Watergate affair, in U.S. history, series of scandals involving the administration of President Richard M. Nixon; more specifically, the burglarizing of the Democratic party national headquarters in the Watergate apartment complex in Washington, D.C.

The Watergate affair signifies the web of political scandals that plagued President Richard Nixon from 17 until his resignation in 174.

The beginning of the Watergate scandal began in June 171, when the Pentagon Papers were published. In September 171, the “plumbers” unit was created to plug leaks in the administration. This resulted in the burglary of a psychiatrist’s office to find files on Daniel Ellsberg, the former defense analyst who leaked the Pentagon Papers.

On May 8, 17, bugging equipment was installed at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate hotel and office complex in Washington, D.C. This was the first of two burglaries to occur.

On June 17, 17, during the presidential campaign of that year, Washington, D.C., police officers arrested seven employees of the Committee to Re-Elect the President (CREEP) as they were breaking into the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters in the Watergate apartment complex. Five men were arrested during this break-in. Not only had Nixon, his aides, and his reelection campaign conspired to sabotage the president’s Democratic challengers, but also they were now attempting to impede the investigation of the Watergate case.

There was never any evidence that Nixon ordered the break-in or that he was aware of plans to burglarize the Democratic National Committee. But from the start, Nixon was involved in the cover-up of the incident. By the time of the Watergate break-in, “the money to finance such “pranks” was being illegally collected through the Committee to Re-elect the President and placed under the control of the White House staff” (Bailey, Cohen, Kennedy 7).

The cover-up began to unravel as various people, including John Dean, legal counsel to the president, began to believe they were being set up as fall guys, and began to cooperate with prosecutors. As a result, of John Dean’s cooperation, Nixon dismissed him at the end of April. After Nixon’s “I’m not a crook” speech, Dean testified to the Ervin Committee that “there had been a cover-up, and the Nixon had approved it”(Emery 170). Another devastating disclosure was that a Whit House aide told the committee that Nixon had “installed a taping system in the White House and that many of the conversations about Watergate had been recorded” (Bailey, Cohen, Kennedy 74). After a yearlong battle for Nixon to turn over the tapes, Archibald Cox took him to court in October 17. Nixon pleaded “executive privilege”, and refused to turn over the tapes and ordered Cox fired.

On February 6, 174 the House of Representatives votes to authorize the House Judiciary Committee to investigate whether grounds exist for the impeachment of President Nixon. The hearings of Nixon’s impeachment begin before the House Judiciary Committee on May , 174.

On July 4, 174, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the president must surrender the tapes. No sooner were the tapes handed over than investigators learned that “sections of certain recordings were missing, including eighteen minutes of key conversation during which Nixon first mentioned the Watergate burglary” (Emery 410). A secretary tried to take the blame, but experts later concluded that missing segments had been intentionally deleted.

Three days later, the House Judiciary Committee dramatically voted to recommend three articles of impeachment. “The first being, obstruction of justice through the payment of “hush money” to witness and the withholding of evidence. The second being, abuse of power through using federal agencies to deprive citizens of their constitutional rights.

The third being, defiance of Congress by withholding the tapes“ (Foner and Garraty 1). But before the House of Representatives could meet to vote on impeachment, Nixon handed over the complete set of White House tapes. On August , 174, fully aware that the evidence on the tapes implicated him in the cover-up, Nixon resigned from office, being the president to ever do so.

With the aftermath of Watergate, Congress responded to the revelations with several pieces of legislation designed to curb executive power. The first was the War Powers Act of 17. This requires the president to inform Congress within forty-eight hours if U.S. troops were being deployed in combat abroad and to withdraw troops after sixty das unless Congress specifically approved their stay. In an effort to correct abuses of campaign funds, Congress enacted legislation in 174 that set new ceilings on political contributions and expenditures. And in reaction to the Nixon claim of “executive privilege” as a means of withholding evidence, Congress strengthened the 166 Freedom of Information Act to require “prompt responses to requests for information from government files and to place on government agencies the burden of proof for classifying information as secret” (Bailey, Cohen, Kennedy 78).

Nixon’s resignation pleased his critics but also initiated a prolonged crisis of confidence. A poll taken in 174 asked people how much faith they had in the executive branch of government. Only 14 percent answered “a great deal” while 4 percent said “hardly any.” Restoring credibility and respect thus became the primary challenge facing Nixon’s successors.

In addition to the governmental upheaval that resulted from the Watergate affair, the scandal provoked widespread loss of confidence in public officials and tended to foster a general suspicion of government agencies.

Custom Essays on Corruption of power

CORRUPTION

OF

POWER

The corruption of power causes trouble in this world and in worlds that don’t exist. In history people have seen examples of this happening. When people gain power they begin to go corrupt. For example Napoleon Bonaparte gained power and began to conquer all his neighboring countries. Adolph Hitler went corrupt when he decided to kill all of who weren’t a part of his party and also tried to conquer the world with his horrible, genocidal ideas. In Star Wars Anikin’s power was so great that he became corrupt and joined the dark side. Therefore, power can cause corruption if a person’s heart is not pure and will not succumb to evil. Corruption only causes a person’s downfall and death. In the trilogy the Lord of the Rings, the protagonist Frodo attains the One Ring of Power. This one ring causes all who fall under its spell to become corrupt. Frodo’s mission is to destroy the ring but as he goes along the ring’s spell starts to get to him and he falls into it for a while but then realizes the importance of his mission. Few in this story have resisted the temptation of the ring while many have fallen because of it. Those with a pure heart can and will resist corruption through power.

In the book, Lord of the Rings, corruption of power was prevalent through out the book. We can relate the Dark Lord to the modern day threat of the world Saddam Hussein. When Saddam attained weapons of destruction and even more power he became corrupt and began to conquer neighboring countries. Now he has got one the largest powers, the United States of America, after him so they can destroy his unstable government so that they can establish one that will benefit the citizens of Iraq. The Dark Lord created the ring to control all other rings, given to all the other races of the earth, so that he could destroy all that was good on earth. His corruption caused a war that involved all of middle earth’s forces against his. Even though The Dark Lord Sauron had the edge because of his ring his corruption led to his death and the losing of his ring. (http//www.glyphweb.com/arda/default.htm?http//www.glyphweb.com/arda/s/sauron.html)

These events take place in a fantasy/medieval type times where dwarves, elves, ogres and wizards exist. Its starts off in a place called the Shire where little people called hobbits live. They are short hairy people who really do not like strangers and tend to keep to themselves. One strange hobbit named Bilbo likes to go on adventures and explore different areas. Bilbo one day stumbled on the one Ring of Power because Gollum lost it. After a couple of days, Bilbo began to act strangely. He became over possessive, when it came to the Ring, and he kept to himself a lot. After his 111th birthday, party Gandalf told him to give Frodo the Ring since he did not need it anymore. Bilbo was reluctant to give it to him but as soon as Gandalf put fear in to he gave it up but still a little slowly. That night the ring was given to Frodo. Now the Ring has another victim that it can pour corruption in.

