Amerijuana

By Tyler Pedersen

For years just hearing the words “marijuana, pot, dope, weed, etc.” have perked up the ears of Americans everywhere. I cant remember the last time that I watched an hour of tv or listened to the latest music without hearing someone refer to reefer. Because of that very fact one question comes to mind…why? What is so intriguing about pot that Americans have become so obsessed with it? Well today I am going to answer that question and tell you three reasons why America has become so obsessed with marijuana; entertainment, the government, and the mystery behind the plant itself.

First, I know that I am not the first person to realize that there has been a rash of weed related media from movies such as “Half-Baked” and “How High” to bands such as The Kottonmouth Kings and Afro-Man. Now, I have caught myself enjoying all of those examples and more from time to time and because of that it is impossible for me to ignore the marijuana issue and I’m sure that I’m not the only person with that problem. So what is it about marijuana that artists feel the need to include it in their art? One good reason is the fact that marijuana is still a very taboo subject, I even feel awkward giving a speech about it. But despite of it being unaccepted, marijuana is still going strong in the entertainment business. Many artists who strive to stand out above the rest and “rebel” find an easy outlet through using drugs as their medium, especially marijuana. Thus it is hard to listen to any recent rap album or watch a popular teen movie without an onslaught of weed related material.

Another key ingredient to “Mary’s” popularity is the government’s everlasting “war on drugs.” The government was first scared off by marijuana when Mexican immigrants brought it into El Paso, Texas and an anti-marijuana ordinance was passed. According to Ron Mann’s documentary “Grass”, $00 billion dollars were spent battling marijuana during the Clinton administration along with 600,000 arrests. And still the “war on drugs” has made no progress. Weed is still easy as ever to get a hold of and there are millions of recreational users. So what is so dangerous about pot that so much time and money is wasted trying to get rid of it? That is just another factor in America’s obsession with marijuana. It is ironic that through all of the government’s hard work trying to destroy pot all it has done is make it more interesting.

There is a popular Ronald Reagan sponsored slogan that says “pot is bad for you, though we are not sure why…” and I believe that still holds true today which brings me to my next point, what is it about pot and its seemingly harmless effects puts it so high on everyone’s table? In recent studies weed has been shown to be less harmful then both tobacco and alcohol. Also, tests have shown that marijuana is an excellent medicine for cancer patients and with the passage of Proposition 15 in California which legalizes the usage of medicinal marijuana with a doctors permission, its amazing that pot is still so criminalized. If smoking a joint will keep down a dying man’s pain or give a malnourished girl the munchies then I’m all for it.

Ultimately, I believe there is only one solitary reason why America is so overly obsessed with marijuana and that is the fact that nobody understands it. There is nothing more interesting then the unknown. Ron Mann summed up our nations pot fascination when he said, “(marijuana is) just not acknowledged as being popular. People don’t admit that they smoke pot because no one would admit that they are a criminal. Would you admit that you smoke pot? It’s an unpopular history. There’s still a taboo about it. Most people I know are still hypocritical about it. In a way we haven’t come to terms with marijuana.” Will America ever understand pot? Will the obsession ever end? From the looks of things marijuana is here to stay and we better get used to it or the fascination may get out of hand.
