In today’s world, sports have gone to a new level of competition and excitement. Most sports nowadays consist of stronger, faster, smarter, and more prepared athletes . Young teenagers all over the world start training at a very competitive level to succeed and make a career at the sport that they love. Everyday , athletes become stronger and better at there sport at a young age, this is happening because teenagers are physically training every single day non stop to improve there skills and perform better at there sport. Teenagers will train allday, everyday, just to succeed and accomplish there dreams of becoming professional athletes, but dreams are very often ruined because these athletes push there bodies to the extreme without rest and run into serious physical injuries.

Competitive sports are lots of fun, but they can also be very stressful on your body. Training everyday without proper stretching and lack of rest can lead to very serious injuries that could jeopardize your athletic career. All the time we hear about sport injuries that occur at a professional level, at a amateur level, and even during an activity in a school gym class. Sport injuries occur all the time, and they can’t always be prevented, but there are things you can do to decrease the chances of them happening. The best things you can do are to have a good warmup before doing any activity, have enough sleep and rest, a good diet, and to stay in good shape so that when you play a sport there is not as much stress on your body and you are not as tired .

My name is Carlos Martinez, and I have put together a report based on my experience with sport injuries and how I have dealt with them.

I began to play baseball when I was 10 years old as a hobby, by the age of 14, I had committed myself to this sport and developed a dream to become a professional baseball player. At the age of 15, I was selected to play in a very competitive team in the AA league of the OBA( Ontario Baseball Association ) called the Ottawa Hitmen. I had never played in a competitive team and did not know what to expect, the first practices were awful for me because I was not in the proper physical shape, I would throw up after every practice because my body could not keep up with this intense training, as the weeks went buy I started to become stronger and faster, and I no longer had a problem with our weekly practices. When the season began, I started off as the back up catcher and got to play a few times a week, as the season progressed the starting catcher began to struggle behind the plate, then I got what I thought at the time was great news, I had become the starting catcher, I was so excited to play everyday and perform to my expectations. As the weeks past the other catcher continued to struggle and I noticed that I was now playing every game, every inning. 50 games had passed and I began to get sharp pains in my knees, right elbow, and right shoulder. I would spend every night wrapped with bags of ice, but I did not approach my coaches about the pains because they were very strict and I knew they would not like the news, although I had these pains, I was playing better then ever, throwing out every runner attempting to steal and swingging a hot bat. The pains began to get worse but I did not say a thing until a cold september day when we were playing a very important game in a big tournament in Cornwall. It was a close game in the last few innings and I had thrown out a personal best 5 runners attempting to steal second base, there was a runner on first base and I knew that my coaches were counting on me to throw this runner out if he ran, before the inning had started I told my coach that my arm was really sour probably because I had thrown so much and it was very cold outside and he told me “be strong Carlos, this is when I need you most, just two more inning” , this is what I thought about before the pitch when I thought the runner would go and he did run, when I received the ball , I got up and threw as hard as I could to second base and “snap”, I felt like I had been stabbed in my arm with a thousand knives and this is when my problems began

Tennis Elbow/ Lateral epicondylitis

Tennis elbow is inflammation or degeneration of the tendon that attaches to the bony bit (lateral epicondyle) on the outside of the arm. It got its name from tennis players because they tend to get it often. The cause in tennis is a bad backhand technique or a grip that is too small. In my case, I was not tought a good throwing technique, I did not stretch enough before games and I di not give my body the rest it needed.

Symptoms include

· Pain on the bony bit on the outside of the elbow.

· Weakness in the wrist

· Pain in the outside of the elbow when the hand is bent back(extended) at the wrist against resistance.

· Pain on the outside of the elbow when trying to straighten the fingers against resistance.

· Pain when pressing in on the bony bit on the outside of the elbow.

What to do?

· Ice the injury for two days(0 mins on up to six times a day)

· Rest

· A number of braces and supports are available to help reduce the load on the elbow enabling it to heal.

What can a sports injury specialist or doctor do?