The one Ring of Power has traveled through many hands and corrupted many to their graves. When Lord Sauron lost the Ring in the war for middle earth, he infected the mind of a good yet the most powerful wizard, Sarumon. Sarumon used to be kind wizard who care for the forest and was a good friend of Gandalf’s. But now the white wizard is now the Wizard of Many Colours, which means he clouded the minds of the good so that he can commit his evil deeds so that Sauron can acquire his ring. Now Sarumon uses his power and armies of ogres to terrorize middle earth, destroy the fellowship, and find the ring so that he can keep it for himself. (http//www.butterfliez.com/comp14.html)

Gollum, which is an onomatopoeic nickname from the sound he made after acquiring the ring, killed his brother for the ring because of its beauty. This can be related to the incident that happened at the Garden of Eden. Gollum, just like Cain, wanted what his brother had, but couldn’t obtain it, so out of anger killed his brother. The Ring caused him to gain extra years in his life but also caused him to live a lonely life. By killing his brother he was cast out of his family. Now he lives in caves that were once occupied by ogres constantly petting and caring for his ring or “precious”.

Sauron had the urge to rule middle earth before he created the One Ring of Power, but before that he was the servant of Morgoth. After his master’s passing, he took his place after the first age (www.glyphweb.com/arda/s/sauron.html). After he created the Ring of Power he was able to carry out his heart’s wishes now that he has the power to do so. However, since he lost his ring his body vanished but his spirit is still here and he greatly desires to get the Ring back into his hands to regain his body.

Frodo Baggins, a hobbit out of the Shire who is the weakest out of the Fellowship (a group of warriors, Gimli the dwarf, Legolas the elf from Rivendale, Borrmir, and Aragorn, that are traveling with Frodo to Mount Doom, where the Ring was created, to destroy the Ring), has the burden of carrying the Ring. This is more than anyone person can bare, even a hobbit. As he continues to journey to Mount Doom with the Fellowship the Ring gradually grabs hold of him, but his determination to get destroy it is just as great.

While Frodo was carrying the One Ring, he was beginning to fall under the spell of the ring. At first it was little things like admiring its beauty and constantly playing around with it. Now, he doesn’t want anyone touch it, he looks at it and pets it at night, and the ring even took over his body and made him go towards one of the Dark Riders. It would seem that he would not want to destroy the Ring but he does and continues to do so. When the fellowship was broken because of Borromir’s greed he began to go on the dangerous journey on his own. Even though he didn’t know the way or what lay ahead of him he let the fear or the powers of the ring affect his mission to save middle earth.

Frodo was indeed one of the strongest characters of the group. He endured the most horrible torture than anyone in the book and yet did not lose sight of his goal.

Cinderella, by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, is a story about a young girl and her struggles with her new family. Her mother dies and her father remarries. He brings his new wife into their home and with her came her two daughters. This new addition to Cinderella’s life makes her life very difficult. Her stepmother and her stepsisters make her do everything for her. She did everything from dressing them to cleaning the house to fixing their dinner. The story basically follows her stepmother’s and stepsister’s vain lifestyle and Cinderella’s ability to stay humble throughout the story. Through the vanity and humbleness the story also incorporates friendship and jealousy.

The stepmother probably felt that Cinderella would try to be the most important daughter and leave her two daughters out. So she used her position in the house to make sure that her daughters were favored. Appearance is very important to this whole story. The stepmother was always trying to make her daughters shine brighter than Cinderella. “They took away her beautiful clothes, dressed her in an old [gray] smock and gave her some wooden shoes.” (1) She did not want Cinderella to be dressed nicer than her own daughters. She knew that Cinderella was prettier than her own two daughter so she kept her hidden from people. That is reason the stepmother did not want her to go to the ball.

Throughout the whole story, Cinderella does not ask for much, and that is rewarded. She practically stays to herself and keeps out of people’s way. There is a point in which her father asks Cinderella and her stepsisters what they want from the fair. The stepsisters said the wanted “[b]eautiful dresses” and “[p]earls and jewels,” but when he asked Cinderella all she said was “break off the first branch that brushes against your hat on the way home and bring it to me.” This encompasses all of Cinderella’s humbleness. She does not want anything expensive. She just wants something personal.

In return for her humbleness Cinderella gets what she deserves. “Cinderella…went to her mother’s grave, and planted a hazel spring on it. She wept so hard that her tears fell to the ground and watered it. It grew and became a beautiful tree. Three times a day…[she] wept a prayed.” (14) With the tree came a bird that became Cinderella’s only friend. The bird was sort of like her fairy godmother. When she needed a favor the bird would do it for her. One of them is when the bird brought in other birds to help Cinderella separate the good lentils from the bad lentils twice. They did this so that Cinderella would be able to go to the ball. Her stepmother told her that she could not go because she did not have anything to wear. Cinderella asked the bird and the bird in the tree gives her those things that her stepsisters asked for dresses and jewels. With these gifts she get to go to the ball.

The stepsister’s vanity will get the best of them. Cinderella’s stepsisters only care about how they look and if it will impress people. When Cinderella got to go to the ball, she was the only one that the Prince wanted to dance with. By the end of the ball she was able to slip by him in time to get home and have no one notice that she was gone. This happened about three times until the Prince set up a trap and was left with her silver slipper. After this he set out to look for the girl whose foot fit into the slipper. When he got to Cinderella’s house no one bothered to think of Cinderella as a possible candidate. The stepmother told her daughter to try the shoe on. It did not fit and the bother told her to “[c]ut the toe off. Once you’re queen, you won’t need to go on foot anymore.” (15) The daughter did so, but the prince noticed and tried for the other daughter. To this daughter she advised for her to “[c]ut off part of your heel. Once you’re queen, you won’t need to go on foot anymore.” (15) The daughter did so, but the prince noticed this. Those are the levels that the sister would go to just to be a beautiful queen. They would go the extreme of changing their physical to please others. The stepmother put so much pressure on her two daughters. Their mother had them convinced that it was the right thing to do. In the end it did not work out for them.

Cinderella get rewarded for being humble. Being the humble person that she was Cinderella did not just pop out knowing that slipper was hers. She waited to see if anyone would call for her. Her hunch was correct and the Prince insisted on seeing Cinderella. “She sat down on a stool, took her foot out of the heavy wooden shoe, and put it into the slipper.” (15) This was the point of the story where Cinderella goes from rags to riches. This is a reward that Cinderella gets for being so humble. She gets to leave her family that have put her through so much, and now she gets to be with a family that will love her and care for her. Bring her back to what she had before her mother died.

Rewards and punishments are all over this story. The basic formula is, if you are treated bad then you get rewarded. Cinderella gets rewarded for staying true to herself. Her stepsisters get punished for using her and being vain. In the end Cinderella and her stepsisters got what the deserved.

It was only about one year ago when I was diagnosed with type II Bipolar disorder. However, I’ve had the symptoms for as long as I can remember! I am consistently reminded of all my childhood ‘outbursts,’ and I recall sitting in my room at the age of eleven tying a rope around my neck wanting to commit suicide. Everyone was quick to call me a drama queen, and write it all off as cravings for attention.

Attention was not what I wanted or needed, then or now. Dealing with Bipolar disorder is a chore that most the time seems impossible. When an individual is battling with Bipolar, they are battling a personal war that has been waged inside of them. It is like waking up in the morning and not knowing who you are going to be!

I really do enjoy being happy, and I like my life and love all the people in it. Nevertheless, depending on the day of the week that may not be how I’m feeling. As a sufferer of this disease, I have no control over my attitude, my emotions, or my moods, and not having control is the worst of all.

