or unfortunate, at this particular time in history, so that they would continue to be servants, slaves, tenant farmers, etc and not challenge what society (a.k.a. God) has handed them.