· Apply ultrasound or laser treatment.

· Use massage therapy

· Prescribe anti-inflammatory medication.

· Operate if the usual treatments have failed.

In my situation, I had a very bad tendonitis(tennis elbow) so I had to do 6 months of physiotherapy and muscle strenghtening exercises.

Inflammation of the biceps tendon at the elbow.

Inflammation of the biceps tendon is when the tendon of the bicep inserts into the inside of the elbow and can become inflamed if it is overused.

Symptoms include

· A thickening and redness over the biceps tendon.

· Pain or discomfort on the inside of the elbow when you write.

· Pain or discomfort when you bend the arm against resistance.

What to do about it?

· Rest until discomfort has gone.

· Apply heat and use a heat retainer.

· See a sports injury specialist.

What can a sports injury specialist do?

· Apply ultrasound or laser treatment.

· Prescribe a rehabilitation programme.

In my situation, I had to do months of physiotherapy (laser treatment) and muscle strenghtening exercises(weights).

I got inflammation of the biceps tendon because of overuse of my arm and not giving it enough rest. Also not stretching properly.

Rotator Cuff Injury

The rotator cuff muscles control rotation of the shoulder. They consist of the infraspinatus, teres minor and supradspinatus which rotate the shoulder outwards and the subscapularis which is one of the muscles which rotate the shoulder inwards.

These muscles are put under a great deal of strain especially in throwing events such as baseball. A sudden sharp pain in the shoulder would indicate a possible rupture of a tendon, while a gradual onset is more likely to be inflammation.

Symptoms also include

· Pain on overhead activity such as throwing.

· Pain when you bend the arm and rotate it outwards against resistance.

· Pain in the shoulder which is worse at night.

· Stiffness in the shoulder joint.

What to do?

· Rest and ice the shoulder for to 4 days depending on how bad the injury is.

· If the acute stage is over, pain and inflammation have settled down apply heat.

What can a sports injury specialist or doctor do?

· Prescribe anti-inflammatory medication.

· Apply ultrasound or laser treatment.

· Use sport massage or stretching techniques.

· Operate if needed.

Again, I got rotator cuff injury because I was not taught a proper throwing technique, I did not stretch properly, and did not give my body the rest it needed(OVERUSED).

Medial Ligament Sprain

Injury to the medial ligament often occurs after an impact to the outside of the knee when the knee is slightly bent. The ligaments on the inside of the knee get stretched and can sometimes tear.

My symptoms

· Significant tenderness on the inside of the knee on the medial ligament.

· No swelling

· When the knee is bent to 0 degrees and force is applied to the outside of the knee, there is pain and laxity in the joint.

What to do?

· Apply R.I.C.E.( rest, ice, compression, elevation) to the injure knee.

· Rest from training

· Wear a hinged knee brace to support the joint.

A sports Injury Specialist or Doctor could

· Apply a support bandage or plaster cast.

· Apply sports massage techniques to accelerate rehabilitation.

· Operate.

· Use ultrasound or laser treatment.

After starting physiotherapy for my arm, the doctor also found that I had a medial ligament sprain. This caused a lot of pain to my knees when I stopped exercising, and I could not sit in a movie theatre without having my legs stretched, it would hurt just to keep my knees bent for 5 minutes.

I had to do one year of physiotherapy before finally I recovered. I did ultrasound, laser treatment, muscle strenghtening exercises, and stretching exercises.

The cause of me getting a medial ligament sprain was always getting down into my catcher position and not giving my knees the rest that they needed, and also did not stretch my knees properly.

All the information given above is the cause of not giving my body the rest it needed, I also did not take my stretching time seriously enough and I should have stopped playing as soon as the pain began. I learned a lot from that baseball season it changed my life, it made my dream much harder because I can no longer throw as hard as I used to, and I also cannot play catcher anymore which was the position I performed best at. But that as not stopped me , I still play baseball, I know play third base and I am quiet comfortable at that position, and most importantly, I still have a dream.