For a normal person, or someone not suffering from Bipolar, having their boss give them a little constructive criticism could be a good thing. For me, I would be totally devastated and have a hard time holding back tears. Has someone ever cut you off, no big deal right? Well, my take on it would be that the world was out to get me and that person was the conspirator. Can you see the distortion?

Manic-depression is the common term for Bipolar disorder. Full-blown cases of manic-depression are characterized by episodes of uncontrollable hyperactivity, often accompanied by grandiose delusions, and longer periods of incapacitating, and often-suicidal depression.

When someone is experiencing a manic episode, they will engage in high risk activities such as promiscuity, drug abuse, and perhaps criminal type behavior. During times of mania, the individual displays high irritability, increased self-esteem, higher rates of talking, as well as noticeable mood changes, and a decreased need for sleep.

Once the mania passes on comes the depression. During episodes of depression, one will feel tired, worthless, may experience weight loss, and may suffer from insomnia. Depression also diminishes interest in pleasurable activities, can cause inappropriate guilt as well as recurrent thoughts of death and suicide. Some people, including myself suffer from mixed episodes, or depression and mania at the same time.

The genetic component of this disease is strong Children are 60 percent likely to suffer if a parent is. Among identical twins, whether or not they were raised together, if one twin has the illness, the other is 80 percent likely to suffer from it. Manic depression afflicts at least 1 percent of the population, and, in contrast to most mental illnesses, the rate is considerably higher in the upper social and economic classes. (PT)

The diagnosis can only be made with careful observation over an extended period. Treatment for Bipolar Disorder usually includes education of the patient and the family about the illness, mood stabilizing medications such as lithium and Valproic acid, and psychotherapy. Mood stabilizing medications often reduce the number and severity of manic episodes, and help to prevent depression. Psychotherapy helps the patient have self understanding, adapt to stresses, rebuild self-esteem, and improve relationships.

On average, people with bipolar disorder see -4 doctors and spend over 8 years seeking treatment before they receive a correct diagnosis. Earlier diagnosis, proper treatment, and finding the right medications can help people avoid the following Suicide, the risk is highest in the initial years of the illness. Alcohol or substance abuse, more than 50% of those with bipolar disorder abuse alcohol or drugs during their illness. Marital and work problems, prompt treatment improves the prospects for a stable marriage and productive work. Treatment difficulties, there is evidence that the more mood episodes a person has, the harder it is to treat each subsequent episode and the more frequent episodes may become. Incorrect, inappropriate, or partial treatment, a person misdiagnosed as having depression alone instead of bipolar disorder may incorrectly receive antidepressants alone without anti-manic medication. This can trigger manic episodes and make the overall course of the illness worse.

There is no single, proven cause of bipolar disorder, but research strongly suggests that it is often an inherited problem related to a lack of stability in the transmission of nerve impulses in the brain. This biochemical problem makes people with bipolar disorder more vulnerable to emotional and physical stresses. If there is an upsetting life experience, substance use, lack of sleep, or other excessive stimulation, the normal brain mechanisms for restoring calm functioning dont always work properly.

So there it is in black and white that it is a disorder, a nerve problem, and yet I continue to feel ashamed and embarrassed. I feel there is no empathy or allowance for someone in my situation. I feel as if I am discriminated against in that the common idea is that I am “crazy” and everyone wants to know if I took my medication today. The worst of it all is when I was at my lowest, most suicidal point I was not to seek professional help because of the implications it could leave on my permanent public record.

Now that I know what is wrong with me, each day continues to come one by one, and that’s just how I take them one at a time. I take my medication and work with my doctors but deep in the dark crevices of my mind is the constant reminder that another ice age could be cast upon me and that my only choice is to live life to its fullest every day. For I know that there is no guarantee that my sun will shine tomorrow.

Catcher in the Rye

and Assasins

Lennon-Chapman

Catcher in the Rye is a book about adolescent dislike and loathing of everything. Holden Caulfield, the main character of the book, personifies this hatred in personable form. Mark David Chapman found countless similarities between him and the disgruntled teen-ager in the story, Holden. The story starts off in the winter, on a Monday, fairly near Christmas. Close to the time in reality when Lennon was murdered, Monday December 8th 180. The setting of the story related to Chapman’s life at that point as well. Crumby hotel rooms and lobby’s filled with perverts and morons. The prostitute in the hotel even had a relation to Chapman’s own experiences. Chapman was met by a prostitute in a similar green dress. The two of them even seemed to be heading towards the same inevitable “fall.” “This fall I think you’re riding for-it’s a special kind of fall, a horrible king. The man falling isn’t permitted to feel or hear him self hit the bottom. He just keeps falling and falling.” Holden is abhorred by the grafitti he finds on the stairway just as Chapman sees scrawled on the mirror in the apartments he works as a security guard. He had come off of his job in Hawaii as a security guard specifically to kill Lennon.

Mark Chapman believed that the very ink of the pages that the story was written on would come alive as he read them. He was living the story. He was Holden Caulfield, the catcher in the rye. After Shooting Lennon, he sat down, took the book out of his pocket and read it over one more time.

Reagan-Hinkley

Hinkley had very little stated about his life. After attempting to assassinate Reagan, he was taken to court and tried. He was eventally judged not guilty by reason of insanity. As the situation with Reagan went, the bullet pierced his lung and he was swept off to the hospital and made a near full recovery. This actually turned out to be one of the greatest things to happen to Reagan politically in his entire term. It made him the “John Wayne” of the presidency. His image strengthened and so did his public image. The entire ordeal involved Hinkley firing off six bullets total, of which hit other members of the government close to the president, missed everyone completely and one nearly killed the president.

Hinkley Also had an obsession with the actress Jodie Foster and had recently seen her in her film Taxi Driver with Robert DeNiro. He claimed to have seen the film over a dozen times. He was placed in St. Elizabeths psychiatric hospital in Washington, D.C under supervised visitation rights. He is still there.

Justice vs. Injustice

Book II of Plato’s Republic explores the concept of justice. One ethical assumption of Plato’s Republic is the following True freedom is primarily internal, rather than external; it is freedom from the non-rational patterns, not “doing whatever one pleases.” This assumption is related to Plato’s argument that the more an individual’s desires and wants are controlled by reason, the better of that person is. Plato’s argument is logical and supported by the ethical assumption above. It is important that Plato establishes his argument on justice to prove that true freedom is external. Justice will then become the basis for the state that he creates in the Republic.

There are two important questions pertaining to justice that Plato explores in Book II of the Republic. The first one is whether the individual is born naturally just or unjust. Glaucon uses the story of the Ring of Gyges to show that external forces such as wants can influence even a just person. He says that it is obvious that even a completely just person, if given the power to be invisible, would take advantage of this power and therefore follow an unjust path by doing “whatever one” pleased. This is a reasonable assumption. If an individual could take anything he wanted and not ever get caught, then it would be natural to steal from another. I would have to assume that if even a just person can fall to these external temptations than we are all born unjust. There is another point that is made from the Ring of Gyges. If one could get the goods both ways; that is being just or being unjust, then why would any rational person choose justice? It is important to look at the nature of the human self to deal with this question. This is a topic that Glaucon and Socrates spend a lot of time exploring. It seems that is would be very irrational to choose a harder path of being good if one is awarded the same things in the end whether they choose justice or not. Choosing the unjust path is not being controlled by reason, but instead is being controlled by wants and desires which leads to an existence without true freedom. If one wanted to achieve true freedom, they would need to choose the just path whether blessed with the invisibility of the Ring of Gyges or not. This choice would only come if the nature of the human self were to always be guided by reason. Therefore, the argument that true freedom is internal rather than external is true.

The second question that Book II explores is whether it is more beneficial to live a life of justice or injustice. This discussion leads to a two hypothetical people; one who is completely just and one is completely unjust. The unjust one is in actuality unjust but is given a front of justice and needs to maintain that front. The just person doesn’t only want to seem just; he wants to be actually good and just but instead is believed to be unjust. The comparison of these two types of people helps Glaucon and Socrates to decide which is happier. They compare the happier life to one of pleasure and decide that they are two different things. A life of happiness comes from being controlled by reason and therefore would make a person leading this life just and good. A life of pleasure controlled by desires and only seems good but is in reality unjust. Therefore the just one controlled by reason will then benefit more. Glaucon makes the argument that those who act unjustly will in turn have more wealth, honor, and a better life as long as they keep a reputation of being just. This is because the wealthy will be able to sacrifice more and honor the gods better than one who is poor and weak. “But they tell me that an unjust person, who has secured for himself a reputation of justice, lives the life of a god.” (Book II, 65b) Socrates agrees with this point, but still argues that a life of justice is more profitable. In class, we discussed how in the Crito, Socrates refuses to escape from jail because he would rather act justly then give in to a desire to escape. Though Socrates died and never was physically free, he achieved true freedom by following justice and not giving in to external desires. He chose to follow a just path which proves his argument that freedom is achieved internally and not by “doing whatever one pleases”.

It takes Plato the rest of the Republic to define justice as a virtue that must first be established through the state and then this will filter down to the individual. Book II uses several example to demonstrate how people are born unjust but must choose the path of justice so that they can be truly free.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS- The Fellowship of the Ring

Many times, the only way to discover one’s inner strength is when one is faced with great and unspeakable dangers. In times like these, they uncover in themselves strength that they never knew existed. A primary example of this is in the book The Fellowship of the Ring. Set in the land of Middle Earth, the hobbit Frodo finds himself bearing a great burden to destroy the One Ring, an all-powerful ring that, if in the wrong hands, could bestow upon its bearer the power to enslave the world. The task he finds himself faced with is not a simple one, for a whole host of the enemy’s evil servants are rampaging the country in search of the great ring he bears. Along with a fellowship of elves, dwarves, hobbits and men, Frodo sets out on a perilous journey to cast the destructive ring into the fires of Mount Doom, which lie deep in the heart of the enemy kingdom. He sets out on this voyage assuming that he must rely on others for protection, and believing that he is incapable of surviving any kind of great evil or dangers alone. He would soon learn that in the next few years he would be faced with great trials, and an inner strength in him would be unearthed, allowing him to conquer and overcome anything in his path.

The first time he is faced with grave dangers, the courage inside him is still faint and not yet fully uncovered, and he fights with himself inwardly before he finally allows it to burst forth. When captured by a malicious Barrow-wight, Frodo initially contemplated slipping on the ring and deserting his friends as a last resort to save himself and the ring. “At first Frodo felt as if he had indeed been turned into stone by the incantation. Then a wild thought of escape came to him. He wondered if he put on the Ring, whether the Barrow- wight would miss him, and he might find some way out. He thought of himself running free over the grass, grieving for Merry, and Sam, and Pippin, but free and alive himself.”(p.15) Although he dearly loves his companions, he still realizes that destroying the Ring is the first priority, and assumes that running away is the only way he can save himself.

“But the courage that had been awakened in him was now too strong he could not leave his friends so easily. He wavered, groping in his pocket, and then fought with himself again; and as he did so the arm crept nearer. Suddenly resolve hardened in him, and kneeling he stooped low over the bodies of his companions. With that strength he had he hewed at the crawling arm near the wrist, and the hand broke off; but at the same moment the sword splintered up to the hilt.”(p.15)

Frodo, in a reckless attempt to save his friends and himself from the Barrow- wight, who is about to kill them, seizes a nearby sword and hacks the hand off of the menacing phantom. He suddenly realizes that he possesses courage and strength that has been hidden away until this moment of grave peril, where it rose to the occasion magnificently and saves not only his own life but also the lives of his friends. The strength that he roused in himself at that time was a physical bravery that he knew deep inside he could call out if ever his need was great enough.

When faced with the one thing that he fears the most, the Black Riders, or the Ringwraiths, Frodo succumbs to the unusual desire to put on the great ring of Power, but still manages to draw forth an unseen and veiled power in him that even he doesn’t know exists. The power drawn from him in this case seems to be some sort of supernatural or mythical power, where he discovers himself calling out the authoritative, commanding names of great Elf-lords that he has never spoken of or even heard of before.

“In one hand he [the Ringwraith] held a long sword, and in the other a knife; both the knife and the hand that held it glowed with a pale light. He sprang forward and bore down on Frodo. At that moment Frodo threw himself forward on the ground, and he heard himself crying aloud O Elbereth! Gilthoniel! At the same time he struck at the feet of his enemy.”(p.6)

After the ordeal had passed, and the Ringwraiths had been driven back, Frodo ends up with a deadly wound on his shoulder, the wound from the cursed dagger of one of the Black Riders. While Aragorn, Frodo’s newfound companion and guide, surveys the leftover evidence of the encounter, he discovers one of the dark cloaks of the Riders with a slash near the bottom, where Frodo struck out with his sword. “‘This was the stroke of Frodo’s sword,’ he said. ‘The only hurt that it did to his enemy, I fear; for it is unharmed, but all blades perish that pierce that deadly King. More deadly to him was the name of Elbereth.’”(p.65) The names that Frodo called out in his anguish proved to be more deadly to his enemy than his sword. Somehow, Frodo had some hidden power inside of him that gave him the authority and knowledge to cry the name of Elbereth when all else seemed to be in despair.

Frodo once again proved his own strength, even after he was severely wounded and faced a host of Ringwraiths alone. He was being pursued on horse by the grim Black Riders, and the white Elf-Horse Frodo rode managed to surpass even the speed of the Black Rider’s great steeds. Finally, having crossed the ford, Frodo confronted them, challenging them, even in his frailty of body and mind.

“Suddenly the foremost Rider spurred his horse forward. It checked at the water and reared up. With a great effort Frodo sat upright and brandished his sword. ‘Go back!’ he cried. ‘Go back to the land of Mordor, and follow me no more!’ His voice sounded thin and shrill in his own ears. The Riders Halted, but Frodo had not the power of Bombadil. His enemies laughed at him with a harsh and chilling laughter. ‘Come back! Come back!.…To Mordor we will take you!’

‘Go back!’ he whispered. ‘The Ring! The Ring!’ they cried with deadly voices; and immediately the leader urged his horse forward into the water… ‘By Elbereth and Luthien the Fair,’ said Frodo with a last effort, lifting up his sword, ‘you shall have the Ring nor me!’” (p.86)

Frodo proved a worthy bearer of the Ring, and a noble match for the wickedness of the Ringwraiths. Even when his body and mind were despairing, and he stood alone upon the shores of the great ford, he turned to face the evil that pursued them, and mustered up the last remnants of his strength to condemn them back to Mordor. “‘Yes, fortune or fate have helped you,’ said Gandalf. ‘Not to mention courage. For your heart was not touched and only your shoulder was pierced; and that was because you resisted to the last.’”(p)

Throughout his whole journey of tribulations, Frodo called forth strength in many different forms. He found that despite his small, common appearances, he held authority and power in his hand, and learned to depend on himself and fight when there was no one beside him. He discovered the true meaning of what Gandalf had said about him; “There’s more to this hobbit than appears to the eye.” Frodo learned that courage could be found in the strangest of places, even within himself, if faced with trials that truly tests his strength and his will to overcome.

An abortion is a termination of pregnancy before birth that results in or is accompanied by the death of the fetus. Abortion is never an easy decision, but women have been making that choice for thousands of years, and for many good reasons. Some abortions occur naturally due to abnormal development or because of an injury or disorder that prevents the mother from carrying the pregnancy to term. This is a type of spontaneous abortion, and is commonly known as a miscarriage. Other abortions are intentionally brought on because the pregnancy is unwanted or it presents a risk to the women’s health.

Induced abortions have become one of the most intense issues of the late 0th century. With the help of modern medicine induced abortions have been made simpler and less dangerous. However the debate over abortion has led to legal battles in the courts, in the congress of the United States, and in legislatures. This has spilled into many arguments that sometimes end up violent at clinics where abortions are performed.

I said earlier that abortion has become one of the most widely debated ethical issues of our time. Well, on one side you have pro-choice supporters. These individuals favor the reproductive rights of a woman, including the right to choose to have an abortion. Then you have the pro-life supporters, who oppose to the whole idea of abortion unless under severe circumstances, like the mother’s life being threatened by carrying a pregnancy to term.

Many arguments have been made on both sides of the abortion issue, however no compromise has ever been reached, since in the public policy debate, the pro-choice and the pro-life have completely different views about the status of a fetus. One believing the fetus has no rights and other believing it has the rights of a human being from the time of conception.

Write your Abortions research paper

Many women who consider themselves on the pro-life side are worried about possible threats to reproductive rights and the danger of allowing the government to decide what medical options are available to them.

Many individuals on all sides of the controversy feel that this political debate has pretty much come to a stalemate because it ignores the tone of the issue. In response, abortion debate participants find common ground in the fact that this issue is surrounded by complicated, difficult questions that require more than just reduced pro-life or pro-choice rhetoric.

The act of forgiveness usually involves two or more parties, in which case, the victim or victims can choose to or not to forgive the wrongdoer for his or her wrongdoings. In today’s society, one usually does not forgive another until they feel that some sense of justice has been served, be it that the wrongdoer has served their time for this wrongful act, or they have given a simple apology. “My Brother’s Guilt Became My Own,” by Bill Babbit, tells the story of how he tried to take care of his younger brother Manny and in turn, caused his brother’s death. In Trudy Govier’s “Forgiveness and the Unforgivable,” she speaks on different scenarios of forgiveness and what seems to be forgivable and what is not. Trudy Govier speaks of different scenarios of forgiveness. She specifically touches on three of these scenarios The Classic Scenario, Quasi-Forgiveness, and Unilateral Forgiveness. Although the law punishes offenders for their unjust acts, are these offenders really always so unforgivable? Not always. When the offender does not repent for their acts, then they are not forgivable, but if they do repent, they may be forgivable, but not to the point where they can go without being punished. When it comes to justice, forgiveness does not always make everything all right.

In The Classic Scenario, it is said that, “A wrongdoer, or offender, may come to realize that he has done something wrong and to feel sorry about it. He is prepared to acknowledge his wrongdoing; he repents, approaching the victim to apologize and ask for forgiveness. If she takes the offender’s expressions of remorse to be genuine and sincere, the victim may be prepared to forgive him…” This scenario took place between Bill and Manny. Manny forgave Bill for turning him in to the authorities. He did not forget what he did, but he chose to let his angry feelings go and forgive Bill. Most people do not “forgive and forget,” they simply choose to stop resenting their wrongdoer. Leah never got the chance to forgive Manny, because was dead. Leah’s family and society had the chance to forgive Manny, but it is unclear if they did or not.

Piers Benns scenario fits better with Manny and Leah’s situation. Piers Benn argues his case in the case of Quasi-Forgiveness. He says that “it is the victim and only the victim who is properly entitled to forgive an offender, and if someone is not entitled to forgive another, he cannot do it.” This does seem to make sense, but what if the victim is deceased? Is it so that offenders can never be forgiven and will always be seen as” objects of moral indignation?” No, there are also “secondary and tertiary victims,” whom are perfectly capable of forgiving. These secondary and tertiary victims are the friends, family, and the community that were left behind by the deceased. Manny took the life of Leah Schendel. It is not evident if Leah’s family and friends forgave Manny for taking her life, but when it comes to Bill being forgiven for turning Manny in, he was forgiven. Yes Manny did forgive Bill for turning him in, but Manny was not able to forgive Bill for him being executed. The secondary victims being Bill’s mother and siblings forgave him and Bill hopes that Manny’s children will forgive him. Most likely, society will forgive Bill because Manny is no longer a threat. In this case, someone other than the direct victim is able to forgive.

In the last scenario, Unilateral Forgiveness, Margaret Homlgren says that, “…victims of wrongdoing must work through a process of responding to that wrongdoing in order to reach a state of genuine forgiveness. The process is central to the restoration of a victim’s self- respect, and forgiveness is psychologically and ethically inappropriate whenever it is incomplete. But once this process is complete, Holmgren argues forgiveness is always appropriate, whether the offender repents or not.” This is not always correct. Just because the offender has gone through the punishment issued to them for their acts, this does not make him or her forgivable. It is one thing if the offender shows remorse and is genuinely sorry for what they did. Depending on the crime, they may deserve forgiveness, but if they do not forgive at all, they are almost certain not to be forgiven.

Order Custom Essay on Forgiveness

This is Bill’s situation. Bill forgave Manny for killing Leah, but many will say that Bill was wrong for turning his brother in without taking the proper steps in the process such as having a lawyer present. Bill’s process of responding to his wrongdoing was the grief that he endured before and even after his brother’s death. In this situation, Holmgren’s theory is correct because Manny chose to forgive Bill. Manny’s forgiving Bill helped Bill to forgive himself for what he did. Bill forgave Manny for what he did, but his forgiveness did nothing to help the situation because Manny still lost his life.

Manny’s situation is a little different when it comes to his victims. It is understandable for Leah’s family and even society to choose not to forgive Manny for Leah’s death, but the state is a different story. The government knew of Manny’s psychological problems, but they still executed him. If anyone should have forgiven Manny, it should have been the government. They should have been able to look at the big picture and see that Manny did not mean to do what he did.

It is when the offender has a sort of “kiss my ass” mentality, that they do not deserve forgiveness. This is not the case with Manny. He killed, Leah Schendel, yes this is a fact, but does that mean he was not sorry for it? Manny had psychological issues in which caused him to commit this crime. Manny was executed, and therefore he has responded to his wrongdoing. But was this necessary? Now not only do we have a woman who has lost her life, we now have a man who made a terrible mistake without his life as well. Nothing has been accomplished.

All in all, these scenarios of forgiveness do not always work the way that they are designed to work. When one grants forgiveness, that does not necessarily mean that they have forgotten or that the offender does not need to be punished for what they have done. The victim simply acknowledges the fact that the offender is sorry. If the offender does not show remorse, they are likely not to be forgiven. Essentially it is completely up to the victim(s) whether or not to forgive.

Egoism is defined as excessive concern with one’s self. Prometheus is an egoist. He does not sacrifice himself to others, nor does he sacrifice others to himself. The egoism he has is exactly what the leaders try to bring out. He begins wanting things for himself, wanting to learn, wanting a career that makes him happy, loving someone and thinking for himself. His fellow citizens are not free spirited and are dull. They are the living dead.

In this collective society, the people are given their profession by the Council of Vocations. After the civilians leave the Home of the Students, they receive which ever job they are prescribed. Prometheus does wish to be a Scholar. He knows that will make him content with life. He is given the role of street sweeper and is delighted with this. Collectivism has taken control of society. Prometheus later realizes the boredom of his job. He begins to choose his happiness in life by studying and thinking by himself. He is becoming unique.

Isolation from the group is forbidden. Having a street sweeper invent something of great value is prohibited. The leaders could not have taken the gift of light from Prometheus. The news of a street sweeper finding something precious would cause chaos. All the citizens would realize that they could do more than expected and not be limited to what was allowed by society. The World Council of Scholars has to hide the idea of individualism.

Having any feelings for individuals is disgraceful. Prometheus has a friend and a lover. He is a rebel in his own land. He breaks many laws, living the way he wants. He is an egoist, not letting others control his lifestyle. He journeys to the forest to live under his laws. Prometheus has become an egoist. He now thinks for himself and doesn’t let others rule him.

Custom Essays on Egoism

Prometheus now wants things to himself and has his own feelings. He is no longer a part of the group. He is an individual. He represents the unconquerable human spirit. Only few men live as egoist, Prometheus is one of them.

Cobweb model (know as Hog Cycle) is a dynamic analysis which provides an explanation for certain types of cyclical behaviours due to regular fluctuation in price and output.

This model, as most other economic models, is based on some assumptions. It assumes that prices are determined by current prices i.e. farmers expect that the future price will be the same as the present ones. This is known as the ‘Naïve Expectation’. This assumption is considered to be unrealistic since prices might fluctuate due to unplanned variations, which might effect output such as weather and disease. The model also assumes that there is a one period time lag in production response. In Cobweb model a cycle duration is assumed to be multiplied by a production lag. However, in reality this is too short, therefore we observe cycles, which are 4 multiplied by production lag.

There are three types of cobweb cyclical process continuous, converging and diverging cobwebs. Figure (1) shows a continuous cobweb, which is also, known as a stable cycle. In a continuous cobweb, supply (S) and demand (D) curves both have linear function i.e. straight lines and have the same slopes but they are in the opposite directions. This means that the elasticity of demand and supply are equal, but has different signs. This is also a very special case according to Cobweb Theorem.

Figure (1)

Pigs production can be described using this type of cycle. Looking at Figure (1)a, we can start from the equilibrium point (where supply and demand curves crosses). At this point the price of pigs is Pe and quantity (supplied = demanded) is Qe. Lets assume that there is a shortage in the supply of pigs due to some diseases i.e. quantity supplied will fall to Q1. At this point demand is higher than supply and this will push the price to P1. In the next period, this rise in price will attract producers to plan a larger production in pigs i.e. quantity supplied will increase to Q. However this high price P1 will decrease demand and therefore the price will fall down to P. In the following period, producers plan to reduce their pig production to Q1, which will rise prices to P1 and the cycle starts all over again. The relation between price and time (periods) is shown in Figure (1)b.

Figure () shows pigs inventory in the US in the period from 1 000. This illustrates Continuous Cobwebs.

(Source http//www.caf.wvu.edu/resm/courses/are1/1ch10.ppt)

Figure ()

As seen in Figure (), the S curve is steeper than the D curve i.e. elasticity of demand is less than the elasticity of supply. This creates a cycle described as the ‘Converging Cobweb’ were the cycles become smaller and smaller and they converge on the equilibrium point. Cereals usually have this type of cycles.

The third cobweb cyclical process is called ‘Diverging Cobweb’ which is the case of cattle, shown in Figure (4). In this type of cycle the slope of the demand curve is steeper than the supply curve. In this case the elasticity of demand is greater than the elasticity of supply and therefore the cycles become larger and larger.

Figure (5), which shows cattle figures in the US since 1867, support this since it shows that cattle has a Diverging Cobweb cycle.

(Source http//www.caf.wvu.edu/resm/courses/are1/1ch10.ppt)

Figure (5)

Although there are three types of Cobweb cycles, continuous cobwebs are more acceptable even though Cobweb Model assumes that this is a special case. We can give many reasons why continuous cobwebs are more realistic. One reason is that in reality, the supply curve is not linear but it is a non-linear curve, which is relatively flat around the equilibrium point as shown in Figure (6). This gives us a Diverging Cobweb around the equilibrium since elasticity of demand is less than the elasticity of supply and a Converging Cobweb at lower prices.

In conclusion, Cobweb Theorem gives a valuable explanation of how prices cycles can arise and persist over long periods of time. Farmers tend to react as if the prices they observe today are the best indicator of the prices they will experience next year, and often fail to consider the effect which their and their neighbour’s production changes will have on prices then.

Cobweb Theorem suggests that Continuos Cobwebs are special cases but in realtity this is not the case and we can drive both Diverging Cobwebs and Converging Cobwebs around it.

I took a walk through the park today like I did every afternoon since I was 0. Something unusual today that was different from every other walk that I’ve taking before. I fainted and the next thing I knew I was at the hospital. I seen my parents and they told me that they had some really bad news. I only had a few more weeks to live. After they told me this I thought about what I would do if I could live my life over again. If I had my life to live over, Id dare to make more mistakes next time. Id relax, Id limber up. I would be sillier than Ive been this trip. I would take fewer things seriously, take more chances, take more trips. Id climb more mountains, and swim more rivers. I would eat more ice cream and less beans. I would perhaps have more actual troubles, but Id have fewer imaginary ones. Im one of those people who lived seriously, sanely, hour after hour, day after day. Oh, Ive had my moments, and if I had it to do over again, Id have more of them. Ive been one of those persons who never goes anywhere without a thermometer, a hot-water bottle, a raincoat, and a parachute. If I had to do it again, I would travel lighter than this trip. If I had my life to live over, I would start going barefoot earlier in the spring, and stay that way later in the fall. I would go to more dances, I would ride more merry-go-rounds. I would pick more daisies.

I would tell him the truth because it would be better for everyone in the end. For example, in Night, Elie and his father left the hospital because they heard that if they stayed the soldiers were going to kill anybody that was there. Later after they left, they found out that the people that stayed back at the hospital were freed. Although I respect the decision that his parents made but I believe that it is better for people to know the truth instead of them being in the dark for the rest of their lives. He’s like a brother to me and I couldn’t just stand around and act like nothing is wrong. I believe that family and friends should stick together no matter what the problem is. It is just like in Night where Elie only had one thing on his mind and that was to never be separated from his father, to always stick together no matter what.

I believe that he should be able to spend his last couple of days knowing and to being able to do anything that he wants to do. Whether it be saying goodbye to his friends and family or do something that he has always wanted to do. For example, go skydiving or to see the Sears Tower. Maybe he wants to have a feeling as if a bird was flying through the sky. If anyone lies once, in reality they would have to lie so many more times just to try and cover the first lie that they said. If anyone tells the truth at the beginning it would be better for everybody. For example, in Jakob the Liar, Roger Ebert made a character that lied about having a radio and in doing this he had to keep making up lies so that the others wouldn’t find out that he wasn’t telling the truth.

A Midsummer Nights Dream is a famous comedy written by William Shakespeare in which the characters use classical mythological allusions to relate to the audience. In order for these allusions to have a great effect on the audience, the meaning of these allusions must be recognized. Spread throughout the play, Shakespeare employs many allusions used by several characters. Five of these allusions are apparent in the speeches of Titania and Helena. These characters use allusions as a reference in which the audiences of that time would understand and perhaps laugh at.

Titania uses two mythological allusions in her conversation with Oberon in Act , Scene 1. She makes mythical allusions to Phillida and Neptune. She uses these allusions as evidence to back up the points she is trying to get across to Oberon.

The first example of an allusion that Titania uses is that of Phillida. Tatania quotes, to amorous Phillida (Shakespeare ). Phillida is a reference to the traditional shepherdess of love poetry (Mowat 8). This allusion is used to support Titanias idea that Oberon is cheating on her with other women.

The second allusion used is a reference to Neptune. Titania uses this allusion when she says, And sat with me on Neptunes yellow sands (Shakespeare 4). Neptune is the god of the sea, but Titania uses Neptune to represent the sea (Mowat 4). Titania uses this allusion to Neptune to represent her location by the sea.

Helena is another character in A Midsummer Nights Dream that uses allusions to classical mythology. Three allusions that she uses are Apollo, Daphne, and a griffin. These allusions can be found in Act , Scene 1 in the conversation between Helena and Demetrius. Helena uses these allusions to explain why she is pursuing Demetrius.

The allusion of Apollo and Daphne are used when Helena says, Apollo flies and Daphne holds the chase (Shakespeare 4). Daphne is a nymph that chases the god Apollo (Mowat 48). Helena uses this allusion to demonstrate how stories can be changed when the weak pursue the strong. Helenas use of this allusion has a direct connection to her reasoning for pursuing Demetrius. Demetrius is the strong being pursued and Helena in the weak pursuing Demetrius.

The last allusion that Helena makes is when she talks about a griffin. The allusion to the griffin appears where Helena says, The dove pursues the griffin (Shakespeare 4). The griffin is a mythological beast with the head of an eagle on the body of a lion (Mowat 48). Helena uses this allusion of the dove and the griffin as an example of the weak pursuing the strong. In her words, the dove pursues the griffin. Her point is that the dove represents the weak and the griffin represents the strong.

The above 5 allusions are only a handful of the mythical allusions illustrated in this Shakespearean play. There are over 40 allusions to classical mythology used throughout the play which the audience needs to have an understanding of. Basic knowledge of mythology is needed to realize the meaning and significance of these allusions. To the audiences of Shakespeares time, this knowledge was quite commonplace. Today, however, few people would be able to understand the usage of these allusions by Shakespeare. After recognizing all of the allusions in this play, it is imperative that the reader be cognizant of allusions to classical mythology used by Shakespeare in many of his works.

What is Love?

The novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God” expresses many different viewpoints on love and life in general. Janie, a beautiful, caring, and intelligent, black woman is the main character. She is raised in West Florida alone by her strict grandmother, who encourages her to marry off right away, at the early age of 16. Without even knowing Logan, a wealthy farmer who owns 60 acres of land, she takes her grandmother’s advice and marries him immediately. She was tired of being alone, and she knew that husbands and wives always loved eachother, so she figured that getting married would make love, and she would grow to love Logan. At her young age, and with what she had been taught and exposed to, it was not expected of her to know any better. Janie learns shortly after that marriage does not make love, when she realizes she is not attracted to Logan, in any way, shape, or form. He does not treat her like a young woman should be treated, by making her work hard on the farm and constantly disrespecting her.

While Logan is away for a few days, Janie meets a sophisticated, richer-looking, older man named Joe Starks who is in the process of moving to the surrounding area, and aims to be leader among black people. Joe, who asks Janie to call him Jody comments on how young and beautiful she is, and how she should not be doing any kind of work on a farm and deserves better. He then proposes to her, making the promise that he will show her the kind way a lady should be treated. She is impressed at his words, and it wasn’t until Logan told her off and threatened to kill her with an ax later on that night, that she knew for sure she was ready to move on. Somehow, Janie felt inside of her that marrying Jody Starks was meant to be, and that she would live a happy, loving life with him.

So Janie marries him the very next morning, and they enter their new town, which does not seem like much of a town at first. As soon as he finds out there isn’t a Mayor, he is determined to become him, as well as to “fix up the place.” The townsfolks begin to act suspiciously when they mistake Janie for his daughter, thus implying he is much too old for her, and that to their conclusion, she has married him for the money. He instantly makes himself the new, famous, well-known Mayor, and does a great deal to fix up the town, like building a lightpost and putting up a store. His intentions are good, but he is very selfish and self-centered, and everything he had he received from the people in the town, because they let him step right up, do what he wanted, and no one ever did anything to stop him. Also, he seems to not have time for Janie, and after a while she realizes he was not everything he made himself out to be. He doesn’t exactly treat her “the way a lady should be treated”, either. Janie liked the so-called “authority”, but she didn’t exactly want to be known as Mrs. Mayor. She wanted a normal, happy life, not having to live under so much tension. Constantly, he orders her around the store and in the house, telling her what to do and what not to do, without giving her any options, treating her almost like a slave, and she did whatever he said, willingly. Something was off. She did not love him. That was not love. As the years passed, Jody became less and less attractive to Janie, as he got older, and he would always tell her things like, “You ain’t no young pullet no mo’”, and “You’se uh ole woman, nearly forty”, when really he was the one looking bad, and she remained beautiful. Janie never talked back until the day he completely humiliated her in the store, when she did not cut a piece of tabacco the right way. This was when she finally stood up for herself and spoke her mind, and Jody struck her as hard as he could. The married couple didn’t talk for a while after the fight; Jody moved into another room and could not bear to be around her. Janie feels guilty in a way and finally has the nerve to apologize to him when she hears he is to die soon, but he takes it the wrong way and rejects her. He dies a painful death right then and there.

Janie fears she will never know what love is, that it is too late. She was glad to have some piece and quiet to herself after Jody’s death. But when Tea Cake came along, everything changed, for the good. Tea Cake was an honest, caring, hard-working man, who didn’t have much as far as wealth was concerned, but he was everything she ever dreamed of. Someone who valued her, fulfilled his promises, listened to what she had to say, and allowed her to live for herself. He took her anywhere she wanted to go, and they went out for fun every night. Others tried to talk her out of it, but she knew in her heart that Tea Cake was the one for her. Honesty, trust, and respect. That was love. I long for the kind of relationship Janie and Tea Cake had.

The Longest Day

Fire Blazing, hearts racing, limbs missing, soldiers yelling out in agonizing pain, are some scenes than can be replicated by movies or books. But the reality of what happened on June 6, 144, known as D-Day, the longest day in history can never be and never will be portrayed accurately, especially what happened on Omaha Beach. There are countless details that happened on D-Day that few and far between have any clue of. The landing on Omaha Beach was different from any other day during WWII. It was the first major involvement from the U.S. and first real account at the reality of war.

It was on June 6, 144, that Operation Overlord, the long anticipated invasion of Nazi- held Europe went into action. General Dwight David Eisenhower was in command of the invasion, which was code-named Operation Overlord. The first of the beaches to be landed on was Omaha Beach, which was the most restricted and heavily defended of the beaches. The terrain was difficult backed by 10 feet high sea walls and overlooking cliffs which was immediately recognizable from the sea.( The Valour )

Before even setting foot on beach sands, rangers were already feeling the affects of war. The American forces in there LCVP landing crafts were fighting through rough seas, the cold air, and sporadic rain (Ambrose, 445).There were people chewing tobacco,

praying, thinking to themselves pensively, singing, anything to prepare themselves from

what was about to happen. When one person vomited from either sea sickness or apprehensiveness, it was followed by an uncontrollable chain reaction. As landing crafts came nearer and nearer to Omaha Beach, sounds of machine guns and explosions rang out in the minds of the rangers. They knew they were about to engage with the images they pensively had in mind (Saving Private).

As landing crafts came closer, a convoy guide yelled, “ we’re going to drop this ramp and as soon as we do, we’re going to back out, so you guys better be ready!” One private retold what happened. “When we hit the sand, the ramp went down and Lieutenant Anderson was the first off the boat with Private Dominguez. In the next few seconds, I went off, and I saw Dominguez had already been shot and was lying in the water and sand” (Meyer).

Colonel George A. Taylor, who lead his troops against a German machine gun emplacement, said, Two kinds of people are staying on this beach, the dead and those who are about to die (The Valour). As soon as the doors lifted from the landing crafts, Omaha Beach was a slaughter, It was a complete foul up. Some didn’t even have a chance. One private said, “the nearer I got to the beach line, the more certain I was that the landing was a disaster.” Opposition was unstoppable. Bullets were flying everywhere straight into the helmets of the rangers. Chaotically they jumped into the water hoping to dodge the bullets, their equipment so heavy that it weighed them down. Heavy seas added problems to the already difficult assault on the well defended territory. Many men, including most of the much needed demolition crews, drowned before reaching land.

Kim

Some didn’t die from combat, but from drowning because equipment was too heavy or

rope got caught around their necks under water. Bullets hit the water hissing through the flesh of the rangers killing them before even reaching the surface (Freeman).

Making it onto shore was the hardest part. The ones that actually made it to shore was out of luck. Every inch of the beach was pre-sited (Saving Private). There was little or no firing from the troops. On the other hand, German machine guns, mortars, and 88s were laying down some of the heaviest fire. Within ten minutes of landing every officer and sergeant of the 16th Regiment was dead or wounded (Ambrose, 440).

Rangers that made it to shore had obstacles ahead to over come. There were mines randomly set up everywhere. The battle of Omaha Beach was the first deadly enemy fire on an exposed beach where total fire control favored the defender. The whole beach was an obstacle course of 7 feet Belgium gates, log posts, log ramps, 5 feet hedgehogs made of crossed steel beams, and sea walls, some affixed with mines (Ambrose, 44).

Throughout the landing, German gunners poured deadly fire into the ranks of the invading Americans. Destroyed craft and vehicles littered the waters edge and beach.

Bodies lay on the beach or floated in the water (Meyer). People’s lives were taken brutally away from them. There were many close calls with sighs of relief. “Thank you Jesus!” And then a second later their life taken away from a single bullet. Chaos was everywhere and there were people just firing anywhere because they didn’t know where to fire at. Men sought refuge behind beach obstacles, pondering the deadly sprint across the beach to the seawall, which offered some safety at the base of the cliff (Saving Private). The sight was horrendous and brutal. Rangers were risking life and limb. Mines placed in random areas

Kim 4

blew off limbs making a sight for gruesomeness (Goldstein). They were disoriented by the chaos around them and the inaudible noises. All the images around them played in slow motion. A ranger with his arm blown off clumsily searched for his missing limb on the ground. The agonizing screams, “mama!” range out from rangers (Saving Private).

Medics stuck in the cross-fire did everything they could with what they had. There were men, wounded, living, dead huddled together as tightly as a box of cigars. Mortars were blowing around them, artillery pieces blowing beside them. Many were in need of rapid evacuation, but was not provided so many died. There was little that could be done for the wounded except bandaging, splinting, giving morphine, and plasma (Ambrose, 47). Patience ran dry when what they thought could be a saved case was interrupted by a bullet through the head. One was heard saying, “we stopped the bleeding! We stopped the bleeding!” A split second later, a bullet went through the head killing him instantly (Saving Private).

One of the biggest problems was not only the restricted terrain and the dug in pillboxes, but the fact that allied intelligence had overlooked the 5nd Infantry Division right behind the beaches. This unit, like others in Normandy, was spread out, but was an experienced unit that served in Russia. It more than doubled the effectiveness of the coastal defenses, thus resulting in excessive U.S. losses. The defending forces consisted of three battalions of the veteran 5nd Infantry Division. Their weapons were fixed to cover the beach with grazing enfilade fire as well as plunging fire from the cliffs. Omaha

was a killing zone (Keegan, 6).

The troops on the beach were left on their own and realized that the exits were not

Kim 5

the way off. Slowly, and in small groups, they scaled the cliffs. Rangers that managed to crawl through the German obstacles to the sea wall found themselves assaulting German casemates. They were the most massive defensive structures at the beaches. Their thick

concrete walls could withstand the heaviest bombardments (Meyer).

By early afternoon a majority of the German pillboxes on the beach and bluff had been put out of action by destroyers, tanks, and infantry, suppressing if not entirely eliminating machine-gun fire on the beach. Sniper fire, however, continued. The Germans made use of the maze of communication trenches and tunnels to reoccupy positions earlier abandoned and resumed firing. The Americans started coming in and taking down the Germans slowly but surely. They spotted a German machine gunner with a rifleman firing down on the beach from the dugout. The gunner was shot in the back; the rifleman surrendered (Ambrose, 44).

By the end of the day, when German fire basically died down, more Americans were coming in. Wreckage on the beach and in the water was greater than anything anyone could imagine. Tanks were strewn along the beach, some half submerged. Their minds had already been made up to the fact that a horrible sight would greet them, and it was a good thing that they prepared themselves because the number of casualties was appalling (The Valour).

By nightfall, German fire was noticeably decreased as the defensive positions were taken from the rear. Then one by one the exits were opened. The Americans

suffered ,400 casualties at Omaha on June 6, but by the end of the day they had landed

4,000 troops. The German 5nd Division lost 0 percent of its strength, with 1,00

Kim 6

casualties, but it had no reserves coming to continue the fight. From the sea wall, the whole beach with its destruction could be seen. It was simply stated when a ranger said, “that’s quite a view” (Saving Private).

The resistance expected by the allies was not great. 4 things gave allies the notion that they could succeed in this assault. First, allied intelligence thought that the position was covered by the German 716th Infantry Division, a low-quality unit. They thought there was probably only a battalion of about 800 men. nd, the B-17s assigned to bomb the area before the attack were believed to be able to knock out much of the fight from these men. And their bombs would create giant craters to gain better cover for the Americans as they moved over the beach. rd, the naval bombardment would surely finish off anything left alive after the B-17s attacked. The 4th reason for confidence was that over 40,000 men were standard to land on D-Day at this one beach. Quite a number of men against the suspected 800 defenders. Of course e everything went wrong. “Every man who set foot on Omaha Beach that day was a hero” (Ambrose, 46)
